After 14 years in opposition, the Labour Party now has the chance to put their policies into practice and change the country. So what changes has Starmer already made? And what does this tell us about how he will continue to govern as Prime Minister?

It’s obvious why Starmer chose Richard Hermer. He’s a leading barrister and so is up to date on current law, where as Emily Thornberry hasn’t practiced law for almost 20 years.
Because he's a far left human rights shill who will go about ferrying in illegals?
It’s also a statement that unlike the previous government which appointed someone extremely partisan, who effectively acted to justify the legality of party policy, the new appointee is effectively neutral and can be expected to provide impartial judgement on the legality of policies.

My major concern is that Labour have very much locked themselves into this course of action. They've consistently promised no tax rises and no spending cuts, and reaffirmed that promise after the election. So the only way for them to raise funding is to stimulate economic growth.
If they pull this off it'll go down as one of the biggest economic turnarounds in our country's history. But if they fail and need to raise taxes or introduce austerity measures, nobody will ever trust Starmer again. I suppose we'll wait and see.
Well he said he wasn’t going to raise taxes on working people. Most interpret this as taxes won’t go up for lower and middle class people but will likely do so for the wealthiest.
Great point. In hindsight, it may have been better to promise less because they would still likely have gotten a big majority.
But then again, the vote share was so close that these promises may have been necessary to win (given the voting system relying heavily on centrist swing voters).
I’d be happy if they raised taxes on the owner class (people who own vast swathes of real estate for instance).
@@pepela8214 Yep - 'underpromise and overdeliver' can be a good strategy

having someone who runs a business that cuts keys, in charge of prisons. Is kind of funny
I was about to say something snarky, but then realised, yes, it is strangely appropriate 😆
Timpson (the key-cutting business) has been vastly run by ex-offenders who have proven to be the most hard-working employees. The CEO of Timpson, James Timpson, has been appointed as Minister for Prisons, Parole and Probation. His ideology is not giving custodial sentences for petty offences to parents who shoplift to feed their children, but rather, to offer them a job at Timpson, where thy can earn a salary, and therefore, have no need in committing such crimes - elevating the issue of prisons being overcapacity. This model is also used in The Netherlands, it is called "Community Sentencing"
Community Sentence Explained:
A community sentence combines some form of punishment with activities carried out in the community. It could mean, for example, that an offender must:
- Carry out up to 300 hours of unpaid work, for example removing graffiti
- Have alcohol or drug treatment to help tackle the reasons why they have committed crimes in the first place
- Keep to a curfew to be in a particular place at certain times - keeps them out of trouble
- Being obliged to live at a particular address
- Being prohibited from travelling overseas
- Undertaking a rehabilitation activity requirement
- Taking part in a programme to help change offending behaviour
- Being forbidden to take part in particular activities
- Meeting an exclusion requirement, which means not being allowed to go to particular places
- Undergoing:
- Mental health treatment
- Drug rehabilitation
- Alcohol treatment
- Alcohol abstinence and monitoring requirement
This punishes offenders, and changes offenders’ behaviour so they don’t commit crime in the future. It also gives back to the community.

The idea of putting experts into junior government roles is interesting. I hope it works and it simply becomes convention.
Hopefully long term they can just do this without having to put people in the lords, would decrease the cronyism
it shouldnt be an exceptional thing if your aim is to improve the country
Many governments have shied away from that, because those top-level roles in the departments and ministries are basically "lobbyists" and "administrators" for those departments and ministries. They obviously have some responsibilities on the subject matter, but their main role is getting things done within their department - and that is a skill politicians usually have, as they know how to, you know, do politics.
So we have to see how this goes - I hope they can have more of an impact and don't drown in the administrative graveyard that you can find in the minefields of whitehall.
Agree! I was thrilled to see Timpson named and I hope this action sets a precedent for future governments.

Let criminals leave prison earlier...
I welcome the puddle, and suggest we go further.
I think Starmer is essentially a technocrat and that´s fine, as long as you have some balance in the cabinet. The problem is his cabinet is largely full of Keir Starmer clones, the only ones that are interesting are the prisons minister and the science minister. I think it´s dangerous to fill a cabinet full of people who 100% agree with you.
I think this government will be more competent at running departments etc than the Tories (not hard to achieve), but Starmer doesn´t get that you can´t solve all problems just by running departments more efficiently. Like other Liberal democracies, the UK has a number of huge crises, the first and foremost being wealth inequality and it´s contributing greatly to political instability.
The other one is whether or not we want to have a pause on muliticulturalism or whether we want it to continue. The UK won´t cease to be multicultural and I think most people don´t want a total cease in all honesty, but there is definitely a debate as to if we´re becoming too diverse and having some fragmentation. I tend to be on the more liberal side of that debate myself, but we can´t just wish the issue away, like Starmer wants to, it has to be tackled.
I don´t think Starmer really understands or cares about these problems and it could be his undoing. He doesn´t deal with opposition well either, he just tends to shut people down or kick them out of the party if they disagree with him.
I suppose you could say that Kier is a product of the situation the Labour party has found themselves in.
They want someone who runs a tight ship by not allowing dissent within the party and someone so utterly boring that they will likely not get involved in scandals.
I actually think it's a pretty good strategy for getting into and staying in government.
@@pepela8214 well, they kind of won 2024 by default, the Tories had screwed up so badly that no opposition party could fail to lose that election.
The thing is if Reform hadn´t have run, Starmer wouldn´t have won a landslide, he may have even had to do a coalition with the Libdems.
Likewise, structural stupidity is a real thing and it´s what happens when you have no ideological diversity.
I.e the Tory party went crazy, largely because Johnson kicked out all the Remainers and all the liberal Tories.
I have a feeling the same thing will happen to Starmer´s Labour if he just has a cabinet of fairly hard Blairites and doesn´t consider any ideas from further left.
Might it not be a good idea not to make assumptions about what he does and doesn't know and care about until he's been in office for more than a few days? That's an awful lot of baseless assumptions you're making.
In your last paragraph you wrote "Starmer" but meant Johnson.
@@talideon The assumptions are not baseless.
1)My first paragraph is true, essentially there´s nobody in his shadow cabinet who isn´t from his faction of the party. I suspect he thought even Thornberry might give him some opposition.
Even Blair had people like Clare Short and Frank Dobson in his cabinet. There is no ideological diversity at all. That´s not "an assumption", that´s a fact. All these people have histories you can easily look up.
2) That´s how Starmer has operated during his election campaign, he´s very reluctant to deal with fundamental questions about how the country should actually look.
It´s not part of how his mind works. That´s not a problem if he has people in the cabinet who gets that, but so far he´s filled the cabinet with people who think like him.
3)He doesn´t deal with opposition well. Blair and Brown, whatever their faults, didn´t just shut people down who disagreed with them. They knew how to make their case. Starmer very much does. Plenty of party activists have challenged him publically and he just stared at them blankly and then had them expelled.
4) He may well get re-elected and I suspect he will be better than the Tories, but that might not be good enough in 2029 and the election results show he has a big potential challenge to his left as well as his right. That´s not "baseless", that´s based on information from last election results.
This is really great coverage. Can you do something like this so often just summarising everything the government is doing. Could even be "this month in the government"

Yes, it's weird the government went for new backgrounds like 'scientist', 'lawyer' and 'successful CEO' when there are so many people with tried and tested qualifications like 'went to school with the PM', 'donated large amounts to the party' and 'agrees with everything I say'.
And don't get me started on the new backgrounds in D&D 2024...
@5:25 on your slides I believe you meant to type clean “steel” rather than steal. Thanks as always for the TDLR 🤓
NIMBY planning laws might be important but so are environmental considerations especially areas like migration bird landings, and rare flowers; and also food security. These should be done where possible in brown and grey belt land, and areas where there is neither SSSI's or food growth.
Finally a news video that actually tells us what the government is doing
Appointing people I roles that they know what they are doing is a no brainier
Starmer is a Torrie in sheep clothing
But will they actually do what they are supposed to or just procrastinate? That is the question.
That background scares me. Maybe it’s 4 AM where I’m at
After 4 weeks he's totally insulted the entire British working class and has divided the population. Well done Sir Kier, that's got to be some kind of recorx
All I can say is the UK will be more closer with the EU as well as changing the Brexit deal, so hopefully restoring the Freedom of Movement
Very unlikely. The EU won't soften, not even with the change of Government. Sends the wrong message to the rest of the member states.
Probably not, but we can hope.
Getting back freedom of movement would be amazing.
Ahhh crap. Not good!
@@pepela8214how so? More burdens on the state?
EU will do nothing for us until we do what we signed up to do, the tories have been deferring
Appointing people who have experience in the job instead of just fellow toffs from Oxbridge who fancy the extra prestige and power!? Well it’s radical, but it might just work…
Starmer is a Torrie in sheep clothing
"clean steal" cracked me up
Any news on what theirs plans are with the nhs? I haven’t kept up to date 😅
Are you guys renovating?
Moving studios
Finally, someone who knows what they're doing
Starmer is a Torrie in sheep clothing
@@MrIlleism No, Tories don't know how to run a piss up in a brewery, Stramer at least seems somewhat compitent. Time will tell I guess.
@@strikeforcealpha9343 It's only been a week and the Tories are still fresh in the memory.
As you quite rightly pointed out, time will tell, so lets see where we are, 3, 4 and 5 years from now.
Good video idea, hope you keep it up 👍
As an American “what has the government done this week” has a totally different tone.
This sounds amazing? damn
What are his plans to eliminate islamic extremism which has risen from practically zero 50 years ago to the massive problem that it is today?
It's not a massive problem. If anything islamophodia is the issue. And if the people of Islam are upset It's probably because we invaded their country.
More weekly updates on this topic please!
More importantly though, the TLDR team finally have their desk back
