Yup, after looking at your video, yes the unit sounds really cool ! Really liked the song you are playing here .. I still have an old Gt-5 ... I think I use a different setup, but really like the sounds you are getting out the unit here, great work !
Thanks Gino! Just slapping a two notes cab m on these brings em right into the 21st century in my opinion. People tend to use them just as pedal boards now though, which is understandable.

Thanks man! Yeah, I wasn’t able to get this one to work as a pedal board into an amp but I got a couple workable sounds using the internal preamp and a two notes IR device
@@cliftonwright7081 Great job, great video, great playing man. I'm curious what setting you had on the GT5 (Gtr Amp combo/stack, Power Amp combo/stack, Line). I'm assuming it wasn't the Line setting so that you could bypass the GT cab emulation and use the Two Notes. Man, these old GT units are work horses. I've had a GT3 for probably 25 years. I've used in in almost every configuration you can imagine (preamp into power amp, pedal board, midi switcher for other pre amps, etc). I think the real key to using the preamps is not to get hung up on if it sounds like a Plexi, Twin, 5150, etc. There's a plethora of options with eq etc. Use your ears, dial in a tone and have fun. Thanks for sharing!
@@jamessmith9278 thanks for the kind words, those are great insights and a good philosophy for approaching any modeling/more complex gear. Even guys that played the same model Marshalls back in the day dialed in their own unique sounds.
Great demo!! I had a GT3 and loved it sadly had to sell it last to pay some bills!!! Big mistake!!! Fuck it! I’m pressing BUY on a GT5 now! The latest bills can wait.
When I use this through headphones none better buy any amp I’ve used fenders sounds unusable. Any suggestions on what to use this with other than a PA system!
I had a hard time getting it to sound the way I wanted plugged into a clean amp in “pedalboard” mode. I think your best bet is to use the preamps in the GT5 and go into the effects return or poweramp input (like on a Fender Hotrod)
Help please, how do i set it up for direct recording? I changes the global setting to headphones but it sounds so shitty and fuzzy and oversaturated. How do i adjust the right levels? Volume button on the back? I need a tutorial on it❤
Haha yeah those are the key words! I was trying to make it work as a pedalboard in front of a Fender Blues Junior last night and it wasn’t really happening. Works better into the power amp input of an amp using its onboard preamps.
Cool that you tried this out. Since the architecture is nearly the same as the ME-8 and SE-50/70, with analog OD/DS - how does it compare with those other units? I think the weakest link are the speaker sims, which could be overcome with an IR unit in the FX loop.
AWESOME. Underrated Processor. There is a preset "Big Bulge" on the GT-5.... I think going for a Michael Landau thing judging by name.... try it out. I didn't see it come up in your list, but may have missed it haha.
I use the gt-5 since a few years. I use the Manual mode for some effects... a big reverb, pitch shifter, pan/tremolo, chorus, multitap delay with tap tempo, and the Bypass to mute or stutter. Is somewhat flexible for glitch effects with the amount of parameters that can be tweaked with the CTL and expression at the same time.
@@shoseinen that’s awesome to hear, I was thinking about trying it out live for a while. For this video I used its onboard preamps into my Two Notes CAB M with the 6L6 power amp sim and a 4x12 green back loaded cab ir with the SM57 and R121 ribbon mics and it really felt great under the fingers.
@@cliftonwright7081 Yeaah! Sounds awesome in your case, i'm using the preamps and cab sims from the Line6 POD X3 (i consider the POD 2.0 better for cabs), but i want to avoid that cab sims later. May be the only problem with the modulations, are for example the phaser has a boost volume? And no wet/dry control. Don't remember exactly. But the chorus and tremolo has individual blocks and has more control on essencial things. The Harmonist effect can do a shimmer like the Boss PS-3, it has feedback and delay parameters, i use it sometimes.

Hello Clifton The Boss GT-5 is a floor version of the GX-700 but you loose the choice to play with a pitch detune plus a chorus (at the same time) which is a must for a 80's clean sound. Only few units can do this, the TC Electronic Nova System and the G can do this too. Regards from France. Nicolas

I missed GT-5, the 6 was the first one that caught my attention. I know that at some point Opeth switched to using GT-6 as preamps/effects for their tube heads on the road. Now they use Synergy. I wonder if they changed a lot over the versions. Also no idea what that intro theme was :D Really cool demo song though, in my opinion the composition and mix carries this unit further than its initial sounds.
I’d venture to say the main issues manifest with choices occurring after the pedals/preamp stuff. In my case I used a Two Notes CAB M which went a pretty long way for improving the direct recording performance of the unit. The pedals and effects sounds are all pretty good and actually pretty badass in how you can control them (blending from one wild effect to another with the foot controller). That being said, preamp modeling has come a long way.
