- Riu, Riu, Chiu is a Spanish "villancico" published in 1556 that has attained some contemporary fame as a Christmas carol. A villancico was a popular form for song in post-Renaissance Spain. This carol became one of the more widely known such works in its time; versions of it today often contain updated translations to filter out its archaic words and meanings. The author of this carol is generally thought to be anonymous, but its text, possibly originally written in Portuguese, has been attributed by some to Mateo Flecha (1481-1553). The melody to Riu, riu, chiu probably dates to the fifteenth century or earlier.
The song has crossed over to popular performance, and appears on Christmas themed collections, including David Archuleta's Christmas from the Heart, Sixpence None the Richer's The Dawn of Grace, Bruce Cockburn's Christmas, and an instrumental version on Bradley Joseph's Christmas Around the World album. The song appears on The Kingston Trio's 1961 album Goin' Places, listed as "Guardo el Lobo," and credited to musicologist Dr. Erich Schwandt.
In 1967 The Monkees performed the song live on a Christmas episode of their TV series, "The Monkees' Christmas Show". A studio version was released on subsequent compilation albums. It is believed they learned the song from their producer, Chip Douglas who himself performed it with his former band The Modern Folk Quartet on their 1964 album.
Davy's concentration, interactions and his voice on this; Peter's voice and pure and complete pleasure in this; Mike singing a song like this so well and Micky, somehow outdoing himself. This is why my heart is utterly lost.
Mickey's voice on this is amazing! Just fantastic.
I love this so much. I watch it a lot. No auto tune, no dubbing. The Monkees were and still are a “real” band.
Amen!
This is one they talked about doing on tour when Mike finally decided to join them. I read about it. I was so excited. Would've been so great. Then Davy died suddenly.
Fast forward the next year when Mike, Micky and Peter were finally on tour. I may be projecting, but I really thought I sensed them all on stage thinking "Man, we messed around (Mike) we should've done this when Davy was alive." I at least thought that as I watched. Those shows were bitter sweet for me.
This alone should and does prove without any doubt that The Monkees had an abundance of talent and were not fake or fabricated...singing this live, in the moment and on the spot with contrasting vocal parts is simply amazing!
Listening to this today in memory of Michael Nesmith. Loved all these guys ever since I was in grade school.
Mickey is the only one alive now
Never saw this when I was younger. I'm glad you posted it and I caught it! I've listened to it at least a dozen times. They have always had my heart and I mourn the loss, and always will, every time we lose one. 😇😇😇
16th Century spanish carol. Greetings from Madrid. 🇪🇸
The most underrated group in history! All brilliant musicians!
So underrated! How many groups can sing acappella and in Spanish no less? Do you know how hard it is to sing those words so beautifully? That's talent son!
Riu Riu Chiu is phrased in Catalan language I believe. But no matter, the boys certainly did nail it !
@@markpowers5907 In fact,it is old spanish.
@@antonioluisberrios6901
Thanks !
@@markpowers5907 Its XVI century Castilian Spanish
And in a meter that's not straight 4/4!
Arranged and sung perfectly. ❤
By far my favorite performance of a beautiful song. I remember watching them sing this when I was a little girl but it wasn't until MTV brought the Monkees back in reruns in the 80s that the power of it really resonated with me. I watch it over and over and it never gets old.
Rest in peace, Davy, Peter and Mike. You are missed.
To those who said the Monkees can't sing... oh yes they can! Beautiful.
Beautiful!
It’s Christmas time… 64 years old… my kids and grandkids know this song.. Merry Christmas everyone ❤️
Pure harmonies, no autotune. What a joy, there's only remaining Monkee. This was very special to experience this in the morning.
Thank you for posting 🙏🌻
I saw this on the original show the first time around and it always stuck in my mind. I loved it from the time I first heard the Monkees do it.
I remember a little introduction on that original show that has since been edited out. Micky took the guys back stage, real fourth wall stuff like they did. He explained the origin of the song...lit the candle and they sang. They never show that anymore. I know I saw it. Anybody else?
They need to go into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is so beautiful. I wish it was a little longer though.
You are correct!! They do belong there but that Jann Werner has some personal thing against the Monkees.
Absolutely Adrianna! They are judged so unfairly (also considering who IS in there...) but I have championed them for more than 20 years ...
Adrianna B - R & R Hall of fame - yes. Agreed.
Any organization that by now hasn't put the Monkees in the Hall of Fame it's just a board of morons. It makes me question the legitimacy and value of the entire organization.
Agreed! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🎵❤
These boys complemented each other to the max
The BEST rendition of RIU-RIU-CHIU I have ever heard-and I have sung and listened to a number of others!
Love this song! Their talent brought, and still brings so much joy to so many people. I love how impressed Davy looked as Micky did his thing in Spanish! Or as the kids say now how he "ate" those verses lol! I always enjoyed how their voices complimented each others, no matter the combination! This is special and they more than deserve to be in the Rock n Roll hall of fame...period!!!!
I watched The Monkees as a kid, but somehow I had missed this and only became aware of it about a week ago. I've listened to it over and over again now. It's just so good!
THE MONKEES WONDERFUL ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My first favourite band, Davy was my very first crush. I loved this show. I was born in '67 so it was when I was 3 that I "fell in love" with Davy! I met him when I was 20 and he was the most amazing, gracious, wonderful man! It was such an honour and pleasure to meet my very first crush!
Had no idea Mickey's voice was that sweet. RIP Davey and Peter. This was just beautiful!
Do you like "As we go along" on the Head soundtrack? In my opinion, that is Micky's sweetest vocal performance. Brought a tear to my eye when I first heard it. He's a great singer
And now RIP Michael. :(
@@jdw5678 Yes. Sadly.
RIP, Mike Nesmith. Your wide variety of talents will be missed. :-(
Still stunningly beautiful so many years later!
Well done, guys.
Nasayers now tell me the monkees dont sing their own songs. That was excellent!
That belief is based on the obvious lip sync during the TV show music montages. But, yes! this is wonderful.
Quasidiem99, anyone without a tin ear can tell it's them singing, lip sync or not.
RIP, Peter Tork; say hi to our dear Davy. Love and peace to both of your souls, and our deepest sympathies to your families, friends, colleagues... and especially to Micky and Mike. Thanks for all the music and fun. Much love to you on the other side.
To quote Patrick Swayze, "Ditto". I never get tired of watching this video. That harmonizing is beautiful.
@@happywanderer6307 absolutely. And anyone who has ever claimed they had no real talent 1. never watched this video, 2. never knew anything about them to begin with, 3. were musical/entertainment elitists of the worst kind, or 4. were all of the above.
and now RIP to Mike as well. 😔
Mickey is the sole survivor of the bunch
Still not in the hall of fame these boys are.
They very much deserve to be, so talented
It's beautiful to see how great there voices harmonize together
I just want everyone to watch this only looking at Peter :) He'll make you smile as always :)
Peter was always my favorite
I'm a fifty one year old female and have watched this show all of my life in one way or another and have just come to really appreciate Peter Tork in the last 5 years or so. I don't know why. But, damn, his face IS lovely in this song especially.
He also had just the best hair ever :)
Rest in peace to Peter....
Always does, he's just got that kind and gentle demeanor.
I always loved his smile
They sang this live on a soundstage--much more expensive than in a recording studio. They did it in TWO (!) takes according to Peter interview on WNPR Hartford. I asked Mickey (my only question, in 2006) how he did it. "Practice". They learned it from the MFQ (HD, CF, JY, CD), as per the end-of-show credits.
So beautiful. Despite what some people say, the Monkees have real talent. Sad that only two of them are left.
One now. T_T
And now down to one. :(
Forget about the RRHOF. Jann Wenner keeps out the people/groups he wants to screw over... that's why most people know it's a bullsh*t honor.
The Monkees have something that a-hole can't take away, though... a following who've loved these guys for 55 years.
Rest in peace Mike, Peter, and Davy.
I fully agree. Chubby Checker, an obvious founding father of RR is not in the rr hall of fame says it all.
Es encantador oírles interpretar un villancico español del siglo XVI que está recogido en el cancionero de Upsala y que por cierto es uno de mis favoritos. Muchas gracias.
Harmony! Pure Harmony!
Along the years I've been listening The Monkees; but when they were achieving and developing their own style, unexpectedly, they stopped.
I've only heard such harmony again with The Housemartins.
I always wanted for their return;
Sadly, after it happened, Davy went upstairs to sing with them angels.
But I am happy to see they singing Christmas songs; God bless them!
Another thing we do not see in singers and bands of today.
Excellent harmony! Very beautiful!
Their harmony was incredible. Far more talented than they were given credit for.
The harmonies are epic! RIP Davy and Peter!
Add Mike
Agradezco a Horacio Franco la recomendación de este video. Siempre tan oportuno Horacio y qué versátiles The Monkees.
Wow!! First time hearing this one. I love their harmony.
Exquisite harmony.
Davy 's smile says it all
My all time favorite band! Now Mike joined Davy and Peter in the celestial band!
"Ríu, ríu, chíu, the river guards her (referring to the "Lamb"); God kept the wolf away from Our Lamb.
"The raging wolf sought to bite her, but God Almighty knew to defend her; He chose to make her so that she could not sin; no original sin was found in that virgin."
"This one that is born is the Great King, Christ the Patriarch clothed in flesh. He redeemed us when He made himself small, though He was Infinite He would make himself finite."
+Enrique Vargas thank you for the translation, is that a complete translation of the chorus and the two verses?
you are welcome
Thank you so much! I appreciate your sharing.
How do you know
Thank you, Enrique. Is this in Portuguese or Spanish?
I remember me and my grandmother were trying to learn this in 2004 omg I miss her and Davy so much I had no idea they both would depart in the same decade six years apart 😭💔😭💔
So glad this is getting some of the attention it deserves
School holidays in the 70s watching the lads class can not be beating.
For those who are wondering, here's the entire translation:
Ríu, ríu, chíu, la guarda ribera,
Dios guardó el lobo de nuestra cordera.
("River, flowing river, the kingfisher;
God kept the wolf from our Lamb, our Lady.")
El lobo rabioso la quiso morder
Mas Dios Poderoso la supo defender
Quísola hacer que no pudiese pecar
Ni aun original esta virgen no tuviera.
("The raging wolf sought to bite her;
But God Almighty knew (how) to defend her;
He chose to make her so that she couldn't sin;
No original sin was discovered in that virgin.")
Éste que es nacido es el Gran Monarca
Cristo Patriarca de carne vestido
Hamos redimido con se hacer chiquito
Aunque era infinito finito se hiciera.
("This one that's born is the Great King;
Christ the Patriarch clothed in flesh.
He redeemed us when He made himself small;
Though He was Infinite, He'd make himself finite.")
Muchas profecías lo han profetizado
Y aún en nuestros días lo hemos alcanzado
A Dios humanado vemos en el suelo
Y al hombre en el cielo porque Él le quisiera
("Many prophecies have prophesied it;
And even in our days, we have reached it;
God in flesh we see on the ground;
And men in Heaven b/c He'd wanted")
Yo vi mil Garzones que andavan cantando
Por aqui volando haciendo mil sones
Diciendo a gascones Gloria sea en el Cielo
Y paz en el suelo pues Jesús nasciera.
("I saw 1,000 boys (angels) go singing;
Here making 1,000 voices while flying;
Telling the shepherds of glory in the heavens;
And peace to the world since Jesus has been born.)
Thanks so much for posting this! 💖
every christmas i put this song riu riu chiu me and my boyfriend love listening to the song
My brother clued me on to this. I thought I had every Monkees album (even the latest, which is actually pretty good) This is freaking AMAZEBALLS!
R.I.P. Mike, Peter and Davy.... singing as a trio from above as Mickey singing with us.
I had the tv on just for background noise when this song totally stopped me in my tracks.
My favorite Monkees recording. Beautiful!
My respect for the Monkeys just rose about 10 miles! Wow - I had no idea!!
Wow. Grew up watching the Monkees and don't think I ever saw this before.
Absolutely stunning!!
I am an Orthodox Christian, but I love this song, it's beautiful
My favorite! Love the harmonies ❤
Peter just LOVES it! You can tell
Pete looks like he's huffing the incense and really liking it.
lol
Really? He's just holding it.
Nesmith sings the first verse, the boys sing chorus.. But the body of the song is sung by Mickey Dolenz.
This is gorgeous!
Never hear this on the radio at Christmas, it's and endless Grandma got run over or Dominic the Donkey.
i was watching this the other day and i was thinking if Micky performs this now, i would love to hear Crosby, Stills & Nash sing back up.
I saw the Monkeys at Colorado’s Red Rocks. Fantastic performance…talented group
Merry Christmas 🎄⛄ to Monkees fans all over the world!
Beautifully sung, excellent harmonies and in a perfect understandable Spanish.
That was one powerful candle he blew out.
I'd forgotten about this song; the fact that they weren't allowed to play their own instruments at first hurt their image, but no one can deny they could definitely sing.
This is LITERALLY SO BEAUTIFUL 😍
I had no idea this existed. It was such a treat
thanks for having this here...I leave a link to this in my toolbar and come back to it every month or so
Micky's perfect pronunciation. Like he's a native.
The only Christmas song I truly love
RIP Michael Nesmith.
Beautiful.
Very Beautiful! This is one of my favorite Monkees songs. ❤️
We used to sing this in chorus!! Of course, we sounded nothing like this haha... Great job!
Such AMAZING voices! So very talented! UNDERRATED!!
Love 💘 this song and the Monkees!
Fabulous!
So lovely
Always wonderful to hear.
Watching The Monkees always make me feel better 🎉
Oh, Man!!
Is it really the one year anniversary of Mike Nesmth's death ?
Arrgh!!
loved the Monkees since I was a kid when I used to watch reruns of their tv show.
Hope wherever Mike, Peter And Davey are, it's Chrismas all the time(at least spiritually)
Love and positve thoughts to Mickey, and the rest of the guy's remainig family and Monkee fans of all ages!!

This was posted on Facebook today, by Micky Dolenz. Expect the view count to climb!
(count is 26,533 10 hours after he posted.)
This is amazing
Beautifly done by The MOnkees ! Love The Monkees !
Davy was always supposed to be the vocalist front man, and Micky Dolenz in the back on the drums.
But both Peter Tork and Micheal Nesmith heard Micky Dolenz voice and said "forget that sh*T" and made him the vocalist...and he ended up doing most of the vocals. He has an amazing voice.
Glorious!
Jamas había visto este documento. buena captura.
Just beautiful 😅❤️
just beautifull
Wow. Unexpected. Now I wonder what else they could have done... !
Just say the episode on t.v.. I don't recall seeing the episode. Song is new to me - beautiful! Great performance!
I am 51 and haved loved this song for virtually all of my life. I wish I knew Spanish every time I listen to it. I have never found this on an album, even a compilation album. Don't know why. As you pointed out, it is just beautiful.
supergailey1 I'm 60 and I discovered this rendition last year. Guess I missed the episode; I sure as heck would have remembered this.
Don't know where to find it, outside of UA-cam. Also it is in the Catalan dialect, but the differences with Spanish is minor.
Wonderful
Beautiful
Love the instance.
I saw their Christmas show way back then; the Monkeys were pretty good....
