"I love these two carols (Carol of the Bells/God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen) - they were made for each other -- they both capture the excitement of the Christmas Season. I have three children that just get giddy during December -- excited each morning as they get closer and closer to Christmas Day. That excitement is so contagious. I love it. It's the kind of energy and eagerness that keeps you up at night. I wanted to capture that joy and anticipation in this arrangement.
People have told me that this reminds them of the Pirates of the Caribbean. Maybe one year the Pirates franchise will make a Christmas special and THIS could be the theme song! Instead of Carol of the Bells it could be titled 'Jack Sparrow of the Bells.' =)"
-Steven Sharp Nelson
Carol of the Bells attributed to Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen: Traditional English Carol
Arrangement written and produced by Steven Sharp Nelson & Al van der Beek
Recorded, mixed & mastered by Al van der Beek at TPG Studios
Featured on the album "Christmas Cello"
Video Producer Paul Anderson
Cinematographer/Editor Tel Stewart
For my fellow music geeks =) my favorite part of writing this arrangement is the obligatory hemiola due to the meter difference between the two songs -- one is 3/4 and the other 4/4. I hope you like the way they collide. My second favorite part is the intense canon at the end that creates a cluster-chord feel and dissonant coda finally resolving with the main theme of BOTH tunes.
Shooting locations:
Downtown Salt Lake City, Utah
Little Cottonwood Canyon (Utah)
Big Cottonwood Canyon (Utah)
Ice Rink at the Gallivan Center (Salt Lake City, Utah)
Special thanks to the Security guard at the Gallivan Center for not kicking us off location. And to the random guy(W.D. Johnson), who came along and offered his snow shoe so the cello wouldn't sink into the snow.

I love cellos, something magical about this instrument, especially when one can play it like this. An instrument of the soul. No better way to express the meaning of Christmas. I wish the world would settle down and stop hating and killing and realize that we are all one in this vast universe. We are spinning out of control, it is like a tornado, the only way out is exploding. It is so much easier to love one another and get along, it takes so little effort. We are our own demise. If everyone would put positive thoughts out in the universe, we could turn this world around. Peace.
Preach
Yes. like. :)
If only it were so easy, whenever there's peace a storm will come and destroy it all.
+Peggy Sinclair I find this a bit humorous as I just got home from a Judo session and we just had the lesson demonstrating how it's much more productive to go with the flow of momentum, rather than fight it.
Also, regarding your statement about cellos, I was brought here by "O Come O Come Emmanuel - Cello and Piano Duet" which is really amazing.
I have the same feeling about cellos. Sweet, beautiful music! Ah it is my favorite instrument!
The fact they're smiling through the whole thing is the best part. You can see how passionate they are for music :)
YES!

Only musicians really passionate of their art and raw talent can appreciate music the way he does. The facial expressions, the smiles, the movement of the entire body with each stroke of the bow, that’s something you can’t fake. Okay brb gonna go tune my violin now.

The bow can't handle how good this is
I love how much joy he's finding in playing this. Rockin' out like a boss!
I have listened to this song every year since it came out to kick off the holiday season. Thank you for 10 years of awesome music. Here's to many more. Cheers!

@@VolodSem ??? If you posted a link to the song because you think I don't know the history of Carol of the Bells, thanks for the troll because I'm not going to click on a link in a UA-cam video lol. I just like the rendition the Piano Guys made... 10 years ago. Hence my comment. I realize Carol of the Bells is not 10 years old ROFL. I have a background in music. But again, thanks for the troll. You made me laugh. xD Or if you're not a troll, take time to read comments in different tones with different pauses. Trying to interpret the rhythm of a sentence - syncopation if you will - and its exact meaning over the internet can be hard. I've definitely misinterpreted sentences before! It happens. So I try not to comment if I don't know what someone is trying to say exactly.

Uses piano guys as background music while studying, has to keep telling myself not to watch Steve play the cello. He just look so happy...
thats one of the things that make these guys so great, they enjoyband have fun with what they do...and damn they do it well

Classical music helps the mind and also helps you focus more because there are no words to it.
Caitlynn Collise There's actually a lot more going on in the brain when listening to classical music as well. its really giving your brain quite the workout.
Same tho...😂
I love that he is so happy while playing, makes me smile too!
Thanks very much for your lovely comment over my page God bless you, sincerely you're so amazing when I saw your comment here on my page ❤️ where're you chatting from?

This is perfection!! My goal in 2021 is to learn the cello; I play the flute, the tenor sax, and various percussion but I have never tried a string of any kind! I am in love with the cello and listening to/watching this just gets me more motivated!! Merry Christmas to you all!! xxoo
Strings are very challenging, but you got this! :)
how did it go??
Why don't you study piano, too? It's the most complete instruments.
I wish you good luck. I briefly picked up the cello while in nursing school. 46 years later still regretting the nursing route. I'm much happier in the music realm. I played the clarinet family until Mt St Helens gave me a large dose of COPD. My arthritic hands still play the piano but not as well. I briefly took bagpipe lessons but COPD was also an issue. For some strange reason I can't grasp the string instrument family.
its almost halloween but im listning to christmas music. not because i dont like halloween, just because the pianoguys havent made a this is halloween cover yet

Its a great piece!!
Its a great piece!!
It's my favorite. :)
What its name in English?
Gabriela Mei Carol of the bells! Or Shedryk
I love the insert of _God rest ye merry gentleman_ in the middle. Fits perfectly.
I really does! Gives its more depth
those 5.4 dislikes were just crazy people who hate Christmas.
I love how this starts off sounding like it could be a theme song for Mission Impossible.
Andrew Curley Same. I actually thought I clicked the wrong video at first.
+Andrew Curley
This Ukrainian folk song
Рома Алєксєєв
That's correct. The chant that the song was based on was also originally used in pagan celebrations to ring in the beginning of spring, before Christianity claimed it as their own.
Exactly!!
its no wonder I land on these guys every time I want to hear good, quality soul-stirring music. They've got it all. TY so much for sharing the great talent
I am amazed how deeply loved this Ukrainian Christmas carol has become around the world!
It's the most rocking Carol ever
🇺🇦
It's one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
Not really a carol in Ukraine, though.
It’s my favorite! I listen to Carol of the Bells everyday!
song known as “Carol of the Bells” was originally a Ukrainian folk chant “Shchedryk” arranged by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych🥰🥰🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Hi from Ukraine 😄 you're right
Its one of my favorites!
@@karolinakorbelova7146 Priviet!
I’ve learned varying difficulties of this on the piano over the years and never knew this! That’s so cool!
I was wondering why it's always been my favorite. I grew up listening to this song.
I imagine it was probably a struggle to keep the cello in tune. My home is higher up in the mountains and during the winter my violin strings are often like "nope, we're out. Bye." and I'm like "but I love you, Whhhhy?"
Haha. Random thoughts. This is my favorite variation of Carol of the Bells. =)
I do like Pentatonix' version, but this one is so good!
This may be late but it goes out of tune because how cold it is outside
@@moilar7985 Listen to the trans Siberian orchestrael version. You won't be disappointed.
pretty sure, like all music videos, the sound recording is probably done in a studio. cell also maybe a cheap replacement
Have you considered mechanical pegs? They're great in the winter.
This is beautiful. 2nd to Pentatonix singing it. Love both versions so much.
Agree! :D
u know it
Try the third one ))ua-cam.com/video/GqeJ38DThVc/v-deo.html
I have no idea why cellos dazzle my heart- but they surely do
So beautiful..love the beat..and the Spirit of this Holy Season of Christmas.
Merry Christmas🎄🎄🎄🌺💗
his facial expressions make me so happy
I watch and listen to this every year when it's nearing December.
Beautiful! Merry Christmas everyone!
and merry chrismas happy new year
Carol Of The Bells is the one Christmas song I have loved since a very small child. This hands down is my favorite version and has been since I heard and watched this video 10 years ago. And I love all the beautiful Utah scenes they used. I was born and raised in Utah so it has a very special place in my Heart
@Steven sharp Nelson I'm sorry but who are you and how did we "meet" on here?
These guys have taught me to appreciate the cellos versatility a lot more.
cello. what a wonderful gift to the world
I think string instruments are a wonderful thing. it's why I picked up violin as a child, my sister played.
I keep coming back to listen to this wonderful and breath taking rendition. Thank you guys for giving so much to so many. It is deeply appreciated.
Just heavenly! Sun, rain, snow, fire…. Glorious any way!
This was the first video of the piano guys that I watched almost 5 years ago, and ever since then, I got addicted to their channel and I have wanted to play the cello since.
Wow, I grew up in a very musical family and I never knew that Carol of the Bells was from a Ukrainian Christmas Carol. This is great! Thank you!
Love the Piano Guys----so talented---their music is amazing---music breaks all barriers and creeds---so uniting!!!
Can we all just appreciate how freaking shiny those cellos were?
It's obviously a piece of junk...probably Chinese. The urethane finish is a giveaway. You'd never take a fine instrument out into that cold.
@@gitrpicker Your need to flex your knowledge of string instruments over strangers on the internet is telling at best. Fun piece of information though, I have learned something new
No, they're not pieces of junk. The sound is very mellow. Stephen has at least five cellos, and he has taken them everywhere. And what's wrong with keeping a good cello clean, shiny, and varnished?
Besides that, a good musician can get a good sound out of any instrument, good or bad.
The timbre would be a much brighter sound if it were a cheap instrument.
That probably was right around freezing. That's 32°F. That's not too cold. And, yes, good performers do take their instruments out into amphitheaters when it is cold. Every marching band member in football halftimes. You don't think clarinets aren't made of wood? You don't think they're subject to cold temperatures? Many of those are the bands members' own professional instruments.
Musical instruments get used in the elements.
Watch some of the other videos like "Peponi" and "Let It Go" with Vivaldi cameo. In arctic ice and atop a mountain. Both different kinds of extremes. Jon's piano, too.
So fine to watch your playing transcend you into joy and humor. Thank you.
Every single atom in existence is sound ..i mean vibration is the base of existence!
...thank u for the breathtaking music!
We are dancing this at ballet. Couldn't ask for a better song to make the choreography 😍

Just finished playing this in a Christmas concert at my high school in a sextet. Thanks for the inspiration, guys!

Thank you for the passion and joy you put into this piece. You made it not only fresh but fiercely joyous. One of my fsvorite secular carols, elevated.
Watched this every year it’s been out so far. And don’t plan to ever stop. This is an amazingness in video form. Thanx you
The cold weather must have been hard on those bow strings! There are a lot of shots with fraying bows, and just about all of them have Steven in earmuffs and/or you can see his breath in the cold air.
Does he mind? Of course not! He's Steven Sharp Nelson, a passionate musician and (apparently) a very optimistic human being. Always smiling, or expressing his very visceral emotions, he is truly a joy to see and hear perform.
Thank you again for beautiful stunning music and performance.
No doubt the music track was recorded in a studio rather than beside a stream, on an ice rink or along a mountain range. But the notes he played would certainly be hard on the bow strings.
Steven Sharp nelson is an amazing person! He is my third cousin once removed but I have never met him.
Stop giving me goosebumps I’m cold
Amazing talent...can tell where the heart is...never forget who gave you the gift...with fondest admiration...
Beautiful...simply beautiful. Encore, encore.
Am I the only one who noticed his bow's strings flying about in some of the shots?
I can literally not watch this video anymore without focusing on it going "wheee!" XD
i notice it too
same
as a cello player myself, when a bow string comes undone, you can play without them. my guess is that it came off in practice and he did not realize it until after.
In some instances, as I see, the strings are repaired, so I think one of two things happened here. One, he realized that the strings were broken after the first or second shoot and had it repaired afterward before the next shoot. My second guess is that it may have been repaired earlier and it seemed to have broke in the time between shots of him playing and he did not have enough time to repair it, so he just went with it. (This is all just speculation)
I think that's his "stunt cello" and I'm guessing he uses an old bow to go with it. He uses that cello when he's in cold, humid, or otherwise non-cello friendly locations.
God I can’t believe how beautiful this is..and powerful, there is so much beauty in this!
I listen to anything the Piano Guys PLAY. All year long. Love them. Marvelously talented.💞
Breathtakingly lovely. I really like this unusual arrangement.
its pouring rain driving home this year🌧 yet still this tune is beautiful and always raises my spirits! wow!!!💜✝️🎄 Merry Christmas!!!😊🎁🎅
Fills my heart with the joy of Christmas! Outstanding!
Beautiful, love this song. I have had the privilege to play this on bells many years ago. This song makes your heart feel light.
Wow!!! Such talent. Beautiful rendition!
Beautiful arrangement! One of my favorite Christmas songs! 🎄
This is absolutely amazing! The combination of the sound of the cellos with each other is hands down riveting and is extremely beautiful. Happy Holidays!
Truly one of the best renditions of this song I have ever heard!
I love his smile! He was enjoying the whole thing.
Can't wait for their next arrangement: "The Twelve Days of Christmas for Thirteen Cellos".
2020!! If you are STILL ALIVE and watch this....Congratulations!!!!!
Very nice, especially enjoyed the winter scenery around him as he played the cello.
Still come back to this song all the time! Love it Piano Guys!
Strings and bow hairs are two VERY different things. Let us be very clear on this.
Thank you.
yes
i like it
+Darcy Erinaceinae You are right. strings are thin lines of cotton. Bow strings are horse hairs. So they are two different things.
+Slippery squid same thing with violin
Stuff like this is UA-cam's only redeeming feature.
+Flying Potatoes and black sails vids
don't forget papa franku
This does redeem UA-cam for all the stupidity it lets get by, in addition to some of the other music, uplifting animals-being-rescued-videos, cute animal videos, and actually USEFUL things on it. But just barely.
I thought stuff like this made youtube fall into a magical place not many people know of. HELL.
I mean, in the beginning [I'm a 6th grade cello player] he was just whacking his cello with his bow as it had several loose and flopping hairs. Not to mention the quick cut scenes made it hard to actually see him play.
And this is supposed to be a piano!!!!!
Thank you for this. This brought tears to my eyes.
I felt in love with these guys listening to this song several years ago ❤
This group is Amazing!! I just bdiscovered them this year & I am Absolutey Impressed!! There playing made my Christmas!! There rockelbels canon is hysterical!!
Welcome. The Piano Guys made me think there was still hope for the world. The videos are all beautiful as well, sacred sound, sacred video.
Hark! how the bells
Sweet silver bells
All seem to say,
"Throw cares away."
Christmas is here
Bringing good cheer
To young and old
Meek and the bold
Ding, dong, ding, dong
That is their song
With joyful ring
All caroling
One seems to hear
Words of good cheer
From ev'rywhere
Filling the air
Oh how they pound,
Raising the sound,
O'er hill and dale,
Telling their tale,
Gaily they ring
While people sing
Songs of good cheer
Christmas is here
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
On, on they send
On without end
Their joyful tone
To ev'ry home
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ, our Saviour
Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
So glad to listen to the Piano Guys at Christmas. Merry Christmas to everyone.
