Its like the exterior building looks bad but the locals are always interested in what I'm doing here and strike up a convo. It's all about picking a decent spot to sit when you're on your own, not in the way but not in a corner. Another great video!
Another Irishman here. It’s awful what’s happening all round the country. Towns just turning into dumps, shuttered shops everywhere, councils broke, but why are they broke? We pay enough for services don’t we? The councils like the useless government are only good at wasting money. And in ireland with their traitorous government are busy destroying what was once a beautiful happy country where people actually liked each other. Every where we look it’s just bad news.
I went to the art school in Batley in the mid 70s but lived off Halifax Rd in Dewsbury. The Victorian houses were beautiful and the little pub called the Bath was a lovely and friendly place run by a fantastic couple called Bill and Edith
Great vid Danny! God that looked an awful place… & if you can’t even get a decent pint then there’s not much to shout home about really🤷🏻♂️ look forward to Ireland proper Guinness👊
Admittedly people aren't going to pubs as much nowdays due to cost but look at the demographic, the people that live there just don't drink, much like Bradford.
@@HollowRick certainly take your life in your hands if you drive there - dont think 80% have a license or even passed a test. Found that when I was taxi driving , the Bradford area was one to be very , very careful - no insurance and several using the same taxi badge. But the authorities always turned a blind eye . Think they still do. And the councils are very good at wasting money on stupid WOKE ideas - just another smoke-screen for some person to syphon a bit off.
My dad lived in thornhill just 5 mins from dewsbury town centre, i remember going down to the town as a kid and how full of shops and people it used to be I haven’t been around there for about 5 years now as he’s moved from Thornhill but my god how it’s changed 😢
Back in the 70's I lived three or four miles away, there was a cinema, and my girlfriends posh mum used to shop at Marks and Sparks. There was a pub on the Batley Road which was the only place locally that sold Old Peculiar. In 1982, our kid's stag night started in Batley and crawled it's way towards Dewsbury, whilst the hen night ran the opposite way. When the two met up he and his fiancée buggered off at about 9:00 pm! We skipped a few pubs and spent the rest of the night drinking Old Peculiar. The next time I was there was in 2006, I went there to register Betty's death and it was pretty dire, I didn't go there again until 2015 after dad died to get a copy of his will certified. By then it had really hit rock bottom. Batley and Morley seem to have improved a little since the 70s, and maybe Wakefield too, but Dewsbury is dreadful.
Seen you today mate as our lass needed to go specsavers in town, didn’t want to be on cam but there is a good pub in dewsbury it’s the west riding at the train station give it a try if you pass back through with the added bonus you don’t need to go to the centre ha.
Really is mate and to be fair I avoid Dewsbury town centre at all costs and you nailed it in your video I just drive to Leeds and park at trinity as it’s just got it all going on.
@@Joel-xb3mxI'm Batley, it's pretty much the same here, it was buzzing from Batley to Dewsbury some 20 years ago the place was alive....it's dead now, it's a shame, but it's a sign of the times we live in.
Fab video , shame you didn't tell them that the Guinness was i drinkable. But I know what you mean sometimes it's hard to be borthered to kick up a stink ! Can't believe how beer prices vary so much in the uk , we're lucky to get a pint under £6.50 here Bath , 😢

I love stout including Guinness but I pretty much gave up drinking it in pubs many years ago due to the inconsistent quality - clearly evidenced here. So hats off to you although I don't feel like celebrating the point. Can't remember the name of it sorry as over a decade ago and out of my immediate area but there was a nice pub in or near Todmorden I called in out walking that served perfect Guinness and the landlord was a great welcoming type of fella, actually asked me if I wanted a top up and did so for nothing. Hebden Bridge not far away was also a place with a few good pubs back then don't know if that is still the case. They have good trade as that region has a few outdoor organizations and literary associations etc although they can be a bit too arty-posh crowd for some folk. There's always summat as they say in Yorkshire. You did the right thing leaving that pint on the table outside. Anybody thinking of ordering the same drink and seeing that would immediately be suspicious. The glass collector would also get the message without you having to cause a scene (although quite reasonable to have done so - I mean that wouldn't happen in Ireland right). 'Chemically.' Sounds like they had not rinsed the tubes out after sterilising. Probably a fresh keg that would have cleared after the first couple of pulls. You were just unlucky enough to land with the bad timing somewhere with a poor cellarman (showing my age) or today's equivalent. Looking at it the other way: if they'd taken better care of liquid refreshment and customer think of the great free publicity... . Thing is these days too many of them DO NOT.
Both pubs look good got some cheap and cheerful pubs like that near me but problem is with Guinness it needs to be bang on to be good, these type of pubs everyone’s on Carling or fosters Nice video tho mate keep it up👊🏼
Only place left to drink in Dewsbury in the day is the West Riding at the train station. Proper ale, proper beer and proper people. Everywhere else is just scummy.
@@saronasam I think you're forgetting that every person in the mill towns, of every race, became victims when Thatcher killed the industries. Don't fight the migrants who came and worked alongside you, blame those in power who caused the decline.
I was born in Dewsbury as were most of my family. Back in the day it was great town and many decent pubs to choose from. These days it is literally dying, if not already dead, as your vid shows and I seldom visit the place. Very rarely. As others have commented though there is still one great pub still in town namely the West Riding which is part of the railway station.
You should try Grantham mate. There’s a few decent pubs and it’s a town that has had decades of decline. It’s quite historic with Margret Thatcher and Issac Newton but in terms of shops it’s almost like a ghost town now, but it’s really decent for a drink.
Everyone keeps talking about the pub attached to Dewsbury station. It looks quaint from outside with the Virginia creeper covering the entire pub. Yes, it's got a good reputation for a great range of pints etc. The only thing that bowled me over when I went in there one afternoon was the overwhelming smell of body odour. The bar staff mustn't like opening the windows for fresh air! I've never been in since!
Strange smell when you enter the West Riding of mucky bodies. Quite strong on Saturday afternoon 20/07/24. My colleague said they had not been in for years and still smells the same.
He should have taken it back into the Pub and asked the bar staff to taste it. I certainly would have done. Leaving it on a table outside, some lowlife would have drunk it.
That looked grim mate , not many laughs in that place , West Cumbria is the place to visit next , down to earth people up there just don't forget to wear body armour 🤣👍
I enjoyed this. If you were to find yourself in Durham in the Queen Victoria you would find the landlord knows everyone drinking in his pub (I toddled in the other day) - plenty of regulars to strike up a conversation with. Didn't Dewsbury used to have a little pub on the train station platform? That's about all I remember of Dewsbury.
What are the odds? He's stood there asking the gentleman in the hat why the place is going down hill just as a fully clad letterbox walks past in the background 😂
It's the same with all channels like this. But I'm not surprised he doesn't answer because if he was honest he'd be immediately demonetized and likely have is channel canned.
yay - back to my home town - glad I left If you decide to return I have 2 tips. 1. Go to the cafe opposite the market. Called Mon Ami (I think), you walked past it in the video. No Guinness but a warm welcome and a cracking cup of tea. 2. Go to the pub at the train station. West Riding. Probably have Guinness, certainly have ales, again, good welcome, nice beers. Like the guy you spoke to said, I cannot believe Batley is now better than Dewsbury. Never saw that coming.
when I used to live a few miles up the road (Cleckheaton, 10-15 years ago) the best pub in Dewsbury was the West Riding Refreshment Rooms at the railway station, which even had an entrance on one of the platforms the other two major stations between Leeds and Manchester, Huddersfield and Stalybridge, also have pubs built into their stations
Oh please give it a break. The death of the high street and government underinvestment have affected towns badly all over the country. Yet you seem to be pinning the whole blame on a certain breed of new people. There are countless examples like Dewsbury without the 'certain breed' you're talking about all suffering these same problems.
There isn't one "native British" person that isn't hard working, law abiding socially responsible is there? All the litter, fly tipping, cars on blocks and junk filled gardens, youths illegally riding motorbikes, speeding cars, drug dealing, anti social behaviour. It's all foreigners in innit.
Dewsbury was a nice place in the 1970’s/ early 80’s. Now it’s the only place I know of where even McDonalds closed up! Shocking what’s happened to that town. There are a few nice pubs there though, particularly the one on the Railway station and there’s an Ossett Brewery one.
I was born in Dewsbury in 1973, grew up in Mirfield and moved to the South East of England in 1998. I will NOT be back. What a depressing shit hole it is now. BTW Ravensthorpe between Dewsbury and Mirfield is like a demilitarised zone.
You should have a pop back up to Mirfield for a visit, it's still nice and going strong. Plenty of pubs still open and new places opening over the years.
I lived in Ravensthorpe and Dewsbury Moor from the 1970's to 2000 then moved away for a while. Moved back to Ravensthorpe in 2006 it had changed so much. East European gangs, prostitution, money laundering take aways, terrible traffic. I now live in Somerset, its a different world, I'm s happy
Same, born Dewsbury 1973, I live in Batley, have all my life and it's marginally better than Dewsbury right now (...but not by much I'm afraid) ... Everything's gone now that used to give the area a good vibe, all the pubs are shut and the high street is almost non existent. Pretty sad times really.
Get ya Sen ova to Doncaster pal, never mind that scrap. Still plenty of good folk in my hometown n proud to be a Yorkshire man from Donny. Wool market and masons arms is brilliant any day of week. Top man, stay up 🫡
I agree. I'm nearly 73 and remember in the 50s & 60's when towns were bustling and shuttered up shops were hardly ever seen. No one in authority gives a sh*t these days and to be honest, I just don't go out to the town centre anymore. The plastic pubs and the plastic beer are not worth it and nobody wants to talk anyway...unless you are part of their clique, otherwise they just glance over to see if you have a few bob or might have a warrant card. Anyway's, I wish I could say something on the bright side, but it looks like were' stuck on the shite side. Look after yourself kiddo ; )
This is because Dewsbury is under kirklees council. It's a poorer part of West Yorkshire. Lots of the shops has closed down. The outdoor market is pretty good and Cosmc Toys is an amazing shop.
Think that was the grimmest one you have done, the first pub looked like it was stuck in the 80s, the next one looked nice but obviously don't take care of their ales and from what I could see no decent cider only wrongbow, hope your next Guinness is on form, keep up the good work
You should come to Burton on trent. Home of brewing. There used to be a pub on every corner but most have closed but we still have some good old boozers I could name 8-10 for you to try
@honestplaces if you ever do decide to , the tavern, the Devonshire, the royal oak, the anchor, the wygestson , the leopard or the navigation to name a few are old boozers. The royal oak in the town centre is one of the oldest pubs (its been open and closed and then opened a few times though) the tavern one of the better ones they have lots of local and independent brews. Oh and there's the Burton bridge brewery where they brew their own but it's a pub too. Plenty to explore some I've not been for years tbh but they never seem to change.
Also the reason we are a brewing town was down to the water thry used to use from the river trent it was good for brewing apparently. And it's where carling is made haha. Coors (Bass) and Marstons are the active brewerys we have with plenty of their sites to see in and around town
Even the most multicultural, accepting and forward thinking places around the world that are enjoying economic growth have their little shit-hole corners. As well do places that are predominantly one culture but have very differing sides of the same towns / cities on economic levels. You can’t just blame everything on things “you’re not allowed to say”. It’s a lazy way out and a very contagious thought process by people who would rather wallow and blame about why they don’t have things as opposed to rolling their sleeves up and striving for even a little bit better or being adventurous enough to see what’s beyond the borders of their particular shit town and help themselves level up on the open mindedness front.
Bargoed town centre in Wales is much the same. Once a thriving town called " The metropolis of the valleys", Bargoed is now a ghost town. Empty shops. High level of unemployment.
I've had nights out in both Castleford and Pontefract back in 2000 when I was at uni in Sheffield and my housemate was from around Castleford so we went for a drink in both for a laugh. Both towns fecking rough as hell
I really fancy a couple of luke warm pints, a cheeky vape and I’ve got the urge to drop a couple of ton at the bookies. Any recommendations of where would be a good place to go?
Exactly, he would do us a better service to go to these places and preach from the New Testament then maybe he will have some idea of his Elbow from another part of his Anatomy.
Dunno about that!, I was at a cider house and I said to a Muslim bloke that wasn't it against his religion to drink alcohol, his reply was that it was ok as cider is classed as fruit juice, ok when it suits them.
I live in Thornhill just above Dewsbury, the first thing I noticed watching this is your comment on the Wonky Y. Yes its meant to be like that, but a few weeks ago it just disappeared altogether! Says everything you need to know about Dewsbur

And in ireland with their traitorous government are busy destroying what was once a beautiful happy country where people actually liked each other. Every where we look it’s just bad news.
No one here in Ireland calls it "Eire".

Admittedly people aren't going to pubs as much nowdays due to cost but look at the demographic, the people that live there just don't drink, much like Bradford.
for half the people who live in bradford it is against their religion to drink lol

Great content thanks 👍 Makes you appreciate having good pubs in your town (I’m in Edinburgh)
Cheers pal. Still yet to do Edinburgh
Ah should of said hello. Yeh i hear that is the only good joint in town 👍
Really is mate and to be fair I avoid Dewsbury town centre at all costs and you nailed it in your video I just drive to Leeds and park at trinity as it’s just got it all going on.
I grew up here in the 90s, left around 2001. This is utterly heartbreaking. Town was absolutely buzzing back then. Looks a right ghost town now

Sad to say it's still the same
Ever been to Barnsley ? 8am it's like a scene from the Star Wars bar.
Both pubs look good got some cheap and cheerful pubs like that near me but problem is with Guinness it needs to be bang on to be good, these type of pubs everyone’s on Carling or fosters
Nice video tho mate keep it up👊🏼
Only place left to drink in Dewsbury in the day is the West Riding at the train station. Proper ale, proper beer and proper people. Everywhere else is just scummy.
I used to spend most Saturday nights there late 80’s and early 90’s. Used to be a great night. Sad to see it now…
Was even better in the sixties, before the invasion..

Enjoy watching these vids. As I live in a place where you can't get Guiness, I was salivating at the one you left.
He should have taken it back into the Pub and asked the bar staff to taste it. I certainly would have done. Leaving it on a table outside, some lowlife would have drunk it.
Sound s like they didn't clean out the pipes with that Guiness. Had a mate who used to clean the pipes, he always drank bottled beer.
I know the taste of pipe cleaning fluid too well in these establishments. No excuse for it.

1. Go to the cafe opposite the market. Called Mon Ami (I think), you walked past it in the video. No Guinness but a warm welcome and a cracking cup of tea.
2. Go to the pub at the train station. West Riding. Probably have Guinness, certainly have ales, again, good welcome, nice beers.

when I used to live a few miles up the road (Cleckheaton, 10-15 years ago) the best pub in Dewsbury was the West Riding Refreshment Rooms at the railway station, which even had an entrance on one of the platforms
the other two major stations between Leeds and Manchester, Huddersfield and Stalybridge, also have pubs built into their stations
If it's still open, the best pub in Dewsbury is at the train station.
First guy didn’t want to say why it really went down hill but we all know. A certain breed of people moved in.
Oh please give it a break. The death of the high street and government underinvestment have affected towns badly all over the country. Yet you seem to be pinning the whole blame on a certain breed of new people. There are countless examples like Dewsbury without the 'certain breed' you're talking about all suffering these same problems.

There are a few nice pubs there though, particularly the one on the Railway station and there’s an Ossett Brewery one.

Christ mate, you're a glutton for punishment

I agree. I'm nearly 73 and remember in the 50s & 60's when towns were bustling and shuttered up shops were hardly ever seen. No one in authority gives a sh*t these days and to be honest, I just don't go out to the town centre anymore. Anyway's, I wish I could say something on the bright side, but it looks like were' stuck on the shite side. Look after yourself kiddo ; )

You should come to Burton on trent. Home of brewing. There used to be a pub on every corner but most have closed but we still have some good old boozers I could name 8-10 for you to try
Never thought of going to Burton 🤔🍺

@RichardHodgson-wb9lk Can't have the " good " places without the " bad ".
