@ Same!!! It ticks me off so bad. They’ve let Drake rewrite so many rules to keep his lame a$$ on top. Ghostwriting, the loss to Pusha (all of a sudden talking about 40 was too far but you mentioned his fiancé), cheating people out of their publishing (Migos - Versace Versace), & now trying to rewrite this loss to Dot with bots. Ugh, and all these east coast and especially NY guys who keep co-signing it irritates my spirit 😂😂😂
They have the nerve to have an issue with the new West Coast wave, when they championed subpar Drill rappers, Ice Spice, Cardi B etc. They need to make better music mainstream-wise.
My man Kendrick being everywhere is organic because he just come off the largest battle on Wax ever as the culturally most significant figure in this particular lane, not broader popular culture, hiphop and its foundational elements, of his generation. Kendrick was the largest figure representing that tradition, and a huge commercial success. Winning that battle did all the work. It didn’t require a label push at all. People keep overlooking how unique of a promotional boost that was. All doors open without any work so hes anywhere he wants to be because in this particular window of time they are coming to him. This is why the idea of not like us needing bots is stupid. That record is the least likely candidate for bots ever… in the history of streaming… because the world was tuned in as those records dropped and it organically trended so quickly to a level where bots were irrelevant before anyone had a chance to assess it, let alone decide to push it.
The "major label" influence is his pre-existing history and accomplishments. What I'm saying is UMG put a lot of energy into Kendrick early on in the past (GKMC days) and it paid off for them. I think a lot of these interviewers are really forgetting how big of an artist Kendrick is pre-this beef lmao. His last tour which was a SOLO tour was the highest grossing rap tour OF ALL TIME(big steppers tour) mind you it was just Kdot and Baby Keem, his cousin. .... Kendrick has multiple multi-platinum singles, 17 Grammy Awards (not nominations) , won a Pulitzer freakin Prize , one of the biggest national anthems in "Alright" and he's the Exec Producer for the Black Panther soundtrack.. one of disney and marvel's highest grossing super hero films .. multiple hit collabs and arguable one of the most commercially and critically acclaimed album catalogs of the past 20 years across all genres and had already performed at the Superbowl prior to this beef..... and he's also never in headlines and his brand is unproblematic...That's like saying "The NBA helped LeBron win a championship" ... yeah.... by drafting him at 18.. the rest is just history and personal choices lmao.... ... The bottom line is ... this music business is a business .. You think a label is going to tell an artist what they can't say? If that was the case "drill rap" wouldn't exist... the true anser the answer is no UMG is not liable for what an artists says and nor is that the business that they are in... Now Management and A&R's might tell an artist what not to say but not the same as the label and Drake already knows that given he's a huge artists too, this music biz 101 stuff. Drake literally wanted his label to cheat for him by silencing Kendrick and that makes sense since Drake doesnt write all his own raps and saying hes the "goat" lmao Also this was literally the biggest rap beef since Jay vs. Nas... the only difference is NLU is a hit record, a hit music video and hit concert on Amazon Prime and Drake is being called some disgusting things that he doesn't know how to defend against (which him not being able to defend himself about something so heinous is the bigger issue) .... Drake is understandably distraught over this lost and tbh we all understand but the way he's handling this is telling..... but lets stop down playing Kendrick's status in music.. the stats are there.
