Crazy how many creative and artistic people I know personally and see in the comment section here that went down the engineer path yet still are pursuing art.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who had the 'talk' with the parents about making money and a 'career job' vs 'a hobby activity' when I graduated high school.
Marcs videos, more than anything, have showed me that you have to fight and work to become better. Especially when you don't feel like it. That's why I'm so appreciative of the "one year of drawing" he created. Not only does he show that you'll have to work to become better, but provides a framework to do it. It's only been a month and I already have seen myself improve. I can't wait to see where I'm at in 11 months.
You can have a career and pursue art as a hobby…. Realistically not everybody is gonna be HUGE on social media and live off drawing anime girls with pouty lips….
that is not how all artists make a living..

Another engineer student here!.
Going to art school was one of the worst decisions I made. It completely killed all desire for me to pursue art as a career and I stopped making art pretty much all together afterwards. It’s only now, 10+ years down the line that I’m pursuing it once again and thanks to Marc’s videos and his art school I’ve learned more in the past 2-3 years than I ever did in college. Should I ever make it a full time career then he’ll be one of the first people on my list to shake hands with and say thank you.

@@practicedart sorry for a late reply to this one but it’s gonna be a long one. So, they sold me a lie on not only the quality but the actual content of the curriculum of their course. They did this by advertising students work that wasn’t actually students work, it was tutors work under a fake student name. My class consisted of literally 9 people if that, 3 of which where older than 40, not that it’s a bad thing to be an older student but the ratio was particularly off. Out of those three one had a pretty severe mental handicap and clearly should have been somewhere that he could actually be helped but they used the course as a cheaper alternative health care for him and it was disruptive.
The only art, design and theory covered was literally primary, secondary and complimentary colors. There was no draughtsmanship or actually skill based classes and everything was essentially “anything can be art so just express yourself” ergo meaning there was NO standard to be met and since you can’t grade ‘creativity’ that left everyone with no sense of direction. Despite this the art I liked to produce was ‘wrong’ because I liked to make things look recognizable.
Composition, lighting, advanced color theory, art theory, etc where not to be found at all. They passed off everything from a high school (British high school) standard art class as ‘illustration’ so even basic pottery was considered illustration, fine for a high school or even college course but not for a University Bachelor Degree in a specific 2D art form meant to cover children’s books, scientific illustration and technical drawing? Not what we paid for or was advertised. By all means I love abstract art and creativity but you can not sell that as a meaningful education because again, there is no standard.
I wasn’t ‘allowed’, despite being an adult all be it a young one, to associate with my fellow classmates in the year or two above me because they had been sold the same lie only they’d experienced the stripping back of the classes they were supposed to have along with the resources and their tutors fired. One of their tutors chose to leave due to a mental break down caused by the treatment they received, one of them was not told he wouldn’t be returning and was fired on the spot as he turned up to start in the new school year. Which also gave him a mental breakdown.
We got gaslit about what was promised about the course by the ‘new’ head of art. There was a girl all the way from Mexico who, along with the theme, had a breakdown because she’d come to England specifically to study there and wasted so much money as she said to be their - she was not particularly affluent. Another student got too sick to go, the next just gave up all together, a third was so mentally unstable and shy she disappeared off the face of the earth, so by the end my class was maybe 5 people and 6 on a good day.
We got sent between different courses to fill our time because there was no substance to what we had actually paid for. So we’d just be sent to graphic design one week or to photography the next. It was a shambling shit show.
I’m not from a wealthy background but it still lumped me in thousands of pounds worth of student loans that I’ll never likely pay back at least but someone’s had to pay for it. I came away with pretty severe anxiety and a sense of hopelessness around being any kind of artist and eventually gave up on my dreams because well, who would want to go through that again? That’s why I love these UA-cam channels with so much knowledge and passion to give for free too.
I at least made some lifelong friends from the years above me as we ended up brothers in arms against the place but yeh… it left me completely done with university. I continued to do art and ‘teach myself’ but well at some point you have to pay the bills.
Sorry for the rant there but that’s essentially a nutshell of what happened lol
I'm a self-taught automotive exterior designer and I can approve the experience of just drawing at an early age. The difference being I was drawn to cars and so I naturally got better at sketching cars, I gained speciality and now I'm better at it than ever. Currently I'm a designer in a start-up performance vehicles company operating from the US! And on the side I'm working on a manga of my own which would be published next year!

I dropped out of art school during the first year of COVID and I’ve felt rudderless for the last three years so discovering your program gave me a new motivation to focus on my portfolio and refreshing on the fundamentals.

Good for avoiding art school. My school got probed by the government and then shut down. It's one of the worst decisions I've made in my life. In addition, the school had a political and censorship agenda.
Nothing can get screwed up quicker than adding a bit of government to it; that sucks.
@Half Warrior Artist 67 no. The government protected the future students. The school was basically a type of racket for the Republican party. Created to have an unfocused curriculum and one that saddles debt to limit students like slaves.
This happened to many of my friends after a local and well-known art college lost accreditation (it was also a mix of significant post-education employment stats being largely in non-art fields and the naturally-following declining enrollment). It feels like arts schools are such a risk to ever enroll in unless it's one of the huge globally-renowned ones like CalArts.

I have been lost in my way of pursuing my art passion ever since i restarted it back in the middle my college days, almost 6 years ago.
Now, having graduated and having all the free time, i am torn between having to find job with a very difficult degree or to start again with my art career.
I find middle ground by keep looking for minimum pay job but keeping on practicing my art, but still, moving forward seems to vague for me. That is when your channel appears on my feed with the video that i desperately need. Here's hoping i'll improve for the better, and thank again for all the tutorials marc. Salam dari Indonesia!

I have always wanted to be an artist but my parents didnt want to since they didnt see it as profitable, after seeing this video I decided to have the "talk" with my parents and at first they seemed scared that I was going to the wrong path but after witnessing the determination I have they finally supported me. I may never be able to win millions of dollars but if I can live well doing what I love I am happy with that.
A message to everyone on the comments going through the same: Your parents do really love you and care for your future, in their generation art wasnt as profitable as is it now but just show them. theyll do anything for you. You can do this
Marc has been a total inspiration to me, and I've been following his unofficial art schedule for the past month trying really hard to improve my skills. People like him and the other artists on UA-cam giving us great advice have been the greatest motivation for me to push myself every day.

I did most of what you did in this video, reminded me of my early days of drawing. All I did was copy draw stuff I wanted to replicate. I didn't really take criticisms as I never knew what that was until later. Now I'm learning my art fundamentals and trying to take things more seriously

I was learning the programming in university, and I left it to have it the hard way. I learned what I needed by myself in a year, then worked as a freelancer, then got a job. Nice to know there are people who can do stuff themselves too

thank you teach, videos like these from you are really reassuring, even if it's just repeating the fact that you're a self-taught and got to where you are thanks to your passion and hard work. It probably reignites the spark for some or just gives them a tiny push which is truly amazing. Seeing your old works and scribbles helps a lot too, at least we know that we all really started in the same way haha
I need to say that we're really lucky to have you as a mentor and teacher, it's so much easier to have everything laid out (what fundamentals to learn for example) for a beginning self-taught artist and an amazing course that's way cheaper than any art school but still teaches and prepares you so well for future studying.

i was literally thinking abt getting an art job without an art degree since i want to major in smth else, and this video popped out. thanks marc! also can you do a video on how to put different elements together? i have problems w drawing the hair, and drawing the hair itself tbh isn't that hard but what i find the most difficult is to put together the hair and the rest of the head.

I feel this on a spiritual lvl😆...back in 2020 I landed a Job as a full time illustrator but sadly I had to quit because I needed to go to college for my IT degree, and I can fully say invest early on on your portfolio that's gonna be a big asset at landing a job it's not the amount of followers or likes that will help you it's the quality and variety of your art💙

It's important to find a good art school if you want that under your belt... I enrolled in CG Spectrum, which I love so much. My mentor is an incredible artist and just the sweetest dude ever. Classes are small, no more than 3 other people, and every week you meet up via zoom to chat about the assignments, ask questions, share tips. I've even made friends with my classmates - connections are always important! I've had terrible experiences with art classes in the past but CGS really changed my mind on it. I didn't want to go into the industry without any sort of professional training because I just didn't have the confidence or know how. Taking these classes I've seen considerable improvement, plus I now have certificates I can use. If not for employers, than for myself, as a way of saying 'you *can* do this, look, this certificate says so!'
Through your programm I turned from an absolute beginner to having a better portfolio, than most bachelor of illustration graduates in less than a year .(talking about my region) Thank you!
Funny. I'm also studying Software Engineer even though I mostly don't enjoy it. But unfortunately living in a country where art is non-profitable is the sad reality I am in. But I still aim to achieve my goals one day and land that dream job as a concept artist
A good friend of mine is a comic book artist. he’s fairly well known and has done work for the major comic brands so I won’t say his name for privacy. But he started art school, hated it, and dropped out. Never stopped him one bit, and he’s still one of the most talented people I know.

While social media helped by giving me a push into pursuing art and try getting seriously good at it, I feel social media also ruined me, and now I am struggling to get back on track of just enjoying the process. I recently quit twitter, because I was fed up with likes, retweets, followers, and the usual twitter drama about whatever. And I have gotten into this awful mindset that all my drawings need to be the best it can be, always, and that mistakes are a waste of time. And I hate that I have developed this mindset. I struggle to draw anything without that annoying voice in my head telling me that I should share it every step of the way. It's like I am not drawing for myself anymore.

I think college and art school are an awesome place for connections but...literally all the "education" you need is online and practically for free. An artist needs to spend time making stuff and as you improve you will find more and more people impressed with what you do. The trade secret is that really good work or very unique work sells itself. This is why kids out of high school get hired very quickly and I think most professionals that want to work with you would tell you to accept a little on the job training over remedial art classes. Marc is right to preach fundamentals but don't underestimate your own innate ability to discern whether something is "cool" or not. Nobody cares how hard you work. It's really just about the final product. If it saves you time to trace something and have reference pictures all over the place then do it. Every color and shape has already been made redundant by nature, itself. What you have to offer is your own spin on things and that's really it. Ultimately there is no "right way" to do it. But it's probably just common sense to seize any opportunity that gives you experience, connections, and feeds your inner creative spirit.
Damn, my child years ressemble so much to what you mentionned, tried art school but it wasn't for me, the fact of having " homeworks" and things to deliver with themes I didn't really like, killed my motivation and made me art block for now a ton of years. It's just revently that I want to give it a try again, but with my actual job I have so less spare time that I only use it to relax.

Marc's Art School is fucking awesome. I love it. It's ~$500 USD but thats not even the price of a semester at the university I went to. If I has found this when I graduated I would have done this instead of going to art school.

I was at a loss for what to do but I liked computers and I liked art. So I went to one of the Art Institutes for graphic design. I think I had maybe one teacher who encouraged me at all with..well..anything. I got the degree, never used it to do design..and stopped drawing for over 10 years

Hey Marc! What are your thoughts on drawing from life versus photo reference? Some say drawing from life is better than reference, but I don't understand why. It also seems inconvenient to have to draw from a live model every time you wanted to create a piece.
I've never gone to an art school, mostly because in my country, if you study art it's the same as starving to death, that's why I chose engineering, but I've learned more from you than from the university I say this because there is a part of the university where they put art works and very few do stand out with good design and art, most are ugly or lack qnatomy or something like that
I am in a science program and drawing a lot. I am 35 and not so young as I once was, I’m going to try and stick to science and art as a hobby….wish me luck lol
I stopped drawing to focus on my computer science studies when I was in college🥲In my country being an artist is not profitable and I wasn't good enough either so I decided to focus on a career that would get me a job faster. Now that I feel somewhat financialy stable I have been drawing again and thanks to your videos I have improved a lot! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!!🥰🥰

I put off the yearly schedule because i wanted to get started when that comes out.
Damn I'm currently in school thinking doing computer engineering and I draw a lot as a hobby. I also always used to copy art from anime since like age 5 or 6
Ok, you were going to be a computer engineer, well that is the same as me except I went to uni and now I'm in year 3 term 2, and hardly gain any knowledge, I hate every single second of it and also realized just recently that I want to draw and do 3D modelling more.
I wish I had more than enough money so I could get access to the program. But Ill still work hard developing my fundamentals.
Wow, I'm glad I'm dirt poor enough to not go in art school. As time goes by, going pro is probably not something I could go now, mind if I ask what's your advice from what you mentioned in the video "A popular hobbyist"? can it generate at least a level of earnings? I wanna keep practicing and hopefully set up a patreon, hopefully I can juggle that and another job outside the artistic world.

Hey Marc, I have question. Do you consider line art a fundamental art skill? I was just curious because I didnt see it in the starter guide

I did studied art on high school and later become graphic designer and art teacher for 12+ years.
I know we artist are self learners but art schools give you fundamentals of art techniques, history and if you have good teacher it can spark passion for art more then anyone. You also work with same minded students and teachers which can inspire you and give you ideas or conslultation about your work.
It's easier to learn digital art now more than ever but you can watch millions of youtube tutorials and learn nothing. You must actually do try to draw or paint as often as possible (including traditional art). You can also grow up faster as artist (and person) with real mentor.
I would also advise to take at least 1 year art course if you choosed to study different school but you still love art and want to get better in it.
Going on art school was best decision in my life and it also gives me degree and oportunity for profesional art jobs.

Got shoehorned into an art college, specifically for sequential art for the sake of getting the diploma and the connections that come with it, because parents being as stubborn as they are won't accept that being an artist without art school is a possibility (I don't blame them since they just want to give me the best chance of getting employed, I'm not in a STEM course because well long story short I burnt out during lockdown and lost the chance). I can't say I enjoy it, but the friends and teachers do make it a bit more entertaining at least, though I feel guilty sometimes because the things they take a whole semester to teach can be boiled down to a 5 minute tutorial on UA-cam and my skill level (not to boast) seems relatively high compared to their standards, so it just doesn't feel worth the amount of money my parents worked hard for. I basically speedrun assignments and then focus on my own work as much as possible, and I'm trying to apply for a scholarship to take the burden off my parents' backs. So yeah, Marc is right, but I kinda feel like crap because he is since it's really discouraging knowing I'll probably come out of this course learning nothing new, and probably learning more from free internet resources. What a waste of time and money, but alas, if it makes my parents feel at ease I'll do it. Hopefully I can possibly get a gig or maybe somehow get lucky with more followers and drop out early, but for now it doesn't seem to be the case.
