    Magnificent Mr. Jacomet! Your sentiment and passion was captivating! At times, I believe because I try to be gentle and kind to others, and focus on others, that they take my kindness for weakness. Then my wife tells me, it is for the very reason that I am kind and gentle and that I always put her first is the reason she fell in love with me. When we are going out on a date on an elegant occasion, I always ask her what color dress is she wearing. When I wear my suit, I attempt to wear a necktie that matches the color of her dress. When I do this she smiles and I sense her pride in me, because she knows that my heart’s desire is to compliment her and have her be the focus of attention.

    Hugo I was hanging on every word of this. Honestly, such an interesting and thought provoking video. These perspectives and facts are important because the concept of being a gentlemen was really at the core of Western European culture, and helped to shape style, art, science, politics and society throughout Europe. This is especially true in British culture as well, where chivalry was still a concept that was propagated up to the First World War and arguably up to the Second. Unfortunately it is much less so now and has been commercialised rather than discussed for its virtues. This is why I am such a fan of the British style, because to me it always has seemed virtuous even moral, to dress and act quietly, discreetly but still with authority. Thanks again. Josh.

    I'm so fortunate to stumble upon this channel. As a woman, I always admire the silhouette of a suit, and I enjoy wearing crisp white shirts (billowy ones, like the Romantic poets over fitted pants (cigarette pants?). In my mind, I always see an image in the styles of equestrian and aviator ('20s) style, but much pared down--softer but structured. And there will always be a scarf. The ensemble, like perfume, is a (pleasurable) must... a uniform so to speak. Thank you, Hugo, for generously sharing your wonderful insights.

    If he is well mannered his reflection to other and what they see makes him either a gentleman or a rogue!
    Also the girls should be taught what to expect from a gentleman and what to expect from a gentleman!

    Dear Hugo, I’m a professor of the history of international law, teaching this semester a course on the resolution of ethnic conflicts. I’ve recently used this video to demonstrate to my students the qualities which diplomatic negotiators would have to bring forth in order to succeed in their task of ameliorating conflict - these gentlemanly qualities you talk about: kindness, providing all parties the possibility of feeling at ease and comfortable with the negotiator, the negotiator’s ability to keep confidentiality, and protect the weaknesses of the parties - yet always celebrate their strengths and good sides. Thank you for your work.
    You might have perhaps not imagined - but your impact even reaches into our field of diplomacy in ethnic conflicts. And yes - dressing well as mediators and negotiators (albeit WITHOUT being judgmental about the dressing habits of others) also increases credibility - and respect !

    To me, as a lover of medieval history, a gentleman was a powerful statesman with peerless marital prowess. Elon Musk and Jocko Willink combined in one human, clad in tailored suit of steel. This was the ruling warrior class. However. What separated the lord from the gentleman was kindness towards the weak. Gentleness. While most lords wouldn't flinch as they ordered a city massacred, a gentleman would spare the innocent.
    To summarise: A gentleman was a monster who showed restraint - A term which doesn't easily translate into our moral language.

    What a great video, Hugo! I have a question though. You mentioned that a gentleman should let his wife shine when they are out together. When I go out and about to run errands and other things, I enjoy dressing in a suit or just a jacket, maybe with a tie, maybe without one. My wife often says that I am dressed too fancy and feels that she doesn't look as good when we are out together. But the issue is that she does not want to take the effort to wear nicer clothes (she just wears normal clothes like the public does these days) and would prefer if I were to dress down. What would you recommend in this recurring situation since I enjoy dressing well, but I also want to keep my wife happy. There must be many men in this situation and not just me. Thank you very much!

    • @SARTORIALTALKS
      @SARTORIALTALKS  6 років тому +4

      Hey Chris, this is an unusual question as I thought the reverse situation was much more frequent (guys who don't want to dress up). Well if I were you I would go slowly and try, step by step, to invite her to accompany you on this elegant path. Maybe you should be a little softer and don't go directly to a full suited and tied outfit, in order for her to feel a spark of interest. Maybe you are simply overwhelming her. Give her a chance to keep up with you. Cheers and good luck ! Hugo

      She will dress better if she feels more confident! If you compliment her strategically, perhaps mention something nice she once wore out, telling her how wonderful she looked, or even go so far as to buy her a small gift - earrings, a scarf, something like this - and tell her “I saw these and thought of you”, I promise things will improve. She will feel more beautiful and want to dress up!

    following up on your previous video about English vs French vs Italian styles, would you say that the English with their understated approach would be in essence closer to the modern definition of gentlemen, and the Italians would be at the other end of the spectrum?

    • @hugojacomet428
      @hugojacomet428 6 років тому +16

      Dear Max, that's a good yet complex question because being a gentleman is, in my humble opinion, not only about how you dress but also how you behave. But culturally speaking, the English man, in his manners, traditions and etiquette, is probably closer to the idea we have of a gentleman than an exuberant Neapolitan man (that we also love, but for different reasons). Cheers, Hugo

    Thank you Hugo for this channel.
    In my opinion a gentleman is someone who respects others and take into consideration needs of others (but not particularly associated with a niche style, even though one thing doesn't preclude the other, the more gentleman aims for his style, the better and will inspire on a bigger scale).
    A leader / manager, who steers a wheel of a company / team in a right direction, needs to take important decisions without taking into account all opinions (but not disrespecting them, only making sure she / he does it for a benefit of them).
    Could be a leader a gentleman? And if so, how?
    Thank you for your opinion.

    If one would like to do more research on the topic of the gentleman, what would you recommend ?
    This was an inspiring video, well done! This is truly a brutal world and I agree that a more ‘gentle’ and honorable approach to one another is a good place to start.

      Hello Gustaf, you should read our website Parisian Gentleman, and maybe also a few reference books like Dressing the Man by Alan Flusser and True Style by Bruce Boyer. Best, Hugo

    There's a little English story for the definition of a gentleman.
    When you enter an estate and after looking around for the best dressed man and can't find him, you approach the gardener, on his knees, covered in dirt, to ask him where the lord of the house is and he replies "I am the lord".

    I’m not sure I can be a gentlemen. It’s hard to put myself at ease. Not sure if I can make others relaxed. Also, I don’t dress nice to make people not look at me. I dress nice so people notice me. I guess I have to settle with being a rockstar instead.

    What annoys me is that my ex could use his gentleman behavior towards me in public just to make himself look good and then trash talk me behind my back making people think,look what I do for her and how she treated me.

    Hello, Monsieur Jacomet: I adore your videos and the wealth of information they provide, but if it is okay with you, I'd like to add a little grammatical tip that will perhaps help your future videos. I have noticed that sometimes when you speak of people, you use the pronoun "which." English being a rather horrible language makes it so that every pronoun has a different purpose and unfortunately cannot be used interchangeably. As such, the rules would be: 1) "Who" is used when referring to people, or something that is being used as a proxy for a person. The rule of thumb is, if one is speaking of a human, and one needs to refer to them with a "wh-" word, they would use "who." There is also the objective case of "who," "whom." An easy way of figuring out whether to use "who" or "whom" is to answer the statement or question where you use "who(m)". An example would be "____ did you give it to?" Then say in one's head, "I gave it to_____." In this case, it's "I gave it to him," so the question would be phrased as "Whom did you give it to?" If the statement were "I gave it to he," then one would say "Who did you give it to?" 2) "Which" is used for asking about multiple things, or for acting as a bridge to information that isn't necessary but can be helpful. An example of "which" as a bridge to a non-essential clause is, "that is the suit I was wearing, which is blue." One doesn't need to know that it is blue. "That is is the suit I was wearing" provides all the essential information. 3) "That" can be used like "who," except for things that aren't human. "That is a cute cat," etc. It is also used as a bridge for essential information. "This is the tailor that I use." If one were to say simply "This is the tailor," a necessary piece of information would have been cut out. I apologize for this lengthy comment, and if you know this material already, or I have offended you in any way, I apologize. Thank you for the amazing service you provide us all with!

      Dear Gabriel, thank you for your effort on educating a poor French man like me. I know very well all these rules, but as these Sartorial Talks are recorded "live" without any notes (it's our style and it is the reason why we call them Talks and not Lectures), as given the fact that English is not my mother tongue, I often make some mistakes. But we prefer to protect the natural feeling of our programs that to be grammatically perfect. It's a choice. But I promise I will do better and better with "which", "who" and "that". Cheers ! Hugo
