The media wants to rewrite history, but there was a time back in the bad old days of the 70s, where racial didn't always mean racist.
You could say things like: "them white boys can sure play some black music" without everybody losing their shit.

I think it's better than Cilla's version - just my opinion, of course. Also she does a great version of the song "I don't know how to love him", which was originally done in the music "Jesus Christ Superstar" by someone else.

True story. They were a rock band playing out one night in Youngstown. During a break, a group of black guys came up and said, "Dont you white boys play any funky music?"
So, he literally sat down after they were done playing that night and wrote the lyrics on the proverbial bar napkin. The next day he got together with the bass player and started working on the instrumental part.
The rest is, as they say, history. Thats how "VH-1 One Hit Wonders" explained it.

When this song came out back in the day I was a senior at an ultra conservative Christian college. Always toeing the line, prim and proper, doing the polite thang and feeling caged up. I heard this song on the car radio and absolutely flipped! it inspired me so much I went out the next day and bought me (a white girl) a huge purple Afro wig. I wore it to class and everybody was shocked! My professor said something snarky about it and I said "It's OK if you want to come over here and touch it." His face turned beet red and the class howled with laughter. He never said another word about anything else I wore, and I wore some wild stuff. And I got an A in that class! My mother was furious that I wore that purple Afro, so I went out and bought a multi-color Afro! My pastor dad laughed so hard and told me he was proud of me flying my Freak Flag! He thought it was fantastic! Oh.... those were the days!

Midnight special was the thing!!! It was on at midnight on Friday nights and it had all live music--rock, soul, everything!! The 70s was the ish!! I was a little girl for Midnight special and stayed up with my dad to watch!! Then on Saturdays we had Soul Train and American Bandstand for music and dancing.

Had a distant cousin who was a studio musician who played trumpet on the radio version. When Wild Cherry had a concert in a nearby city my aunt called his mom. She called our cousin and he got us front row tickets to the show! Our cousin went on to play with Doc Doc Severson on the Johnny Carson show then later with the Chicago Philharmonic orchestra after Johnny retired. BTW the show was awesome! Even though they only had one radio hit, the band really knew how to play funky music! Lol

I'm an older white lady, any of my friends of color don't get mad at being called black ( except 1). It's hard to define when only give a name only, when you have other friends with same name, just different color. One of my besties, Bethany knows how hard it is. When i say i seen Trish, she always asks white one or black. Yea she needed an answer. Bethany is black.
I was never offended by this girl, and we always had blast together. Sad she moved back to Alabama, because sure miss the young lady and her little girl- who mean mugged me all the time. So screw the whimpering Bitches that cry about you saying white boy etc.
Besides fact yet to see an accurate description that fits any color.
Black isn't really black, dark brown or chocolate maybe.
White folk aren't white, its a light tan. Or maybe cream?
LOL everybody is the same under that skin tone.

Remember the era this song was released in, don't look at it through today's hypersensitive lens.
The statement of this song was: "Hey look, black musicians and white musicians can get along just fine, hey look we're DOING IT! Look at us, we're a funk band with a white bass player! And he sings too! PLAY DAT MUSIC!"
The message of this song was 100% wholesome at the time (and still is).

Tower of Power - for more 70's funk and major horns

She was Nora in the first "Pete's Dragon" in 1977 when I was 2 years old.
She's part of the reason my 11 year old daughter is named Nora.
Thank you for, some days, being the only couple of minutes in a day that I'm not in a perpetual state of barely holding my shit together.
My internal dialog has consistently been just one long horrible 'scary movie scream of the first white girl killed' in every scary movie. It started in the beginning of March & has not stopped, not even to take a breath.

This song is the actual true story of what happened to this Band back in 1976 I think. They were the opening act for an all Black Funk Band. The two Bands were partying together on an off night while on tour. One guy from the funk Band yelled over to the Wild Cherry guys, and said "Hey, play that funky music white Boy." They all had a good laugh. The next day, Wild Cherry wrote this song on the tour Bus as a joke. When they played it at the next concert they did, it brought the house down. They recorded the song shortly after this happened, and the rest is history. They were "One Hit Wonders." This one song made them all very rich, as it became a worldwide hit, not just a U.S.hit song. I know all of this because I just saw an interview of the lead singer, and he is living in a mansion in Miami Beach Florida, with a Ferrari , and his trophy wife . All because of a dare from a guy in the other band. Looks like it worked out pretty well for him.
    Thanks
