I saw the last World Cup and the USWNT were technically inferior to European, African, Asian and South American teams in terms of individual quality and there are fundamental problems that could the USA decline even more. The men’s team were never the best team in the world, so had to learn from other countries how to develop players, so you got more technical men’s players like Pulisic, Reyna and Weah. But in the women’s game because the USA was the number 1 team, there was no learning from other nations in women’s youth development, women’s soccer developed in a very American sporting bubble physicality was more important. So having fast forwards, powerful big women who were powerful runners that were difficult knock off the ball and hard powerful long range shots that were dead from corners and had stamina to outwork teams. And this very primitive approach to football was enough to beat the world when they were amateur or semiprofessional. But the professionalisation of women’s football in the last 5 years has completely closed the 50 year head start the USWNT had and that primitive transition football the USWNT play doesn’t work now they are playing fully professional opponents who can match them for fitness but superior in technique and tactics so it is game over for the USWNT have fast wingers with no skill or flair doesn’t win games anymore and teams with technical midfielders who can control possession are dominating now and this is a fundamental weakness of the USWNT because technical play is neither coached or played in the women’s game in the USA.

ESPN FC-The reality is it’s not alarming no matter how much you try to sensationalize it. This isn’t the least bit surprising and it’s actually entirely expected if you’ve actually been objective and paying attention for years. American women had a huge head start because of Title IX. It was only a matter of time before soccer mad countries began replicating their men’s setups into the women’s game. It’s already becoming increasingly obvious that the American women are quickly getting surpassed with both individual technical skills and tactical team set-ups. The era of the American women automatically dominating is gone.

I think the bigger issue is the tactical gap. The team is still clearly technically more skilled than the non-European squads (excluding Japan). Smith, Swanson, Rodman, Lavelle can all dribble, turn, and shoot phenomenally, but the NCAA and NWSL style of physical transition play is just not developing any sophistication in possession. We're going to need more young players to go to Champions League teams in Europe if we want to see improvement.

@@Steve-606the lack of team cohesion was pretty stunning. Playing in "Panic mode" and not having any creativity on the ball. The US can't seem to play from behind very well. While we talk about Emma Hayes, she hasn't even shown up ... and had an opportunity to fully impact the team and the culture. The squad that goes to the Olympics will be a reduced 18, they need figure out a starting 11 and stick with it. Have that team develop the chemistry. Skill-wise, I feel they have a deep bench, but the USWNT need to figure things out because Concacaf is the least of their worries ... with France, Spain, England, Australia, Japan out there with very strong teams ... the Olympics will be interesting.

So right. Even when the USWNT were dominating against under funded amateur and semiprofessional teams the most technical and skilful players were coming from other countries, but the USA would win games by being fitter and more athletic because the title 9 collegiate system was the best funded female soccer program in the world so the USA had a massive physical advantage over teams that were full of girls who were amateur or part-time players who could train every day like the USA. Now you have fully professional teams from traditional soccer powers, the USA have lost the athleticism and fitness advantage and now the weaknesses in the US women’s game are being exposed because we are no seeing USWNT lack technical quality and tactical intelligence because USA female game has overemphasised training girls to be fast and powerful and not technical or skilful.

I am certain Emma Hayes will be focusing on the next World Cup. This situation was obvious to anyone watching from outside the US, where women's football has been turning professional.
What US sees as talented young players after college, the other teams would see as good athletes, lacking the experience of playing in professional teams from being teenagers. Emma will need time to sort out how your system works, not just tinker with the team setup.
Jude Bellingham is a star already for Real Madrid. Vicky López is a star for Barcelona women. England women have Aggie Beever-Jones, Jess Park and Grace Clinton coming into contention for places in the team, having come through clubs as professionals already.
Spain, France, Germany and Australia looked way better than US in qualifying for the Olympics. Lucky for US that Netherlands, Sweden and Team GB (via England) got eliminated already.
Lastly, Mexico look to have have focused on how Spain play. They were great. I commented before that it would benefit young US players to go play in Spain to get experience.

If she does manage to get US back in love with football, she will give them more potential success going forward and get a bigger talent pool for the here and now. Imagine US versions of Salma Parallueolo, US population size making it possible to have plenty of kids with talent and athletic ability.
My county, Yorkshire, has five million people, yet the front line attackers would be Beth Mead, Beth England and Rachel Daly, arguably better than US.

The lack of creativity in attack is the issue. If you take Sauerbrunn out for Girma, this is probably a 0-0 draw.
Move Horan deeper to help build up and take her out of the attack, she just can't run any more. Play Shaw and Moltrie as the 10s instead of Horan and Lavell. Be more direct at times in order to create space to play in between the lines. Likewise, be more wide in attack at times in order to stretch the opponent which will enable you to be more effective when you do attack narrow. And, obviously, play Girma.
