FIRST LOOK: Cadillac Escalade IQ - The 4-Tonne(!) Luxury SUV
Вставка

- Just how big and heavy is ‘too big and heavy’ for a family 4x4? Our American cousins usually like to supersize things, but the new all-electric Cadillac Escalade IQ takes things to a new and terrifying level.
Based on a stretched version of the double-decker battery carrying platform from under the Hummer EV, it’s a luxury SUV with 24-inch wheels, two cargo bays, up to eight seats, over fifty inches of screen, and good for a claimed 400 miles of range. And it weighs over four tonnes.
Is this the point where even the American public start to admit that enough is enough when it comes to SUV bloat, or is it merely the four-wheeled epitome of the American Dream?
Top Gear’s Ollie Kew has been for a closer look…

So, what are your thoughts on the Escalade IQ?
It’s quite heavy (not unlike other mega massive SUV/pickup EVs).
pure shit
A huge EV that needs to charge, but won't fit in my garage. Nice plan Cadillac. 👌
I want one.
As the famous American P.T. Barnum said: A sucker is born every minute!
“How does the height affect safety?” “Well u can load ur groceries” lmao what?.??
I really appreciate that they asked about that. Height is the real killer, hitting the vital organs head on with the grill will kill people. Lowering the front/belt line while keeping the same height would help a little bit, but it would be hard to stomach (morbid pun intended).
LoL
@@martinhubinette2254 Pedestrians are not human, they are game.
He was avoiding the question to a certain extent. While this is my guess, I presume that this is not being sold in Europe. A.) it’s too big and B.) it probably will not pass European pedestrian crash test safety standards. I very well could be wrong. Ollie also mentioned in a bit of a throw away, that it would not be going to the UK while commenting about the e-trunk.
I think this should have the swing-out school bus crossing arm so short people can’t be run over if they can’t be seen crossing in front! 😂
The European mind can not comprehend the Escalade.
I know! They are so scared of full size anything
It cannot comprehend the amount of compensation is going on with driving one, that's for sure.
The American mind here unfortunately comprehends the Escalade… 🤦♂️
Fat car for fat people.
As an European, I can perfectly understand it, as US roads and cities tend to be a lot wider than ours. Also, you travel for longer distances. A huge SUV makes sense for that purpose.
The amount of excess energy required to lug so much mass along with (typically) one person to go about their day is insane!
It gets over 50+mpge SMDH how many land rover and range rovers even smaller than this rip around sucking down petrol or diesel at 10-15mpg real world mpg in comparison?
An ice powered supercharged suburban or escalade would suck down 10mpg of premium gas at 7# each gallon in comparison. 🤔
@@4literv6 very true, but the poor credentials of other vehicles doesn’t make the concept of vehicles like this any less verbose (for most of its eventual use cases). But hey, the market has spoken I guess so fair play to Cadillac
I would like to see IIHS crash this into the side of a Camry. I think it might drive home the point that limiting the mass of non-commercial vehicles makes sense.
I drive a 5-Series which is a pretty robust and safe 4000+lb car, and I doubt I’d survive much of a collision with this… it literally weighs twice as much.
@@4literv6 That doesn't make this any less ridiculous. Massive EVs still have an enormous amount of tire particle emissions.
@@4literv6 Most country's road surfaces (nevermind footpaths) weren't intended to take this weight consistently.

What safety questions? To explain the difference between getting hit by a big SUV and getting hit by a giant SUV? Whether you're going to be dead or Dead? Good execs these days
He is the chief engineer. And he did already answer him that it meets the safety standards. Besides the fact that it has no engine it, so I bet it's actually safer than most European cars with engines in then when it comes to head impact on the bonnet.
@@matthewfe6671 Its the pr answer. But statistically the increase in car sizes like this has caused a large increase in pedestrian deaths regardless of what safety features they claim
@@matthewfe6671It is not. It's not about what's inside the hood, but the height of it and the grill. It pushes a pedestrian forward, instead of laying them of top of the hood. A decrease in 10cm of hood height would save over 500 lives a year in the US.
This has a target market, and it is certainly not Europe
Well it’s an *American* vehicle made by Americans so my first guess is it’s targeting the American market where it’s ICE twin has been the segment leader for years.

and everybody is gonna be safe because they big ass 4 tonne suvs cant be dangerous!
I've seen volvos analysis of EV xc40 vs ICE xc40 is about 25000 miles for break even in europe, but this even compared to a v8 escalade has to be wayyy higher before it breaks even. Guess the only thing it helps is local air quaility.

@@Delta_SierraCompared to a similar car with similar power its probably better than ICE by the same percentages. But yes, compare an economy ICE vehicle and this and the results may be quite interesting. I would love to know for sure.
In the meantime, in the streets in major cities in Europe, climate activists are flattening tires of current gasoline & hybrid SUV's merely weighing 2.5ton max because "too dangerous, too big and too bad for the planet". I'm talking about BMW X5 and smaller SUV's and they don't care whether you are one guy driving it to the supermarket or you need the SUV for your work. You could say that all luxury vehicles are more than what most people need
Pretty much. By definition, literally nobody *needs* a luxury anything. The literal entire point of luxury is to be something above and beyond in some fashion, be that design, features, quality or whatever else.
Hardly anyone gets the bare minimum.
I understand the concern about the weight, but there have been enormous civilian trucks like modern Rams and Silverados that aren't much smaller than this. Millions of them in fact. The F series is the best selling VEHICLE in the US. I really don't know what you expect the guy to say when this is barely different in hood height from a good portion of vehicles already on American roads. Its probably lower than some.
Yep. My new '24 GMC HD pickup is an astounding 8400lbs, and it's not electric! It's also not the heaviest of the GMC HD pickups either.
There is a study gaining enormous interest in urbanism and cycling advocacy groups showing a connection between pedestrian deaths and hood height. It's a result gained through statistical analysis. How it fits into wider reality is something else. OTOH, the WSJ has a recent-ish article with pictures of a young family and their 1958 Buick. I look at the picture of their young boy in relation to that car's beltline and hoodline and see that many of today's people know nothing. Recent pictures concerning SUVs' front over risks are just that. Maybe we just need to put front crosstraffic cameras on new vehicles. Or maybe we need to behave like it's 1958.
Well those aren't safe either.
@@markcoopers1930 That's half my point. There's no reason to single out this Escalade for being large, acting as if it's a novel idea to sell an enormous truck to normal people

GM nailed this car. As for safety... a 14yo girl vs any car is a bad day. Also, this car will spend most of its time on the highway where people are not walking. You may see a lot of these in NYC as limos, but the car certainly has front collision stopping.
I also think the bonnet is ridiculous on this. Not only for its height, but also completely unnecessary length. Makes it much harder to comprehend the size of the vehicle and see the corners while driving.
Wow! So you got a chance to drive it? When I saw it in person it looked about the same size as a Range Rover LWB
It looks like there are cameras all around it, I saw some next to the front wheels. Maybe they are for sensors too, but probably help in 360 view. However, I agree the hood is enormous, as all recent American trucks and full size SUV's. They all have this blunt nose style that's actually increased pedestrian injuries and fatalities since 2009 by more than half.
Far as I can tell, there is no rule in U.S. about hood height (or hardly any standard) or maybe vehicles over a certain weight are exempt; that is more likely the reason. Pedestrians be dammed I guess. The look of the front of the vehicle is more important in this case.. Take a look at a late 90's SUV's or trucks, and there is a huge difference in height, pedestrians at least had a chance back then..

We don't have pedestrian crash safety testing in the US. We have some sensor requirements, but that's it.
They crash test for pedestrians in Europe, Australia and Japan. Which is why these vehicles either aren't sold there or are only sold to special license holders. For most of Europe the largest personal truck Ford sells is the ranger.
The head designer danced around the issue of weight. When a 4 tonnes vehicles side swipes / plows into a 1.2 tonnes vehicle, a VW Golf as examples, it is going to be carnages. Mass equals potential energy. It is physics and that mass plus momentum is going to cause absolute havoc when in an accident. That said. I do like the design looks of this vehicle.

It's a beautiful vehicle. Stunning. All recent Escalades are quite nice. Though GM's engineering leaves a lot of doubt. If you must have a massive 210kWh battery, how good could the engineering be? A Tesla Model X battery is only 92kWh and still offers three rows.
The Tesla model x also has considerably less range compared to this .....and any current or future EV's will continue to be much heavier cars compared to similar or identical ICE version vehicles.
But it’s about miles per Kw/hr. This’ll do about 1.5. Tesla’s do about 4.
If electric is about climate, efficiency is important. If however, excess is the goal ☑️
Tell us you don't understand cars in America without telling us you don't understand cars in America...
Common sense is the same everywhere, but some people lack it.
Cars in America are dumb
Those rear screen should mimic the ones found on the Celestiq.
1 out of every 3 luxury SUV sold in America is an Escalade. Cadillac Escalade is 33% of the luxury SUV market.
I get what he's saying about safety, but realistically most of these will be sold in the US where full sized trucks are everywhere. It's big but nothing new to Americans.
European reviewers have been making hay about the size of US vehicles for as long as I can remember. Clarkson was doing it in the 90's...
European car companies have made billions selling oversized luxury vehicles for decades! If I am going to shell out six figures for a vehicle, It damn well better offend these pompous hypocrites!
NHTSA study put the Silverado at #1 for vehicles involved in the most deadly crashes in America, followed closely by the Ford f-150. The Ford Explorer, f-250, and Ram1500 also made the list.
Studies by independent insurance companies will consistently bump up pickup trucks as the top 20 deadliest as well. And it's not always pedestrian or other vehicle safety, rolling over these vehicles is very easy compared to a Honda Civic, and there have been failures as recently as 2020 for many of their roofs to support the weight of the vehicle as required.
And finally, A 2023 IIHS study found that vehicles that are tall and blunt, such as a large pickup or SUV, are 43.6% more likely to cause death in a collision with a pedestrian. But they figured this out in Europe in the 80's, which is why they actually have pedestrian crash standards there, while we don't.
Journalist is speaking about pedestrian safety, and he speaking about storage space... 😂 Whatever gets hit with this car, it's dead, doesn't matter, pedestrian or any other car...
All cars on the road should have size and weight restrictions, this thing should not exist..
An interesting perspective, as an American, especially in the south we are all used to seeing more Trucks and SUVs on the road opposed to compact cars and sedans
Sure it has to pass the same safety tests, but given its front profile and weight it is statistically much more dangerous to pedestrians, cyclists and other cars on the road. The crash stats and test results have shown that for over a decade. Al simply didn't answer Ollie's excellent question but tried to change the subject in a blatantly irresponsible move.
This is the most American way to do an electric car and I absolutely love it
😍 Love it❤
10:00 this hit the nail on the head. this is why Euro's can't grasp why they'd ever be necessary not just in the US but ANYWHERE in the world. Aussies aren't far behind with this thinking either, but for virtually anyone in the US, it's all about bigger is better. at 4103kg (9045 bald eagles) it comes dangerously close to needing a heavy vehicle registration on Aussie roads. but the yanks certainly feel a need to have them, even if they're ultimately super-sized grocery-getters.
Don't get the faux sense of surprise. You drove around in the previous escalade and anyone who's spent 5mins near US roads knows the vehicles are large. The size won't feel like that big on a US road which is the market it's for. No shit a golf would look small next to it. But a golf looks small next to an F Truck or Ram too.
Respect for addressing the size and safety head-on. Although things like the Hummer, Cybertruck and most other massive EVs aren't any different. Also, think about the roads! Taxes are only going to go up the more pot holes we need to repair
Except they don't fix the roads right either.... Constantly just hire the lowest bidding contractor who puts a lazy patch at the last second. Still goes over budget and over time.
A bit a break from the looking large traditional Escalade but one is ok and love it. Just hope the phev or traditional version next gen look different. A very modern futuristic look of the current gen

They learnt nothing 😂
Does the back wheels turn when taking corners?
