I saw the Matra with Jacques Laffite at the Long Beach Grand Prix in 1976. We were stationed at the end of the long back straight, just at the braking point. The sound was otherworldly. All the Cosworth powered cars would come by sounding like, well, Coswworth V8's. Deep throaty rumble. Next came the flat 12 Ferraris. Beautiful, smooth, sounded like a well oiled sewing machine. And then, the Matras! An absolutely ear splitting banshee howl you could ear the full length of the straight. I literally laughed out loud every time they went by! Tingles up the spine! I will never forget that sound, and I have never heard anything its equal since!
I had the privilege of hearing the Matra V12 in the 70s at Watkins Glen. I'm sure I lost some of my hearing to that motor and it was worth it. If only F1 sounded like that again !
He makes it look easy and fun. At one point in the top revs the engine seem to turn one bank backwards creating that beautiful metallic high pitch friction noise. Like a wheel or prop going so fast it looks as if turning very slowly. Or a Fender DeLuxe on full gain with steaming tubes. J.L. was such a funny man and superb driver. The car extremely beautiful. The Ligier effort fantastic. Merci beaucoup 😊

They sounded so much better than today's car and I love the non-existent safety regulations at the start with everyone hanging off the yellow sign lol.
The sign, I believe from everything I've ever read about Monza, is located off of the track premises. I saw the fans do the same thing to a Pepsi billboard and the description stated that it wasn't within the boundaries of the track. So while the race organizers probably (maybe?) would have prohibited it, it was then up to the local police to enforce any safety measures regarding the climbing of signs. And in all seriousness, they were probably fans too, and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if one or 2 of those people worked for the police dept. That's Monza, baby
