Mate is a fork of Gnome 2 and that is the reason it looks old style. This was the look of many early Linux distro's including the original version of Ubuntu. There was a lot of upset when Gnome stopped Gnome 2 in favour of Gnome 3 so Mate was the result.
This looks like another good DE option for pure Arch users. The configuration options look very similar to Xfce I wonder if it's more lightweight? also interested to know how the Wayland session is working on this release. A good introduction to this DE though thanks. On a side note I'm always open to changing my applications if I find one that has some advantages or the one I'm using gets bloated, introduces telemetry or changes something I dislike. I also like to know it's still actively being worked on and updated with Arch so It doesn't break my system.
You're welcome! Thanks for the positive feedback, I appreciate it. I think Xfce uses about the same RAM as Mate. They are both similar, lightweight, and older looking desktops. I don't think Mate is Wayland compatible, but I'm not sure. Mate was last updated in September. Xfce was updated today, but Arch hasn't posted the update. The thing that's nice about Mate and Xfce is the updates are bug fixes. The updates don't change the desktop and things don't break.
It's a Uhuru UM-900. Looks like it's no longer available. I only paid 54 dollars. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it because I didn't know if I would stick at making videos. Now it's over two years, but I never upgraded.
Will always love the Mate look
Thanks for your thoughts.
