Something I like to tell people that have a hard time understanding just how hard this level is, is that Braden is one of the best Mario Maker players out there. He's not a nobody who took 7 years on a level. This is a level that took an extremely skilled player, who got relatively lucky, 7 years and over 4000 hours.
@@Deathranger999 When I mention luck in reference to a skill-based grind, I'm talking about how good his performance was in comparison to how it was likely to go. After he had buffed the final shell setup in the level, he never died to it in a run even though he was very likely to die there multiple times, setting him back potentially years from the clear. The fact that Braden was able to clear the level at the difficulty it held in 7 years rather than 10+ is essentially him lucking out. When a level is that difficult, you can't just clear it based on your skill alone and in many ways it becomes a waiting game except you actually have to dedicate your involvement to it, and Braden was very likely to have waited much longer than he actually did.
@@nikkithefoxunderscore IDK, when it comes to this kind of time scale I’m not sure if I agree with you that getting it when he did was luck. Could it have taken longer? Yeah, absolutely, but I still wouldn’t consider it lucky that he got it when he did. Given that he got to the end section multiple times before beating it, would you not consider that to be a little bit unlucky? Any one of those could’ve been successful. It goes both ways. And WRT the changed shell section, if that’s a section he had failed on a lot before (or perhaps even if not), I’m sure he practiced it a lot in isolation before attempts. But my main point is that it’s easy to look at this and say “if one little thing had gone wrong, he wouldn’t have beat it on this attempt.” It’s less easy to look at his thousands of previous attempts and say “hey, maybe if something had gone a little more right, he would’ve beaten it then.” Luck and unluck. This dude took the length from my 20-27 years of life to do this. I have nothing but admiration and respect for this person and their dedication. Speedrunners are absolutely amazing, congrats!😤🙂
Unpopular opinion: The MAKING of this level is more impressive. The fact that this guy not only beat this level, but set the whole thing up with perfect timing, added more to it as he went along with increasingly complex contraptions, and some how worked through Mario Makers goofy limitations is unfathomable. I could not BEGIN to think how long it would would take to make something like this.
Depends on how you look at it, there are many points supporting both sides of the argument (Making Vs Playing) but the main thing I see is that while making a level, you can quickly and easily make revisions but when playing a level, it takes hours to even master or realize when something is impossible.
@PineapplethePine I havmt watched him but knowing MM he probably made this whole thing in sections, probably had multiple level “saves” that were just sections and when he had successfully made another room of hell he’d go into the master level and add it block by block in a way that works into the previous section. At the start he wouldn’t even have to do that because he could take a chunk of the subworld to make his rooms/setups then just copy and paste move them to where they need to go. If he’s even slightly sane (which at this point I won’t take for granted lol) he also had areas saved or portions where he could place Mario without breaking g the timing so he could practice each part of the level on it’s own
braden actually inspired me when I played Mario maker 1 in middle school to make levels that are more compact with difficult segments to save room for more shit. this level being part of that
For an insanely hard level, this level at times looks surprisingly open but that just adds to the difficulty, especially for players discovering the route and inputs
Ya I play a lot of Mario Maker. Open levels are even harder to beat as it’s not obvious what to do and you can’t use the walls to guide your movement. This level, everything has to be perfect.
The reason it's open isn't to make it harder to figure out. It's just because Braden runs out of part limits by spamming a bunch of entities everywhere, and it also consumes more time, which helps with Braden's goal of making the level use the full timer.
I remember watching chomp so long ago doing this, I stopped watching years ago and am shocked to hear that now he only finished this. That's so impressive I'm happy for him.
How is it impressive? He made the level and spent his 20’s beating it to prove random people on the internet wrong… feel like most people woulda beaten it under 7 years and 4000+ hours.. he probably looks back at it and regrets doing it or he will at some point..
I can't even go 8 minutes without making a mistake in everyday normal life, let alone in this intense digital Rube Goldberg machine of death. Braden is truly a god amongst men
I still remember when the song Xepher was released on DDR Supernova. That was many years ago. Fun song to play. Not sure what the 2nd song that plays is.
@@KingBoo97 I'm not known at all for anything so i can't be forgotten if I'm never known to start with but nice try with that "comeback" 😂 no one remembers these people 😂 i love speed runs i can tell you the times for my favorite games but i always forget the name of who ever did it lol

Frankly, I can't help but also be impressed at the creativity of the level itself. Pretty much nothing goes unused, and it does so many unique setups that are just so creatively put together.
Yo! I've been a part of the mario maker kaizo community for about 6 years, so I'd like to give my own insight on this: First of all, it is so awesome that you decided to make a video on this, everyone agrees that it did not blow up on twitter as much as it should have, so it's really awesome that you brought attention to a much bigger audience It's hard to overstate just how unbelievable trials of death is, to put into perspective, the vast majority of hard level uploads take less than 100 hours to upload, occasionally there will be a couple hundred hour grind for the absolute hardest of the hardest levels, so when we compare braden's trials of death, which took like 4300 hours, it's a huge outlier, that's because it truly is, far and away the hardest level in mario maker, undisputed, in just about every way, the individual tricks in the level are actually somewhat tame, but the obstacles he put around everything makes it all so insanely precise and much less tame and as you mentioned many times, require near perfect timing for a lot of things this level truly is an absolute marathon of perfection until the very end, this level is a bit over 8 minutes in-game time, to put this into perspective, most of the hardest levels range from about 30 seconds, to about 90 seconds, some of the absolute hardest long levels might surpass 4 minutes, so 8 minutes is once again a huge outlier, because it is very hard to make extremely hard levels that long, you only get 100 sprites (that is, stuff like boos, shells, springs, saws, fire balls, etc) in the overworld, and 100 in the subworld, this should also hopefully show just how masterful trials of death is as a creation Also, the end of the video where he clowned on snaggy, snaggy is pretty well known from 2017-2018 where he was one of the most annoyingly rude people I personally have ever known in the maker community, so it's really satisfying to see him put on blast at the end I would like to let it be known that there is actually 1 player who has been eyeing this level down for years, his name is KingBoo, and he is undoubtedly good enough to beat the level, so good luck to him! Lastly, everyone please follow ChainChompBraden on twitch, and watch his video on trials of death, this video doesn't quite do the video justice, it's a 40 minutes long adventure throughout the last 7 years of this level
I've only put time into Doom and Mario 64 speedrunning, so seeing the top level runners do it gives a whole new level of appreciation when you tried it yourself and see how much faster and more precise those people are. So it is truly hard to convey how hard multiple, frame-perfect input with chained jumps in complex setups really is. And that over a level that long.
I couldn't imagine doing this, me and my dad once played through all of halo 3 on the highest difficulty. The last mission alone took 3-4 hours of constantly restarting and trying again which me and him were so pissed we never wanted to play the game again (eventually we would come back). Taking 7 years to do one level would kill me.
As someone who is on youtube alot and finds it hard to find videos to watch often, it's nice knowing that there will be at least one of your videos on the site for me to watch! Thanks for everything charlie

Seeing him do that triple P-switch jump sent me, dude. Panga fans know how bad triple shell jumps are, but triple P-Switch jumps on the new physics are NUTS
it's not even just the skill to pull it off that's impressive , it's also the creativity involved to make such a complex and interesting level that's also so insanely difficult. truly one of the most insane moments in gaming.
This is just one of the craziest things achieved , he actually inspired me to make a really hard Mario Maker 2 Level. I can’t stop watching his video he posted about it, it’s so good!
I've watched a lot of Mario Maker over the last decade, and this is absolutely mind-blowing. The sheer amount of precise inputs and frame-perfect timings are off the charts. Props to Braden for having such dedication!
I know right, sure its just a video game level and not super important. but its more so the principle of never giving up which is the most amazing thing
I do agree though that he could have literally done pretty much anything else and had a bigger achievement. Like imagine spending all this time making music, or coding, or practicing a sport.
Its a cream dream. I've never seen anyone be SOO good at anything close to this. It may be the single most impressive feat ever witness in digital era. Not being vitriolic
I'd be amazed if it was a tas playthrough. Jesus Christy. Alive or dead, past present, through whole world, has anything as impressive since digital age dawned, think carefully, has anyone come close to such a feat? Skill at speed and required perfect play...best thing ever, if it's real. But again, I'd respect a tas at this point.
@@KingBoo97 did you ever get to try the level when you visited braden or did those plans fall through? I think you might get to pull it off with enough time and dont really have many people to race against aside fritzef maybe lol
I'm more impressed by the amount of footage we'll likely never see of failure, after failure, after failure, after failure ad nauseum, and this person still doesn't care, they're gonna finish this no matter what. I applaud the perseverance.
something to note too since i dont see much people mentioning it. there's a time limit for the level in the top right and it's pretty strict, meaning that if he wasted even a couple seconds he would've died by time limit. absolutely amazing
I’m so happy to finally see Braden released from Trials of Death… witnessing two Nai (Final jump) attempts live, and two fails, and watching on and off for over 3 years… GG. You absolute madman, CCB
I only saw a clip of him beating it not the whole level. That is insane, I strive to have that sort of dedication towards something respect to him for beating it.
this is honest to god is one of the most incredible feats man has ever accomplished, i am astounded and need to watch braden’s full vid but goddamn. i did feel overwhelmed with emotion when he completed the level, if i was there as a chatter i could see myself bawling from excitement
Never commented on critikal's videos before. But I felt like this one time it is worth it just to congratulate Braden. You did something practically no one could pull of. And having not known about this before and seeing it now being completed. Want you to know that proud of you for sticking to it and having no regrets. I hope you take a good vacation, and just bask in your accomplishment. You deserve every bit of it
The more difficult a challenge, the more rewarding it is when you reach your goal. That's one tough level and this is seriously impressive, the time this took is unbelievable
7 years? I've played games where I got stuck on a level and never played the game again. The absolute determination and willpower it must've took is insane.
Thank God you were here to pause the run and provide such expert analysis as "he needs to avoid all of this hitting him" and "your timing needs to be perfect" because honestly I'd be lost without that kind of insight. You're the right man for the job, Charlie. In every circumstance.
I can't wait to hear from Charlie later on that "King Boo" beat this level, and he'll have done it without sacrificing 7 years of his life, and won't have held onto random doubt comments because they hurt his feelings.
@@ultimatehope549 theres probably also a universe where you can beat this also your grandma wouldnt even be able to physically execute plenty of those inputs
Braden might just be one of the biggest inspirations in not only the gaming community, but the entire world in general. He went through hell and back to get to this point- 7 long years. Congrats, Braden!
This is literally called peak human performance we need Sport Science on something like this to break it down. I would give up after a week at most I don't think I could even play a few days.
@@pavleperisic-spasic1148 I wish I had this type of dedication when I'm stuck on 1 level at most I'll play like 1 hour than probably take a break lol. All my respect it takes a different type of mind set to want to attempt these types of levels and more complete it. 👌
@@pavleperisic-spasic1148 Lol, delusional to actually believe what you just wrote. The time someone spends on something is not really the best indicator on how hard that is, unless they are all at the same skill level at their own thing. And Braden is one of the best Mario Maker players.

That's also a straight up incorrect opinion. Beating the level is 1,000x harder than making it.
Depends on how you look at it, there are many points supporting both sides of the argument (Making Vs Playing) but the main thing I see is that while making a level, you can quickly and easily make revisions but when playing a level, it takes hours to even master or realize when something is impossible.
probably like 50-200 hours (extremely rough estimate) of making the level and like 4k hours to beat it
@PineapplethePine I havmt watched him but knowing MM he probably made this whole thing in sections, probably had multiple level “saves” that were just sections and when he had successfully made another room of hell he’d go into the master level and add it block by block in a way that works into the previous section. At the start he wouldn’t even have to do that because he could take a chunk of the subworld to make his rooms/setups then just copy and paste move them to where they need to go. If he’s even slightly sane (which at this point I won’t take for granted lol) he also had areas saved or portions where he could place Mario without breaking g the timing so he could practice each part of the level on it’s own
As someone who used play kaizo, no.
braden actually inspired me when I played Mario maker 1 in middle school to make levels that are more compact with difficult segments to save room for more shit. this level being part of that
Braden is like the one punch man of Mario maker, anytime he did well he pushed himself more and became stronger
i see you
Braden is now so powerful nothing possibly poses a challenge anymore. Gaming is meaningless. Braden is god.
Yeah if instead of one punch, he poked the enemy for 7 years only to realize he created that which he has been poking for 7 years…
I wouldn’t call failing for 7 years ‘he did well’
@@BulletC12 I mean it was said in the video that he would make it harder if it seemed easier.
For an insanely hard level, this level at times looks surprisingly open but that just adds to the difficulty, especially for players discovering the route and inputs
yeah, i think it would be even harder for someone else to beat it, since they don't have the knowledge Braden does being the creator of the level.
This is the Mario maker equivalent of an artist working on one price of artwork for years
I remember watching chomp so long ago doing this, I stopped watching years ago and am shocked to hear that now he only finished this. That's so impressive I'm happy for him.
Sure buddy
How is it impressive? He made the level and spent his 20’s beating it to prove random people on the internet wrong… feel like most people woulda beaten it under 7 years and 4000+ hours.. he probably looks back at it and regrets doing it or he will at some point..

Yo! I've been a part of the mario maker kaizo community for about 6 years, so I'd like to give my own insight on this:
First of all, it is so awesome that you decided to make a video on this, everyone agrees that it did not blow up on twitter as much as it should have, so it's really awesome that you brought attention to a much bigger audience
It's hard to overstate just how unbelievable trials of death is, to put into perspective, the vast majority of hard level uploads take less than 100 hours to upload, occasionally there will be a couple hundred hour grind for the absolute hardest of the hardest levels, so when we compare braden's trials of death, which took like 4300 hours, it's a huge outlier, that's because it truly is, far and away the hardest level in mario maker, undisputed, in just about every way, the individual tricks in the level are actually somewhat tame, but the obstacles he put around everything makes it all so insanely precise and much less tame and as you mentioned many times, require near perfect timing for a lot of things
this level truly is an absolute marathon of perfection until the very end, this level is a bit over 8 minutes in-game time, to put this into perspective, most of the hardest levels range from about 30 seconds, to about 90 seconds, some of the absolute hardest long levels might surpass 4 minutes, so 8 minutes is once again a huge outlier, because it is very hard to make extremely hard levels that long, you only get 100 sprites (that is, stuff like boos, shells, springs, saws, fire balls, etc) in the overworld, and 100 in the subworld, this should also hopefully show just how masterful trials of death is as a creation
Also, the end of the video where he clowned on snaggy, snaggy is pretty well known from 2017-2018 where he was one of the most annoyingly rude people I personally have ever known in the maker community, so it's really satisfying to see him put on blast at the end
I would like to let it be known that there is actually 1 player who has been eyeing this level down for years, his name is KingBoo, and he is undoubtedly good enough to beat the level, so good luck to him!
Lastly, everyone please follow ChainChompBraden on twitch, and watch his video on trials of death, this video doesn't quite do the video justice, it's a 40 minutes long adventure throughout the last 7 years of this level
Thanks for the extra background. =)
Thanks for providing us with more details. Appreciate it!
