My theory: There must be a farm or greenhouse somewhere on the ship producing food and also oxygen for the ship. The humans wouldn't know about it, since the robots run everything. Dead bodies and feces would be used as fertilizer.
Because it shows that the earth is capable of sustaining life again or at least coming close. I swear, it's like matpat didn't even bother watching the movie...
Well, there are a few things that were completely left out, so most likely the food comes from plants. 1. You still need to create Oxygen. Of course they could create Oxygen with water, but they would still need to deal with the hydrogen. Also they need to deal with the CO2 create by the humans. So either they just dump it out into space, leaving solid junks of CO2 floating trough space, or they have plants that use the CO2 to create Oxygen. 2. The calories don't just create themselves. A human uses calories just by existing. So with every "cycle" of a human dying, getting turned into food and than getting eaten until the consumer dies you will loose quite a lot of calories. If we say that the humans are mostly inactive and are actually gaining weight we can go with an average intake of 2.500 calories a day per human (The average daily consumption over the whole life). With a lifespan of up to 200 years like said we can go with 150 years. So every human on board would need around 109.500.000 calories trough their whole life. This would mean that to feed one human they would need around 1.368 dead humans (going from 80.000 calories per human). So if we simplify this very much and say the food lastet the first generation of humans until their death and second generation also consists of exactly 600.000 humans than the third generation could only be around 438 humans. So unless there is a human slaughterhouse on the ship that kills a lot of humans before their natural lifespan it is most likely that the dead body's are used as fertilizer to grow plants.
Yeah there's prolly some sort of mechanized process, probably just direct chemical food printing technology. In all likelihood they chemically digest all organic waste, using the nuclear energy to convert it to food. For all we know they have a bacterial biome engineered entirely for this purpose. What doesn't make sense is if you could do this, you could optimize food for human health, or even genetically alter humans to singularly enjoy a healthy diet
While everyone is taking a staunch stand against this theory, I'm just going to point out the funny irony at the beginning... Potassium Benzoate is a food preservative, yes, and it's found in Diet Coke. Guess who's addicted to Diet Coke.
@@mickeyd2034 What about them? Even if the passengers had the same lifespan that's still a lot of dead bodies. And, that means the need even more food for people because they are living so long.
Also I realised, Wall-E was looking down on the Milky Way in one of the scenes, which means they left the galaxy after 700 years. That’s pretty advanced, so why didn’t they just go to the closest habitat planet, Proxima B which is only 4.2 light years away.

Conservation of energy kind of mandates that they have a way of converting electric energy into calories. If they survived only through cannibalism, they would need to eat over 7000 people per day. Then you need more people to feed the extra people, and all told it's more people than atoms in the Universe.
@@ajh3461 Thank you I didnt wanted to write a long comment about the energy loss in the chemical reactions, this would be an perpetum mobile hes talking about
So, MatPat could be right with this whole analysis and theory about food regeneration and cannibalism or, Disney could have just pulled a "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs" and straight up turned water into food.........
Well, you do have a good point with that there. If they're in the 28th century, then scientists must have found a way of artificially creating the chemical bonds in calories, carbohydrates, etc and such that you'd find in your food.
There are 2 points I found when researching this topic. 1: If the captain has only ever seen pizza once, then how does he know it tastes good? 2: On the breakfast signs, why do they show solid foods instead of the foods they put in the movie? It wouldn't make sense.

The captain doesn’t even know how the controls of the ship work, so it wouldn’t be that crazy to assume that he doesn’t remember that there are farms or animals on board as those are tasks that could be taken care of by the robots. as for the reason there’s no elderly people it’s not beyond the Relm of possibility that they have some kind of retirement home.
In Wall-E, when the captain wakes up and realizes that it's lunch time, then changes the time to morning, he checks all of the systems. one of these systems include a regenerative buffet. The captain asks about it, and auto tells him that it's clear. That means there's a regenerative buffet that "regenerates food" for a spaceship that they planned would last more than 5 years. In the movie, there's a video where the person on the video talks to auto saying that if life is found on Earth, he should send it away and prevent the humans from returning to Earth. This means that BnL planned for the spaceship would last for far more than 5 years. Therefore, the people aren't eating the dead people of the past. also how do the people make babies if they're always sitting

Theory debunked. Half the population would have to die every day to supply enough food for the people to be that fat. They can't keep that up for 695 years. See my theory ruin comment for details.
@@imperfect_ten ahem no the humans need about 2500-3000 calories everyday to gain weight and even 5000 to get that fat and the people should fit 100k or more calories which would mean that one in 20 people would have to die and in real life 4 people are born in a second 2 die so there would be so many bodies over they couldnt even eat
@@arttuvarinen3022 Sure, but still, think about it. At the time we see them they are super fat. No one even communicates face to face, so how are babies even being made in the first place? How do kids exist in this? What's most plausible is that just like the captain said in the movie, there is a regenerative food buffet and since they have a regenerator device why couldn't they regenerate people?
@@imperfect_ten Let me debunk you instead. Ever heard of test-tube babies? And second, the people on the Axium doesn't use as many calories as regular people since they are lazy as f (now). Consider this theory: Most passengers start out as healthy, normal people on a casual flight with all their essentials taken care of. However as time goes on and supplies diminish, Otto begins changing their diet and reducing the otherwise healthy food with junk that can still sustain them, but not energise them hence their slow descend to laziness. The less they exercise, the fatter they become since the calories they consume aren't just unhealthy in the first place, it also has no means of being burnt off. Every generation it gets worse, little by little as shown by the captain's portraits. Sure, advanced medical technology kept them alive and free from most illnesses but whatever lifespan they have are spent lounging around. But they die eventually, each dead body begins containing more and more empty calories which Otto sees as a waste of recyclable resources. At this point, real food is pretty much gone, no matter how much Otto skimps or changes their dietary intake, he knew he had to find some way to keep the humans on board alive and away from earth, thus leading to Mat's theory.
@@DemBigOlEyes First of all, the robot's name is Auto. Not Otto. Just clarifying. Second, if they have enough space for that many test tubes, why not have farms too? There were TONS of Axioms that took off in the first place, (as seen in the ads for the Axioms near the beginning of the movie) why not devote one to farms? However, there is the issue of there's only one left at the time the movie takes place, but they could have easily taken apart some of the other Axioms for parts for the cloning machine/regenerative food buffet that the captain said about. And if they can generate babies, it's pretty safe to assume that with their tech they can generate food anyway. And, closing question, let me ask you this. How does MatPat's theory say that it will FLAVOR the human meat? Flavoring takes materials.
An interesting note. If they're in the kupier belt, that's full of comets and condratic asteroids. Basically literally tons of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. CHON makes up all the building blocks for food. With some basic food synthesis, you've got all the foods you'd ever need
that makes lots of sense, especially when you consider that they're an advanced society with technology we can only dream of. Maybe they mix chemicals and proteins together to make the cupcakes in a cup.
Actually, clips in the movie show walle taking parts from his dead counterparts and using them as spare parts. He used another walle robots eye lenses to replace his.
The Commenter one of them being... If Wall-E is a cannibal what does him eating humans have to do with that? He's a robot so eating a human isn't cannibalism lol
You know I've always wondered...where are the rest of the humans? In the beginning we see that more than one Axiom-like ship leave Earrh...we also see in the A113 clip that the BnL president says "Let's get the heck out of here" implying he and the humans who stayed behind left as well...so where did they go? Are they still out in space?
Pretty sure that is in the film in a way. I remember there's a scene where one of Wall-e's tracks is a little worn out and he finds a defunct model and then the very next scene both of his tracks are in perfect condition.
@@AxisChurchDevotee no no, i get that. But why would that be a theory? Cmon, these potato sacks must crave eating something else than cupcake in a cup 😁
I think it was the fact that potassium benzoate was PAIRED with human flesh, because he was talking about it and then saw the flesh thing. Its probably harmless
I can see them using corpses as the base for a compost, but a canabalistic food stuff would be unsustainable. they'd run out of food in less than 2 years.
The conservation of energy means that if your having humans diffusing usable energy as humans do, you have to imput usable energy in the food supply. This is only possible with chemosynthisis, photosynthesis, or some equivalent process. Sure, you could use human waste and dead humans to help grow crops, but some sort of organic processing via a producer, or perhaps an electronic means of reducing chemical agents is nessasary. If you change human flesh enough for it to be a viable foodstuff, it's more rational to classify it as composting.
Around ten people would die per day. Since they likely do multiple dumps of trash a day, it's fair to approximate 1 or 2 corpses per dump. Since the cubes are huge, and we only see a portion of their surface, it's very unlikely we'd see the corspe. Also, there's no guarantee there's not a star trek 2 type launch bay for corspes somewhere on the enormous axiom that we only see a small part of. Also, it would be way more efficient to use bacteria or protists to produce chemicals from human waste that could be used as a food stuff. Or a genetically motified form of chicken cells that turn poop into chicken breasts. Or you could splice yeast and wheat to make a bread forming strain of protist. The list of ways crops could exist without plants or animals are pretty big.
my thoughts exactly, I very much doubt that they could have been able to survive on only human meat. which would mean that there is a farm somewhere on board. Even for 5 years worth of food I would prefer putting a farm on the ship than pure food if you are taking half a million people.
+VengfulDarkness true they cnat survive solely on human meat but also why do they have electrical trees around teh axiom "ELECTRICAL" if they have a farm why dont plant real trees
***** Ok here's some huge problems: 1. They are next to a massive cloud in space. Revealed to be a segment of the Kuiper belt. The kuiper belt is full of elements that can be chemically made into proteins, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and chelated minerals. 2. The amount of waste being cast out into space indicates that this is an open system. 3. The population would have a reducing return per lifetime given these starting numbers of people. If they were being recycled into food, then fed to each other, then that would mean that each body would have to be processed into lipids, carbohydrates, and so on. With the wasteful nature of the people, the population would be reduced by an 8th per generation. Given that this is 700 years past 0 year, that means that there would be less than 1000 people on the ship assuming a beginning population of 50,000 per ship (A low estimate) even then, the ship clearly had at least the same population if not more than the starting population. This means that the theory that people are recycled is increasingly unlikely. 4. The ships clearly have a warp system. This means that they have a fusion if not matter, anti-matter reaction systems. Which means that they can produce all the elements needed to include Iron, which is essential to long term diets. 5. The level of fat on each person indicates a caloric intake higher than 1200 calories per day (A more or less minimum for daily activity, though an argument can be made for 800 calories.) since they seem to have that caloric imbalance from an early age, this means that they receive at least twice the daily caloric intake. than they take in. 6. The caloric content of their meals (Based upon pictures of the food product, shakes, liquified versions of standard food) in at least 32 ounce cups, this means they are taking in at the very least 1800-2400 calories per day. 7. The waste seen in the scene where wall-e and eve wind up upon following the plant, suggests a massive infrastucture in which electronics, food, paper products, and so on are manufactured daily, which makes sense as the ship seems to have all the needed materials to manufacture and remain self sufficient. These are a few of the biggest problems. To me, their obesity, the food products they take in, and so on suggest that they have an outside food source. I'm reminded of replicators from Star Trek, which is technically possible, though requires automation to take base elements and turn them into sugars, carbohydrates, proteins, ammino acids, lipids, omega-3 fatty acids, and so on. Given that these can all be made in nature with no synthetic means required, it stands to reason that these can be replicated by machinery taking the base elements of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and a few other this and that elements (like iron) all of which are readily abundant in the Kuiper belt as ammonia, methane, water (ice) and so on.
Alternate theory: since MatPat even said that the capt was incompetent, maybe the robots automate a veggie farm, and the bodies, like Mat said, could’ve easily been burnt, therefore no cannibalism
The ashes could actually have been used to fertilize the soil, and with human feces that, btw, need to be expelled, and as MatPat pointed, there was no biomass in the big trash
@@randmstrnger176 That depends. Many veggies are not, but starchy vegetables, sweet or fatty fruits do have a lot of calories. For example potatoes, melons, berries, nuts, avocados, coconuts.
And only knowing that a human body contains about 100k calories doesn't mean much. For an average person a human body would give enough energy for about 50 days. For overweight people even less. 4 generations of people over 700 years can not be explained only by cannibalism, there must be some kind of food production on board.
Either you forgot that matpat said that human bodies are densely caloric, which explains the humans being overweight, not just because of their inactivity. Or you didnt watch the whole theory
if the people were recycling each other for food they would still run out of food before the movie. the people are still using energy via moving in there seats which is wasted in friction and a organism only give about 20% of its energy when eaten
Wait, if they’re cannibals eating meat from other humans, how do they get the vitamins necessary to survive that would normally come from vegetables, fruits, et cetera?
See, this entire theory was bullshit, but he could of totally used those other ships as a counter argument, since he could have said that they're eating the remains of the people on other ships, since you would need much more than just the Axiom's people's bodies..
well there are the possibility's that they went and colonized a different plant out side of the belt or ration wars or mutiny... there are many possibility's and a lot of it most likely won't be explained unless they center a sequel around it
One think matpat forgot, there are different flavors. My personal theory is there is a big garden on board that grows the banana and apples for the smoothies and the dead bodies and used as fertilizer for the plants (Edit: 1. Thanks for the likes ❤️ 2. I don’t wanna repeat arguments so just look in my reply’s for ur answer if it’s there 3. I know matpat made a new theory of this with more proofs of cannibalism which I will say, is convincing but that doesn’t mean this theory is debunked, it just makes his not debunked)
then what’s the point of them going to earth? Yeah sure a land to walk on, but they can just stay in the ship. It ruins the whole point of the operation. edit- just realized that the main plot of the story is to go to earth to live. Nevertheless using flesh as a fertilizer is very inefficient due to most compost heap volume contains leftover crop fibre that is not edible.
@@robertnussberger2028 But how are they made tho. Artificial flavoring uses a lot of different chemicals and still uses some natural foods to make them

Stupid question: The time on earth does not look as if 700 years have passed. There is still paper and garbage on the ground which would have been long gone. Could it be possible, due to changes in gravity, that the axiom experienced faster time?
If by changes in gravity you mean due to mass increasing with velocity, then yes. If you mean because the gravity on the Axiom was ostensibly lower than that of Earth's, then no because the mass of Earth isn't enough to significantly warp space-time.

Because it shows that the earth is capable of sustaining life again or at least coming close. I swear, it's like matpat didn't even bother watching the movie...
Robert Szasz But wouldn't any plant be able to get that done?

This is the first video I watched of MatPat, I will miss him.

3d printing?
If you mean that they would 3D print food from CHON then yeah, but if you mean “they could just 3D print food” then no.
that makes lots of sense, especially when you consider that they're an advanced society with technology we can only dream of. Maybe they mix chemicals and proteins together to make the cupcakes in a cup.

You forgot to mention no Slaughter House or that they were blinded by those screens, eitherway still makes the most sense.
Mysterious ways of doing my homework for you
my thoughts exactly, I very much doubt that they could have been able to survive on only human meat. which would mean that there is a farm somewhere on board.

***** Ok here's some huge problems:
The Bread Cat I understand
Alternate theory: since MatPat even said that the capt was incompetent, maybe the robots automate a veggie farm, and the bodies, like Mat said, could’ve easily been burnt, therefore no cannibalism
The ashes could actually have been used to fertilize the soil, and with human feces that, btw, need to be expelled, and as MatPat pointed, there was no biomass in the big trash
But wouldn’t that mean the people on board would just be frail? Not overweight
I mean, veggies and fruits are not that caloric are they?
In two days this will be 7 years old
i just realized that your channel is so interesting to watch while educational at the same time
You know what eles is interesting … his search history ..
@@unknownastroid_2240 whys that so true tho-
But Mat Pat, couldn't they just mine the moon for cheese?
No
Racist Santa lmao!!!
Racist Santa - I WANTS SOME CHEESE! LET'S GOOOOOO
Racist Santa lmao
Add the moon dimension in minecraft, sponges=cheese
Man gotta love the A113 refrence in the intro.
For people who don’t know A113 is the number of the storyboard room in Pixar
Yeah, there's an A113 joke in nearly every Pixar movie. Didn't know that was the name of a storyboard room
All movies have A113 also it said GT LIve
I thought it was a room at a university or something.
Lokomoqo from the movie, the shining! They always keep that reference, in. Every. Movie.
IM NOT ALONE! THANK ASTEROIDS!
if the people were recycling each other for food they would still run out of food before the movie. the people are still using energy via moving in there seats which is wasted in friction and a organism only give about 20% of its energy when eaten
Hi craft craft crafting table hi
Wait, if they’re cannibals eating meat from other humans, how do they get the vitamins necessary to survive that would normally come from vegetables, fruits, et cetera?
Technically you can get all your vitamins and nutrients from meat although you do have to eat every part of the body like kidneys, liver and bladder
Plus evolution
delicous food made by robot is smarter than our brain?
They could have used an invention simmilar to the one in cloudy with a chance of meatballs where it turns water into food
Organ meat has all the vitamins we need. That's how the Inuits/Eskimos survive in those cold places that cannot grow greens.
Here's a better question...
Where's the rest of the ships that were launched?
IJN asking the real questions
See, this entire theory was bullshit, but he could of totally used those other ships as a counter argument, since he could have said that they're eating the remains of the people on other ships, since you would need much more than just the Axiom's people's bodies..
IJN hs bs for reals
noooooooooo my fav movie walls how could u 😵😫😲😵😱😭😫😵😷😫 😭🙍😖😔😖
well there are the possibility's that they went and colonized a different plant out side of the belt or ration wars or mutiny... there are many possibility's and a lot of it most likely won't be explained unless they center a sequel around it
One think matpat forgot, there are different flavors.
But what about artificial flavors? This is the future, right?
@@robertnussberger2028 But how are they made tho. Artificial flavoring uses a lot of different chemicals and still uses some natural foods to make them
they got no plants so
@@astrokitty.404 that’s not true. The reason the plant was so important is because they saw that earth was once again inhabited by life. Also the captain or passengers don’t leave their chair to even monitor the garden as Auto does it for them
6:57: As a kid, I always imagined they pulled a Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and had a big ol machine like Flint Lockwood’s device to turn water into food, since it is WAAAYYY in the future.
Of course science would have a article saying how fattening we are if eaten cause cannibalism
Nicholas Postma it's sense
*An article
Paradraw Zombie I mean have u ever watched cloudy chance with meatballs they made food from water they could have did it that way but idk
She is rite
Hope Eikom *right
That’s is just a theory a film theory

@@purestriver where?
Stupid question: The time on earth does not look as if 700 years have passed. There is still paper and garbage on the ground which would have been long gone. Could it be possible, due to changes in gravity, that the axiom experienced faster time?
that makes some sense actually.
yeah, good thought, but there recources won't make it cause they are bound to the time they experience and not the earths time
I mean yea it’s possible
Maybe. I think Matpat discussed how space time is much different than Earth time. Think he explained it in his Rosalina video
If by changes in gravity you mean due to mass increasing with velocity, then yes. If you mean because the gravity on the Axiom was ostensibly lower than that of Earth's, then no because the mass of Earth isn't enough to significantly warp space-time.
That potassium benzoate is a whole other theory video.
