I discovered a new way of recording guitars

- This is a recording trick I discovered by accident a while back. It's basically just combining an overdriven guitar track with a fuzz guitar, in a classical "double tracking" setting. If you're afraid of using fuzz pedals for riffing, I hear you! But with this method, the results are quite impressive!

My secret sauce is having a mic on the guitar itself to get the pick noise/a little bit of the acoustic properties (works better with semi or fully hollow)!
I usually blend it in a little bit quieter than the rest and it adds a sense of intimacy (because it makes the listener feel like they’re in the room) and also makes things sound much wider
Cool! I've tried it a few times, and it's definitely a cool thing to do. Cheers
My biggest problem with instagram is everybody (even joe bonnamassa) uses the phone mic and i can hear the pick hitting the strings. I don’t like that sound at all
@@OttophilI think it depends on the genre/style really. I generally don’t do that for distorted tones or really anything I want to sound super electric.
Very cool use of fuzz!
I’ve been using fuzz for all kinds of stuff for the last 15 years. With a low Z input circuit it will provide the sweetest clean tones with guitar volume rolled down and the thickest low end compression when rolled back up. Fuzz is to me mostly about texture. Use it to clip your peaks straight off while remaining unity gain, for beautiful, croaking pseudo-cello melodic passages or use a heavily mid scooped fuzz to just fill out everything in the frequency range whilst leaving room for your vocals.
So many use cases!
So many ways to use one beyond just the dad rock solo time happy hour.
Actually been doing this method with my drum machine and actual mic'ed kit.The results with panning and EQ makes the drums pop big time.Keeping tempo is everything so be aware of that.
Neat!
This is a similar technique that David Gedge from The Wedding Present would use, except he would run two Marshall combo’s with two Yamaha Distortion pedals with one set to distort and the other as a boost, with one going in to one amp and the other going into the second combo. So not only do you get the stereo effect, but you get the grit and detail coming from the clean boost blended with the distorted amp which sounds huge and articulate. Check out their album Sea Monsters recorded by Steve Albini of Nirvana, Pixies fame.
Let me tell you, guy, that you are at the top of your game lately. Aesthetics and lighting, the fluid communication, the musicality, the oh-so-subtle (sometimes) humor... Heck, even the video duration.
+1 for the clapping and body humor :)
Thanks a lot, Filipe! Means a lot to hear that. Took some time to realize a video like this doesn't have to be 15 minutes. Again, thanks a lot for tuning in and for the kind feedback!
It's my pleasure. It's the least i could do.
I (and others) are on the receiving end of this "partnership" ('cos i mentioned everything except the content haha).
I wouldn't say I've ever been fussy about such rules, and I play big chords with a fuzz anyway. I've never heard anyone complaining about a lack of definition with fuzzes, but maybe that's me. I don't have strict rules, because half of them don't make any sense and it all depends on what you're working on. I also don't spend 1000 years on guitar forums, so I'm not precious about what my tone should be.
I agree completely. To my ear, fuzz frequently allows for note definition and distortion homogenizes chords into a single slab. I guess a lot of people feel the fact opposite, but that's how they've always sounded to me. Fuzz usually feels more "transparent" to my ears. Maybe it's just the type of fuzzes I use, I guess.
Great pointers, great tone, great riffs!
Nice riff and great advice. The riff has a FEEDER feel about it!
Congrats on 100K subscribers! I remember you making a push for that goal a couple years ago! Keep it up!
Thanks! Yeah, remembering I tried pushing up from 80K before Christmas in 2020. Little did I know it took over a year before it happened 😄
great video! super cool riffs and def gonna try out this technique
Thanks a lot Luka!
The hand claps were optional but that marching is mandatory!
Always interesting and informative.
eye opener! great idea! tnx for sharing!
My pleasure!
My "secret sauce" trick is to record one side on a bridge pickup while the other side on neck. Gives a similar feel, but definitely gonna try adding some fuzz too!
Somebody's having a bit of fun..... and I will be trying this technique soon!
My band does this for live shows, but we will def be trying this style of mixing next recording. Cheers!
I do something similar for bass. I'll have one signal path that is fairly clean with some of the highs rolled off, then another channel with some dirt. And I blend the two but instead of panning, I keep them together. I get clean low end that separates itself from some of the highs, but get the dirty sustain across the frequency spectrum.
nice!
That’s a great suggestion! I generally record by double tracking different levels of overdrive. It didn’t occur to me that putting fuzz on one of the tracks would make such a big difference. As you implied, I generally think of using fuzz only in special situations as it can get buried in the mix. BTW, I’ve noticed that Chris Cornell often has a clean guitar on one side and a distorted guitar on the other (e.g., Say Hello 2 Heaven), which similarly results in a big and interesting sound. I’ve been aware of that approach, but overdrive + fuzz is new to me. So thanks!!
That’s amazing , I will definitely try it 😊 thanks!
Have fun!
Sounds absolutely huge with the fuzz in. I'm going to start investing in fuzz and that Fenris is top of the list now What are you using for drums? Sounds like Jack White/Raconteurs mixed with QOTSA sounds 😀
Cheers! The Fenris is a must-have! I used the drums in Logic. Compressed the crap out of it and added some distortion.
Another great video 👍
Thank you!
Sounds freaking rad!
Thanks Sean!
This is how Remo Drive recorded the guitars on first albums ! This is SICK it makes a fuzzy-loose drive, lovely
Need to check them out then!
Great job on this mix! I would love for you to do a mix breakdown/tutorial on the track you made for this video!
Thanks! That's maybe a concept I could explore for my Patreon page, or something!
Perfect combination! An overdrive with fuzz. Usually I put just a boost pedal before fuzz. Arrows by EQD is my favourite! Amazing video!
Thanks!
You’re most welcome!
These are some cool riffs, not sure if they are your own or if they are from somewhere, but it sounds like a combo of qotsa, soundgarden, tame impala, and mastodon to me. Awesome video man!
I love your videos on the guitar tones of kyuss, qotsa, white stripes, tame impala…
I’m not sure if Electric Wizard and Sleep are bands you are into at all, but they both have very distinct signature tones and I would love to see your take on them!
I use this trick all the time when layering. I particularly love using a phaser and fuzz on a layer in one side to create a subtle psychedelic effect
Need to try. Thanks!
I wouldn't say it's a new way of recording - lots of good music has been made with different tones on each side - but here you've got a reliable method that works for you.
Playing the same part using different chord shapes is an old trick that works much better. Playing the same shapes sounds like Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound"...too much and overused.
YES! I've been experimenting with blending overdrive + fuzz for a few years now. My (not so secret) weapon: Old Blood Noise Endeavors Signal Blender.
Judging from the general EQ of the two dirts, I think I’ll try double tracking with my nice thick rat+fuzz face sound and use the gain channel of my classic 30 for the other side - I’ve always found it a little too bright on its own even though it sits really well in a mix at lower gain settings. Thanks!
That sounds like a solid plan. The dirt from the classic 30 is very good!
Killer tone! I usually love layering fuzz (big muff OP AMP) with heavily compressed guitars with a touch of CHORUSSS or even a light chorusy flange ala electric mistress. Also using an octave fuzz on one layer makes things really sound big.
Nice!
I’ve been playing the EQD Black Ash Fuzz (for the lows) and 1981 DRV (for the highs) in parallel live lately. It sounds massive and everything comes through.
Sounds like a br00tal mix, man!
If I’m using heavy fuzz or distortion on a guitar part, I like to split the signal into a second (usually smaller) amp set to a complimentary tone. For example, I’ll run a Big Muff-style fuzz into the OD channel of a Marshall JCM 900, then to fill out the midrange and maintain some clarity I’ll run a mid-focused clean boost (I’m a fan of the XTS Shapecharger and Effectrode Blue Bottle, but pedals like the Boss GE-7 or MXR 10-Band EQ also work) into my old Fender Bassman 20 or Traynor TS-25B. Those two amps in particular are great because they’re both capable of a nice, articulate drive sound and the 15” speakers give you a naturally punchy midrange with a solid attack (it helps that I’ve put guitar speakers in both, they’re Ted Webers but I forget the exact models).
I started doing this a couple of months ago and it's really effective! I haven't tried playing the fuzz part with a different guitar and amp though, I find the character is different enough from the overdriven sound that you can get away with using the same gear for both.
I've been interested in trying to set up a fuzz and OD in parallel on my board to see if a similar sound can be achieved live
Nice! Yeah, it's probably fine to use the same amp/guitar/speaker with this.
I was doing a song that had a short slow solo. I would run an eq pedal into a distortion pedal and I would do a take playing the solo with one slider on the eq maxed and the others turned down. I repeated this proccess with every single band and I would play the same notes of the solo on different strings so I had 7 tracks with the solo spanning 2 octaves. I then had one track in mono and panned the remaining tracks evenly hard left and hard right. It sounded massive obviously but if you were focusing on a specific frequency you could hear the "thinness" of it.
Very cool riffs 4:43 !!!
Is there a song with those anywhere??
Cheers
What i like to do, I play at bandpractice in stereo with two amps. One amp with overdrive, the other with a fuzz pedal. It makes a huge sonical difference incomparison with just the same guitar signal into both amps at the same time.
But I guess that's the point of your video anyway.
Cheers from Switzerland
Cheers Sven! I've never done it like that. Sounds like a clever idea. Need to try!
@@LivingroomGearDemos then for your power duo just get a 3rd small bass amp and a micropog running 100% low octave out to it. to really go crazy put your tuner in as a kill switch for the bass. Thought about starting one but it sounds like a lot to carry around lol
Great tip: very similar to how you get the Entombed sound or how a SansAmp works.
I've been doing something similar by using the stereo channels in the JC-40 (L/R inputs) and a signal splitter into either pedal. This idea came from using the parallel mode in the JB-2 to have one "sharp" sound and one "wooly" sound at the same time. Looking forward to using an LS-2 to blend fuzz and OD pedals together. I have been thinking about running a phaser into one of them or possibly a tremolo to get the "wall of sound" some movement.
cool!
Another trick is to record the back of the speaker cabinet on a seperate channel (works great on very bright amps) not so useful for heavy music but more chordal stuff. This is a somewhat common trick in LA with producers.
I love chords with numbers in it
Me too. Very complicated to play though
@@LivingroomGearDemos I find the chords with hashtags in even more difficult
Dig it. Great video
Thanks Tom!
2:49 the only way to record hand claps, a video on this alone is a must!
indeed, but what if I told you that those hand claps are programmed...? 😬
@@LivingroomGearDemos What is this sorcery!!!
Fantastic video and tip! And i already have the fenris..! No need to buy more expensive gear this time😄
great pedal, isn't it?
I usually combine 2 takes of single coil guitar on both channels, 2 takes of humbucker on both cannels as well, and 1 take with a fuzz right in the middle. if done properly - it makes a huge wall of sound
Wow that sounds cool. Doesn’t sound too compact with guitar tracks?
@@LivingroomGearDemos nuh, proper eq and mixing overall will make this orchestra of guitars work.
however, i have to admit that your way looks more simple. have to try it and maybe it could be a replacement to my way of recording guitar. thanks for inspiration to try something different!
I can't even imagine these handclaps doubled with fuzz 👏👏 👏👏 👏👏 👏👏
🤯
a god send
11/10 clapping stance. Do u usually use headphones or studio monitors when mixing? Sry, I'm kinda new to recording and still searching for my first audio interface 😅.
I mix on studio monitors, and funny enough I finish off the mix on my MacBook speakers. I know them so well, so I do the fine tuning with those.
@@LivingroomGearDemos thanks!
Disorder by Dot Hacker does exactly this!! No wonder it sounded huge
need to check them out!
I love fuzz and this has always been my go to for double tracking, one side fuzz other side distortion
Cool!
nice one
great storytelling
Thanks, sir!
I use a keyboard amp with three inputs and an ABY pedal that splits to three outputs. So.. I run it with bass and guitar or ukulele for that matter. I can stick a looper pedal (mine does delay also)
But yeah. With bass I use a compressor on one channel and a π fuzz with scoop-boost knob. Gain staged so they react about the same.
Guitar I'll run a fuzz face with my magnetic but a piezo bridge pickup to the compressor-fuzz section I use with bass.
Keeping the fuzz face separated gives some dynamics and can take it right to insane. Kicking off the channel from the π when turning down.
The KBA50 i have has a loop and DI etc so it works really well. Highly recommend
nice David!
This dude has brought sacrifices to the Midsommar village
😆
I did something similar, split my signal, used a clean marshall and a roland beebaa fuzz and it got the exact sound I was wanting.
💪🏻
I think its sounds great and i haver done that myself!
💪🏻
Badass tone, would this work blending the overdrive with the fuzz into the same amp?
Yes it works very well. Electro harmonix tri parallel mixer allows 3 channels of parallel mixing. I usually do a bas heavy distortion, a mid dominant distortion, and a fuzz and that mix sounds outstanding!
yup it does! You'll get a different result, though. But it's a neat trick!
Recording tricks? Hang a second mic from the ceiling (use one that can take a beating, SM57, etc), and give it a good swing when you start your take. Unpractical, hacky and inconsistent, but you can use it to mix in a roomy, naturally phasey extra little something.
But my favorite trick is to double track an acoustic with a Nashville strung guitar. Sounds like a 12-string, but without all the boomyness and with more control. That one’s pretty standard, though.
Saucy!
Jævlig konge !!
takker!
I'm surprised that you haven't checked out the Maton BB1200 JH guitar. The only problem now is the newer versions of the guitar pickups aren't as hot than the one's made prior to 2019.
Very hard to come by
sounds like two guitarists playing the same parts through their respective rigs, which is a great and classic sound.
I use overdrive and fuzz together for double tracking sometimes.
Awesome video! Have you tried to quad track with 2 fuzz guitars but mixed a bit lower than the od ones?! Or 2 od guitars and the fuzz guitar in the centre a bit lower?! I guess that I’d be a nice experiment. Nevertheless, it sounded indeed awesome !!!
I haven't, but sounds interesting! I'm not a big fan of quad tracking, but might try this
@@LivingroomGearDemos Yeah, I usually think that quad-track often times sounds congested but I've seen people doing the fuzz-centre guitar trick sometimes and it sounded nice blended in.
Great Video and idea, what about mixing? Do you use low and high cut filter and some bells around 4k?
Thanks! Low and high cut filter, yeah. Removing some resonances between 2 and 3k manually, plus the Oaksound Soothe. Guitars are compressed with the Waves CLA3A.
@@LivingroomGearDemos thanks a lot! I would like to see your whole mixing process ‘cause your drums sounds killer too! But guitars is on god mode 😂
This is actually just Logic drums that I'm compressing the crap out of 🥴
Do you record your drums yourself or do you use some kind of VSTi? Sounds great!
I sometimes use a session drummer, but in this case it's the AI Drummer in Logic. Great tool!
Please make a video how you mix and master the track! Please!
hmm mmmaaybe
glad to see that jazzmaster again
great guitar
Adding in Revolution style overdriven guitars in the chorus works every time
what is that?
@@LivingroomGearDemos just a really dirty straight DI guitar adds a real funky mid presence which works well for when you need a riff to pop in my somewhat basic experience
We need a video on hand clap TOANZ! PhaserClap? TremoClap? DelayCLAPClapclap? Ottowa-Clap?
Ottawa claps would tear a whole in the universe
What was that guitar riff I love it!!🤖📡
Thanks David, something I made for the video!
What tuning do you use?
Drop D on this one
That sounds amazing! Like and subscribe!
Thanks!
You should've added both sides fuzz part because.. I don't know who don't like fuzz, it's the best distortion. You can add another character that would demand more gain. =D Because honestly I can't hear drive guitar on heavy part at all. Yeah, they are different up the neck, maybe even too different, but does the heavy part benefit from having drive in it? donno.
Don't get me wrong, I looove fuzz. But I get a lot of comments from people who don't, or don't know how to use them.
we need more clapping in songs like we're in the 60's
2:48 rofl you are killing me wth was that????
hand claps. Very effective
Sounds a little bit of Kurt Ballou's approach :)
What does Kurt do?
@@LivingroomGearDemos When I listen to Converge I ear blends of punchy rythm and nasty rythm (fuzzes and/or HM-2) and your sound reminds me something like that
All is in the claps.

Angry internet guy 😂
A good example of this is the band “The Devil and the Almighty Blues” , one guitar is fuzzed out and the other is overdrive and tremolo. It creates a unique and interesting sound.
will check them out, thanks!
How about 4 tracks: 2 drive and 2 fuzz. Each stereo?
Probably cool! I often find 4 guitars to be a bit too much though
