- Hey guys. A little something different for y’all today. It was so nice I had to get outside.
As usual, going to see my friends in the Pat McLaughlin Band last night stirred up all the feels! Him and that band of heavyweights is just the best.
Don’t beat me up too bad for playing the guitar in some of these videos. I’m a person also. Ha!

Thank ya kindly, Guthrie and everyone else here for all of the kind words. We're all building a wonderful little community and this was a beautiful thing to wake up to. ❤
Hey Otis! I've been watching your channel for years and I've enjoyed every video. Thank you!
Hi Otis, you deserve the recognition. You're a good storyteller and you and your guests bring an interesting angle to the music history many of us enjoy nerding-out on. Also, you're a fine singer/performer in your own right. Cheers.
Hey Otis , love the channel. You should checkout interviewing Pat Sweany. He does a blues gig at the 5 spot every Monday night before Guthrie’s underdog gig. He has his own amazing music and records he puts out too.
@@davidpepper442Much love to ya, David! ❤
@@glennmuir5617Thank ya kindly, Glenn! ❤
Hey Guthrie I'm the dude that met you at the Amigo Guitar Show a couple of weeks ago and told you how much I appreciate your guitar playing but you probably don't remember me. You were really cool in person and I was really glad to get to meet you. I was actually thinking one day about what music has meant to my life and guitar in particular and it's seriously a crazy rabbit hole to go down if you really think about it. I've been obsessed with guitar literally my whole life and I'm 42 now and when my buddy was asking me how I can still be so passionate about it I was telling him what a difference it truly has made. I was thinking about my true first love in guitar was probably all the guys in Skynyrd and even though I grew up loving Michael Jackson initially it was Skynyrd that truly lit the fire to play and led me towards so many different players. Then I got a scholarship to play in the jazz program at Walter's State here in East TN and then played in bands with my buddies and then a girl came to watch us play that I had known my whole life. Then she got interested in me because of my guitar playing and she is WAY too good looking to look at me but now we have 2 kids and have been married for 2 decades. So when I think about the fact that I never "made it" as a musician I think about the fact that I made it as a person because of music and that's why I love it so much. It has made an incredible difference in my life. I'm sure it has done the same for you. Keep up the good work.
I've been subscribed to Otis Gibbs' channel for a couple years now. He is doing a great job of telling, documenting and preserving so many wonderful stories of American music and musicians. He has an excellent way of interviewing people and just gets out of the way and lets them talk. Otis also seems to be a genuinely kind and honest guy. Looking forward to your interview with Otis.
I love Otis' storytelling and his songs...he just projects what I love about folk music and poetry..Otis walks the walk!
Thanks Guthrie for the wisdom. I live in the Boston area. Music has given me everything that i am. Empathy, compassion, love, happiness, sadness.. It's emotion in the purest form. Its not all good, its not all bad. It great to have choices and thats maybe subjective. I know i like but always willing to learn and grow. Enjoy your day. Cant wait fir the new album. Ken from Boston. Saw Andy Wood and Seth Rosenbloom last night. Im still high from the talent in the room. I was moved.
I had the pleasure of see Pat McLaughlin, along with Adam Chaffins, and Bryan Simpson at 3rd and Lindsley , on Monday, 4/8, "3rd and Bluebird" songwriters in the round session. Hearing their stories of songwriting was a master class in the art of making a song. The three of them on stage exemplified the spirit of the generosity and friendship that I've seen amongst the musicians in Nashville.
Pat playing "Summer's End", with the portrait of John Prine next to the stage, made tears flowed. The power of a song.
Tip of the hat to Mr. Gibbs, one the best music vlogs around. Keep up the great. Thanks Mr. Trapp fine work! (Buy Uncle Larry a Rolling Rock for me)
I think music is a path to a spiritual awakening. Love your channel, you are helping me unlock some of the mysteries of playing the guitar. I discovered Otis Gibbs last year and was surprised we both grew up around Indianapolis. Subsequently I started diving into his music - what an awesome storyteller. The icing on the cake for me was hearing songs about places around Indiana that I can picture in my mind. Thanks again brother, have an awesome day!
That’s what I love about watching/listening to Pats band.
Great to see you again and can’t wait for “In Stereo” May 1st!
Otis has some great stories to tell and he’s got one of those great voices too.
Good and inspirational stuff Guthrie.
GT, I just love you! Always a bright spot in my mornings to look at your vids.
you're damn right we follow Otis he's the salt of the damn earth and his interviews with musicians should be put in the Smithsonian, as he is an American Treasure, a fountain of country, folk, rock and music history. Much love to you Guthrie, Otis and all your peeps, you don't know how much we love you 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 and ❤
What you saying Guthrie makes sense . I'll check Pat McLaughlin Band , Thanks . Energy , Frequency & Vibration 🎸
Beautiful stories, Guthrie. Thank you. Music IS an eternal vibration. It raises us all. That's why I vibe with the best of you and Uncle Larry, and leave the rest; the noise. Let's keep raising all boats, together. Otis Gibbs is a delight. Peace. Love, Music.
Yessir Guthrie, I’ve been following Pat McLaughlin before I found you on UA-cam and Artist Works. Pat writes and performs from the heart. That’s where music lives. Michael Rhodes, … what a loss, he left a giant legacy for the world of music.
Rest easy Michael.
My mom is 77 and jams every week with multiple people. I got my music genes from her and I would not be alive if I couldn't create music. She taught me how to listen and appreciate music and to always be open to every kind of music out there. Anyone that creates music has already won in life. Keep on crushing Guthrie. Hope to meet you one of these days. Your trio crushes by the way. I love trios and was in one for 8 years. So fun.
I loved hearing your talk here. I was there at your Underdog show last Monday and was absolutely blown away. It was my first time being in Nashville, and what you’re describing about hearing Pat, I had THAT same experience hearing you live for the first time. And I too noticed Otis when he showed up, and just assumed you two were already well acquainted. My wife, my son and I all had a great time and stayed through both incredible sets. (I was the guy who goofily came outside to shake your hand in between sets). You were always one of my favorite guitarists, but seeing you and your band up close and personal like that was next-level. Keep it up!
Thanks, all y'all 🙏🏻🤍
Music is the reason I'm still here.
It means everything….my best childhood memories; respite from adults behaving badly was spent listening to the radio in the early 70’s, then records as as soon as I graduated from my Fischer Price Record Player. 50+ years later, the turn table is hot, the speakers are rocking and guitars are always in-tune.
Right on, I love Otis Gibbs channel 👍
Me too!
Me 2 🎸👍
I jam 2 times a week with my cool cats, we are the gt's(gintonics) i have hard to explane with words the joy it gives me...
Otis does have a good channel .Thank you Guthrie Class act you are .Can't wait for the new record with uncle Larry. I've learned some priceless insight from guys like you caged etc.anyway thank you so much !! 😊😊
Much appreciated!
Man you perfectly described the music scene down here in the Villages in Florida, there are so many “retired musicians “that have groups from big band to rock, etc…. and when you talk to these musicians 60 to 90 years old they all said it like you did,: The passion never fades and the fun of learning only increases the quality thru the years🎶
You, Otis, Tom, all great channels!!! Thank you!!!
Glad you like them!
Completely agree... speaking truth
Nice change of pace here GT, I now know who Kenny Greenberg is and remember the video Brett Pappa did of you playing at Kenny's place, a great musical experience for me. Anyway cheers Guthrie, always good to talk.
Thanks Guthrie for tipping the hat to Otis, a great cat indeed. We all are looking forward to checking out you and Uncle Larrys project, thanks for the rap !
We had a blast in East Nashville and we will never forget meeting you and having a front row seat at the Underdog. Will always honor your contribution to music, wherever you are playing it, live or recorded. Cheers GT . . . TC
Dude is on an album with TWO of my heroes in Clapton and Vince Gill. Deservedly so. Life is good for Guthrie!
We love you GT!! These talks are priceless. Thank you for sharing your insights.. it means a lot coming from a lifelong music guy like yourself 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🎶🎶🎶🎶
You are so welcome
It’s like Design - many people say it’s all subjective - but having an opinion comes for free - having knowledge costs and those that care invest time and money in their passion, there really is a difference between good and bad.
You don’t have to like something to recognise its qualities but it’s important to know the difference - good music, like good design, matters.
Very well said. Thank you.
The music I make tells my wife that I’ve spent too much time and money to play an instrument poorly! Great stuff Guthrie! I’ll go to my grave saying the into to Welcome to the jungle changed my life!
Great video Guthrie! I've been listening and playing Andy Timmons - Here Lies the Heart. It really moves me.. PEACE 😉
Great episode Guthrie…Otis is a gem.
you should do more stuff like this I really enjoyed this.
I was there too brother. I come down from Cincinnati almost every time he’s played in a little while. It is an amazing experience every time. It speaks to me too. I alway see you there. Spoke to you at the sound board the other night when we were both complimenting the sound man. I’ll see you at the clinic next week. Can’t wait to hang out, learn from you and jam with you. I love what you’re doing. I love this video. Uncle Pat is such a gem and you laid it out so perfectly from his groove to his lyrics to the importance of the Kenny Greenberg solo factor. Love that band and love your approach to music. See you soon.
Otis is awesome.
I still listen to u playing with Kenny in his basement from bpapa!! Fr
Pat McLaughlin is a national treasure, as is his band. Seeing him for the first time was a revelation. Just a wonderful singer songwriter and musician.
He's a world treasure, why just National treasure ?
What does music mean to you? My answer- EVERYTHING! I am 66 years old now. I picked up a guitar and learned to play back in about 1969. I fell deeply in love with the music from that era, the late 60's and mainly the 70's. So my reality and my perception of music is so much different than yours, but in a way its also the same. Just in the last 5 years or so I finally heard and fell in love with John Prine. I also took a listen for the first time today to Pat Mclaughlin. I liked him a lot, so he acquired a new fan today. However the music I grew up with will always be a part of me and a big part of who I am. I do think there were great songwriters from that era...will we ever have another Paul McCartney to write songs like "Eleanor Rigby" or another Eric Clapton to write a song like " Bell Bottom Blue's" again? Probably not! ....But for now thats where my heart will always be.....During the opening credits to the Woodstock movie..The song " Long time gone" by CSNY plays--- that is where I hope I find myself when I get to the "other side" Thanks Guthrie.
I’ve already subscribed to Otis. Great Dude! Cant wait for the release in May!
Well, the reality is that we as artists & musicians often have a different appreciation for what we hear, as we have spent countless hours cultivating our hearing to to hear and understand all the nuisances of great music, and what is involved in creating these pieces. A completely regular person I know once commented to me that all guitar players sounded the same to her. At first I was gobsmacked by that comment, but then after thinking about it, without a knowledge of music this could indeed be just a simple fact. I also have known people who have no sense of esthetics. To them, all they see is function, and any of the glitz and glitter just doesn't move them at all, they just see it as superfluous non-essentials. The same goes for appreciation of good food and fine wines. Without a cultivated palate, these finer things mean little. But for those of us with a more deep understanding and appreciation of music, we marvel in the artistry of the truly gifted musicians who we discover along the way, and Guthrie Trapp is in an elite group of guitarists for sure.
That is it exactly. Well said for sure. It doesn’t make anyone better or worse. It’s just the product of our environments I guess. It’s a very long conversation with many perspectives.
Otis reads Mojo, for sure !
Music=life. Love ya GT.
Great video...Thanks for those inspiring words about the magic of music. Cant wait for In Stereo!
Love this conversation Guthrie you are exactly right! So happy to hear you are so passionate about making good music not like the rhyming money makers of Nashville. When I hear some of the junk that sounds exactly the same it does absolutely nothing for me. So yes there is a big difference between music that moves you and whatever that other crap is. I am so thankful you and Uncle Larry, Brett Papa, Jack and Corey do what you do. You keep me focused on getting better and enjoying music with feeling.
Thank you brother
.
Hi Guthrie . Glad youve discovered Otis Gibbs. youre all doing remarkable and great work to keep great music alive. Big fan of all of you .
Awesome, thank you!
Man so many people needed to hear this, thanks for sharing your thoughts
My pleasure!
Otis is the best, Guthrie! Not so bad yourself, brother…🔥🎸
Subscribed to Otis Gibbs now !
Eight bars your story touched me you got close to the summit and it was snacked away from you the memories are big. I’m 80 started my music journey 6 years ago frustrated knowing that time is not on my side not being able to acquire skills and finesse to become what I would like to become In a way the flip side of the same coin. I need to to work harder and practice more. God Bless you Thank you for your story
Man, when I saw the title, "What does music mean to you?" I had a bit of a chuckle. I am one of a few people on this planet who grew up the way I did, and it made music as important to me as air is to other people. My father was in the Big Bands. Not just a band in some little berg, but the big leagues. Buddy Rich was my Godfather. At 3 years old, I sat next to Stan Kenton and turned the pages of his music as he played. I was already reading music, and no one taught me. I just picked it up watching and listening. I started playing instruments outside the home in 3rd grade, where I took up the trombone because I was the only kid who could reach the 7th position with the slide. By high school, I was sight reading bass in jazz and classical bands. Soon I switched to guitar and fell in love with it. Life was great. Then I had back surgery from a quack. That a-hole put me on opioids for the next 30 years! I finally asked my new doctor to take me off them and it ruined me. After 2 years of them not knowing why I was so sick all the time, they figured out I needed to be on detox meds for the rest of my life. Only telling you this because one of the insidious side effects of all that was I now have "intention tremors" where my hands look fine until I try to do something with them. Then they literally freak out. Sucks so bad. All I could do with them now is sign my name, sort of, and play music, but just a little bit. Kills me. I can't play gigs any longer. I used to teach things like "Dust in the Wind" but now I cannot even sort of play it. No finger picking. I have to warm up for about an hour before I can play anything fairly well with someone else. It still dominates my head, though. It's all I have ever known. Music is the whole reason for being, in my book. Music makes the world calm down and make sense. I just don't get to play any more.
Sending love your way, courage !
Just started streaming Pat McLaughlin!!! Great suggestion! Thanks, GT!
I LOVE your guitar lessons but I think this kind of talk helps some us process & progress through our own profound musical journey!
Keep them coming when you get the urge to do so!!!
Will check Otis out.
Wooooo > On YT : Pat McLaughlin - Keep the Music Playing - Live From Leipers Fork
You know something GT? I remember when you were starting out and weren't as comfortable "filming". You just kept to your moral compass, stayed honest and genuine, credited others and kept things real. From a park table or your living room, it's all good. Hope to see you at the Underdog in June, God willing and the creek don't rise. -GB
Otis is super cool
Cheers...
This is great man, keep up the good work!✌️
Thanks, will do!
I love what you and Larry do and more importantly, what you represent.
Otis Gibbs should be on money. A true National Treasure at my house
Love me some Otis! I was a fan back in the Podcast days! Man I love everything you have to say, whether it’s on the guitar or with words my man. Never stop my brother!!!
I completely understand this. I’m very average guitar but played trumpet growing up and listening to Van Halen and prog rock. It was complicated more than the 1,4,5 songs these days. I don’t know it’s just disappointing stuff that comes out. That’s why I watch you and little Tommy Bukovac
Great stuff, G.T. you're on the right path, my friend. I've learned so much from you and guys like you.
Each person is an artist. Who they are, is their art. Each of us is a song.
My music is me wanting to have something i like. That’s a-lot different from you pros. I don’t pretend they are the same thing. But i dig both.
I’ve known Otis for 30 years, he was a legend then, we he talked we all listened.
Music is the song of life's emotions, be it happiness, sadness, anger, sorrow, etc. The music that moves you is the music that helps define your life and gives it a special meaning along with the relationships we all have with the friends and family in our lives. Guthrie, keep making the music that moves you (and us). Cheers all.
When I was growing up music was everything to us. If it wasn`t sports, you had to have been into music and probably learned to play one or more instruments that was floating your boat. That came to a fever pitch with stadium gigs by huge popular acts, mostly from across the pond, and since music has splintered into so many different styles to now. Its more or less a thing to promote an ad or service as much as a field you want to get into and maybe one day play a stadium. Like when that was all we had, damn good music you were willing to put up with the crowds flocking to some show.
Just like Duke Ellington said: there are two types of music, good music and everything else
Amen brother!
Otis - a Hoosier boy like me - good guy - Guthrie can we pre-order vinyl yet?
May 1st!! Thanks !
You’re the man GT Thanks
Thanks man!
Otis Gibbs is the truth
Otis is an amazing story teller and musician.👌
Check him out, he is definitely a part of the heart and soul of music.🤙
❤
Mr GT, it is a real treat to have you share the passion of your heart, not just your phenom skills. With you on your take. We only have so many days on this old blue ball, music is a language of heart and heaven, so lets spend our time, whether playing, writing or listening, to that which reaches in deep and moves us. Thanks for leading the way.
Love Otis!
Awesome, dude there’s nothin like hearing an accomplished musician saying great things about he’s peers. Trust me this vid is great addition to your channel. Ive followed your career since your tenure with Don Kelly, to say the lest I’m envious. Very few people get to make a living do what they are passionate about. Your one of the few and it’s obvious your still passionate about it. Keep it up man
love otis, love you, and love the just chatting video. really good.
That’s not too much talking.
It’s great to talk about music.
And you’re such a humble guy while being one of the baddest motherfucker on the planet on guitar !
Keep going man 🤘
Life. Thats what music means to me.
👍
hi bud how ya doing? hope all is well thanks for all you do ! stay safe!
Thanks, you too!
I think what you’re saying is there’s objectively good art, including music, paintings, food, etc. doesn’t mean I like it all, but there’s a huge difference between the five notes I play and the same five notes Miles Davis plays.
Beautiful vid dude. Important stuff…
Glad you liked it!
I think music can be subjective, definitely. The most popular songs are well crafted, yet I personally don’t care for the current hits even though I know they are obviously well written as evidenced by their popularity. I know opera singers are highly skilled but I really can’t listen to them lol. Perhaps it’s more about subjective in personal taste as opposed to quality of songwriting or musicianship. For example, I am 100% certain that the Guthrie/Buk record is going to be absolute FIRE but I am 99% sure my wife will be saying things like, “why are you listening to that AGAIN. GAWD.” lol love your channel, love Otis, love Uncle Larry, keep the fire content coming!!!
Been an Otis subscriber for a while now. Great cat. By the way, music means nothing to me. How did I end up on this channel?🤣🤣🤣🤣Have a great week GT!
Man I always take for granted that people just always have a natural love for music and dogs but there are actually people that love neither and you, my friend, are a genuine oddity and I'm glad to get to meet you. LOL!
Watch a movie from the 1970's.... Cuckoo's Nest, Apocalypse Now, The French Connection, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Ballad Of Cable Hogue, Rocky, The Deep, Days Of Heaven, Jaws and on and on...now we have Super Hero huge budget Films that have characters who are thinner than the paper the scripts are printed on. Yup "progress" is sure as hell NOT linear...
I need good melody, interesting rhythms, something unique about the approach.
