    This author's own words undermine her credibility. One minute she is talking about SSBNs then 5 minutes later she has forgotten them completely and claims the US doesn't have ICBMs that could hit NK without them overflying Russia. The land based stuff is irrelevant. The USN could park a SSBN 50 miles from Pyongyang and the Dear Leader would never know. Later she doubled down, stating that this was a "huge hole in our national security". My Spidey Sense says someone pushing for longer range land based missiles that nobody needs spun her this silly scenario that anyone with access to a map could see through by observing the proximity of NK to both the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea.

    The authro's supposition that an American counter attack on North Korean would require an ICBM and not simply a sub based launch from the pacific so as to antagonize Russia seems like a end of the spectrum poor choice for the US president who by the author's own admission has a menu of retaliator options available to him. While it may make for a impactful story telling mechanism how many sub-optimal choices does the author really need to string together in order to make the book work, as if real nuclear launches aren't bad enough.

      they'll hypothesise endlessly about a NK situation but will never ask if a subverted democracy that has installed nominal leadership serving interests besides those of the voters might pursue an escalatory war path
      on an unrelated note, the USA is currently occupying a third of Syria, selling arms to saudi, and the list goes on for quite a while.

    • @Reiman33
      @Reiman33 Місяць тому

      @discordantduck1808
      Syria is a failed state so who cares?
      At the end of the day there is no such thing as escalation unless it is a direct conflict with a parity power.
      Name a single desert nation with parity to the US?
      Maybe Iran? There is no nuclear war possible unless america is struck first. Given there is no power that could hope to win in a first strike, there is nothing to worry about.
      Let me reiterate: unless you are speaking of scifi story level of nonsense like an american president launching a first strike for no reason, there is no enemy to america that can facilitate MAD. Without that, no nuclear war.

    I read Nuclear War: A Scenario in one sitting after listening to this. Incredible and terrifying book. There's a couple 'just-so' moments that ensure that the situation continuously worsens that do not feel entirely plausible, but the idea that the fate of the entire world can rest on, say, whether or not the President of the United States can get in contact with the President of Russia in the next ten minutes, is utterly terrifying.

    Recently I watched a lecture series on Prime about pre-Inca cultures in the Andes. It described an ancient urban culture that lasted a couple thousand years. The amazing thing was that there were no defensive walls around the cities, and no evidence of warfare. It was the most hopeful thing I have ever heard

    • @AS-gz8oe
      @AS-gz8oe Місяць тому +1

      Should it be? Given that those people were wiped out by the ruthless, inhumane actions of our current over-seers perhaps you should rethink what about it is so inspiring to you

    • @jakeb3157
      @jakeb3157 Місяць тому +1

      Personally I think it would take more than just an absence of evidence of warfare to support the notion of an entire civilization was completely without it. It's a bit like telling me there's no evidence that they spoke, I think it's still a much safer bet that they did. We are almost certainly the least violent, most politically unified human beings in the history of the world, unless the Atlantians show up. If there are conditions in which human beings can live peaceably we are much closer to those conditions than ever we have been. I think we easily beat any of our ancestors in regards to any metrics that I would imagine make peace easier, extreme material abundance, highly unified and stable political units on a scale our ancestors couldn't imagine, relatively clear lines of authority, unprecedented cultural exchange, mutual respect and knowledge, technologies of communication that allow people across the planet to communicate. Yet we still have wars, so I'd say a bunch of dudes who can't just call the police when someone is bothering them probably fought quite a bit more.

    • @user-pp3gn9iv4u
      @user-pp3gn9iv4u Місяць тому

      Yes, it does take more than an absence of evidence to determine whether this culture had no warfare. I would recommend the lecture series because it was very convincing. I'm 62, and believed that war is the human condition. That is why I was so impressed

    Dude i need a 4hr podcast minimum. You are just teasing with these hour episodes. Stop it.
    4-12hrs, that's what i need.

      Her over dramatic approach and poorly understood issues was too much. I had to stop half way through. It's astounding that she interviewed so many top level people and understood so little.

    One thing took me off of the narrative. At some point, it is said that an Ohio class submarine has 90 nuclear missiles, then moments later it is said that the only way to reach North Korea would be sending missiles over Russia. Maybe this is explained on the book, but it kinds of created a contrievance for the dramatized scenario to ensue.

    I feel like this channel is being artificially suppressed. How is there only 500K subscribers?
