  • Recently I bought a large lot of old computers for $50, this included a 17" Apple iMac with lots of holes drilled in the back! Why would someone do that? Let's find out :) #Apple #iMac #G5

      I have a question.
I have a similar model iMac, the one with a camera (I think 2006)
When I got it it had one, but about 2 months later of use, it had 7 lines of various colors on the screen.
Can you tell me why, and if or how I can fix it??

It is most often ( well in our household ) used as a antiseptic in winter, you spray in the room and it kills flu germs, and smells nice. Often you can spray it on a hankerchief ( does anyone use hankies in the outside world these days - definitely not anyone at the shops ) and use it to feel better.
It works like Glen20 but without the horrible smell
I have never used it for cleaning, but there is liquid versions that look waterish / methylated spirits

Damn, I was hoping you'd say the speed holes are a miracle cure for overheating :(
I have an early 2008 MacBook Core 2 Duo that works perfectly except for the CPU reaching about 1000 degrees within minutes of booting. This happens whether I actually open any tasks or not. After having no success with air dusters I tried dismantling it to investigate, but found this impossible without snapping the keyboard panel as many of the screws were mashed and inextricable. It's a shame as it's a beautiful machine, and the OS is absolutely seamless even 12 years on. I don't want to use it as my daily, but I'd like to restore it to at least a usable state so it can function as a backup/Windows alternative when needed, but unfortunately this looks unlikely now.

I had the 20" version of this iMac and it was my main desktop from 2005-2007. I most likely would have gotten another year or two out of it but the video board died - while playing World of Warcraft. Probably due to heat, something I didn't pay attention to back then. I sold it to someone who used it as a headless server for almost 10 years after that before retiring the machine to a landfill.

Elizabeth Marks-Graham the 2017 iMac which I have, is put together with double sided tape. You need special mini pizza cutter to break the seal to open it up, once you’re done...you have to carefully align it with new double sided tape and mount it back on. I think Apple started doing that in 2013 iMac or newer.

Helladamnleet Its a G4 Powermac Dual core 533mhz. It’s working just fine. I am running GarageBand 3, Ableton Live 7, FM7, and Reason 3, all without any issues. Since I left the comment above I ended up finding a mint condition G5 iMac cheap, so I now have one. I actually quite like it. I found out that most problems with overheating on the G5 is due to dried up Thermo grease, or people not doing the entire job of re-applying the grease. You have to remove everything to get under the logic board to access the cpu as well as the easy to remove heat sink on the top of the logic board. It stays cool just fine, however, the fan kicks on sometimes, making it hard to use with microphones. It’s really cool having the last non-intel iMacs in great condition.

Strange, i have a G4 ibook ( white snowbook ) with the highest 1.33 GHz processor and 1.5G ram and it "shudders" in youtube. Admitably it is not a silver powerbook with the top end GPU, but it really struggles, I do use the TenFourFox browser for normal sites.
But like i say, it it for the era and software at the time, it still loves office 2004 and all of the other 10.4 tiger software( same as office 2003 for PC , just took longer to port to PPC )
My other 2 macs are 2008 Macbook and also a 2008 Imac Core2 duo, both running 10.6 Snow Leopard ( i tried the hack to lion but it did not work ), at least firefox is sort of curent and i use VLC for media player. Both i have moded with "refind" to dual boot into Linux Mint - that uses basically the current browser and is say 20% lighter on resources than OSX 10.6
I do have a Linux Mint for PPC but never installed it

But then I don't know anything about the inside of those G5 blocks, maybe you know something I don't and it would be futile. Nice reflection on Apple. I have an Imac from 2010 which I still use and it needs that third party fan system. Lame! I have an Imac from 2008 that also still runs and it overheats like mad. I've considered drilling holes in it but I would drill a hell of a lot more holes than that guy did.

I was actually able to put a SSD into my 2004 1.6 GHz base model iMac G5 and it worked perfectly fine. Even though it didn't improve the performance very much because it's just SATA 1. So after I tried it out and had no real benefit I fitted the original 80 GB hard drive into the iMac

I drilled holes in the bottom case of my 2011 macbook pro, it had bad overheating problems and drilling the holes helped lower temp by around 6-8 C.

I personally wouldn't recommend using any older Macs and MacBooks pre-Intel. The performance is poor, they run loud and hot, backwards compatibility is stunted and upgrading them is limited. Get something with at least a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo, upgrade the RAM, put in an SSD and you've got a decent computer for everyday use.

it would look yucky, you can often find parts machines or outer shells on ebay, but it would cost the same as a fully working machine.
I took a photo and i showed a mate on mine, he said may dremzel the holes into straight lines , but there are to many of them close together, so the only option is to cut it out and fit a normal cooling fan with a mesh cover - or place some small speakers with a cloth mesh
      Regards
      George

Just wipe a bit of eucalyptus oil on the sata contacts and you'll be able to install the ssd. Make sure you use a micro fiber cloth.

    Hi.
I have an old iMac Late 2009 - MB950LL/A* - iMac10,1-A1311-2308 with dual core E7600 processor, Can we upgrade just the processor to Core 2 Quad Q9650, my search criteria was LGA 775 socket. if not Q9650, what could be the best processor with 4 cores and 6Mb or more cache.
    Thanks a Million
