  • Here's the instructional video on how to build my advanced, servo based animatronic heart mechanism using arduino and 3D printing. I designed it for use in a silicone jacket but you can use the fabric jacket from my previous tutorial too!

    Instructable for thorough text-based instructions: www.instructables.com/id/Sili...
    Mechanism components:
    Various screws between M1 and M3
    PCA9685 16-channel servo driver board or similar - amzn.to/2JPOzsx
    Arduino Micro - amzn.to/2q4cpdw
    3 servos - DS-843MG servos are recommended for their strength needed to stretch out the silicone skin, but the design can also support MG90s servos (2x amzn.to/2rF8EeM)
    10K Potentiometer - amzn.to/2XdaL5g
    5.5mm DC panel input - amzn.to/2pmGch6
    5V power supply - amzn.to/2rCyJer
    Jumper cables - amzn.to/2rK3qP2
    Some slightly thicker wire for the power supply
    500g Platsil Gel 00 (I couldn't find a link for such a small amount but here is 2lb - amzn.to/2QiQf1H)
    2kg Tinsil 7025 -
    A small amount of Ease Release 205
    Silicone pigment in dark red
    A suitable container, which may be constructed using hot glue and styrene or similar
    Airbrush and acrylic paints
    Pin vice hand drill
    Soldering Iron
    Electrical tape
    Fake blood!

    Great job Will, this will be my next project. Downloaded STL files and the Top Panel is not included, all other files are there. I have built up the battery version you posted and it works great. Will be sculpting the heart of Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean for a Halloween display. I have just finished making an animatronic head of Davy complete with 3 axis movement, talking jaw and animated tentacles.

    Very awesome Project! But why dont you just use the pwm pins from the Arduino to control the servos?

    • @WillCogley
      @WillCogley  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I think that would be possible but I prefer to power the servos separately because the supplied current usually fluctuates a lot as the servos move.

    • @gecko5
      @gecko5 4 роки тому

      Yea i had the same problem, my arduino kept resetting when the servos moved and they jittered a lot, but if you use a capacitor with about 1000 to 3000µF it smooths out the fluctuations.

    • @MakunaRGBIC
      @MakunaRGBIC 4 роки тому

      There is a difference between directly connecting the signal wires to the Arduino and/or connecting the power wires.
      If you remove the Servo board, run that power directly to the servo, connect the GND between the Arduino and that power in, and then run signal wire directly from the Arduino to servo signal, there should be no need for the servo board at all; saving space and cost.

    The concept of trying to mimic the operation of an organic human heart with mechanisms has been abandoned, it has been discovered, that it is much easier to use two mini turbine pumps, to replace the heart. many scientists initially were worried that the blades inside of the miniature motors would shred, and destroy all of the blood cells in the human body, although however we have discovered that that is not the case. every time somebody has tried to create a mechanical heart that reproduces the same function as the actual Organ has failed relatively quickly, trying to reproduce such a complex system is unnecessary, a simple submersible pump can replace the heart easily, there are a lot of people walking around right now that don't even have a pulse.
