  • Growing up I've fished in the outer banks from beaches in Corolla, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags head. Over the years I have learned a lot, and I hope to share some of my knowledge with you.
    In this video I teach you how to safely remove a hook from a sting ray, and talk about different species of fish, and different baits available right in the surf.
    If you are planning to fish in Duck, NC, or any of the other northern beaches you might want to watch this video. You will learn how to have fun and catch fish in the OBX.
    We are catching Flounder, Southern King Fish, Spot, Stingrays, Menhaden.

    Thank you for a great informational video! I’m going down next week for about two weeks and just getting into surf fishing coming from bass fishing my whole life. When are the best times to fish the surf? I was always told fishing the tides were the most effective ways to catch fish. I would really appreciate any knowledge you give me! Thank you!

    • @HicksHooks
      @HicksHooks  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Ryan! Thanks for tuning in. I think fishing the rising and falling tides are always good. However, I really find my best luck on the beach is in the morning when the sun is rising, and the evening when the sun is setting. If you are going to fish the sound, the moving tides will definitely be the better time to fish. Tight lines buddy! I hope the weather cooperates!

    Heading out to the OBX this weekend I hope November is good fishing. I'm not sure if it has already been commented but that bug is a type of parasite (louse) that takes up shop in a fishes mouth, cuts the blood vessels in its tongue and feeds off of it until it eventually replaces the tongue. Pretty brutal.

      @@HicksHooks the surf was way too rough for me to fish with my gear we hit Avon pier with a little luck. It was taking about 6 to 8 ounces to stay on the bottom. Two guys got some really nice reds we pulled a decent sea mullet and a black drum that was short. Not the best weather for tent camping we left really early Sunday just as tides were starting to come over the dunes. Almost got stranded but I don't think I would have minded that much at all.

    Hello. Nice video. Where is a good place to go crabbing in the OBX?

    • @HicksHooks
      @HicksHooks  3 роки тому

      Hey Mark! Thanks for watching! The Blue Crabs are all throughout the Sound. Depending on where you are, there are a few places you could try. If you are in Nags Head, you could try the fishing pier on Cedar Island. It is on the left on the way to Manteo. If you are closer to Duck, there are many spots you can try on the board walk... If you don't catch your limit, you can buy the rest from Dockside in Duck. Good luck! I like chicken nets and string! It'll keep you busy all day! TIGHT LINES!

    • @HicksHooks
      @HicksHooks  3 роки тому +2

      If you are fishing off of the beach, I'd recommend a 7 ft medium or medium heavy rod, and a reel to match. Anything you'd recommend for flyfishing the surf?

    • @HicksHooks
      @HicksHooks  2 роки тому

      I'd recommend a 9 or 10 weight rod with an intermediate line. I have an intermediate line with a clear shooting head, and I use about 18 - 24 inches of 20 pound test fluorocarbon leader. I like throwing Clouser minnows. Oh yeah.. be sure your reel has a sealed drag. The salt can really mess up a reel. Tight lines!

      That should probably be ok if you are fishing off of the beach in the trough. I usually use 12 lb test with a 6 foot surf rod. However, I have seen people do just fine pitching a bottom rig with a 1 oz wt on a bass rod. If the surf is rough, or the current is up you will have to beef up your rod.
