Can't believe we caught this!! Bass Fishing Potomac River
What fish are in the Potomac River? You never know what you are going to pull out of the pull out of the water fishing the Potomac River in Maryland and DC.
This video will show you how diverse the species of fish in Washington DC can be. It is a healthy river with trophy largemouth bass, trophy smallmouth bass, and large urban striped bass. It is hard to tell what you can catch on the Potomac river on any given day.
In this video we get into a school of striped bass, smallmouth bass, and some healthy large mouth bass. I also catch my first ever tagged fish. I learned what to do when you catch a tagged fish.

      Try walking down the beach a bit and find a spot where the water gets deep. I know a storm blew threw the Duck area a while back and washed out the trough, but there are still a few deep holes out there. You also might want to try a smaller sized hook on your bottom rigs. Tight lines and thanks for tuning in!

      My smaller rod is a 7 foot medium heavy ugly stik, and the long rod was 11' old rod from the 1980's. Honestly, the big fish in the summer time are mostly blues and Spanish Mackerel. I use my 7 foot rod with a braided 20 lb line and a 20 lb mono leader. I cast a 1.5 oz Clark Casting spoon. If the wind is blowing from the east or Northeast they should be close enough to shore to catch. Tight lines and thanks for watching!

    • @HicksHooks
      @HicksHooks Рік тому

      Great question! I usually prefer to use 12-15 pound mono on my 7 ft surf rod. Last time I was out, I had one rod with mono and one with braid. I feel like the braid got more caught up in the tide and wind, whereas my mono stayed tighter to the bottom rig and was able to cut through more of the wind and the tide. I would recommend stopping into one of the local bait shops when you get there, and have them string up your reel. It's usually a little cheaper or about the same price as buying online. • @HicksHooks
      @HicksHooks Рік тому

      Thanks so much for tuning in! That's a great question. I usually put my rod holders up on the beach for two reasons. First, I feel like it helps keep more line out of the water. This helps keep my sinker in place because the current has a tendency to pull on the line. The second reason is, waves often break further up the beach which can knock your rod and sand spike in the water. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than getting sand caught up in your reel. Tight lines and thanks for subscribing!

    • @HicksHooks
      @HicksHooks Рік тому

      When you set up on the beach, make sure you are on a low point between two humps. This is the deepest part of the trough in front of you. Make sure you aren't casting too far. The fish tend to congregate right in the first drop off in the trough. Use smaller hooks. I usually use size 4 hooks, but sometimes go down to size 6. Keep your line tight. After you cast, make sure your line isn't swaying in the wind. If so, put on a size 2 or 3 oz sinker. Use small pieces of shrimp. They seem to catch fish when nothing else is. Fish when the sun is rising and when the sun is setting. Less people are out, and I feel like the fish are more active. Let me how you do tomorrow, and I will try to help you more. Tight lines buddy! Hang in there!!!
