Another tip for those who need it: trigger tricking or spring removal is done somewhat often. aMSa and Dinowulf trigger trick, avalancer spring removes, and v-man does neither, he muscles through it. The reason for the first one is to increase the consistency, the reason for the second is to increase the consistency while making it easier on the hands and more responsive. the reason for the last one is he learned before this info was widely available and just learned how to do it the hard way and doesn't wanna learn any other way. But honestly if you can do it you can do it. Some moves come out slow enough you can reaction parry, and another thing to note- you can parry grabs if you're being tech chased. (since it's the same invincibility as respawn, trust me it works) A big weakness to parry isn't multi hit moves, it's moves that have hitboxes separated by 5 frames or so, because these become impossible to parry without getting hit by the second hitbox. This is why moves like fox drill make parrying hard, however yoshi isn't without options (like perfect wave dash back out of parry for a lot of dair spacings) But there wind up being better options against characters with those specs. OH and ice climbers near impossible to parry when they're both together.
Another lesser known option is just moving your spring inside the controller below the trigger, where you can only get digital presses but still feel the resistance of having a spring. And another general concern some people may not be aware of, is if you remove your spring to only get digital press, you won't be able to shield with that trigger in brawl or smash 4.
Trigger tricking is when you hold down the trigger while plugging in your controller - what I am talking about is actually opening up your controller and moving the piece to prevent any analog inputs from being detected.
レヨメエ I can double jump land parry with an xbox controller everytime but i find it harder but can still do it with my stock gcc but im thinking of removing my spring
I've said to multiple people when I talk about Yoshi in general that Yoshi has both the best shield and the worst shield in the game. No jump OoS is an issue, Parry is insane, No shieldstun is insane, cannot be shieldpoke is pretty good, sliding really far while lightshielding is also really good. I'm personally a fan of his shield and I wouldn't change it for a "normal" shield (I'm probably just used to it at this point lmao). Gotta admit tho, if everyone could parry in Melee, the metagame would be really different and it would be insane (and really fun) to watch and play !
Mugifi I still don't really understand why a parry is better than a regular character's powershield. Like, is there a difference in the frame advantage?
@@trioladej 3 years ago but the fact it's invincible means the attacker still suffers hitlag, but not yoshi, yoshi also doesn't move at all and can jump or do shield actions out of it. Take peach's fair for example. On shield it's +4 when done well, but with parry it's -11.
well, grabs become less viable because a safer, more basic rushdown is much easier to implement, generally benefiting just about every top tier character other than Iceclimbers. All players would use crouch cancelling a lot more and would be more pivotal to play around to win a match. All of this is because the second best defensive option, shielding-second to mobility, would be unviable. Characters that can play defensively or offensively while beating out crouch cancel will see a large power boost. defensive ground moves like tilts will be used more as well, at least against aerial opponents who can beat crouch cancel(like Falcon knee rush).
To answer the questions, I'd say not suffering shield stun and being impossible to shield stab are pretty great for Yoshi. The former would be broken if Yoshi had a 7 frame grab like most of the cast, or the ability to jump out of shield, but even without that, it lets Yoshi invisible ceiling characters who rarely experience it in singles by doing shield drop aerials vs their ground moves. Not having to worry about shield stabbing means you can wholly devote the control stick to shield DI instead of trying to angle it. Also, getting to choose between lightshield to escape pressure cleanly or hard shield to not suffer any pushback when you can get a guaranteed punish pretty great. It's not Yoshi's shield that hurts him, it's how slow his only normal options for retaliation out of shield are. If Yoshi had a normal shield, presumably he'd lose parry, get to shield more freely in neutral because he could wavedash out to reposition, and still have a solid nair OoS even if shield grab would actually get worse than it already is. If everyone else had Yoshi's shield, run up shield would be a much more exploitable approach option, sex kicks and similar moves would start to become kind of awful because they'd just get parried, and crossing up wouldn't be very legitimate as a way to make an approach safe. Puff would probably exploit this the worst because she'd just parry grabs that could hit her crouch and parry meteors/spikes into rest. Shield pressure pretty much wouldn't matter because it would never stab and everyone could just lightshield to get away. Marth shield grabs every Falco free because now he doesn't suffer shield stun or pushback and can just shield DI in if they try to fade away on their aerial. The short of it is: Multihits become extremely important, pressure ceases to be a valuable asset, characters with strong out of shield options get them buffed, but waiting in shield is discouraged more than it already is nonetheless. It probably becomes that much more optimal to just keep moving in a match.
Some yoshi advice : if you hold a trigger in when you plug your controller in it mskes it so you can only hard shield and this makes parrying much more consistent
Oh wow it works! Now I can wavedash consistently. I can't believe I can still learn new stuff after 17 years. I love this game. Is doing this well known or did you discover this yourself?
I would enjoy a DK video. I feel like his grab game is one of the best in the game. Also, Ding Dong (jump->Cargo up throw->up air kill) works in this game like it does in SSB4, but at later percents.
honestly if you wanna find reasons to respect him, he practices almost every day before work some form of smash (not every day but a decent ammount) and he works 16 hours days. The things he practices include platform movement for targeting positions opponents may wind up in thinking they're safe, dash cancel d-smash at the perfect distance, and most impressive of all, shield pressure that mixes in parries to prevent being hit by shield grab (since they left out here that parry beats grab) Watching him do stuff is very impressive. I do recommend watching him at some point. His twitch channel is aMSaYoshi Oh and apparently he's going to be holding weeklies in japan around the 19th of October or so OH and before that- aMSa is going to be taking part in the big house 7, so keep an eye out~
If everyone had yoshi's shield then there would be another tech skill to learn and there would be even more mindgames, like making someone parry when they shouldn't, making someone parry early or late, it would be like if everyone had a marth's counter but could do aerials and much more with it (yes that's a terrible explanation, but I can't think of anything else)
It would be like street fighter 3 where everyone can parry everyone's moves. but it's at least nice that one of the not so great characters has something like this to tempt people who might considering taking advantage of it like aMSa to playing with him and actually over coming Yoshi's limitation against others with it.
Hey, i like u just stay active with cool tuts! Would be nice if u consider mid-tiers aswell, like yoshi! The Doc needs some tuts aswell! have a good one, we love ur work!!! greetings
I think, if every character could "parry", then we would have more respect from the fighting game comunity since that, along with lifebars is the main reason people argue smash is not a fighting game

レヨメエ actually, in 64, parrying is a 4 frame window and there is powershield or problem with entering shield or anything else so you'll always get it if you hit that 4 frame window, and he can jump oos anyways
fox can still CC most of yoshi's attacks and if he lands a dair fox can do waveshine JC usmash which kills yoshi at 86% without DI, and yes i tested this ingame. you can test it yourself and you will get the same result. Also, uthrow -> uair kills at 82%
ok but fo real youre gonna confuse people by saying stuff like "the pre-shielding animation" since people are already running around thinking you can't block on frame 1 edit: if everyone had the same shield as yoshi i would rather play brawl or even smash 4
I will amswer to the Questions of the video 1. Yoshi's shield is decent but very laggy 2.Yes he defenitly be better with a normal shield 3. I don't know but the game will be much slower with no perfect shield time perfect inputs

Trigger tricking is when you hold down the trigger while plugging in your controller - what I am talking about is actually opening up your controller and moving the piece to prevent any analog inputs from being detected.
do a whole yoshi guide!!
レヨメエ I can double jump land parry with an xbox controller everytime but i find it harder but can still do it with my stock gcc but im thinking of removing my spring
2:28 Yoshi's voice is a Japanese man saying "ha" sped up??
Thought it said "Yoshi's invincible Party" and damn was I disappointed
Hudson Herper LMAO
Same
Same here
I thought it said “Yoshi’s Invisible Party” when I first saw the thumbnail
Lmao I thought that was Connor mimicking the sound at 2:30
Penn Stanton ME TOO LMAO
Penn Stanton Is that what the voice actor actually sounds like?
How are you so sure it wasn't actually me?
SSBM Tutorials it WAS Connor

Thomas Fatzinger invincibility and heavier frame advantage, although the options out of it are more limited
DarkenedHalo115 Not really. DJL/Prince Pivot covers grounded moves OOP.
DarkenedHalo115 what do you mean? He has even more options.
@@trioladej 3 years ago but the fact it's invincible means the attacker still suffers hitlag, but not yoshi, yoshi also doesn't move at all and can jump or do shield actions out of it.

Buu Han and Avalancer.
hey Connor, thanks again for the tutorial! quick question, just wondering if Kira plans on completing his tier list?
2:32 HA
The real question is what if everyone had G&Ws shield.
Westin K. Lightsheild then.

Seeing you guys upload always makes me happy. I feel like I get better and better with every one.
Yoshi is such a dope character
To answer the questions, I'd say not suffering shield stun and being impossible to shield stab are pretty great for Yoshi. Are you a yoshi player video plz.
^ This
Do you like playing the character you first chose when you were 6 years old because he was the cutest?
do you wonder how yoshi's eggs smell?
Dick Trickle I'd imagine it's similar to any other egg.
Dick Trickle probably like ferrous sulfate and fox blood
Ive been wanting to see yoshi videos for a while as I would like to get good as yoshi in melee, nice video !
Some yoshi advice : if you hold a trigger in when you plug your controller in it mskes it so you can only hard shield and this makes parrying much more consistent

Is doing this well known or did you discover this yourself?
Amsa is so fun to watch. It's like witnessing a Super Saiyan in action
This video makes me appreciate aMSa way more
ty
Holy shit yoshis jump in slow motion
I would enjoy a DK video. I feel like his grab game is one of the best in the game. Also, Ding Dong (jump->Cargo up throw->up air kill) works in this game like it does in SSB4, but at later percents.
Nice video! Please make more videos about Yoshi!
This gives me a new found respect for amsa.

Vectorman, aMSa, and Avalancer... with respective colors. Nice reference
Still waiting on the low tiers list...
If Daigo Umehara ever picked up Melee full time, he'd play Yoshi because he can parry.
2:32
ha
Dang, oldschool reference for Fumi the Japanese Yoshi player.
GenoGar Fumi isn't Japanese nor has he stopped. he mains sheik now I believe
It would be like street fighter 3 where everyone can parry everyone's moves. but it's at least nice that one of the not so great characters has something like this to tempt people who might considering taking advantage of it like aMSa to playing with him and actually over coming Yoshi's limitation against others with it.
Please make a how to aMSa with everything yoshi
So could you do waveparrying now?
@MagicScrumpy What if everyone had Yoshi's shield??
Imagine Falcon with parry. Grabs, u-air, d-air and you could probably even sneak some knees in there Kreygasm
Double jump out of shield would make Yoshi nuts
This is fuego
Can you buffer a jump with tap out of Parry? Similar to buffer tap oo hitstun/hitlag.
if everyone had yoshi's shield, the shield pressure meta would completely change
Great tutorial! But I was wondering if you could make a Doc tutorial video?
Please do a "Is Dr. Mario your character?" video! would love to hear your thoughts.
all the ultimate yoshis trying out slippi:
Only Falco should have Yoshi's shield. He's a bird for god's sake.
Hey, i like u just stay active with cool tuts! Would be nice if u consider mid-tiers aswell, like yoshi! The Doc needs some tuts aswell! have a good one, we love ur work!!! greetings
What version of 20xx is this
Welp, this further makes Yoshi be somewhat more like Akuma now :P
Except Yoshi can't Daigo parry, unfortunately. Though, Ryu in SSB4 can't as well
aw yeaah vectorman shout out
Trigger tricking helps a lot as well.
Whatever happened to the tier list video.
oh my god does this mean he's got that down as if he's powersheilding? Like the timing is equally strict?
I think, if every character could "parry", then we would have more respect from the fighting game comunity since that, along with lifebars is the main reason people argue smash is not a fighting game
Thank you
Are you a Doc player sometime in the future?
Fox would be even better with a parry. Just practice parry shine and youre invincible
I will never shield normally with Yoshi again.
does this parry carry over into smash 4? because if so, ryu vs yoshi would be Very interesting
Nope, smash 4 and brawl removed all interesting tech. It's in 64 though.
Yoshi would be great if he just had a better recovery. He's fun to use, has cool tech and is cute but I just fucking suck at getting back to the stage
imagine marth with yoshi's parry
Can you guys do a Mewtwo tutorial?
Is this the same in 64?
TheGameBoyUltimate Do i even need to answer
frames might be different, but honestly the concept is the same (i never looked into the frames) in fact it was someone from the 64 community that brought up the info for yoshi's parry. Oh and it's eaiser there too because in 64 there is no analog press (no light shield) so it becomes easier to do.
i know it is, i just know that it works a bit different. should have phrased this differently, like "how is it different, if it is?"
レヨメエ actually, in 64, parrying is a 4 frame window and there is powershield or problem with entering shield or anything else so you'll always get it if you hit that 4 frame window, and he can jump oos anyways
Please do how to practice pikachu
If every one had a parry the game would be called melee: third strike
If everyone had yoshis shield, sheik would probably be mid tier
Avalancer
I wouldn't play melee if everyone had Yoshis shield
Thank you for the Eggcellent tutorial!
Please kill me
Can you please make smash 4 tutorials
20-Eggs-Eggs
*waiting for kirby tutorials*
So does yoshi just lose to Fox down air?
yes
George C Not exactly. Just Yoshi's Parry will lose to Fox D-air, but Parry PerfectWavedash beats Fox D-air
fox can still CC most of yoshi's attacks and if he lands a dair fox can do waveshine JC usmash which kills yoshi at 86% without DI, and yes i tested this ingame. you can test it yourself and you will get the same result.
Also, uthrow -> uair kills at 82%
"Pivot parry". Oh man.
Daigo's melee main
Make more videos
Yoshi SSS tier. So broken omg
i had no idea
Are you a dr mario main plz
shoutouts to avalancer lol
Please make a "Are you a Mario/Dr. Mario" player?
ok but fo real youre gonna confuse people by saying stuff like "the pre-shielding animation" since people are already running around thinking you can't block on frame 1
edit: if everyone had the same shield as yoshi i would rather play brawl or even smash 4
If yoshi could just jump out of shield he would be much better.
damn, aMSa is good
NNnNow
FIGHT A NEW RIVAL
*I am AMSA now*
Does AmSa knows this?
jigglypuff with parry would be ridic
I will amswer to the Questions of the video
1. Yoshi's shield is decent but very laggy
2.Yes he defenitly be better with a normal shield
3. I don't know but the game will be much slower with no perfect shield time perfect inputs
Fun is chum
Where's kira
hes dead
@TheGameBoyUltimate lol I'd guess no
Brain damage
"HA"
Amsa is god
Yoshi has the best shield in all the Smash games in my opinion. You can't even get shield poke.
I am terrible at smash or any fighting game
too hard... :/
winfield how is this even remotely hard
a joke
winfield Oh, lmao
Practice on peach turnips
get
I thought i was playing Melee, not Cuphead (this is just a joke)
The fuck is wrong with this comment section? Half of them aren't even relevant to the video at all
This is so old
Papa is better
Still not Top Tier
so pretty much this character sucks, they all do, except fox of course
Yes. Totally. /s
StevenMegaSandwich lol shut the fuck up, I was being sarcastic
