1 year of picking up trash is too light. Those kids need to spend 1 year of unpaid employment (as community service) working in waste management companies. That includes picking up trash, and riding shotgun in trash trucks only to help out with dirtiest tasks such as cleaning out clogged trash in the gears.

The fish and wildlife guy forgot to mention how seabirds and other animals are affected by human trash. I helped rescue a sandhill crane who had gotten a rubber ring wedged on his beak and he could not open it to eat. It took several days to rescue him, as he was of course wary of people. He didn't eat that whole time. Just months later, I rescued a great blue heron who had landscaping fabric tightly wrapped around his beak. There are millions upon millions of animals who suffer just because humans produce mountains of garbage and don't dispose of it properly. Glad to see there's a $50,000 fine.
I completely agree with you. I once saw a video of a baby dolphin caught up in discarded fishing net and it was one of the most heart breaking things I have ever seen.
