Kangaskhan: "Okay, I'll see you at the finish line girls, have fun!" *Sprints off into the distance* Blissey: *Bounces forward with determination* Chansey: *Trips at the starting line*
You're right about chansey and blissey being insane for nuzlockes. They're so good people usually ban them, as they trivialize every single special attacker
Blissey will be more interesting to revisit in Emerald because you get both Calm Mind and reliable special options. (Also, Diggersby without Huge Power will feel kinda hollow...)
Another absoloute banger Scott, thank you for suffering through Chansey so we don't have to. One thing I want to nitpick is a bit of a contradiction you seem to be making about HM users. Back at the Electrode faint you mentioned how you didn't want to mod in an instant blackout for when you lose your solo mon because making your HM users also have to faint should be part of a disadvantage for blacking out. However you then later mention that you've modded it so the AI only sees your solo mon so Forretress will use Explosion because you don't want your HM users affecting the battle. So I guess it's just a little confusing about whether your HM users SHOULD affect the solo playthrough or not in these ways. End of the day it's your rules and I'm going to enjoy watching your content regardless so don't worry too much about this minor gripe and please just keep up with your fantastic work as always!
You're welcome! Just to clarify my thinking around the HM users, here are 5 scenarios. 1. HM user impacts AI move choice in battle (Forretress explosion) 2. HM user allows the player to continue with the run (Electrode win) 3. HM user must faint for the player to blackout (theoretical example) 4. HM user is brought into battle by Roar or Whirlwind 5. HM user is brought into battle by Roar or Whirlwind and the player's mon had accuracy drops, negative stat changes, or volatile status conditions The key to all of this is that the HM user should only contribute within the overworld. Nagivation convenience - Fly OR Story completion - Cut,Surf,Strength,Whirlpool,Waterfall In scenario 1 the HM user is impacting the battle positively by discouraging the AI from choosing moves that would be difficult for the solo-mon to deal with. Either the player must deposit the HM users to avoid this affect, or the AI should just know that the player is only using a single Pokemon. I choose to take the modification here because it facilitates faster editing and a more seemless play/stream experience. In scenario 2 the HM user is impacting the progress in the game because it allows the solo-mon to faint but still clear a given objective. This means the HM user is contributing positively to the outcome of a battle. In scenario 3 the HM user is not positively impacting the outcome of the run. It is negatively impacting time and so this is just an inconvenience. Perhaps the player should plan for this type of situation by depositing the HM user to avoid fainting time if blackouts of this category are expected. In scenario 4 I mandate that the player must switch the HM user for the solo mon. The simple intention is that the solo-mon loses a turn and potentially takes 1 turn of free damage as a result. The solo-mon may also lose positive stat changes as a result of the Roar/Whirlwind. This scenario happens frequently in generation 3 and in most cases it it is a negative scenario having to send the solo mon back in. In scenario 5 accuracy drops, negative stat changes, and volatile status conditions are removed. I will never abuse this to get a win - that is against the purpose of these challenges. I believe my methodology catches this issue nicely. Forcing 2 runs means that I will not be able to win because of Roar 2 times in at the same trainer because the optimization process will force me away from relying on this strategically. So I will admit this is a flaw with my approach, but it is only so locally within a single run, not globally in the context of my tierlist. Perhaps in 2025 I will mandate a reset in the scenario that Roar/Whirlwind positively impacts the solo-mon's battle.
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon cheers for taking the time to indulge my questioning with such a thorough explanation of your methodology! I guess at the end of the day, HM users are just another part of earlier gen pokemon jank that you have to consider when planning a run, and there's probably no real perfect solution to them other than completely removing the need for HM users via modded items or something similar. I know a few rom hacks implement this kind of feature and while I'm sure that would make solo running a lot simpler, it would also take away that genuine vanilla playthrough feeling that you have strived so hard to preserve with all your runs. Thanks again for the reply and for all the effort you and your team are putting in. Looking forward to more Daily December tomorrow!
15:14 And then there's me. Just before Christmas 2003, I was sitting in Minneapolis International Airport, playing Crystal while waiting for my flight, and I got three 7-7-7 jackpots in a row. The only trip I ever took by plane was a memorable one.
Your Curse + Return strat might not be the the most exciting idea, but that's only because it keeps working. It's a slow option so if pokes have a chance using someone else we know you'll explore it. Keep up the good work.
Scott.... Clearly, Khangaskhan clearly does so well in solo playthroughs because nobody wants to hit a single mother or dad. They've got enough on their plate as it is.
dark fact: Kangaskhan is found in RockTunnel in GSC, and the ONLY pokemon that can also be found there that shares its egg group is the Cubone line (which is another pokemon that can't be found there at night in Gen2 which appears in the basegame with a set rate) gives a WHOLE new take on the "cubone's mother" in Gen1's radio tower
Normal types are dominant, if they have stats to back it up, chansey/blissey don't, tanking special hits is not what you want to do in-game. Before watching, i'll say Kanga wins comfortably.
Normal Type is considred to be by at least some people the strongest Type overall in competitive outside of the broken pokemon. A Water type Move + a Normal type move hits everything neutrally in Gen 2 as well.
I love the selection you made this December, I've always loved normal type pokemon. It's too bad they aren't as useful as they used to be nowadays in the main games . Awesome videos as always. See ya !
Even eight year old me back in Red knew that throwing a rock was a terrible choice in the Safari Zone and logically so too would be the bait. Sometimes the caveman answer of just throw another ball is actually the galaxy brain conclusion. Trust yer gut. Always!
When I was a kid, I thought rocks and bait were supposed to synergize: throw bait to get Pokemon to stay so you have the time to throw rocks to make them easier to catch and the end-result should be easier than just throwing balls. But no, apparantly some smooth brain decided that bait and rocks do the exact opposite of each other so if you throw bait you're punished with having a far more difficult time to catch and if you throw a rock you're punished with having far less time to catch, so WTF's the point then? They really made sure that the Safari Zone's as awful as possible... IIRC, I did discover that bait and rock problem when I was still a kid, but I think I believed there was a difference in effect (something like, just using random numbers as an example, their beneficial effect x2 but their negative effect x0.9). But nope, bait reduces catch chance equally as much as rocks raise them, and rock reduces battle time as much as bait raises it... WHY!? How does that make sense???
I'm recovering from surgery and I’m in a lot of pain and sore everywhere. But I just wanted to say having videos of yours to binge is helping a lot. Thank you so much, Scott Kidney stones if you're curious.
Hey Scott, for future reference since you mentioned it, you don't actually need to complete Radio Tower before Blackthorn- The Gym is blocked off until after Radio Tower, but Ice Path and everything else in Blackthorn (like the move deleter) are accessible after you beat 7 gyms.
I meant to say this in the past couple videos, but I like the backgrounds that you use behind the overlay and how they are relevant to the Pokemon, like how in the Miltank Crystal video, Miltank's background was an open field.
Did you just say at 4:08 that rock smash is a special move??! I may have been a fan for years and love your content, but what!!? Truly a slip of the tongue for the ages
15:49 Hey Scott, just wondering if you've banned the use of the Voltorb Flip solver, or have ever heard of it? It's similar to the lucky slot machine idea, but I think would have much more success if it's allowed in your runs
Its funny how ridiculously rare it is to see a route 11-15 mention on this channel. The whole southeastern side of Kanto is so rarely tread in your runs outside of stopping to grab return or swift on route 12. Like the amount of times they've gotten a mention has to be less than a dozen over every video you've ever done.
If I were making a romhack of either RBY or FRLG I would figure out a way to make those routes more valuable to traverse, such as putting good TMs out there
@1:02:38 how did you get the+2 attack? Edit: Hitmonlee used swagger which gave blissey such good ranges, though it happens so infrequently that utilizing a frame or 2 to highlight it would have been appreciated since looking at grayed out movesets on mobile is a bit difficult.
Also Snorlax is s slow bulky mon as well, and Kangaskan is somewhat of a counterpart to Tauros, so I feel it sould have been switched. A vs between Snorlax, Chansei and Blissey, and one between Tauros, Kangaskan, and Miltank.
I caught a chansey in a pokemon blue randomizer nuzlocke years ago...then i got a randomized tm (originally water gun) that turned into amnesia. It. Was. Legendary...
Do you think there are any mons that have such a poor move pool that it would be optimal to breed another mon with extra moves in-game? That would be hilarious. XD
19:24 - prefer if Blissey doesn't get walled later into the game I guess you could always STEEL a special move by that point, could be metal also an interesting quirk at 40:46 - if you do black out and get sent to the pokemon centre, do you still progress as normal (like as a NOT solo-challenge)? or is the electrode undefeated when you return could be an interesting "well, as long as it gets KO'd" rule that gets applied for the format
It reminds me of that weird let's play I watched a while ago. It had the mew glitch but against a pokémon with 40 special (I think it was either the Rocket's Drowsee or a Butterfree on route 6) which pulled out chansey. She was named Chansilla because the streamer though the Pokemon Center's Chanseys were chairs, became the MVP of that let's play and an expert on BM with metronome (using the middle finger for that according to them) and using transform on the rival's jolteon. I think some of the people here saw that back in the day, or at the very least the compilation. Is ironic though, I'm following this channel who puts long videos, but stopped following that channel who also put long videos. Maybe because those from there had too much filler and he is also just unbearable when talking about politics or religion, which did too often lately and he has less knowledge on those topics than he believes.
I had an idea for a possibly interesting text case for you, run Mewtwo in Yellow but do it several times with each different growth rates, just to see how big of a deal the growth rate alone effects things, other pokemon would be equally fine, i just figure Mewtwo would be the quickest to do this with so hopefully reduce any labor costs for such a demestration
I do like the idea of showcasing growth rates by running the same pokemon at different rates. Interestingly, the pokemon you select can yield starkly differing results. Mewtwo will barely care about its growth rate, while a mid tier pokemon would prefer medium-slow and something bad like pidgey would be best off with the fast growth rate.
@@ZealousPawnI’ve been saying it for a while, but I actually think Slow is best under specific conditions involving having all tools needed to win without overlleveling since every level up uses up extra text in battle. I just wonder if Scott is too biased towards leveling up past his problems (at least in games like Platinum, which is why I find those runs boring to watch).
@@skeetermania3202 I think those specific conditions would be outside the scope of at least any gen1 solo run. Mewtwo would prefer the medium-slow growth rate, he’s just not hurt too bad by having a slow growth rate
Scott: "I don't want my HM users impacting the fights" Also Scott: *refuses to box HM users, trapping the occasional enemy pokemon into using low-prio moves that force switches, getting to act first against pokemon that are sometimes faster*
easiest way to catch them in Red/Blue was to visit the old man in Viridian City, go into the Safari zone, then head on over to Cinnabar where you'd normally catch Missingno. That spot will pull data from the last place you encountered a pokemon.
As others commenters have done, I am betting on Kangaskhan but I don't think Chansey or Blissey will do poorly. The only place I really see them struggling at is Chuck's gym and not even because of Chuck himself but the fighting type tag team instead
I fondly remember getting an early Kangaskhan in Heart Gold due to the Pokewalker, and she was quite good, though HGSS having gen 4 mechanics has interesting consequences. I'm not sure, reading the tea leaves, if HGSS or Black/White is going to be the next game added to the rotation but I kind of hope it's HGSS both for chronology and comparing results between Crystal and HGSS for certain Pokemon, as well as discussing the difference in effective strategies.
For all who has ADHD:The "race format" Scott is using is just by default and coherence use with all his other videos. There is not any kind of possible competition in this video. Thank you for your time.
I think you probably lose time with some pokemon holding leftovers too often. Some mons just loose time to text because they wouldnt die. For example with kangaskhan
hey Scott just a question regarding the red Gyarados. is there a distinction between your allowance of using a Poké Doll against the Pokémon Tower Marowak in Yellow Version and not using one here? I don’t personally see issue rules wise for the sake of the challenge but just thought it could be an option for weaker Pokémon in future playthroughs if you don’t see a contradiction upon consideration. great video as always! I like the grouping of these three, the Chansey line working in Pokémon centres always gave a maternal feel for them to me so having them with Kanghaskan is so fitting
For battles where paralysis/sleep is a problem, have you ever thought about pre-poisoning your Pokémon so they can’t use those moves? You’re put on a timer but at least you’re guaranteed to be able to move, and you won’t lose health on turns you KO.
Pre-poisoning for a battle where Toxic is used would also be funny, especially in conjunction with Rest on the moveset. the Toxic lover can't use its move, you kill it, then you Rest.
For Blissey and Chansey, the Totodile team should be the hardest since it gets the strongest physical moves. I think you should’ve taken that into consideration.
I think move pool might be more important than typing, as that what links the bug and normal S tier Pokémon. It just so happens that normal types all happen to have a really good moves
Not sure if you mentioned it in the video but when you face a trainer with a full team the attack stat of the final pokemon is the wrong colour. Not a nitpick, love the vids, i just know how much you like things to be perfect.
On the thirteenth day of December, Scott's Thoughts gave to me: Three motherly pokemon The Giants of Gen One A deer and a giraffe The two pink blob matchup The Anubis dog herself A big cuddly boy in Kanto Two Airlane Dragon Pokemon Three Bulky Normal Types The Gen I Middle Stages An OP Eevee in Yellow An OP Pikachu in Yellow A slow level up group ice tree And the slowest hitmon brother
This is the reason why I've been bored with some of the recent vs runs. thematically pairing them up doesn't do much, if it's clear from the start who's gonna be better. feels like a waste of time for me to watch all the way through, I might as well skim over the follow up results
The way I see it is that he needs to do a few really bad pokemon and adds a good pokemon in the video to add a "fun" run to prevent getting bodied over and over feeling stale.
Don't think this is an actual VS video in find out who is best more of "I have alot of pokemon to get through in Crystal lets group some of them up thematically to cut down on total number of video" type video
I propose a slowpoke line vs challenge for Crystal, slowpoke vs slowbro, vs slowking. Would be interesting to see which performs better in crystal version
You should consider running pure special attackers as female. They don't need the attack Stat and it makes confusion damage less punishing. Espeon, for example, would be great to consider to run as a female
At least economical Blissey and Chansey are the lone winners no other Pokemon gives you that amount of HP healed by a Full Restore and make every Pokedollar spent on a Full Restore count
The only way I got them in gen 1 was to do the safari zone glitch. Where after you went to the zone, you'd fly to viridian talk to the old man that teaches you how to catch pokemon then go the cinnabar and surf the east coast.
Ah yes Chansey needs to win with chance hence why I gave it the name as Chance Time. In Gen 5 is when this mon ascends thanks to Eviolite along with its genderless kin Porygon 2
Id imagine Chansey should be able to beat Steven in emerald with a set of: Defense Curl Rest Sleep Talk Seismic Toss Shame there is no Seismic Toss in Crystal Edit: looked it up and the tutor is in the battle frontier, so thats a shame
But Scott, why didn't you use eviolite on Chansey ? :O ... ... Comments are good for the youtube algorithm. More seriously, "a backport of new gens items in gen 2" could be a fun vid/series.
It just feels bad that blissey or chansey can't learn the elemental punchs, it would be more decent if they could. I mean, look at their arms, they should be able to learn it if quagsire/wooper can learn ice punch
On the thirteenth day of Christmas, Scott’s Thoughts gave to me… Thirteen rare Normal girls, Twelve bear v bull fights, Eleven Gen 1 backports, Ten pounds per pink puff, Nine resists when evolved, Eight Belly Drum badges, Seven years with Psywave, Six slow squad solos, Five starter flings! Four Eevee runs, Three years post redo, Two Grass/Ice types, And a Hitmontop in Gen 3!
No IMHO all 3 of them SUCK and for a starter Chikora in Crystal still SUCKS and I prefer NORMAL types that don't use the CRAPPY Safari Zone for too bad most of those Normal types SUCK.
I love how this is basically Kangaskhan vs Blissey + Blissey’s teenage daughter. Like both Pokémon decided to take their child to work day.
Never talk to me or my daughter ever again.
I just realized this is a showdown between moms.

Scott: "I don't want my HM users impacting the fights"
Also Scott: *refuses to box HM users, trapping the occasional enemy pokemon into using low-prio moves that force switches, getting to act first against pokemon that are sometimes faster*
Boxing HM users is annoying and it’s usually just a time loss with no impact to the playthrough
easiest way to catch them in Red/Blue was to visit the old man in Viridian City, go into the Safari zone, then head on over to Cinnabar where you'd normally catch Missingno.
For example with kangaskhan
with that said maybe you are just being safer in first play throughs
hey Scott just a question regarding the red Gyarados. is there a distinction between your allowance of using a Poké Doll against the Pokémon Tower Marowak in Yellow Version and not using one here? I don’t personally see issue rules wise for the sake of the challenge but just thought it could be an option for weaker Pokémon in future playthroughs if you don’t see a contradiction upon consideration.
great video as always! I like the grouping of these three, the Chansey line working in Pokémon centres always gave a maternal feel for them to me so having them with Kanghaskan is so fitting
1:22:32 Fun fact: Chansey's Japanese name is Lucky.
Didn't use Chansey in Gen 1/2, but used it in a FireRed nuzlocke to Toxic stall the Elite Four
He has been known to use this strategy against koga in Yellow occasionally.
1:14:19 not cheating because Chancey's stats allow it to pp stall when other mons would not be able to do so.
What could've been a "Mother's Day" run instead being released on Friday The 13th is wildly ironic for some people 💀💀💀
For Blissey and Chansey, the Totodile team should be the hardest since it gets the strongest physical moves. I think you should’ve taken that into consideration.
The infamous curse Chansey was allegedly used in GSC UU.
Chansey line are better in gen 3 where they can use tms
So, ima put my money on Kangaskhan: _Not only cause of my base level Gen 1 Competitive Knowledge but _*_Moskau is a bop!_*
Tbh i think in games with required hms, them preventing a blackout against a wild exploding pokemon seems fair to me. Youre expected to have them
I think move pool might be more important than typing, as that what links the bug and normal S tier Pokémon. It just so happens that normal types all happen to have a really good moves
Especially in Gen2. See my Elekid video and Raikou video from last year for more proof!
@ that’s actually part of why I think that. Been watching your videos for about two years now
Holy molly, the Electrode inception
Not sure if you mentioned it in the video but when you face a trainer with a full team the attack stat of the final pokemon is the wrong colour. Not a nitpick, love the vids, i just know how much you like things to be perfect.
Dang, I'm surprised Blissey doesn't get a single one of the elemental punches... It has arms and looks vaguely "magical"...
On the thirteenth day of December, Scott's Thoughts gave to me:
Three motherly pokemon
The Giants of Gen One
A deer and a giraffe
The two pink blob matchup
The Anubis dog herself
A big cuddly boy in Kanto
Two Airlane Dragon Pokemon
Three Bulky Normal Types
The Gen I Middle Stages
An OP Eevee in Yellow
An OP Pikachu in Yellow
A slow level up group ice tree
And the slowest hitmon brother
Blissey looks like a fusion of Chansey and nurse Joy.
Still not sure why this is a Vs Video, it seems fairly obvious that Kangaskhan > Blissey > Chansey. Maybe I'll end up being surprised, though!
Actually, I did use Kangaskhan while playing Gen 1.. I just evolved my Missingno. :)
It’s the battle of the matrons!
I propose a slowpoke line vs challenge for Crystal, slowpoke vs slowbro, vs slowking. Would be interesting to see which performs better in crystal version
I think a vs between chansey and shuckle could've been more interesting than tacking on chansey here. High HP low defense, vs low HP high defenses
You should consider running pure special attackers as female. They don't need the attack Stat and it makes confusion damage less punishing.
Espeon, for example, would be great to consider to run as a female
Just realized I can get my exercises in the Comercial breaks! Set of 25 squats! Yay
Kanghaskhan is a queen it's nice to see it at the top.
Zangoose is gonna destroy Gen 2
At least economical Blissey and Chansey are the lone winners no other Pokemon gives you that amount of HP healed by a Full Restore and make every Pokedollar spent on a Full Restore count
The only way I got them in gen 1 was to do the safari zone glitch. Where after you went to the zone, you'd fly to viridian talk to the old man that teaches you how to catch pokemon then go the cinnabar and surf the east coast.
I always forget what's the condition for a pokemon to get special defense batch boost. But i guess these eggs don't need it.
Flinch/Confusion/Attract strats is so evil. That poor Snorlax.
I caught a Chansey in a red Nuzlock, but it was a East Coast Cinnabar Surf Glitch.
Ah yes Chansey needs to win with chance hence why I gave it the name as Chance Time. In Gen 5 is when this mon ascends thanks to Eviolite along with its genderless kin Porygon 2
Id imagine Chansey should be able to beat Steven in emerald with a set of:
Defense Curl
Rest
Sleep Talk
Seismic Toss
Shame there is no Seismic Toss in Crystal
Edit: looked it up and the tutor is in the battle frontier, so thats a shame
Just noticed your overlay has Karate Chop auto-critting, which isn't necessarily true in Gen 2.
If you want to make Chansey interesting compared to Blissey, you could backport Eviolite or give it a Lucky Punch.
But Scott, why didn't you use eviolite on Chansey ? :O
...
...
Comments are good for the youtube algorithm.
More seriously, "a backport of new gens items in gen 2" could be a fun vid/series.
I can see the attraction to kangaskan
Poor Blissey, paralyzed/cursed/disabled at once against the final rival in the first run lol
It just feels bad that blissey or chansey can't learn the elemental punchs, it would be more decent if they could. I mean, look at their arms, they should be able to learn it if quagsire/wooper can learn ice punch
9:35 While I wish this game included the Hoenn region, I think you're confusing which gen this is lol
As well as a Poliwag line vs challenge, Poliwag, vs Poliwhirl, vs poliwrath, vs politoed
The girl boss episode? Lets go
I was thinking, why not yolo metronome Blissey ... but... not available in Gen2
I am so looking forward to seeing three female Pokémon race through the Johto region.
For pokemon that could evolve, would it be worth it to get an everstone and hold that to try and save time while training?
although you've already done shuckle, chancy vs shuckle.
12:42 "135."
Read: "One hundred and thirty."
Does Diggersby get Pure Power, or is this a powered down Diggersby?
Is Khan holding the cub on her shoulder? (back sprite)
dudunsparce back port when though?
Shame Eviolite isn't until Generation 5, eh?
We gotta see an eviolite modded in for Chansey. That’s the real versus
The Pouch trio
Ok, I'm in
On the thirteenth day of Christmas, Scott’s Thoughts gave to me…
Thirteen rare Normal girls,
Twelve bear v bull fights,
Eleven Gen 1 backports,
Ten pounds per pink puff,
Nine resists when evolved,
Eight Belly Drum badges,
Seven years with Psywave,
Six slow squad solos,
Five starter flings!
Four Eevee runs,
Three years post redo,
Two Grass/Ice types,
And a Hitmontop in Gen 3!
No IMHO all 3 of them SUCK and for a starter Chikora in Crystal still SUCKS and I prefer NORMAL types that don't use the CRAPPY Safari Zone for too bad most of those Normal types SUCK.
