Hey John! When I saw your first video on oak's challenge, I was very interested in taking on the challenge myself. After watching your video, I cracked open my pokemon emerald version and got to work. I really enjoy seeing you run through oak's challenge and it makes sense that the next stop for this series is generation 3. However, I would strongly recommend that you DO NOT do the challenge for gen 3. I repeat, DO NOT run oak's challenge for generation 3. If there was one word I could say that could deter you from trying it, it would be EXPLOUD. Without any speed hacks, without a lucky egg, without any cheats, it takes a VERY long time to fill out as much of the generation 3 pokedex as possible before you even face roxanne. I personally, love this content and seeing new things I can do to challenge myself when playing pokemon, but save yourself the heartache and quit while you're ahead.
To be fair, much of the time that was spent active was enjoyed, and I'm almost certain a large chunk of the time recorded by the game file was just because he left it open while he was away or something along those lines. It's still a fun game to play through, even if you're doing it to make a video. He essentially just did the basic goal of a lot of young kids when they first played a Pokemon game, except he recorded it. Still, it's a lot effort and it's impressive he went through it all. But, it's not really "work" if you're having fun doing it, is it? (With the exception of the mindless grinding to evolve pokemon you wouldnt actually use. That shit takes forever and is boring af in the older games.)
Because when you're a kid, it's harder to discern between real gaming info and trolling. My brother thought you could get the Triforce in OoT for YEARS because HTLOZ had an April Fool's article about it.
I’m FINALLY done with this. I started on the day you uploaded and I’m done today, 257 days later. My IGT is 227:34, which is slightly better than yours. I’m really glad you make these videos, because I must’ve watched this one at least a dozen times while grinding, plus it served as a guide. 10/10 amazing experience
Magan Hassan I’m 35-40 hours in with moon, but having to constantly check my pick-up Squad really kills my flow sometimes. I’m currently mega into gen 4 shiny hunting, but I plan to continue moon soon. Probably going to do a living Dex, even. I’m planning on making a 100% complete living Dex in every generation 4-7, so that’s a Nice way to kick of gen 7
Xolotl Nephthys I followed the video johnstone made. I finalized at 199, so No. If you’re talking about moon, I’m still in the very first section so please enlighten me on this method so I can use it later
For those who noticed 199 caught pokemon + 51 unattainable pokemon = 250, not the 251 pokemon in the pokedex, kingdra was the missing one, and belongs in the "needs trading" section :)
I did the same, but only because I used trainer/fly glitch in Blue version to nab one off a biker on Cycling road. I traded it to a Gold cartridge, then I traded it to my Crystal when I started a new game. Those games, I think, are easier than Gen 1, but Dragonite for the whole game makes it pitifully easy.
Finally got around to watching this. This was awesome, and the effort truly shows!!! The level scaling of wild Pokemon is almost nonexistent in these games and really makes this challenge sound like a nightmare - it's kind of crazy how long the wild Pokemon are around level 17 at most. I can't even imagine how annoying training that Dratini must have been! Congrats on the shiny Gastly, too! I will say in Shiny Gengar's defense, it definitely looks its coolest in its Gen 2 sprites before becoming the dull shiny we know of today. Also, how limited the elemental evolutionary stones are in this game used to frustrate me to no end when I was a kid before I got Crystal/a link cable! I spent actual hours searching for another way to find them, including going back to the Celadon Dept. Store countless times just to make sure they weren't secretly being sold somewhere there. Really can't believe there aren't enough to get everything that needs one. Keep up the fantastic work!
AbsolBlogsPokemon thanks Matt! I honestly have no idea why they thought giving one was a good idea. I understand that they want you either trade with another person or have more games, but one of each is mindblowingly dumb. It’s even weirder that they barely mention that specific people give them away. Considering you can’t even have every phone number at once, it seems like they just didn’t want anyone to finish it hahah
To be honest I am a big supporter of code is law, so I am fine with using the cloning glitches to get extra evolution items in Gold/Silver. Faster than changing daylight savings time on Crystal over and over again and trading the stones you need. It doesn't give an advantage other than time use.
How much, if at all, did you use the Daycare during this run? You spend a lot of time walking around fishing for encounters, and if you stuffed Dratini into the daycare while grinding all the other pokemon, you could have gotten it at least to where it learns twister to skip those painstaking first few levels. Not to mention when biking around for the beasts later.@@JohnstoneYT
Johnstone I would have used jumpluff to catch the 3 legendary dogs. Since you clearly don't mind grinding for an insane amount of hours, it would have been easier to raise a jumpluff to lvl 40 (which should out speed even raikou), give it sleep powder, headbutt, mega drain, and sweet scent, and buy about 10 x accuracy s. Normally, in my encounters, after waking up, the legendary dogs attack with one of their moves (praying it's not roar). This is how I caught all of them fairly quickly, but I played pokemon crystal on my pokemon stadium 2 with dodrio speed, and I still was annoyed at the time it took. So I can only imagine what you went through.
Not going to lie, I've watched this video about 6 times. I love this challenge and the dedication you took to complete it, top tier content creator man. You even got me back into pokemon, now I'm playing all the games I never played, everything from the ds up to x and y. Keep up the good content man!
I think Gengar's shiny looks alright in the first few games. The distaste towards it now is probably because Gengar's normal colour changed. In Gen 2, particularly Crystal, Gengar's shiny is lighter than its normal colour. From Gen 3 up to Platinum, a pitch black Gengar is definitely noticeable. I think the hatred started around HG/SS after Gengar's normal colour was made darker.
Nah, the shiny was always just fine until Gen 6 and its models. Gengar is one of those Pokémon whose shiny was very negatively impacted by this shift. That said, I'd still take it over the contradictory white of Shiny Mega Gengar. It's a shadow, why is it not black?!

"Where we can knock out a free shiny" No, sir YOU knock out a free shiny. A Shiny is a shiny. If it sparkles I catch. Still kudos for this insane task.
@@rifucurktushwjeydnydheh Most of my shinies were encountered by random luck. However, it is easier to get them in Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee if you can chain catch any pokemon to 33 or higher it become smuch easier to run into one. Best part is, you could chain catch 33 route one Bellsprout or Rattata and then run over to the forest and encounter a shiny Bulbasaur, or Pikachu, etc. The chain doesn't count for just the species you used to chain it.
@@petercross1879 I personally prefer and love gen II over I or III, but I definitley see where you're coming from. Still suffers from the clunky writing and terrible programing of early GF(who, let's be honest, _still_ can't frickin' program.)Even with all the technological leaps and bounds it pulled off for a GBC game it is still so broken its save battery will kill itself inevitably. HGSS is a really good game though.
lol. No. Just because something takes a long time to do doesn't mean it was worth it. Do you know how many satellites are built for years and then get lost because they did a conversion wrong?
Just thought I'd mention this: Johnstone forgot that you can access Dark Cave's north side from the Violet Entrance. All you need is Surf (and optionally Flash).
‘Evolving this only took about x Hours’ I cry inside every time. Amazing work I couldn’t imagine 31 hours grinding a single Pokémon for a video. What dedication! ❤️❤️
mr or miss ThisIsChris i actually grinded my piplup on pokemon diamond to level twenty and since the piplup is nick named dawn jr i can not evolve my starter piplup at all
I've been unbelievably sick and not been able to talk or eat for 3 days, I found your channel and its the only thing thats been able to cheer me up, keep it up man the effort u put in is worth it
I love how happy you sound every time you say "We can actually go a lot farther than you might think" even though it means you'll have so many more pokemon to evolve
but you can get xp AND rare candy to speed this up with the pokewalker, also there is the pickup ability, which means bonus rare candy. so definetly alot faster than 31 hours edit: I take a little part of this. Pokewalker rare candys are only a thing if you have the sightseeing event(ot the sinnoh cave which is nationaldex only) route which isn't normalle obtainable anymore. But still, pickup rare candy grind is probably still easier and alot faster if you consider that rare candy drop rate increases every ten levels. so grindinf a few lv 100 pickup pokemon might seem to be the perfect strat for this challenge and probably every challenge from gen 3 onward for early game training (Yes I just googled everything to make sure I don't talk bullshit)
@@pokedude720 But he isn't talking about the Oak's Challenge, he's joking about the fact that John is purposefully avoiding doing Gen 4 because of how hard it is to complete. Or at least that is how I understood it.
I'm on day 2 of this challenge and currently using Pidgey to level up Rattata against Gastlys in Sprout Tower. I now have way more respect for this challenge
Johnstone as a kid: Oh No Croconaw Whitney: You will never beat me A few years later Johnstone: Dragonite.... Whitney: Welcome back ki... Miltank fainted
Whitney is child’s play (in crystal) with like 15 mins of grinding at the game corner for Abra to trade it for Machop on the 5th floor of the department store in goldenrod city. You even get a grindable patch of grass for the machop just south of the city.
I just came across your channel, watched gen 1 oaks challenge, and upon finishing, in sub box this video pops up.... U da men for following through on that 10k like promise ,even though its 30k now.
I have a tip for catching the beasts: If I remember correctly, any damage you deal to them will remain, meaning that if you hit manage to get them low through putting them to sleep and hitting them, catching them becomes waaaay easier
John: Dratini was the hardest to evolve in any game with these challenges. Deino, Rufflet, Vullaby, Pawniard, and Larvesta in Black and White: Allow us to introduce ourselves.
At least Gen 5 doesn't have the horrific level curve that Gen 2 had 😭. Altho the new exp yield system introduced in Gen 5 does make things a bit fucky wucky
Congrats for pulling this off! After watching your Red and Blue Professor Oak Challenge video I tried and completed Pokémon Omega Ruby. So thanks for giving me something to spend a couple of weeks on
@@dustin3510 I mean, you CAN, it's just bullshit. Though technically, after the original G/S/C elite four (before going on the train) then theres the champion and you've essentially beaten the game. You get the credits just the same
11:45 this man hasn’t even entered the first gym and is already at 58 and a half hours on his game. That’s crazy. Also halfway through the video with 2 out of 16 badges. Nice.
I know this is late and it probably won't ever be read by John, but JEEZ you do some insane challenges! Between you and Absol, I don't know who's more crazy. You doing catch 'em all guides or Absol for leveling pokemon to 100 only off of shiny's. O.o I love the videos though. Always get me into the mood to play pokemon.
Gosh, it always feels so nostalgic to see those old Gold sprites in all of their glory... Sure, Gen II playthroughs are everywhere, but everyone either plays Silver or Crystal. The rainbow birb game deserves more love. Also, you're insane and I'm more than glad to be notified with more of your suffering.
So i found something ... [edit : it may only be true for the gen 4 remakes] It seems there is a bug in the ruins of alph where if you use headbut on the trees on the top left of the map and you can get a lvl26-28 natu (witch is way over level because you can do that before the second badge or just after). The thing is this place has grass with lvl set for later in game, but you can't go into them. So i think all the map is set at lvl 25-28 for all pokemons. They probably didn't thought you would go back with headbut in this map, that's why using it there keep the lvl set for pokemon from grass. The trees can also drop lvl 25+ Pineco (witch would have made the grinding for his evolution faster). Very good job with this very hard challenge anyway ! (sorry for my english, not a native speaker).
It may only be possible in the remakes ! I don't remember if there is trees that you can use headbut on in the second gen games in the ruins of alph. Maybe cristal version but i don't know. I for sure found it in one of the remakes.
Hum ... i found that a long time ago ... Now that i look at the map of all the versions i'm not quite sure witch it was. I remenber finding a lvl 28 natu with a lvl 22 team at the very begining of the game as i was searching for a heracross. It must have been in the remakes, i don't rememnber playing the old ones in a while. I also don't remember playing a romhack. Maybe it was the tree in the top left of the map behind the rock. But it would mean you need the CS ... I'm sorry if i can't help more.
I don't need a Natu, I'm just curious because it's not mentioned online anywhere. Bulbapedia says Natu isn't even available in around that level in trees. Are you sure you're not misremembering?
Well an error is always possible but ... that's a very strange memory to make up. I don't really get what i could have misremembering that way lol If someone could test headbutt on a tree in the top left of the map, behind the breakable rock and check what kind of pokemon you get from there it would clear this up.
I had to come find this video for a specific reason- I started a POC fairly recently for Ruby and went to check on the submitted times spreadsheet on the reddit. This is still the only recorded Gold POC. Well done.
This is amazing. One suggestion if you do continue this: add a counter for Pokemon that aren't available (trade evos and such) on the opposite side of the screen so we can keep up with that as well and see how many total Pokemon there are to any given point in the game.
I started watching this series on a loop as I soft reset for a shiny Cyndaquil, because after three days I accidentally lost the first one I got. I got 31:33 into this video, and another shiny happened. Thank you, John, for the clear good luck this series brought me
Heh, I catch the legendary dogs after getting the 4th badge. By then I have a Gengar in the low 30s. At that point Gengar can easily outrun Suicune, can usually outrun Entei, and then it's mostly luck catching the damn Raikou.
It's this evolution that makes me seriously question if this challenge is even possible on official hardware without resetting the clock. Like, do gen 2 cartridge batteries even last long enough to save up all that money just from farming berries?
You’re an absolute legend, I didn’t even notice the video was almost an hour long. I was so captivated by the grind that I lost track of time watching this.
You can, if you look on the maps on Bulbapedia you can surf in the violet city side to get to the bottom part of the blackthorn side and encounter it there
@@Me-vc2qm Are they actually linked though? I may need to try this myself. Not the full POC, just see if it is all connected. I haven't played gen 2 as much.
For people who want the most pokemon in a playthrough, pay attention when you start your game. If your Trainer ID ends in 7, you will not be able to get heracross until after you beat Whitney, in Route 42. All other numbers will let you get it in Azalea Town.
After seeing the Dratini grind, I can't wait for him to get to the USUM pre-Hala grind. Noibat to 48 and Rufflet/Vullaby to 54 on level 14 Oricorio with exp scaling.
Man, i love ur content. This is the first time that I just desactivate my adblock and watched an entire AD cause i felt that i need to support u somehow. Great job
You can definitely catch remoraid before the point you had in the video. Route between Mahogany and the Ice path, although its luck because you need the fisherman to call you when they're swarming. Unbelievable vid!! Well done!
Actually, wobbuffet is available as soon as you can surf, as you can access a little area of the north entrance area of dark cave by surfing though the south area

I am a simple man, if I see sparkles i catch it.
*Cries in no shiny luck*
@@rifucurktushwjeydnydheh Most of my shinies were encountered by random luck. However, it is easier to get them in Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee if you can chain catch any pokemon to 33 or higher it become smuch easier to run into one. Best part is, you could chain catch 33 route one Bellsprout or Rattata and then run over to the forest and encounter a shiny Bulbasaur, or Pikachu, etc. The chain doesn't count for just the species you used to chain it.
@@rifucurktushwjeydnydheh even though you don't need shiny luck to catch a red gyarados cause it literally is impossible not to get one

You're lucky I love you John.
thought the exact same thing
I love how happy you sound every time you say "We can actually go a lot farther than you might think" even though it means you'll have so many more pokemon to evolve
I just realized that Johnstone said that they were playing on 3DS. Give this person some respect, they did all this without speed-up
Imagine doing this on HeartGold and SoulSilver with the pokewalker. If you have enough Watts you can literally get a Dratini before the first gym.
but you can get xp AND rare candy to speed this up with the pokewalker, also there is the pickup ability, which means bonus rare candy. so definetly alot faster than 31 hours
edit: I take a little part of this. Pokewalker rare candys are only a thing if you have the sightseeing event(ot the sinnoh cave which is nationaldex only) route which isn't normalle obtainable anymore. But still, pickup rare candy grind is probably still easier and alot faster if you consider that rare candy drop rate increases every ten levels. so grindinf a few lv 100 pickup pokemon might seem to be the perfect strat for this challenge and probably every challenge from gen 3 onward for early game training
(Yes I just googled everything to make sure I don't talk bullshit)
Kyle Lundgren Pretty sure watt doesn’t have to be capitalize considering it’s a generic unit of electricity.

So i found something ... [edit : it may only be true for the gen 4 remakes]
It seems there is a bug in the ruins of alph where if you use headbut on the trees on the top left of the map and you can get a lvl26-28 natu (witch is way over level because you can do that before the second badge or just after).
What trees are they? I've been going around headbutting everything and can't find them
Hum ... i found that a long time ago ...
I don't really get what i could have misremembering that way lol
If someone could test headbutt on a tree in the top left of the map, behind the breakable rock and check what kind of pokemon you get from there it would clear this up.

This is amazing. One suggestion if you do continue this: add a counter for Pokemon that aren't available (trade evos and such) on the opposite side of the screen so we can keep up with that as well and see how many total Pokemon there are to any given point in the game.
