The dad was not Bayou’s biological dad and he was killed (when Willie Earl was high, and getting dressed by Bayou in Chicago, he mentioned it). I cried throughout the beginning love story. I saw the self-hatred that the dad had for him, and the jealousy that was building in Willie Earl. The rape scene repulsed me!
I was confused by why LeAnn’s folks left her with grandfather, then came back to get her while dressed in all of this fancy attire. It’s almost like the mom really never loved her; just using.
I now understand why she went to Hattie for midwife help during the delivery. She didn’t want to be found out at the hospital if the baby was darker. Not sure what they would’ve done if the baby or LeAnn died during delivery or if the baby was darker. LeAnn was being very selfish throughout the movie! 😠
I also didn’t understand why Bayou went back. Hattie could’ve come to Chicago and LeAnn could’ve followed shortly.
Also, was the black lady in the beginning Bayou’s mom?? If so, she would maybe be around 80 ish, which wouldn’t make LeAnn as old as she is in the home at the end.
A plus is the that the actors are phenomenal, because I really believed that Bayou and LeAnn were in love and I also can’t stand Willie Earl or his daddy! So, the actors did a great job!

She tried to pass as white and aged white? Yep this was weird to me but I think what they did was make her mentally unstable that she aged really poorly (dementia and alzheimers) because of the multiple traumas from abandonment, incest, rapw, living in fear because she was mixed, and seeing her baby's dad shot and lynched.

The woman in the beginning was Bayou's mom and she was quite old but in good shape because she's used to working. 'Some people' just age a lot faster... they could be 20 yrs younger than another yet look the same age
I said the same thing about her being too old in the nursing home.

It's not all that hard to understand. You have to pay attention to the small detail.
Bayou stated several times in the movie how he always felt like a coward for not confronting his challenges head on. He wanted to go back to rescue the love of his life and be the man that he should've always been.

The movie would have been more interesting if the boys had the same father one came out light the other darker father hates Bayou because he's darker skin which happens alot in black families..buckets story was all over the place we didn't get to see how being raped affected her through out her life her passing as white was out of nowhere I could understand if she lived with her mother and she was preparing her to pass as white..there wasn't enough screentime for the couple for us to see why they were so deep in love Tyler rushed the story so much yet it was a 2 hour movie he needs to hire writers and stop being a know it all..
Yeah that whole thing with her being R@$ped added nothing to the story....and im confused about the whole "There was a murder" thing. It wasnt tied up clear enough for me however i did enjoy the movie.
Idk if this was tp intention, but maybe the film is showing us the effect of intrigue. Just like in john legend's ordinary ppl, "past the infatuation stage" well...they never made it past it. Just stolen moments
Normally black men want dark sons and light skinned daughters. 2 hours is a pretty long time to not be in depth and all over there place. Also, I wonder who was the lady reporting the murder.

Tyler Perry refuses to hire writers. His insistence on being the sole story teller is the reason his material (movies and TV) are crap!
The father pointed out that Bayou had a different biological dad during his rant before leaving the family. Hence the difference in treatment.

But let someone make a movie about us dealing with the real life horror we've had to endure through history now all of a sudden it's too much for some folks' delicate sensibilities and gets labeled "trauma porn"!
@@peters10456170 it’s a cringe term, but VERY accurate. Tyler Perry has an obsession with portraying and seeing black women (especially) and black men suffer in his films. It is a trend that is undeniable in his track record. These characters seldom get happy endings and if they do get some halfway peace, you better believed they had to crawl through H3LL and back to get it.

The sad ending of this movie made no sense.
After watching it again I thought it was rather selfish for Bayou to choose to confront the mob baying for his blood with nothing when he has just been introduced to his new born. His career too has kicked off.
If they wanted his mom they could have killed her a long time ago. They were looking for him not his mom.
He chose to die over his son and threw the promise of taking Leanne with him out the window.
What was Tyler Perry thinking?
I wish Leanne used the son as a bait to hold him down and make him see sense in staying alive...some sort of emotional blackmail.

It was kinda like 'sweet vindication' at the very end of the movie when Johnathan went to see his mom at his house and they don't say anything to each other, Johnathan just sits those letters down in front of LeAnne and walks to the porch and just sits there with the confederate flag flying high and proud on his porch, while he sits and ponders in shock because he finds out that he's a black man. After all this time being raised by racist white men and being instilled with racist views. It made me say 'Ah-huh! You're a black man!'.

@15:10 - TP's characters are one dimensional because HE's one dimensional. He's a very shallow person and it comes across in his movies. He's also colorstruck and obsessed with the same old tropes. Thanks for watching and reviewing guys. I enjoyed it and you saved me some time to watch something else. p.s. - all of Tyler's ideas/movies are a compilation of other popular movies, scenes, and characters. You can always spot it once you know to look for it. And you guys see it!
Why are we still making these types of movies? Reminding white people of the way many of them wish it still was today. I absolutely hate these types of movies.

1. How old was Bayou's mom? That was her that brought the letters to dude. BUT, at the end, dude's mom was Leanne, who had to be younger than Bayou's mom. BUT, Leanne (now an old lady) looked SIGNIFICANTLY old. BUT, Bayou's mom was still living???
2. Did Leanne and her mom REALLY looked like they could pass for white? Armenian, maybe...🤷♂️🤔
3. Leanne in her old age looked EXACTLY like an old white woman. Did her DNA change or something?
4. Why did she not like being called "Bucket"?
5. Was the incest scene necessary?? What purpose did it serve?
6. Where was Leanne's mom when all that was going on?
7. The councilman. Uh, did we have a connection with his character? Did it matter to us when he found out the truth?
8. What happened to Bayou's brother?
Those questions just popped into my head. I'm sure I'll have more...

This movie was all over the place and I felt nothing after it finished.
As you both said, it could have been a more focused and smaller story. It could have been about Leanne and her trying to pass as a white woman but her also trying to deal with her affection for this black man who she left behind. Instead, there was this musical career thrown in.
We never got to learn why Leanne's husband is so mean to her. There were very few scenes with her and her husband. Plus Leanne does not look like a white woman. Her mum looks even more mixed than Leanne does.
What was the point of the quick scene with the granddad and Leanne? It was dropped and never mentioned again. It was just thrown in. We don't see Leanne tell anyone about what happened or maybe see her haunted by it years later.
I never felt like the lead characters were in love. They did not show this great love story. It almost felt like a light version of 'The Notebook' at some points.
It was like Tyler Perry had this dated script sitting around and all these other slavery and Jim Crow movies came out, but he never reworked his story to make it something special.
It felt like he was trying to take a little something from past movies and mix it all together. A little something from 'The color purple' and 'Roots'.
She looks obviously mixed to us today because mixed people have been around for years at this point. But back then, “mixed” was not a common look. So yes, a lot of black and mixed people were able to easily get by simply being fair skinned with straightened hair.

I got a lot of "Ragtime" vibes from it as well. The main actor favors Howard Rollins, too.
The film was not a developed enough. The story is effective if told correctly and developed over time. You were left with way too many questions and the ending sucked. The lynching was triggering for me but the story was not developed enough for the emotion that should have been felt
It's good that you started with what you liked about this movie. The trailer gave me those "Great gowns. Beautiful gowns." vibes 😂After listening to your review, it sounds like the trailer was more cohesive than the finished product.
Can you imagine taking 27 yrs. to make a movie only for it to be another project with a great cast, poor writing, and Tyler's usual ingredients of colorism and Black pain? 27 years and it took that long to get the wigs together?!🤣Anyway, thank you for your thoughts on this busy flick + the Jackée Harry parody recommendation!!

@@stevonwhite8933True, colorism is relevant for this time period in the movie. However when it comes to Tyler's projects that preceded this one, the colorism has been perpetuated to a point where it's expected; dark skin men = villain, light skin men = saviors.
You guys should take another look at the movie. There are a lot of factual errors in your initial analysis, I'm not saying it's all that. On the other hand, I think it's better than you've made it appear. Spoiler: I've never seen anything Perry has done and approached "Jazzman" with some caution. Finally, yes it could've have been better.
Joshua Boon is a dynamic Theater Actor.
I can't wait until he gets a Leading Man Part worthy of his talents.
Tyler Perry tried to do his version of The Color Purple…Even some of the plot points.
I want to support him but can’t because he CONSISTENTLY puts out horrible movies and tv shows. If he hired writers and producers I know that his projects could be worth watching.
Throw Imitation of Life and every 90’s HBO tv movie in a blender and you get Tyler Perry’s A Jazzman’s Blues

Yesssss lmaooooo. Thought it would have been dramatic, I felt nothing. But it was to be expected, the build up was clear. I mean, he was being stupid and Bucket was stupid as well, not sure how they had such a deep love that was worth dying for and him trying to talk to the mob, what would that accomplish ???????
I was actually relieved they didn't show it actually happen.
I agree that Bayou and Willie Earl's subplot was focused on a bit too much. I think that maybe Perry's inclusion of the musical career may have been to show that he was still able to find happiness in his life despite having his first love taken away from him., however I think that the movie could've benefitted it that storyline was focused on less and more on Leanne's struggle of passing as a white woman. I also think it would have been beneficial to the storyline if they would've showed the aftermath of Johnathan's discovery of the truth about his parents. How he did change as a person after discovering that he's black after living his life as a wildly racist "white" man? Would his views change on affirmative action?
I enjoyed watching the movie, but I do think that there were several missed opportunities.

Willie Earl was the reason he got killed so I think it was necessary. He wanted to focus on how ostrasized Bayou felt which is why he clung so much to LeAnn. LeAnn was also mistreated and unloved by her mom who dropped her off with a man she knew was a child molester because if he woudl violate his own grandaughter he probably did it to the mom too.
And the ending with Johnathan sitting on the porch reminded me of the Dave Chapelle skit when the racist blind man didn’t know he was black until someone finally told him.
Weak, tired ending! He just refuses to get good writers.
I skimmed through the movie in about ten minutes. I saw all I needed. I wish Tyler would just hand his ideas over to expereinced screen writers and directors and just be the bag man for his production company. Tyler has good ideas for beginnings and endings, everything in the middle he can't get straight.
I agree…this movie was kinda all over the place, explained little and felt like Tyler stole bits and pieces from several past movies…from the Color Purple to Miss Jane Pittman to the real story of Emmitt Till…the baby wasn’t real when it was born, it was a black doll (look closely) and the scene at the end when he was hung was very troubling and also didn’t look realistic. Tyler needs to start letting someone else write. He basically stole from every black slavery movie I’ve ever seen.
Exactly that’s one thing i don’t like about Tyler he wants to be the only writer on all of his work smh. He’s writing sometimes causes great actors to be bad actors

The movie was a big fail and underdeveloped. I was expecting a Jazz man blues and got a Jazz man snooze. I wanted to see the plight of the lead character and his struggles in his music career.
Bayou pissed me off so much.. just kept being dumb this entire film.. we see why his dad and brother hated him
Tyler's problem is that he doesn't get anyone to review what he writes and that's why his movies are all over the place. He doesn't know how to maintain a particular tone throughout. It's always the same problem in all his pictures. And why is it that every time someone tells a story about blacks in the past that every story is a tragedy caused by racism or have women who are victimized and raped? Can't we tell interesting stories or dramas about other experiences?
Spot on commentary! I just watched it and was so frustrated throughout. This film had so much potential but it felt like he shot the first or second draft of the script. Why oh why doesn't Tyler Perry go to film school and learn the basics of cinematic storytelling?!!🙄
And did anyone else notice that Tyler outright stole a scene from What's Love Got to Do with It? Leanne's husband answers the phone the exact way Tina Turner's mom did when Ike called...word for word. 😬

Why won't he go to school, it seems like he likes to be the genius who never went to school, but his movies makes millions. I just think he believes he is good at this. I didn't catch the Tina Turner thing, but not surprised.
The movie was good. The acting was great. But the ending was terrible!! As far as I know, this movie is not based on a true story. It hurts my heart to constantly see us being lynched and sold out by one of our own. It would have been nice to see them all make it, and live a better life. Instead, as per usual, racism and white supremacy win. Maybe Tyler could have created and two endings with one being a happy ending? I’m not really a fan of his work anyway. There seems to be an agenda taking place. The son ended up being raised to be racist not knowing who his biological father really was. How 😞 sad. A Jazzman’s Blues is another one of those “Black” movies that I will NEVER watch again. 👎👎👎
Mississippi Burning was a masterpiece. I will only watch that movie in 10 to 15 year gaps because of how it hurts for so long afterwards, after viewing it. As a child, teen, I was destroyed about coming to FULL understand exactly what humans could do to each other in a "modern tangible" way. Even now, I recall that feeling in my stomach and my eyes swell in seconds with water. Seconds.

A mixed racal woman+ a black man's son is not that white. This part didn't fit.
The old lady at the end representing Miss Leanne doesn't fit . Too white and no resemblance with the main character.

Personally, I liked the movie. Her selfishness and his decision making did get on my nerves a bit. However, I only agree with one thing yall said. It should have been told from her point of view. The song she was listening to about paper airplanes at the end was a nice touch to me too

Thank you for mentioning Imitation of life, as you discussed the plot of the movie I was like... why didn't Tyler Perry simply remake, it is a far better plotline and boy all versions the movie can still bring me to tears. BTW, I need see the movie Joseph wanted to see actual made, sounds so much more intriguing! Tyler Perry needs to stop writing and directing his own films and just use his money to invest in productions of phenomenal up and coming black writers and directors to better realize his vision(s).
I heard somebody else is remaking that, so stay tuned.
This was a great movie. Loved it! He can continue with his own works and leave the remakes to the rest of Hollywood since that's all they seem to do these days.
I am glad he didn't remake Imitation of Life, because it stands alone.
That movie has already been remade. How many times can one movie be redone? At a certain point it becomes overkill. Tyler Perry did rt and this was his best work yet.
Honestly, I think this was a decent movie. I started really liking it because the cinematography was great. My biggest gripe is the deep south tension that was treated as blah...I was so annoyed by the fact that it was not developed better with their love story. Like why would you make such a harrowing decision to go back to the place where folk want to lynch you??!!! Give me a deeper love story to make that decision make sense!!!
I don't think this was about investigating a murder. I think was more about uncovering family secrets particularly in the deep racist south.

It did spark some emotion for me. I felt bad for Lee Anne, but I do know what you two are talking about an what you mean. She couldn't have the life she wanted. Seems like she was trapped. She was so abused and neglected growing up she didn't have enough self-esteem to stand up for herself.

If you were paying attention the father says that Bayou is not his son. And Passing was boring.
That incest scene was disgusting and unnecessary to the movie. There needs to be a trigger warning for that. Definitely wouldn’t have watched. Tyler Perry basically stole the idea for this movie …from the Notebook, the Vanishing Half Book and Netflix’s Passing movie. Also the whistling at a white woman and then being hung? Emitt Till.. I immediately knew the ending after that. Tyler Perry is not original. I don’t believe he wrote this 27 years ago. Why wait this long and put out trash movies? As a black woman I’m tired of black trauma being revisited over and over for entertainment purposes. I will not be watching anymore Tyler Perry movies.
You guys hit the nail on the head for me- I felt absolutely no emotional connection to this story/these characters. There was no sense of will they/won’t they since that question was answered at the very beginning- we know they won’t make it, thus there was no suspense whatsoever. I also felt nothing when he died at the end, even with the visual. This film should’ve evoked way more emotions from me than it did, minus a couple of scenes. On a positive note, the cinematography was good.
The last Tyler Perry movie I liked was 13 years ago, I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF with Taraji P Henson.
Thank you for an honest review. Tyler Perry needs writers. I appreciate him and what he attempts to do...but his stories have either too many wholes or predictable plot lines that happen too fast or too slow. He had a great cast.
If you two aren't black or have black friends to tell you the real deal of colorism - or being Colorstruck. Still happens in black families ....even some Spanish with the favoritism of light skin. The brutal lnguage and hypocrisy is thanks originally to slavery BUT many Black folks sadly keep the tradition though knowing better....
If u want to understand the father.... Look at Uncle Rukus from Boondocks. 😂
I enjoyed the movie and its was easy for me to for. Tyler did a phenomenal job. The cast was exceptional.
"That man who inherits his father's home" and more, is way better plotline! Especially, as the story's focal point is about this politician, knowing a truth, in the end. So, in writing, Bayou's (cruel) death would happen no matter what - and his life was like a jigsaw-puzzle. "It's like three different things, kind of sparring for attention." Yes.:)

Same ole tropes from the same ole tired story lines. Practically every man in the film was trash...zero real redeeming qualities...except for the Jewish guy. Interesting. The women are so strong! And unflawed. And if they are flawed, it was the result of...you guessed it...men. You could see this one coming a mile a way.
We new he could sing long before he came from the service. When he 1st met LeAnn. Remember she said he should have sung instead of trying to play the trumpet and he told who that his dad doesn't like him singing
OMG! the review is spot on.....There were many good reviews of this movie that were positive, I figured I would go ahead and watch.....🤷🏽..... 1. Why the hell was this woman walking down the railroad/down the road/ to see this man/ to ask about the murder. If you were living in Australia in a cave, you knew who murdered Bayou. 2. It seemed like Mr. Perry put every movie he had seen in this movie....stuff from Sounder/Color Purple/Nicholas Brothers...Just so many references that were not original 3. The family dynamics 🤷🏽. The father hates the dark one/ grandfather hates the granddaughter/ momma don't hate nobody...it's like a Sly and Family Stone Song. 3. Jewish character, pointless 4. Even if Leanne had a baby with Bayou or Santa Claus, she's Biracial the baby can be ANY color . 5. Why was Leanne 1000 years old at the end of the movie. 6. It feels like Tyler is took the training wheels off, can't ride the bike, but won't let anyone help him....good luck sir.
At the end of the day, the movie is better than many of his others, but as someone said, the bar is set so low, better is still not good.
The beginning reminded me of The Notebook. After that it was just all over the place.

I hated this movie. It was all over the place. It felt like we’ve seen this movie a bunch of times: the color purple, passing, ruby’s bucket of blood, etc… he took a bunch of traumatic movie tropes and dumped them into one film.
Is this a Tyler Perry hate rant.... Sounds like you liked nothing that Tyler Perry did about this movie. Good movie! In my opinion.
The issue for the father wasn't Bayou's skin color, but his perceived feebleness, not to mention the question of who fathered him. As the film (and genetic evidence) point out, dark-skinned people may parent lighter-skinned children, so I'm not sure why it would "make more sense" to have those actors swap roles.
I'm in Florida so I am binging your reviews during the storm, thank you Gentlemen. The only Tyler movie I've liked was Acrimony, his movies always seem off. Forgive me Lord but these chitlin circuit productions must stop. Tyler is a decent person and can be more effective.

Too predictable! The Notebook tells it better! For example Why didn't Bayou's mother pack up and follow her son!! There was absolutely no reason to stay in the south!!!

I love the film. This is what I wanted the movie "Passing" to be. And it made you think about all the white people out here who do not know that they are passing. I loved the scenes and I really felt the anxiety throughout.
Oh joy. I thought I was the only one that was not feeling this movie. I said I would watch again but that would be much much much later. The only character I like was Cisley. Plus, I agree with you guys that Tyler should had made this movie about Leann. It felt like I was watching Forest Gump/ The Notebook. And Bayou singing, nah. We at a Jazz club and he give me Bing Crosby vibe. Dry as toast. Tyler Perry need to get some REAL writers. I digress 😌
ITA. 1 scene when brother passed out I couldn't understand what he was saying, tried like 5 times & gave up, when Bayou was putting on his clothes. Something about brains splattered on him. Do you know what he was saying?
There was no real reason why the brother hated Bayou so much except he was doing & being like the dad? Confused about what happened when he got to Chicago & hooked up w/ precious daddy. Tyler writes to me with over dramatic shock scenes/actions then try to create dialogue around it making the story muddled. Mama couldn't leave & visit Chicago even? Geez. Almost everyone in this film was selfish except Sitsi & Bayou weak cause daddy didn't like his skintone = nope.
He was rambling while Bayou was dressing him. He said I can’t wait until they kill you , and he said they blew the daddy’s brains out in front of him. He may have alluded the daddy introduced him to drugs, too.
It would've made more sense for the mother to move to Chicago. There was no need for them to go back to Georgia.
I was hoping for a different ending, so I wouldn’t spend the next few hours upset with white people.
@@carbar3936 I myself didn't understand what the brother was saying. I'm thinking his father got shot. By that time I just wanted to be done with the movie. And you're right, why didn't he just had his mother leave town when he knew they was going to kill him. Bucket would've just been left there.
@@carbar3936 Just a guess.. from the scene where the father walked out on them and went to Chicago and Willie Earl's babble, I believe the mother stepped out on Willie Earl's father, the father caught Bayou's mother in the act with Bayou's actual father and killed him in front of Wille Earl 💁🏾♀️

When Bayou went back to the south, he should have been armed ! His people who loved him should have been armed and never let Bayou out of their sight !!!!
I think Tyler Perry did that on purpose of not making the racism so hard for his audience because so many black people complain about not wanting to see that stuff so I think he did it in a way where it was there but we didn't have to feel what it what we normally feel when we see that stuff just as the scene where ( bio) was hung from the tree they didn't show him hanging they just showed his legs, at the end I appreciate it and I understood it I don't know why y'all don't understand it
Willie Earl is also a MUCH better singer.
After watching the movie for what seemed like 4 hours I eventually looked up some of the critic reviews and most of them were just gas lighting Tyler Perry for some reason but you guys finally gave a real Siskel & Ebert review that unfolded the perfect synopsis of TP's strengths and weaknesses in making films.

Agreed. I’ve been saying that for years, that Tyler Perry should just produce quality films from up and coming writers and directors. Maybe even some established ones as well.
I did similar, looked for reviews then said Oh OK maybe this is better....nope got on the TP roller coaster story time...
The movie was great! I didn’t know that it was a Tyler Perry movie until I started watching it & saw the opening credits. Overall it was a true love story with racist/color under tones that made me cry at the end because I knew what typically happens during that era…. I’m sure those of us who lived during those years of time ago understood what was happening. It’s not meant to make people feel bad, but it’s factual to what happened to black folks. It has a few twists at the end. I applaud Tyler Perry for his creativity, vision, versatility & for being a trailblazer. Can’t wait to see more from him.

I think that you where very disappointed that TP did not come out with gay characters in this movie, so you were again disappointed.
i got what the movie was throwing down but it shouldve been flushed out more its good as a whole but it left me wanting more
Both of my parents were born in 1923 and 1927. They had me well into their 40s. My dad came up North. When I watched this story it was very familiar from the experiences that he and mother witnessed during that time. So for me I appreciated this story and there is another called Mudbound. There were several lessons to be learned and sometimes you will uncover stuff that you never knew was there. It was so reminiscent of was discreetly talked about in some family settings . Everyone has an opinion good or bad and in between about this movie. Maybe it was just easier for me to like it because I heard those identical stories from family. I enjoyed it because although it was a fictional story there are plenty of factual dynamics represented.

I couldn't say it much better. But the grandfather, I personally could take care of him, that made me so mad. So evil was the mom. I knew something wasn't right because he was so protective of her toward Bayou. Welcome to the south in the 1940s. Molestation and rape were a constant as the confederate flag. Bayou was a dumb kid who got let go. Bucky was so selfish and weak. She had her cake and eat it too. Through her actions, she became an old woman who didn't anything except keep the secret within her all that time. But before everyone judge her so harshly if you could pass as white at that time, would you did the same thing too? It's a shame the flag is still around to this day.
Another said thing of this movie. I actually knew a woman who passed for white who was married to a KKK member.

Even as someone in an interracial relationship…. I will never understand some people’s desire for white skin so badly that they’re willing to die over it. Bayou impregnated a MARRIED woman and returned to an area where he was a wanted man over his fetish that he called “love”. And she had the nerve to slap Sissy! Her and her rocking chair and paper planes can take a hike. I don’t feel bad for either of those two. The movie did a great job of exposing the pathology of these types.
I'm from Louisiana & this is how it is/was for so may families. Exposing so many secrets that poor upcoming whites & passing Blacks suppressed & hid from their partners. So many elements in this movie that resonate in many Southern families today. Tyler perry touched basis on so much in this movie. He could've run out of time making it about race or whatever but that was not this movie. It was so much more...obviously the letters were more so a confession & an awakening for the son. A way for the mother to explain in detail so much without saying it verbatim in the end. This film was depicting a love romance b/t 2 people during a time that had so many obstacles & levels to love. So much was depicted in this movie you guys just over thought it. The movie touched on colorism, self-hatred, incest, sibling rivalry & comparison narrative, the Jews helping Blacks only to help themselves but both groups share a common oppression story narrative, & the corrupt racist politicians & law enforcement. All of this deeply rooted in the South. If you're not from here it's complex & you all totally didn't get it.
All that can be going on in someone life and at one time and be a part of someone’s history but it’s shouldn’t and cannot resonate in a 2 hour film. You will never be able to depict all of that in a 2 hour film. Movies are suppose to have one or two topics and you stick to it. If not your audience will get confused and bored at the same time. Tyler needs to go to school for his craft. He thinks his audience is stupid. And not to come at you but clearly some of his die hard fans accept his work and he keeps giving it to because y’all think it so good.
Like someone else said this probably would have been better as a mini series. That way we can unfold bayou’s history And Leann’s history. Why his dad hated him. What happens to the father. Why did his brother hate him. Where did his love for music come from. Can any of these characters be redeemable. The color purple covered all these topics, including singing and the blues, incest, colorism, and do it a hell of a lot better than Perry does. 🙄 It was better than a lot of Perry’s other films but it’s just not enough.
