Dji Spark RTH vs MANUAL return. Which is better?

  • As promised... today i tried to find out what is more efficient in terms of battery drainage... to use Dji's auto RTH feature or return to home with manual control....
    You will find the results interesting!
    Conditions were the same in both flights,
    Batteries had almost the same cycles.
    The filming took place in Thymari Attikis in Greece.
    Very hot day... beaches full of people... last hot days of summer!
    Dji Spark again performed perfectly!
    Be sure to send me your thoughts...
    I will try the same thing with Mavic soon...

    Push the stick on RTH and it goes faster. You can also change altitude, you just can't change course. I've done RTH twice over a lake, RTH when my battery hit point of no return I was able to make it come back faster and still have battery left over.

    This is interesting because everyone SWEARS sport mode eats battery.. yet you were in sport mode in manual return yet auto return doesn't use sport. Even in sport mode you had more battery. This is very weird and goes against what everyone else claims and what other videos show as far as sport mode eating battery. (Going faster so makes sense it eats more)
    Yet this video shows otherwise. Nicely done!
    Did you just follow the map to fly home manually or you followed/knew the terrain or?

      bad conclusion, a 6:45 the automatic is at 25% but take 2mins and 8% to go down 50 meters

    Also, the difference might have been even greater if you had been recording video in-cam on the Auto-RTH (right side). The left side was recording but not the right. I assume there would be some energy draw for writing to an SD card. Probably an accident/oversight, but I don't blame you for not trying it again since conditions wouldn't be identical.

    Excellent video and great music! Would manual mode with the mavic pro also be the most efficient method for rth too? When you say manual mode do you mean flying back in sport mode or some other mode? We're you manually flying back in sport mode in this instance or a slower flying manual mode? Thank you!

      thank you very much for your comment. By "manual" I indeed mean returning home in sport mode full throttle. I am about to launch the same video for Mavic Pro as well so stay tuned!

    RTH is a great way to bring back your drone when you've done all you set out to do and there's no real risk of it running out of power. It will also allow you to video your drone coming in for a perfect landing. But if things are really dicey manual control is better. I suggest not quite maxing out the speed but flying a little faster than the RTH default speed. I also suggest showing everything in metres: altitude, distance and velocity. Make yourself aware of velocities in metres per second both horizontally and vertically. It is far easier to estimate things when you are using standard units. How do you translate km/h into metres per second? Answer? You don't. Keep it all in metres per second while you are flying and you can translate into other units later if you need to impress other people.
    The best way to get more from a Spark is to disable obstacle avoidance. The difference is huge. Having obstacle avoidance on artificially limits the flying speed so that the drone can stop before hitting the obstacles it detects (which sometimes are raindrops...). If you know you are flying high and clear of obstacles you can switch this off and so fly faster in GPS mode and not get the "broken neck" effect of the gimbal jerking around when you change speed and direction in Sports mode. I would only bother with Sports mode at all if I wanted to fight a strong wind or wanted maximum speed rather than maximum range and endurance or I was just zipping about the sky for fun or to deter or escape unwanted attention from birds.

    Good video! You should forward this video to DJI and ask them for an explanation...I think it's reasonable for the consumer to expect RTH to be the absolute optimal mode to fly at full power efficiency....if that's not the case then the whole feature is nothing more than a gimmick for lazy people :)

    • @indorock
      @indorock 7 років тому +1

      Hmm i did just notice something strange...the camera does seem to move a few times during RTH but I thought that disabling the gimbal was a part of that mode. So is there something I'm missing there?

    • @kriptonis
      @kriptonis 6 років тому +13

      What weird logic is that? RTH is for when you lose control of your aircraft. Controler/Cellphone failure, out of range or other interference problems. It is not and is never advertised as the fastest or more efficient way to return to the home point.
      It is a last resort backup. It can crash onto obstacles during RTH or not be able to return at all.
      Its like accelerating like a maniac on your car and slamming on the brakes demanding that ABS absolutely prevents you from crashing. It won't.

    • @MannyCAM
      @MannyCAM 6 років тому +3

      kriptonis : Totally agree! An important safety feature. Peace of mind. But it is really nice to know that if the situation arises, where wind or other unforeseeable events happen such as Sparky wanting to take the scenic way back 😟 (flyaways) you can switch to manual control to get back faster. Which of course means you would need to have control of the aircraft for it to happen.

    It says this in the specs of the machine, hover time vs flight time due to the aerodynamic design of it, but so many people still have videos up of their drones falling into the ocean using RTH haha, DJI should print this in huge letter on the manual, or simply change the RTH to fang it if it's at say 100m altitude, just turn on collision avoidance and get back asap

    • @EduardoRimoli
      @EduardoRimoli 5 років тому

      the collision avoidance is turned off exactly when you engage the Sport Mode, so there are other risks also.

      actually, the point of the video was NOT to prove which way is quicker (of course manual is quicker), BUT which way you make better battery economy especially in emergency cases such as in my other video. It is an experiment and it is not suppose to prove that RTH is useless in no way.

      watched just now! Very nice try! Now listen: Try to film in different spots/locations at the same area. Then use the transitions to jump from one spot to another. You used the transitions just as an effect without changing the location of the imagery. If you do as I say it becomes more interesting. Also try adding more text (maybe some titles of what we see). Slowly slowly you are going to discover more ideas on how to make it better. The better it becomes the more you want to deal with it! Last but not least, there are some very nice youtube videos explaining how to make cinematic tricks to your videos. Try 1-2 of them as well. Will be waiting to see your new video! In a few days I am going to a ski centre on vacation and I am planning to send the drone to the top of a pick at 9.000 ft and land it there!! Then take off and bring it back to me. How does it sound like an idea?

    Don't know if the spark is the same but I learned from a guy with phantoms if you hold the forward joystick in the full ahead position during the RTH you get a faster RTH. I tried it on my Mavic pro and it works

    • @Thanos28GR
      @Thanos28GR  6 років тому

      for as long as you push the full throttle button you are not in the RTH per se. It is like taking control WHILST in automatic pilot somehow.

    • @RoughAndWretchedRAW
      @RoughAndWretchedRAW 6 років тому

      I've done this on multiple occasions. It won't let you deviate from the GPS RTH route back. It wont operate like tap to fly where you can yaw around or move from side to side all it will let you do is speed up or slow down your HS on the RTH route. Controller is still in RTH and beeping and you are still flying on the GPS RTH route marked on the map exactly. This is true even if it's not a forced software RTH. Manually press RTH on the controller with a ton of battery and good signal and it still works this way. You can speed up RTH. By pushing the the stick forward and holding it there. speed it up by about 20kph in fact. From 30s to 50s
      That guy that does the video flying 8km to his holiday house video did another on RTH against the wind in different modes. he said he heard that pushing the stick forward sped up RTH. He tried it on his phantom 4. It worked. So I figured I'd try it on my Mavic pro platinum and it worked the same.

    • @RoughAndWretchedRAW
      @RoughAndWretchedRAW 6 років тому +3

      I'm not arguing I'm just looking at the differences and the possible reasons. For instance: With automated RTH it climbs straight up to the RTH height to ensure it clears obstacles. While in manual RTH you were moving forward during the climb because you know and can see there are no obstacles. The forward motion provides extra lift on the rotors of helicopters and planes wings I assume it's the same with quads so uses less energy to climb when in forward motion. Another difference is horizontal speed. Moving the stick full forward on the phantom and Mavic will get that extra speed in automated RTH. Maybe on the air and spark also? I don't own one nor have I seen a video so I don't know.
      I love to fly so automated RTH for me means something is wrong. Low battery cell phone quit. Some reason to need and ensure the most direct route back. There are a lot of videos of folks doing manual RTH and zig zagging across the sky fighting sideways wind gusts and using up battery. Point for me is to get back quick with the least battery usage. Just saying perhaps that answer lies in a marriage of the two. Cancel the automation and do a manual RTH until altitude is gained. then select automated RTH push the stick forward to ensure direct route and best speed. Then cancel as it gets above you for a manual landing. I know the Mavic descends faster manually than automated.
      By the way. Good video. I've watched hundreds and to date yours its the only one that compared power usage.
