The best representation of this is the Kinks, Ya Really Got Me. While the story has been debated, Dave Davies sliced his speaker after an argument and in the process created a defining sound.

Since it's a modeling amp it probably won't work. Part of the reason amps back then could even distort is because of the large amount of gain going into the vacuum tubes, which causes clipping (chopping off the top of the waveform). This turns the input signal into something closer to a Square wave. Since modeling amps don't have tubes, they're less likely to distort at higher volumes typically
It was originally done with a tube amp, with all knobs cranked up to 10. Without damaging the speaker, those tubes will introduce a bit of distortion. Solid state amps are much cleaner, and it may clip if cranked all the way up, but definitely won’t overdrive that much. The cut speakers just added that little bit extra distortion
This is correct. It's really more properly called overdrive, but it is caused by the tubes clipping the waveform of the guitar signal in a smooth way. The sharper you make that clipping, the more you move into distortion and, ultimately, fuzz.
I think that is just regular time tube amps going overboard. The technique attempting to be showed here is a real thing that did work well enough for someone to where in the 1950’s (I think) the song was considered too violent due to the little distortion it produced.
So I'm guessing you don't go to concerts because all live music is amplified unless you are listening to some crack head play an acoustic on the street corner.
Apparently Link Wray is now just “some guy who popularized distortion” he’s arguably one of the most impactful figures in music history for that one thing and despite Rumble being completely void of lyrics, vocalization, or any type of message it was banned from the radio. Only song ever to be banned from the radio without having lyrics. Y’all better catch up on your music history
I never destroyed an amp speaker so I can't say that I know it works or not. But back when I started playing guitar before I had any distortion pedals I found a way to channel a lot of volume and it worked. That is all distortion is, like gain. High gain is is a lot of volume that often translates to distortion.
first song to use destortion was rocket 88, the way they got it was an accident, the amp fell off the roof of the car on the way to sun records, they tried fixing the amp by taping newspapers/magazines to it which then gave it distortion
Distortion is caused because the volume is so loud that the speaker is moving the air so much that it distorts the soundwave. It will work if you turn it up
