“The Mockingbird Project” was commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association and the Mississippi Music Teachers Association for their 2023 State Conference. The inspiration for this piece started when I pulled into my parking space beside the Hinds Community College Muse Band Hall over the summer. As I started to get out of my car, I noticed a mockingbird, the state bird of Mississippi, perched on one of the sidewalk rails. I immediately heard what would become the opening statement played by a solo flute in the first measure of this composition. Starting with this simple motive, the piece continues to develop throughout as the “mockingbird - flute solo in measure one” imitates different sounds as mockingbirds are known to do.
