    Somehow, the Comet Empire General sounds more threatening in Original Japanese than in this dub. Hearing his high-pitch voice like this made it hard to take him seriously.
    And they even get the name of their weapon wrong, I mean, the guns on their battleships that attack Captain Slate's fleet was called Impulse Gun in Original, and everyone, even those who watched only dub, know that Shock Cannon is Earth's weapon since Quest of Iscandar.

    I read somewhere that detailed in the manga version was that the magna flame gun (whatever it was called in Japanese) had been more a curiosity than a real weapon, as it had a very short range compared even to light shock cannons. What we're seeing in the is a melding of Cometine and Gamilon tech; the MFG is being fired into a SMITE field they copied from Deslock's new command ship and is 'warping' to the target.

      I personally prefer the original version. The Stakes are easier to follow and comprehend.
      Earth was resource strapped having just fought a pyrrhic war against Gamilas, and were struggling to rebuild their fleet.
      If the new series had been more realistic, pitting a hundred Earth Ships against a thousand powerful Gatlantis ships, and needing to outsmart the superior fleet with tactics, it would be more compelling.
      But instead earth has a thousand ships, and Gatlantis has millions…
      Every time a million ships are blown up, a million more pop in from the aether…
      It’s incomprehensible and impossible to feel compelled by the Stakes of the story when a thousand earth shops are blown up, because the writers suddenly pull out another thousand ships from nowhere…

      @beuwenthedragon7122 i know, the majority of these space shows seem to have no clue how to handle scale. Like, yeah, thousands vs hundreds can be better managed you can do abit more with. But i think the problem to is that they were just concentrated at saturn, like what? Wouldn't it make more sense that the comet empire with millions of ships just be spread out and strech the EDF?

    And another thing(assuming UA-cam puts my comments in the write spot!), the rocked out music in this scene(where the enemy fleet leader talks of plunging into the heart of the Earth Fleet) are awsome. It reminds of that classic tune(which the name escapes me...) used in the original James Caan Roller Ball movie.
    The Earth fleet turret guns sound cool, as usual. I loved mimicing that noise when I was a kid(15-17?)back in the early 80's. I still do!

    4:09 I wish Gideon had said, "All ships, switch off your wave motion guns. We're warping in", then let loose with their shock cannons.

    • @josephfilm73
      @josephfilm73 10 років тому +3

      The first fleet missed all targets because they couldn't lock on. From previous episode, Empire ships could confuse computer aided earth ships. The Comet empire flag ship was fired on by dozens of earth ships, most shots missing. Only when Empire ships were in the magnetic storm could Earth target ships. Further, the earth ships were built quickly and without much armor. Gideon said they were outmanned (over 80 ships) and outgunned (greater range). He intended to use surprise, why he left a big reserve fleet behind Titan. Retreating was a decoy. It took away the advantage their longer range firepower.

    • @stevencohen624
      @stevencohen624 10 років тому +1

      josephfilm73 Excellent points. Yes, the Comet Empire had some technological advances that proved to be a major disadvantage for the Earth Defense Fleet. I believe they also acquired some teleportation technology from the Gamilas/Gamilons, enabling them to increase the magma flame gun's range.
      I forgot that Hijikata/Gideon had a reserve fleet near Titan. In that case, his retreat was brilliant ruse.
      I wish that the Andromeda had survived. She would have come in handy when Zordar's dreadnought came out of the wrecked fortress and attacked the Yamato/Argo.

    • @josephfilm73
      @josephfilm73 10 років тому +1

      Steven Cohen There was an episode where they argued against computerizing the argo. It was the only ship that was manual. Gideon said to Wildstar chase the Empire fleet into Saturn's rings, he'll be waiting. The first fleet was to be sacrificed to close the range of battle (Japanese version). When that didn't work Gideon had to retreat to close the range more. That the flame gun didn't work was luck. In the Japanese version, Gideon didn't ask what to do. That was stupid English dub. It's customary in Japan for the high ranks to take over only when the lower ranks can't handle things. It wouldn't have mattered. They had fired the particle wave gun and were ordered to use all their remaining power shooting the top of the Comet Empire. It would take a half an hour even for the new ships to gain back any power. No earth ship could match Zordars ship anyhow. Gideon said it would take 5 Andromedas to take on the Comet Empire. Zordars ship had more firepower than the Comet.

    • @stevencohen624
      @stevencohen624 10 років тому +1

      josephfilm73 Someone once commented that the Yamato should have resumed firing once the dreadnought came out of Gatlantis. I don't think the Yamato's shock cannons could have caused much damage to it, given its' size. From what you've told me, even if she had assistance from the Andromeda, it probably wouldn't have mattered. At the beginning of the first season, we saw the Yamato survive a massive nuclear explosion as it was launching. Zordar's ship was undoubtedly even more resilient than that.

    • @josephfilm73
      @josephfilm73 10 років тому +1

      Steven Cohen In the Japanese version (movie) Kodai expressed regret for assuming the Comet Empire was destroyed and not kept firing. It may have made some difference when the ship wasn't yet turned on. It probably had the same shields the Comet had. Why wouldn't it? None of this really matters because the script called for a sacrifice to be made. This parallels the actual history of the Yamato, which was sent on a mission of no return. The whole Saturn battle was based on battle at midway. There were plans for a larger ship with 21" guns and over 150,000 tons but it was only partly constructed.

      @@TheDaltonius Gideon is too pride and too arrogance.
      Had Andromeda assigned to more competent captain like Wildstar. it'll be better off.
      But again EDF didn't have Wave Motion tech until much later so early Earth Fleet in EP1 is a sucker (In truth EP1 Season1 is wholly written by Leiji Matsumoto, based on his daddy's (Tsuyoshi) wartime experience as IJA Air Corps leading ace. particularly during the ill-fated Phillipines campaign which he losts much of his young airmen because he considered these subordinates were not ready enough to engage the enemy air fleet so he ordered them to avoid attack. a decision he regretted for the whole life, remember EP1 where Wildstar the younger asked about his brother, Avatar simply lowered his head and say 'I'm sorry'. The Battle itself is heavily based on the same WW2 experiences in Phillipines, particularly with a scene that EDF Fleet shoot its main gun only to find that it does nothing against Gamilon basic warships! Actually this reflected the same Battleship actions where American BB (can't remember what) did outshoot and heavily damaged Kirishima without the latter has any chance to return fire. this because The Allies (US Navy and Royal Navy) is geared towards computerized electronic warfare!!! Allies had BOTH Radar and Rangekeeper firecontrol systems, IJN had none.
      Funny enough. Space Yamato eventually got its own computerized firecrontrol system some two centuries later which Wildstar did use them to great effect against each and every enemies the ship encounters. and funny enough, shock cannon targetting system is nothing short of Luftwaffe Revi C12D gunsight, ( no similiar Revies were fitted in any Japanese warplanes including Zero.) which one example is now owned by Leiji Matsumoto himself!

      You're right. Argo/Yamato just takes a beating and keeps on ticking. It's as if the ship was meant to take whatever punishment and pain, no matter how many times they've been bombed and still get the job done. Reminds me of Japanese animators and the masochistic pain they go through to get shows like these made and still do the job well.

    One big question: Why didn't Sandor share his reflection technology with the Earth Defense Force. For reference, I allude to the last episode of the Quest for Iscandar. You would think after the first very successful test that the such a defense would have been extremely handy against the magna flame gun. Sandor is too tight-lipped about his pet projects.

    I'm sorry, but I just can't enjoy 'Star Blazers' like I enjoy the original Japanese version. Sure it's difficult to find dead-accurate subbing, but at least the names don't sound like they were invented on the spot by ten year olds and the voice acting doesn't fall short on me. I mean, Desslar (or Desslok) had an amazing powerful voice where as his dubbed counterpart had an irritating parody of a British accent. Not to mention how skilled the Japanese voice actors were. I'm sorry to say but Star Blazers voice actors sound like they're reading straight off the script with little preparation. :/

    • @80srama1
      @80srama1 8 років тому +3

      +Tom Hughes I know what you're saying. The original voices were stronger and sounded better, and the tone of the series felt that it was geared towards adults (in so many ways). However, my guess is is that it depends which version you saw first- the original Space Battleship Yamato or Starblazers. My own feeling is that both versions have their strengths. And if you were a 70's kid, so used to bland Hanna Barbara & Filmmation product, who was watching Starblazers for the first time, you would've noticed such a difference between Starblazers & such product as say "Hong Kong Phooey" (ugh!). Heck, the animation was detailed & well drawn, the music was sensational, the action was exciting and the drama was way above even "Jason of Star Command" or "Flash Gordon" or "Star Trek" (the FIlmmation series where the characters hardly moved, not so much as a jiggle from Kirk's waistline.). Finally, given that it was non-Union actors who were dubbing for one of the first major anime shows of the 70's for an after-school audience, the voices came out okay (although yes, some of the dialogue does veer toward lines that sound out of Plan 9 From Outer Space.) So even if the original voice of Desler is the best, Desslock's British accent still captures the arrogance and cunning as well as the humanity of one of Sci Fi Tv's most fascinating villains. Besides, what I think is a miracle is how Starblazers managed to stick with the original story, keeping so much drama, pathos and sheer suspense intact, considering the censorship of the period. (Anyone for the SuperFriends?)

      At least they didn't do it like they do in Europe. They just put a louder voice over the original voice. Its hideous. I liked the dubbed better, that is what i am used to. Dubbed isn't always automatically worse.

      @@Jordan-Ramses You're totally wrong. Here in Italy we have on of the best voice actor selection in the world, and most of them worked also on animation.
      Starblazers was 100% dubbed, using the USA names since they imported directly from Japan (this was unusual, normally the dubbed directly the Japanese series).
      The voice acting is absolutely superior, quite better than the original StarBlazers.

      Patrick Lenigan There is little chance of there being anything but Japanese voice at this time. The Star Blazers 2199 dubbing never got past the attempt to get to sold to a studio and the Subtitled version stopped coming out after Volume 4 was released a year ago. There has been absolutely nothing about more on that front in the last year. Only the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 material keeps coming, and the Japanese will make more.

      The ghosts of the dead who served on her before is the glue that keeps the Yamato (Argo) together in battle where a lesser ship will be destroyed. I know that is not anywhere in the story line but I convinced myself that that is the only reasonable explanation behind the spirit of the Yamato.

    After forgetting about the "deadly cold" of Saturn's ice ring, the Comet Empire was a "Genital Bleep". His incompetence cost his troops their ships, lives and the battle. If he were Gamilon, Desslok would have shot him on the spot.
