    Well damn it. I spent hours looking for videos, collecting information, assembling disjointed information and every question I had was in this one video. Turns out I bought nearly the same stones but spent half a day doing research instead of watching this 17min video which I just found. Well, okay. Do appreciate the video. Thanks

      hahaaa! There is a little weird info on stones out there... people get way too weird and detailed about them.. its a whetstone... is it hard? no? is it soft? is it medium? We call those forum guys stone whisperers lol. Appreciate the comment.

    I'll second the Shapton Pro stones loving carbon steel...I actually like finishing a lot of my carbon knives on the green Pro 2k, if you take your time on that stone it can produce some ridiculous edges on carbon steel. Just the right amount of tooth while still being really refined, it's my favorite Pro stone.

    I'm another stone nut... Over 2 dozen stones... 8 Shapton pros, 4 different Shapton Glass, 3 oil stones, 3 Suehiros, Atoma 400, Chosera 400, Tojiro 4000, a King and a couple of cheap combo stones. A bunch of specialty stones like my Dragon stone for my scythe. The Shapton pros did an excellant job on my husqvarna splitting ax. I just love the sound of metal on stone.

    Also with my experience, to use the 6k properly you need a heavy slurry then as you progress you keep diluting the slurry until there is no more slurry

    Yes, different steel like different stone
    after owning and using as much (if not more) of those stones.
    I've found that an Atoma 140/220 grit diamond plate would work as efficiently on any of my stone (Chosera, Shapton Pro/Glass, Sigma Power, Super Stone, Arashiyama, Masamoto, Mizuyama...) as the expensive Shapton lapping plate. DMT diamond works just fine but wears down faster than the Atoma. Well, I sold my Sigma Power stone + Shapton lapping plate + Mizuyama + Masamoto as I don't see much difference in performance with my technique, and there was just too much money tied up in them. I'm just not a fan of the King, slow, requires soaking, too muddy but easily loads up
    however, I've been transitioning to Natural Stones - Arkansas stone family and the huge world of Japanese Natural Stones. Yes, they require a much larger learning curve but it's a pleasant to learn and use!
    If I had to absolutely get only one set, I'd go with the Chosera 800/3000 + Atoma 220 + bare leather strop

      I have a couple Jnats now days my self, and a bunch of arks and a couple cotis. Atoma plates are excellent, but I still see really good results with the DGLP, especially on very fine synthetic stones. It is hard to explain.
      My favorite lapping plate right now is the DMT dia flat, its so big!
      Thanks for the comment man, what Jnats do you have?
      PS-I hate chosera. Both my 1k and 5k ended up getting insanely bad cracking issues about 6 months ago. I took all the soaking and drying precautions. I will never buy another chosera! 210 wasted before I got to wear the stones down even a quarter of the way!

      I have mostly Honyama, specifically some Nakayama Karasu medium hard, Nakayama Nashiji medium, Okudo Suita medium hard, Yaginoshima Asagi medium hard, natural Aoto, Tsusima and a hybrid stone made from natural Iyo-to powder.
      Well, in my case, my Chosera set has never cracked on me. I never soak them in water, just apply as needed, this could be the case?
      My ultimate choice would be an Atoma but I have a DMT in my case with my minimal sharpening set all the time!
      thanks for your sharing

    • @glytch5
      @glytch5  8 років тому

      I have a okudo suita coming! King loads up!?!?!? that has to be the furthest thing from my results I have ever heard someone say about a whetstone.
      Be glad your chosera stones are not cracking yet, me and my friend both have useless 5k stones, and now my 1k is going. I used to not soak them, but now I do because I do not care. They were originally not marketed as a splash n go stone, the stones just said don't soak them for more than 30 minutes or some time frame on the side. They actually do a lot better with a few minute soak.
      I'm thinking of smashing my 5k for fun, it has given me such grief.
      I still feel the DGLP makes my stones cut differently, the load up on the glass stones just looks and certain way with it. Idk thats all opinion though

    • @newinspiration2108
      @newinspiration2108 8 років тому

      mine is a White Okudo Suita, yes, you'll love it, there's reason that Okudo is named the "king of suita"
      everything above came from me testing and using all my stone on my tools; I tried the King conventional then the Deluxe series and they both load up earlier than I expected.
      As of now, yes my Chosera 800 does work great after 5min soak.
      My glassstone just does not load up that easily, well, my 500 and 2000 do load up just a little bit after around 10 consecutive knives sharpening... The glasstone series is still among one of my most favorite though.

    • @glytch5
      @glytch5  8 років тому +1

      I didn't know they were the king of suita. That is cool! Yeah glass stones are excellent, good for razors, wood working tools and knives alike!
      I have found one downside though, and that is if you thin down a clad steel traditional kitchen knife with soft cladding, they load up like crazy... they become a little too intense for the soft iron.
      I recently got a 16k glass in, and one side of it was coming apart from its glass backing... I had to send it back before I could use it. I swear I am the most unlucky person with new products on the planet

    I have taken your advice and tried out the Naniwa Superstones. I really like them; in fact, I prefer them to the Professional/Chosera whetstones. They get a burr quicker than any other stones, excluding the diamond stones on certain steels I have tried like 1095 and LC200N, while M-390 is not good. I still use diamond stones for the really difficult steels like M-390 and CPM S90V.
    The Superstones leave an incredible shine. I have noticed they lose a bit more of material from the stone than Choseras, but it is not much still. Also one must be careful around the ricasso area--especially when no choil is present--as this contact can wear or even damage slightly the stone edge. This is true with any whetstone, but these seem a bit softer. I have been using a system of GlassStone (ceramic) and then the Superstone of same grit with only 20-50 careful strokes per side.

    Very nice collection ! Ive been thinking about Shapton stones i use DMT diamond plates now then go to high grit sandpaper up to 8000 for my irons it works BUT it gets expensive ive tryed sharp pebble stones but i had no luck with them the diamonds work great up to 1200 i need something after that .

    • @glytch5
      @glytch5  5 років тому

      I started out with diamonds and ceramics my self. They work pretty good... but they do leave a certain type of an edge. It's a somewhat debated topic on weather or not you should use diamond stones to sharpen tools.
      Anyway... for woodworking I am going to say any shapton will do you wonders... but the shapton pro stones are a bit harder than the glass, and to me that is more important on a chisel. The Chosera stones are probably one of the best chisel stones you can buy... however I would NEVER recommend them to anyone.. because all of my chosera stones cracked under normal use.
      I would try and get something in the 4-6 k range for after the 1200 diamond. Just keep in mind grit means absolutely nothing, it is just a number for manufacturers to explain the level of refinement of their own products. A 1200 grit DMT probably polishes like a 800 grit king stone, or 600 grit sandpaper.
      This vidoe needs and update... I have bought and sold many stones since this time!

    Here as a woodworker. My chisels and planes are O1, A2, and PMV-11 which I believe are all high carbon, so recommendation would be super stones and the Shapton pros?

    • @glytch5
      @glytch5  4 роки тому

      I love naniwa supers... but they really aren't great for chisels. Their just too soft and marshmallow like. Easily to gouge and tend to load up with a lot of pressure. For chisels I like chosera and pro stones. Now the 10k super stone... PERFECT for a standard chisel micro bevel. That particular stone is a bit harder than the rest in the line.

    OMG matt story of my life, started out a knife nut now im an abrasion nut LOL
    I started with waterstones then got the dmt credit cards now i am into SIC and oil stones and a few natural stones, my collection comprises of a king 1000 and 1200 unfortunately my 6k fell and broke, you can see me salvaging some use from it on my channel, i have a good few natural hones from the river which vary from 8-12k, i also have 2k,3k,5k and 8k taidea stones also dozens of cheap and used SIC stones, money is my issue(still a student), I would like to own shapton ceramics, chosera and shapton glass hones and a full set of DMT bench stones. I am placing an order for a norton india stone atm.

    • @glytch5
      @glytch5  9 років тому

      TheRedRider100 I don't have much experience with natural stones, I have a surgical black arkansas and a c12k stone, both of which I NEVER use. Abrasives are so much fun!
      You are quarrying your own stones!?!?! Will you trade me one for something? I would love to try it.
      I would go gentle on the DMT stones, I have a few and I must say, I pretty much never touch them anymore, I use my DMT plates for slurry stones and lapping mostly.

    • @TheRedRider100
      @TheRedRider100 9 років тому

      I use a tile and a SIC stone for lapping, i dont quarry my stones but I do explore alot and i do find river stones that give an edge, i have a large 3 ft diameter blue stone which is about 10k and has a white slurry, i plan to cut it after my exams in june, if you want i can email or facebook some pictures of the natural stones I have, dont mind sending over a few.

  • @willieboy3011

    Very good info. I was surprised that you did not have any diamond stones. I have found them the best for some steels, as they are so aggressive. The pro-Shapton 2000 and 5000 work so well, although they feel quite different from Choseras. I have had no problem with cracking of Choseras. Would you say lack of alloys in the steel, rather than the high carbon content, are what match up better for the Pro-Shapton stones? You have definitely got me thinking. Check out Knifeinformer steel composition chart. The chart matches steel composition to a particular blade steel. Again, good job.

    • @glytch5
      @glytch5  5 років тому +1

      Yes I do think the lesser alloying helps with certain stones. This video is a bit older... and I have changed my opinions a lot of over time but oddly enough... the higher alloy the steel the better cheap soft king style stones seem to work for me. Those super hard splash n go stones tend to just load up for me with the high alloy. It also depends on how much pressure you use and such... lot of variables. Thanks for the comment

    • @willieboy3011
      @willieboy3011 5 років тому

      @@glytch5 You have brought up a quite relevant question--so much so that I am going to compare the Chosera/Professional to the Shapton Pro, when sharpening different steels. I even ordered the Naniwa Super Stones so that they can figure into the comparison. I am quite curious to see the results. Naturally, I am limited to the amount and steel type that I can use.

    • @glytch5
      @glytch5  5 років тому

      @@willieboy3011 nice! So even though shapton pro stones are softer than choseras... they still kinda act the same in terms of load up... the chosera 1k in my opinion is their best stone... feels like a really hard wear resistant king stone. I can tell you right now... that you will NOT like the Naniwa super stone for hard steels... it is soft but it does not respond like a traditional king style stone... not muddy at all! Use very light pressure with the super stone... those things are amazing on straight razors.

    I totally can relate to possibly liking stones more than knives. Hahaha I've heard that the best stone in the Shapton glass lineup is the 16 K. I'm somewhat surprised that u don't care much for DMT products. Do u do any straight razor honing? I love my Shapton Pro stones for razors! I'm considering doing a video response to this vid and showing u my stones/gear. Just because we have very similar philosophies surrounding sharpening.

    • @glytch5
      @glytch5  9 років тому +1

      Jason Edge I have a massive beard man, so no straight razors over here lol. It has always interested me. I do really like the 16k shapton, I use it on the edgepro all the time. The stone is so fine you can actually pull your edge through the surface of it to remove burrs.
      I would be totally down to buy a cheap straight razor if you wanted to teach me how to set a bevel on one, I certainly have plenty of strops to use on it afterwords.
      It's not that I don't like DMT, they just don't work for me. I think it is mainly because I went the dia-sharp route, should have went for duo-sharp with the polka dot pattern. The 500 is the best stone in the shapton line up in my opinion.
      Please make a video dude would love to see some good abrasives.

    Just an FYI...Shapton Ha No Kuromaku/Pro #1,000 is equivalent to #700 in Chosera. No, there is no #700 Chosera but that is the micron equivalent. The Shapton #1,000 is coarser than the Chosera #800 and a bit finer than the Chosera #600 is what I’m saying.
    The Shapton Ha No Kuromaku/Pro #1,500 is closer to a true #1,000 stone (around #1,200).

      yeah my 5k is totally worthless. not a single half a centimeter in any area that isn't cracked all the way through. Surprised it doesn't crumble into 1000 pieces. when I run a tool over it I can feel every single crack bump into my edge. I guess it still would work for lapping chisels though. • @glytch5
      @glytch5  3 роки тому

      It has been a while since I looked at those, the HC were the darker "high carbon" stones or something right? I would stick with the regular HR series. I thihnk the HC series were softer or perhaps meant for lower allow steels... in reality it probably won't make a big difference. I really don't buy into the whole "for hard steel, or for soft steel" thing, for the most part they all use the same abrasives. Most hard stones load up but aren't muddy, which make them good for tools, soft stones don't load up but are muddy, which can make them good for knives. Some stones fall between those two areas such as naniwa super stones. They are soft but not very muddy and do load up. Its preference my man!

One trait I've been studying among certain Dunning Krueger groups, are those who speak about topics that obviously interest them speak dramatically followed by heavy nostril breathing...
    Generally right after some sort of tutorial, instruction or lecture of some sort. And the people who do this, tend to also have an uncanny resemblance to one another..

      +Jonathan Ross the benchmade gets better every time I sharpen the secondary edge, you can barely tell it was ever altered now!
      To be honest, I like the 5k prostone, I like pro stones better than chosera in general. The chosera is slightly less hard than the pro stone, but not by much. The chosera requires about a 5 minute or longer soak to really work. The polish is about the same. If you don't like pro stones, you probably won't like chosera stones much either. The only thing the chosera stones do well is, they don't load up for being a hard stone, which allows them to have a little higher cutting speed.

      I really like Chosera stones.... but it is an absolute dice roll.... if you get good ones they will be fine, but if you are like me or many others, they will all crack with normal use! A good alternative that is easily obtainable would be like shapton pro stones...
      For a chisel I am going to recommend shapton pro 1k-5k-8k. That should be plenty to bring a chisel up to polish, then use the 8k for micro bevel. Shapton glass is great too.... however they are a tad softer.
      If those stones cost too much... honestly king 1k is a fantastic chisel stone! You can get them at woodcraft on sale for super cheap a lot of the time, they are real fast cutters. Then you could follow it up with some finer splash n go stones.
      PS: Chosera stones really are not splash n go, even though stores claim they are. They drink water. Hope this helps! In terms of knives... all stones seem to work good with them.. d2 is a pain on water stones in general.

    Question. Is it OK to leave a waterstone immersed in water when not in use?

    • @glytch5
      @glytch5  8 років тому

      +Anna Peterson it greatly depends on the stone, and the duration. Any of the big name modern stones such as Chosera, naniwa super, shaptons you should only have wet while using. I like a brief soak on my choseras, but no more than a couple minutes.
      However stones that require a soak to use like the King 1k, you can leave permanently in water. You could probably do the same with the higher grit kings, but they don't need to be soaked for use anyway. If its a splash n go stone, no, if its a porous soaker you probably can.

    • @glytch5

      Their just as good as any really. They are pretty hard so super wear resistant steels will cause them to load up a little... however they are more load up/glazing resistant than the naniwa super stones, or even shapton pro stones. I would say yes... but the best thing for modern high wear resistant super steels are absolutely diamonds and hard ceramic spyderco style stones. I can't recommend CHosera to anyone due to cracking.... it is a major issue that is hit or miss. They will either crack or they wont. I recommend distilled water only with them!

      From all of my readings, there are no true facts on choseras. Everyone seems to have different experiences with them. A lot of people complain that their Choseras have cracked under the most fragile environments, and you have the people who soak them who have absolutely 0 problems. My Chosera 400 is a splash and go, but have seen other people's who literally bubble in water. I have small hairline cracks on the side but has not hindered my sharpening. My 400 was left in an oven and burned at 350 degrees, base melted off, yet the stone was fine! My chosera 1000 got left in the mountains of Utah in -4 degrees F, and covered in 4 feet of snow, I finally retrieved it yesterday after my friend went back up there, I lapped the stone, removed the base with one of my methods, and it sharpens beautifully. No cracks whatsoever. Choseras are really odd fuckin things.
