You have inspired me to grow China asters! I am also in Illinois with similar weather conditions. Your information is so helpful. I am excited to grow these beautiful flowers.
This couldn’t be more timely! I’ e been looking at China Asters for a while but finally just ordered some yesterday from Farmhouse Flower Farm. Going to the Johnny’s site now for more. Thanks!
Ouu, those are so pretty!! Thanks for sharing your experience and wonderful tips on growing flowers. You inspired me to grow my first cut garden this year. Would love to see a tutorial on how you start asters indoors to transplanting, please? Going to order aster seeds now!
Really appreciate you had video of what they looked like in your garden. I’m glad you deep dived into this flower. They are so pretty in catalogs but no one really grows them. You changed my mind. 👩🌾. Dreamy pastel colors and peony shaped flower 😍.
Have never grown these annuals in my 40 years of flower gardening and now you have me inspired to do so! Were these featured in your dried flower video? You look lovely in such a beautiful blouse😊Thank you for the book title inspiration as well.
Let me know which varieties you try! I have a few dried hazaster hagan and then some dried stems that all the petals fell off of 😆 they’re not the best to dry.
@ChicagoGardener Thank you for offering, how sweet ❤️ I'm all about free seeds! I do not have an Instagram or FB anymore but I sincerely appreciate it. Blessings to you and all you grow.
I noticed China asters in the cut flower sections in online seed stores but always discouraged because I assumed these were difficult. Thanks for shedding some light to them!
Glad you did end up with the Souffle Light Pink China Aster! We're trying it, Lady Coral Lavender, and King Size Apricot along with some Flamingo Feather Celosia to see how it looks with them. For a bit more saturated color in other areas, we also picked up Orange Flash and Pacific Beauty Calendula, King Size Red Strawflower, Triple Berry Mix Scabiosa, and Audray Mix Gomphrena. Hopefully some of it will grow! Oh, I was wondering if you stake your China Asters at all, or is your spacing enough to keep most of them from getting blown over?
I don't stake them because of how close together they are... but with appropriate spacing you might want to for the taller varieties. If I remember, I think King Size Apricot was the most floppy.
In general, the Johnny's Seed packs have always had good germination for me. China Asters do tend to take longer to germinate compared to other flowers I grow. I'd give them at least 3 weeks to see germination.
Last year was my first time growing China asters they were beautiful, my only issue was flopping over to the ground. I grew them in the ground full sun. Do you have any ideas to prevent this ? Thanks
@@iamvip350your issue is not timing. It's most likely a bad batch of seeds, soil too wet, too dry or not the right temperature or planted too deep. CG am I on point? I love the frilly purple one and the pink look alike. Always enjoy your insight.
Agree, it can be so many things! I’d say most important is keeping the soil moist but not too wet. But also some places I have gotten seeds from just aren’t as reliable as others.
I'm growing China Aster Lady Coral Salmon, Cosmos Apricotta, Strawflower Salmon Rose and Zinnia Benary's Giant Salmon Rose this year. I wonder if I should expand my colour pallet!😂

It's always an honor to encourage people to buy more seeds!!
I will be planting apricot aster in February. Beautiful flower!!! Thank you for always giving us your best knowledge on garden topics.
I'm so excited for you! Let me know how they do.

@ thank you for the dried flower tip!
You're right about them being beautiful and underrated! I'd love to try some of these varieties.
If you shoot me a message on instagram I can send you some seeds!

Girl! Thanks for making me place another seed order. 🤣🤣🤣 I had to get those Tower Salmon and the Lady Coral Lavender!
Mission accomplished!!! Let me know how they do for you!
I'm excited to try and grow these this year. (No ideas what varieties I have)
I noticed China asters in the cut flower sections in online seed stores but always discouraged because I assumed these were difficult. Thanks for shedding some light to them!
They're definitely easier for me to keep alive than zinnias. Let me know how they do for you!
I just ordered the aurora zinnias also couldn't resist. I've never grown asters but I think I'll try my hand at it.
China Asters were short for me last year. Took them out this season. Glad you have better luck.
I bet it's the difference in growing zone. We're not nearly as warm as you are!
❤love them all..?do you grow in pots or directly in soil garden?
Everything is in containers!

Have you had any issues germinating certain types of China aster? I have tried some mixed varieties and didn't get any to germinate. Any tips for me?

@@ChicagoGardener thank you. I will definitely give Johnny's a try.
Let me know how it goes!

I would stake them or use a small plant cage to help keep them upright!
Hi, when do you start your aster seeds? I've been trying to grow them for 2 years now and no luck.
8 weeks before last frost, so mid-March for me. Have you had issues with them germinating?
@@ChicagoGardener Yes! I have no success with germinating. I think it's because I'm starting them too early or too late.

No, I absolutely love this!! You have to let me know how it turns out. I also may need to order that strawflower 🤣
Would love to know the two books! Pls and thank you!
The books are "The Encyclopedia of Cut Flowers" and "Flowers and Their Meanings"! I'll link them in the description.
Muy buen video
Thank you!
What are the names of the two books you read out loud to us in this video? Thank you!🌻
I just added them to the description!!
