This past season was my first time trying dahlias. I bought four different dahlia seed packets from Floret. I tried Cancan Girls, Bee’s Choice and Shooting Stars. With shooting stars being my favorite. I am 9B and so I’m going to leave them outside and hope for the best, if we get a lot of rain like last year, I may need to rethink my thinking. The good news is, I have a lot of seed left if they die 😁 I need to check out your friends website and maybe try some tubers
Until I saw you post this I had completely forgotten about the dahlias seeds we saved! My tubers from last year all kicked the bucket so I can't wait to get some started from seed again!
Hello! I am totally new to gardening and seed starting but I am definitely in love! I have only recently found your channel. I love your videos. They are so helpful. Have you ever purchased Dalia’s from K. Van Bourgondien?
I've been watching you grow these for a few years now. I am in zone 9. Looking for perennials. I think you may have just convinced me to dabble in these!😊
Yes it was the dahlia video. It might have been removed because I named the flower company that I purchased the dahlia from. I was inspired to buy the Ottto's Thrill dahlia that you talked about. Thank you.
I loved Penhill watermelon, but it ended up with leaf gall at the end of the season. Last year was my first time growing in containers and I was pleasantly surprised! Going to buy more containers this spring
I have grown in the mostly ground. I have always dug up and stored most successfully wrapped in plastic wrap. But I love the idea of growing then in grow bags and storing in the garage. We too have a heated garage. I love Thomas Edison and cafe au lait. I found the dinner plate hard to work in flower arrangements so I have leaned more toward the water lily, ball and decorative dahlias. I love wizard of Oz (pink), creighton honey, blue bell, eveline, cutie patootie, and sandia shomei.
I need to start growing Dahlias again. They are not hard, but they tended to topple over. I might have neglected to prune adequately so my plants did not get bushy enough. Great info. Thank you.
I love your channel. You’re the reason why I bought gomphrenas after seeing yours lol. And it has been one of my favorites. I just ordered two different varieties of dahlias that will be shipped to me in April. They’ll be planted in the ground though but I’d buy more to plant in a large flower pot. My question is, if they’re planted in the ground, do I need to dig them out of the ground every winter? Or are they like tulip bulbs where I just leave them alone?
I’m so happy you love gomphrena!! What growing zone are you in? If you’re in 8 or higher you can leave them. I do know some people in zone 6 and 7 that put a bit of mulch on top and hope for a mild winter.
@ I’m in zone 7, northeast TN and we do have some freezing temps and snow every now and then. May have to dig them out so they don’t rot 😔 Gorgeous flowers but sounds like a little high maintenance for a plant since I have to do extra work 🤣🙈 But I’ll give it a try. Thank you so much for responding ❤️
I've bought some gomphrena seeds last year to grow this year because of this channel too. Looking forward to drying them and give bouquets to friends and family.
I keep wanting to grow Dahlias (7b/8a MD) - so when you put them in the shower, they don't need any light or anything, it's the warmth from that space that makes them sprout? I guess that's the same for the Gomphrena you put in your guest bathroom to sprout? Can I get other flowering summer bulbs and use this method 6-8 weeks before last frost - it won't hurt though if I put them under grow lights to maybe use that heat to make them sprout (first year trying indoor growing and I don't use a heat mat)? Thanks!
Yes, same process as gomphrena! I don’t give them any light until I see green poking above the soil. I’ve also done this with tulips, but never any other summer bulbs. I feel like it should work though!
I think I read somewhere that dahlias are not true to seed, meaning you could grow them from seed, you won't get a named variety and you would mostly get a single, smaller, less prolific one. You could then save tubers from a variety that looks good to you to continue growing it year after year
I bought a beautiful dahlia plant from the nursery last year and the snails decimated the plant. Ants are also a problem for me with dahlia, but I will probably plant it later when the snails are not plentiful!
I can't believe you've had so many issues with getting the wrong tuber! I've never had a mislabeled tuber and I've probably grown 100+ varieties but I've only ordered from dahlia farms
You need to make it clear , when growing dahlias from seed, you have no idea what sort of dahlias will grow. They generally will be very different from plznt seeds came from. You occasionally get a lovely positive surprise, which is a bonus. Only way to get a replica of any particular dahlia is via tuber or cuttings.

Yes!!! The floret ones right??
@@ChicagoGardener Yup! I am excited to try the Vintage Gold celosia in the ground too. Yours got so big!

I am embarrassed. I went back and watched your video a second time and caught the part where you said you only bought from the garden center.
I haven't! This is actually my first year not getting all my tubers from a local garden center.
I just saw this after I responded!
Lovely selection of dahlias. I overwatered my dahlias , however I will try again.
I did that the first time I tried to grow them! That’s one of the reasons I switched to grow bags, harder for me to overwater 😆
I need to get back into Dahlias this year!! Thank you for sharing your favorites Bethany!!🌸💚🌸💚🌸
You do!! I love having them in my garden. Let me know which varieties you end up getting.
@ I sure will!!🌸💚
Swan island has a ton of dahlias. Lots to choose from and very good tubers
Going to their website now!!
I love your vest!? I saw it on the anthropologie website ❤
That’s where it’s from!! I just got it and love it.

You have to!! Omg especially if you can just leave them out over winter.
@@ChicagoGardener I KNOW! RIGHT??? It seems like such a no-brainer... and I can use as many no-brainers as I can get! 😆😆

There is always room for more containers!

You've just given me a whole bunch of new varieties to look into!!
My favorite is Labyrinth. Just love all the peachy tones! But I just ordered Otto’s Thrill cause I need more pink.
You have to let me know how Otto's Thrill does for you! I've never had another dahlia produce so many flowers.
I need to start growing Dahlias again. They are not hard, but they tended to topple over. I might have neglected to prune adequately so my plants did not get bushy enough. Great info. Thank you.
I use 19” plant cages for support because mine will start to flop later in the season too.

Do you repot them into fresh potting soil in spring? I find my pots are solid roots by the end of the season.
Only if I dig up to divide… which I think I need to do this year. If not, I just add compost and granular fertilizer at the beginning of the season.

Yes! Growing from a tuber division ensures it’s the same as the parent plant. I need to try more from seed and save the ones I like!
❤

I forgot about snails! I actually had some up here this year. I'm assuming they came in with another plant.
Volume on last two videos have been better! Thanks
Yay, thank you for letting me know! I just had to turn it up in the editing software 🤣
Nice
i wrote a very nice comment yesterday. Just curious----why did you remove it?
I haven’t removed any comments! I’ll see if UA-cam hid it.
I can’t find it 😭 was it on this video or another one?
I can't believe you've had so many issues with getting the wrong tuber! I've never had a mislabeled tuber and I've probably grown 100+ varieties but I've only ordered from dahlia farms
I’m so envious!! That makes sense if they’re coming from dahlia farms. I just want to grow Penhill watermelon 🤣
It is pronounced WA-HA-KA (Oaxaca) 😊
Thank you!!!

I actually filmed that but then cut it from the video because I thought I was talking too much 😆 I’m leaving in all my rambling from now on!
