I laugh at those people as gundam is as big as it has ever been in the west. its mostly because the western community has ZERO knowledge of anime history that exist pre-toonami.hell you mention space battleship yamato, the show that allowed gundam to be created in the first place, and people stare at you blankly.

    Actually the first mecha in Gundam universe (the UC timeline) were designed to operate and fight in space and low gravity, which makes them far more believable (as some ppl usuallly cite square-cube law as a reason Gundam can't be built)

    • @kamenwaticlients
      @kamenwaticlients 5 років тому +34

      I've been wondering about that law. People site it but doesn't the material the Gundam is made matter just as much? I feel like the use of that law and other things it's just a way for people to hate on the idea cause it doesn't fit their world view on future tech. I mean a lot of rules says an airplane made of solid lead can't fly and we just used that as the example then human flight isn't possible or we can make the plane from wood or aluminum instead.

    • @mikestuckinthemiddleofnope8783
      @mikestuckinthemiddleofnope8783 5 років тому +32

      yeah, the square cube law i think gets misused. the real point of using it is that you need to take into account how much something will weigh. material weight is kinda everything but lets say instead of trying to build a mech thats 8 meters talls, lets focus on making one thats under 15 feet and using a high horse-power diesel engine, something in the 800-1200 HP ranges. make the frame out of titanium or tungsten if thats reasonable and then use a combo of depleted uranium and silicon carbinde for the armor with a thickness of about 5-6 inches and i'm willing to bet the total weight will come under 15 tons. anyone who knows about military vehicles will know that thats actually really light for a fighting vehicle. i think the striker series weighs about 18-20 tons. also in terms of weapons, we've already got two of them that'll do the job and kill pretty much anything as long as it can hit it, and those would be the hellfire missile and the 30mm autocannon familes. any mech armed with those will be extremely dangerous. now the real choice to make is, can you make a legged combat robot that has superior agility to a wheeled vehicle. the trade off in simplicity is, in theory, higher quality. frankly i'd lean towards quality in this case. the other real choice is, do you want the operator to be inside the machine or remote-manning it from another location, which btw both of those are perfectly reasonable for different factors but thats an even longer tangent. sure, there's probably a lotta holes to poke so have at it, peace out. EDIT when i mention staying under 8 meters, i mean lets stay under 15, feet had to put that in there.

      If real life Gundams were made, they would likely be much shorter than anything in the series. Not necessarily the square cube law that would hold it back, so much as general cost, weight, and unnecessary size. Mobile Suits are still very fictional, as is their world, so giant hangers and warships can easily be conjured up for the series.

If you look at the recent Gundam: The Origin OVA, you can see that mobile suits were developed from lunar mining machines designed to combat the Earth Federation's doctrine of long range artillery bombardment. It reminds me very much like how Imperial Japan developed carriers and naval aviation to combat America's surface fleet doctrine before and at the very beginning of the Second World War.

    Mobile suits even make sense. You get all the capabilities of an infantryman wearing powered armor, his ability to maneuver in the air or under water or in space without wasting fuel just as astronauts are trained to do (and can enhance it with bursts from strategically placed engines), you are large and armored enough that anything short of very large weapons are harmless to you and those weapons track very slowly and so are easily to dodge or in the case of missiles you can shoot them down or jam them, and for anything else you carry a large, thick shield. Mobile suits also carry a ton of anti-infantry weapons in the skirt and ankles though these are almost never part of the series because it's about giant robots butchering each other, but it's there and no less devastating and useful for tactical flexibility.
    It's a pretty darn good weapon system and with its jumpjets you can lock down a city with just a few of them provided you don't care about enemy civilian casualties. Which you shouldn't because otherwise your enemies will just keep using them as meatshields to kill your men from behind. The sheer amount of enemy armor, artillery, etc. it can kill relative to its own expense as well as its advanced sensors and CIWS renders basically other military combat machine obsolete. That is to say, those that aren't used for transportation or logistics.
    And if that wasn't enough, hydraulics to absorb weight and force are pretty cheap. It's just some tubes filled with something. The servos are also dirt cheap as they're basically just magnetic discs that use electrical fields to move. The whole mech is extremely cost-effective and very easy to put together and maintain. Really, the only expensive part is the controls which seem to watch your brain activity to understand the details on the general commands the physical controls are used for.
    And for those who think an MS would sink into the ground under its weight, no. The ground is not made of water. Dirt, sand, etc., have extremely low maximum compression levels so your mech will be totally fine. Unless there's an empty aquafer or pocket under your feet, then it's poof sinkhole sucks to be you.

    I wonder if anyone hasn't caught onto another connection between any mecha genre:
    They are just suits of medieval armor, just powered and really big. Modern day knights and samurai, if you will. Code Geass is a good example of this, Gundam certainly is. One could even make an argument for BattleTech and even Robotech. It's all about rival nations/houses having the best armor for their 'knights'.

    Too many people forget that Mobile Suits from the Gundam Franchise were intended to be space craft. And AMBAC (Active Mass Balance Auto-Control) is based in real physics. It is akin to how a human performs flips and spins. Think high divers, dancers, extreme sports flips and tricks, even astronauts in space, or people enjoying a Zero-G simulation flight.
    This movement style allows them to use electricity for rotation and such in space for inertial flight. It also combines with thruster in combat to provide reduced propellant consumption.
    Now while drones and the like might take over combat. Mobile Suit style craft are likely to be made for construction, mining, and the like. Especially when we inevitably move into space.

    Interesting that you'd mention drone warfare, since in multiple Gundam series they also use drones to fight (to some extend).

    5:28 common misconception. This anti aircraft gun platform is based off the German Flakpanzer Gepard, in most respects they're nearly identical in design, minus the tank hull, and armament. The Gepard pre-dates the 1980s MSV versions of the Guntank, and not coincidentally, I wouldn't be surprised if the MSV versions of the Guntank were inspired by the Gepard, not the other way around. A lot of mecha and weapons used in gundam have real world inspiration, ie the weapons were designed with features from real world vehicles, and even infantry weapons. Like the Zeon Raketan Bazooka is literally a Panzershrek. The Standard Zeon Pistol/SMG are made to look semi like a Lugar and MP40. The Zaku I Sniper's rifle is a MG42, and the Geara Zulu's beam machine gun is an STG-44. Lets not forget the sturmfaust being a mecha size panzerfaust.

    Since we'd just need powerful hydraulics to absorb shock (not provide movement) and powerful servos (to provide movement), both of which are quite cheap and very easily to build in large numbers very quickly, it is very possible to mass-produce mobile suits in the modern day. The problem, however, is that our energy production for the scale of the suit is too low for it to be worth a damn in combat. I'm not sure if the materials we use to transfer electricity would be able to transfer enough to the servos to matter anyway or if the servos would survive the amount of energy required to move sufficiently for combat. We *can* build the materials needed in incredibly tiny amounts, but they only last a fraction of a second before the molecular bonds fall apart again.

    Funny thing is, I think Gundam, in a way, got away from Tomino. The message in Gundam has always been 'war is bad' but everyone watching the show just loves the cool robots battling. This is apparently touched upon in the Gundam OVA series "War in the Pocket". Where children obsess over how 'cool' war is, when it's happening far away and then have to reconcile that when the war comes to them.

    Understandable why there is such a fascination with giant mecha suits. As fiction they are marvelously expressive and convey both The Hero's Journey and technology very well. Robots are abstractions of people, as in they take over certain specialized tasks like vacuum cleaning or welding, so a mech-robot is immediately a vision of the holy grail of robotics and they fill the rule of cool. Too much charm not to become completely obsessed over.
