The card art shows a bursting bomb in the center of his rank insignia, making him an E-9, Master Gunnery Sergeant (3 up 4 down with bursting bomb). This means that he was promoted from Gunny to Master Sergeant and then to Master Guns. To be a Sergeant Major, he would have been promoted from Gunny to First Sergeant and then Sergeant Major.
Great review as always. It is fitting that as I write this comment, the date is 11/10/13 the 238th Birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. This was one of my favorite figures as a kid. I do remember being a little disappointed that the stickers fell off so easily. It would also have been a great touch if the designers made the saber removal from the scabbard. The BLIPTV video is also great with the music and extended scenes, which I would commend to everyones attention.
Another great review! But you didn't mention all of the inaccuracies in Gung Ho's uniform. His shirt (blouse) should be black, and his pants (trousers) should be dark blue. I find it odd that Hasbro made those two obvious errors in this figure. Maybe more trademark issues? He should also have red and gold hash marks on his lower sleeves (that denote how many years he has been a Marine).
Hi Kevin, Happy Christmas and happy holidays. I really like the suppositions you make on certain figures we don't have a wide information about, specially 1987 and 1988 characters. Great, revealing and very logical this information about 1987 Gung-Ho being like a guide to the new rawhides. That really gives a sense to why his outfit is like that and all of the sudden makes him again a more playable figure. To follow that line, I think 1987 Zanzíbar was made to be something like a new Dreadnoks leader. I say this for 2 particular reasons: first, he comes with a special to him little vehicle, and when Hasbro did this with other figures I think they wanted to give them a special rank, position or importance (Serpentor, Sgt. Slaughter, Zartan, 1988 Destro). And the second reason is the amount of metallic paint the figure has: it seems Hasbro also tried to give an important rank or position to some figures by giving them a notorious amount of metallic paint such as 1982 & 1986 Hawk, 1983 Duke (his shoulder screws and emblem are golden), 1985 Flint, 1982, 1984 & 1987 Cobra Commander, 1983 & 1988 Destro, 1985 Tomax & Xamot, 1986 Serpentor or 1985 Keel Haul. Zanzíbar, as these examples, has much silver paint all around his body.
The only thing that doesn't completely complement, and I know it is GI Joe, is that if he was in Marine dress blues, he would be expected to be clean shaven. If that happened, though, it would not be Gung Ho...
As Jack Mayoffer says, the rank on his arms is a Master Gunnery Sergeant rank. Maybe you could add a tab on the footage of the video you comment this on.
Hello Kevin. A have a question for ,about G.I.Joe Devilfish: a 25th figurine can fit inside the Devilfish ??? And also, what you take to remove old stickers and clean the old glue?? For my U.S.S. Flagg. Thank for the info .Great to watch your video
I don't have any modern figures to try it, but I'm sure any new figure would fit. I did a video on sticker removal here: G.I. Joe Repair Tip: Cleaning Removing Re-Gluing Stickers
I forgot to mention an nco or non commisionend officer in the marines is only the ranks of E-4 Corporal or E-5 Sgt. after that they are known as a SNCO or Staff NCO from E-6 Staff Sgt. onward. Just for accuracy! thanks again for the video.
Hi love the video as most of all your videos. As others have stated those chevrons most closely identify with master gunnery sgt. It looks like an exploding bomb i have seen this. i tried to input a photo but it does not seem to take. also feet should be pointed outward and that is known as the position of attention (poa) I can probably answer some questions regarding the GI Joes as it relates to the actual Marine information. Also I think they may have done the title Marine because you earn that title any one can be in the army, navy, air force, coast guard etc. but once you complete marine boot camp you earn the title and are are a marine.
The stands with the two pegs (one for vintage feet and one for modern feet) come from Marauders Inc stores.ebay.ca/Marauder-Gun-Runners?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 they are expensive but worth it for figures that have tight foot holes (like Zap, Duke, Zartan and Roadblock). The other stands are from SmallJoes smalljoes.com/cat/G.I.-GI-JOE-display-case-clamshell-storage-bag-figure-stand-6.shtml they are cheaper, but lower quality.

I always wanted this figure because the ceremonial uniform represented another side of military life, besides combat.
he reminds me of Bennet in the 80's Schwarzenegger action movie Commando

master gunny!!! he's a master gunny!!!! also, i wish they would have put service stripes on him.
The rank is, U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Major on the figure, but on the box, it is Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant. Both are a paygrade of, E-9.

Nice review! That was one of my favorite 'Joes.

Noticed this as well, was going to say something but you have taken care of it, also thank you for your service sir semper fidelis
dam i had this figure
I thing the chevron is supposed to be Master Gunnery Sergeant. A bursting bomb would be hard to paint on a small scale.
who is the dude at red ninja's left side? it look like Flint but carries gun in a holster in his chest right side.
It's a 1987 Lt Falcon.
The rank looks either Sergeant Major, or Master Gunnery Sergeant.
where did you get your different battlestands
