    1987 wasn't "the height of popularity" for "Miami Vice." The best seasons were the first and second. The 1986-1987 season was when it became routine, and then things got repetitive and even weird after that. It was obvious Chuckles was inspired by Crockett's character from "Miami Vice" and not so much his appearance. His face actually looks more like Robert Palmer. The artwork on the Spy Hunter arcade game also resembled Don Johnson. I never got the figure, finding him too simple, but now I look back and see how he could have been useful if I would have played in a more elaborate manner.

    I remember one line in that comic. A secretary told Chuckles that he needs an appointment and Chuckles replies, "I'm trouble and trouble doesn't make an appointment."
    But how effective can Chuckles be going undercover. Even with different clothes his build and personality would stand out. I can picture a Cobra agent saying to and undercover Chuckles, "hahaha You're a really cool guy, Smith. You know you remind me of this other funny guy I met a few months ago. He wasn't afraid to head butt a cop car the way you just did either. Come to think of it, if you put on a Hawaiian shirt and dyed your hair ... --- You're HIM!!!"

      Growing up Full House was one of my favorite TV shows! I got to see Dave Coulier do his stand up show back in 2001, and he was hilarious. Also I own one of his comedy album called Songs In The Key Of Beaver, despite it being aimed at kids, I really enjoyed listening to it.

      @user-si9fx4xb6v 4 роки тому +2

      As a kid, I used him during play time to spy on Cobra and gather information as Chuckles file card suggests. Despite his strange look, I agree that he could pose as a mercenary in South America or South East Asia no problem. Looking back at him, it would have been nice if Hasbro gave him Lady Jaye's mini video camera, Sneak Peek's binoculars or some other tools for an Intelligence operative to use to gather information.
      I am glad that his future appearances in both the main G.I. Joe series and Special Missions used him to better effect. Larry Hama even him appear towards the end of the Marvel series, long after his action figure was no longer being sold. I like how his file name of Philip Provost is honor of a friend of Larry Hama's, like how Barbecue's file name of Gabriel Kelly is a tribute to another friend of Hama's.

    When I was six or seven years old, I vaguely remember watching some news program maybe 60 minutes. They where doing a story on GIJOE and they had a ceo or line developer said that Chuckles was based on his appearance.

    • @user-si9fx4xb6v
      @user-si9fx4xb6v 4 роки тому +2

      It makes sense that was the case, since at the time of Chuckles release Hasbro was modeling the faces of certain action figures on real people. Bazooka is modeled after New England Patriots player Steve Grogan, Leatherneck is modeled after Hasbro illustrator Ron Rudat, Law is based on Hasbro executive Kirk Bozigian( who was responsible for the launch of the 3 and 3/4 scale G.I. Joe line up) and most famously Tunnel Rat was based on Larry Hama. Also, at one point a female secretary at Hasbro, was used for a model for a planned Baroness action figure that would have been released in 1995 had the decision not been made to end the line in 1994.

    While I never thought the Hawaiian shirt was too out of place on Chuckles, I got tired of the sports themed figures as a kid. Bazooka, Red Dog, The Fridge, and Hardball all drove me nuts. And then Capt. Grid Iron came along with his football grenades and really made things dumb.

    Thank you for these reviews HCC, I just love how in depth they are and your sense of humor is great. I love Chuckles too, kind of a cool figure. I have a later version of him without sleeves. They gave more of the muscle detail he deserved on that figure but unfortunately he didn't have the working pistol holster. That's okay, he came with a badass sub machine gun and a street sweeper shot gun.

    It's very odd that a talkative character like Chuckles had no lines in the movie, and my theory is that Don Johnson was originally intended to play him, until they decided to switch Chuckles and Falcon's roles around. He would have filled the same role Falcon ended up in, as a ladies man and Duke's half brother, especially since he looks a lot more like Duke (with the blonde hair, and green legs) than Falcon does.

    "Criminal Investigation Division" was an earlier name for what is now part of the United States Army Criminal Investigation Command and "CID" is still used in reference to their agents. But the real agency uses a singular Investigation as opposed to the toy's plural Investigations. Long story short, he's Army.

    I was never a big fan of Chuckles either, just never could figure out his place in the Joe team, then I read his dossier in the Essential guide to Gijoe and come to find out, he is part of Military Intelligence and the CIA. Plus when the top brass were putting together the new team they turned to Chuckles for his investigative work to sort out and find worthy candidates. His search led him to find the first two operatives of the modern Gijoe team: Hawk and Stalker. Of course they had no idea Chuckles was involved.

    Hello!
    The correct occupation is CID Special Agent, and they work for the US Army Criminal Investigation Division or CID for short. Also, fun fact, some real CID agents do come from the military intelligence field. But CID agents can come from any other Military Occupation, so a CID agent can be a prior Army Band member, Administrative clerk or even former Green Berets. Also, there was an awesome little known movie called Off Limits. It was about two CID agents in Vietnam (Willem DaFoe and Gregory Heinz) who investigated murders by a possible high ranking US general. It would seem that Chuckles was maybe somewhat inspired by Willem’s character in that movie. Great video BTW. Laters!

      It would not surprise me at all if that was part of the inspiration along with Magnum P.I. and Miami Vice both of which were airing on TV at the time of Chuckles release. After the 1960's G.I. Joe action figures take their name from the 1945 World War II movie, The Story Of G.I. Joe, so it does stand to reason that Hasbro would mine other movies and some tv shows for inspiration of new action figures.

      Indeed it does, the pistol that Hawk version 2 has is the closest I have seen a handgun in the vintage line come to looking like a real world weapon. The Colt Commander is not a bad choice for some one in the Intelligence and C.I.D. work, given that they would need a handgun that is easy to conceal.

    If I remember correctly, was not Chuckles used as part of the DEF? Headmaster and the like? It seems as though, SWAT, CID, Ahem, GI Joe partnered with other agencies. Chuckles is dressed for Southern United States, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, trying to look cool like Huggy Bear. Unfortunately he comes off more like Anthony Lapaglia's character in So I Married an Axe Murderer. Also, think about how Arnold dressed in Commando: Hawaiian shirt, khakis, and boots. Great review. Hasbro should have offered that holster as DTC items in packs of five!

    • @user-si9fx4xb6v

      No, Chuckles sadly never appeared again in the vintage line after his first action figure. Despite this, Larry Hama still used him in the comic book series in the later issues( Chuckles went undercover at Destro''s Scottish castle as a gamekeeper). He would have been a natural fit for D.E.F. in my imagination, given that to bust drug dealers law enforcement personnel use undercover operations to get close to their targets.

    Another thumbs-up review! Chuckles is no Lady Jaye! I like the holster a lot, but the gun sculpt isn't very good. The Hawaiian shirt makes him a fun looking figure (but don't match the pants), but he doesn't look like Don Johnson, facially. The figure looks closer to Hannibal (George Peppard) from the A-Team. That said, "inspiration" doesn't mean that he has to look like the guy. Just that they were going for that sort of feel. I'm not really sure that they succeeded either way. The figure is a little strange, but compared to Refrigerator Perry, Chuckles doesn't seem so out of place as a Joe. Love the Miami Vice segments of the review!

      Kyle Voltti yeah....he fits the role of undercover agent in Southeast Asia during the 1970's and 1980's, like what was shown on tv back then. That's why i liked the figure.

    I wasn't too surprised when I found the figure of Chuckles wasn't released in the UK, and only in the States (it could have been to do with him always being mute in the movie) [but, had we gotten the third season, post-movie, where we'd have seen *more* of the 1987 figures, as well as the 1988 figures, would he have spoken *then*?]

      Possibly, I do not recall if Hasbro had considered working with Sunbow on a third season of the cartoon series. I do believe that G.I. Joe cartoon writer Buzz Dixon said in one interview that had a third season been done, he would have tired to bring the show back towards its roots and keep out the stranger characters/ elements like Serpentor and Cobra La that the second season and the movie had brought us. Chuckles might have gotten a chance to speak then, I would think.

    Chuckles was one of the very few figures I did not buy at this point in time. He didn't have much of a role in the original comics. But the movie made him mute which was bizarre. But the main reason I didn't get it was it didn't look like... anything. If he'd been in a suit or jeans and a t-shirt I would've thought he was cool and unique. But the top half is vacation and the bottom is army. Makes no sense.

      If I recall, they made him mute because they couldn't afford to pay someone to VA him, since they got Don Johnson to play Falcon.

    I don't know if I would put him in my top 10. definitely top 15. i watched a parody video showing how 007(Daniel Craig) is really chuckles or vise versa. I paired him with law and order and junkyard and mutt.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  8 років тому +1

      He could have introduced some cloak-and-dagger, 007-style stories to G.I. Joe, and I guess he did somewhat in Special Missions. I have been told he was used well in more recent comic books, but I haven't read them yet.
