The thing that makes the biggest difference...PAPER! Don't use "marker paper" for water based markers. Use watercolour paper. It's like night and day! :)
Mixed media paper also works for water-based markers, they're just lighter GSM weight so they take fewer layers before curling. Water-based pigments and dyes are available in many mediums(tubes and palettes, pencils, crayons, inks, and markers) and they all blend nicely with a reservoir water brush.
Loved this video. I personally feel like this is comparing apples to oranges. They are both REALLY GREAT products. They achieve two very DIFFERENT looks. They are both absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
Adorable illustration as always! My two cents about water-based markers as someone that uses both: I think that they are both great. For water-based markers, I mainly use the Tombow Dual Brush Pens or Marvy Uchida Color in markers. I discovered that working on the smooth/shiny side of poster board paper or a thick, smooth cardstock works wonders for water-based markers. Although they lay on slightly lighter than what they would look like on something like bristol board or marker paper, they blend beautifully. They do smudge quite a bit as the ink sort of sits on top so you can work with it easily. With inking, I always just do it before or after, leaving a day or two before/after the coloring. This for me is helpful as many water-based brush pen nibs are felt-tipped, so I avoid fraying the nibs quickly if I used them on other paper that is not as smooth.
I don't know how I never made the connection that water-based markers could be used for watercolor techniques! I think for this illustration I actually like the water-based marker one better because the texture of the fur suits the image better than the smoother blending of the alcohol markers. I haven't seen a video comparing alcohol and water based markers of the same brand before, so it's a good one!
I love how you showed the effects of both. Since they don't affect each other I would have liked to have seen a third one where you used them together as even another example of how to use their strengths which should compliment each other. Of course you would have to also compare that on different paper as well to find the best suitable match.
Tip : If you want the water based marker to be smoother like alcohol marker , i definitely to use colorless blender to smooth the paper. So when you color it with water based markers on the paper that smoothed out by colorless blender it creates smooth effect just like alcohol marker . I got this idea from beret nice on her video in her channel .
I blend with my waterbased markers either by touching the tips together (doesn't actually stain!) and then colouring, or by colouring on a plastic lid (or palette I guess if I had one) and then blending the colours together on that then colouring. Plus they do work with water, so I've used my waterbrush pens to pick up from the plastic lid to make lighter shades with them. Found that works really well. Since most of the art I do is colouring in colouring books, I've not seen the point of buying any alcohol based markers as they are more expensive and would just bleed through.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!! It made sooo much sense breaking things down for a newbie like me! I appreciate all the time you took to make This detailed content!! 💜💜💜💜
yeah you def cant compare the 2, made for different purposes. just like oils and acrylics, both have good and bad points to them depending on what you need them for :)
This was very informative and comprehensive. I rarely use alcohol based markers, so always am fascinated to listen to how you choose colored and blend them.
Wow, you killed it on this video. Thought I knew it all, but watched anyway and learned a lot from you. Impressive and most helpful. Thanks pretty lady. Subscriber from Florida USA
ooooooh, i loved your explanations!! now i understand why all my liners were acting like that except my fineliners. thanks for clearing that up! and i love how sally never gives a damn: "what was all that ruckus about?" :3
Such a great video, I love how thorough and informative you always are! Thank you for the work you do. I would love to see colourfastness tests some day!
i simply love your art style ! . could be so cool if you one day made a coloring book ! :D .. have a nice day ! love from your nr. 1 fan from Denmark 😁😁
Thank you for this video. It was very educational(is that a word).I petsonal like to use watercolor paper ,the smooth side, for the waterbased markers. I have the Zig markers IT can handle water much better.Hot pressed watercolorpaper works also very well for me.
Thanks for this video, I really enjoyed it! I don’t use alcohol markers enough to be able to choose a favorite but it was fun to watch the comparison. Love the illustration 💕
@@Kattvalk Hii Katt, i hope u answer my ask :) For custom phone skin made from vinyl, thats means plastic surface. Which the best ones, alcohol or water base?
Nice thorough explanation! 😊 I like both arts. I'm more familiar with waterbased art supplies, so I will choose that I guess. But then again, it means that the printer ink is both alchohol proof and water proof.. right? 🤔
Since I've used both markers, I will throw my personal opinion out there. I like alcohol based markers better than water based markers because the water based markers tend to shred the paper when you try to layer the colors or blend them.
this helped, my mom is getting me water color markers for Christmas i cant remember witch one she show'd me but i cant remember what ones she told me that i was getting water color markers because they are arriving on the 30th 5 days after Christmas. Its the 14th of December
I feel bad, I just put in an order to Arteza for the 60 set of everblend markers and a set of fine liners....I did it about 5 minutes before I watched this. ☹🖤🖤
do waterbased float more out to the sides? I have some sharpies and computerpapir, no issue at all. Got some new markers, and they say their are alcoholbased (but should be stored horizontally like waterbased?), and i cannot paint with these. They float out instantly, making it impossible to stay within lines...
both are good to compare each other, but you must think that you use them in an bit different way ^^ i just love both, but tend more to water based markers, because blending them with a brush ad water is much easier. and to be truth: alcohol marker are more expensive and dont least as long als water markers, that is my experience with both medias ;-)
I had some Prismacolor Scholar water-based markers. I hated them. They weren't any better than Crayolas, and ate away the paper and didn't blend. I'm kind of heavy handed though and if I don!t go light and use fresh markers in a painterly way I always eat away at the paper.
I actually need to say that I really don't 'prefer' anything when it comes to art mediums at all, as long as the quality is good and not like the Michael's markers for example, but what kind of art mediums I use really depends on what kind of art I want to create, and that includes texture, the way it turns out on the paper, whta kind of paper I use etc, I even like to mix different art mediums in ways that maybe some people wouldn't usually do, 'cause like I said; It totally depends on what I want to create in that very moment and how I want it to look in the end. Even the style of my drawing and painting varies in that way and I like to experiment with different combinations of art mediums and even crafting materials sometimes. My level of creativity is very wide and mostly just for fun and because it makes me feel good, so therefor I really don't prefer anything, it all depends on what I feel like in that precise moment. Plus sometimes when you 'make mistakes' that can turn out to be some of the best things you've ever done some times, not to mention educational. So yeah, I'm just rambling on, sorry about that. Väldig bra, intressant och informativ video för övrigt! Jag är imponerad av dina alster här!
huh... when i used the everblend markers, when i went to blend the shade with the base, the base color made the first layer of ink all splotchy and everything. is it because of the paper i used? i dont have any marker paper, just a5 cardstock ):

I wonder if there are people who actually use those bags to carry their whole marker collection around
there ABSOLUTELY is. i have a friend who carries their copics in a bag like that
I definitely do
When you added water to the twi marker on bristol board it blew my mind ! 😅

I am on a Kattvalk binge and I cannot get enough! You are wonderful!
Love these two versions a lot! It is hard to chose between the two types of markers - both have their pros and cons but look beautiful 😁
This is a really good explanation of the differences between water based and alcohol based markers!
The tombow waterbased markers blend beautifully and they come with a blender in each kit.

How have I gone my whole life without knowing that 'normal' textas/markers can be used as watercolours??!! omg. Must try.
And Sharpies are actually alcohol markers ....
I found this very interesting. I'm a sucker for water color markers. :)

Just got into Alcohol Markers and I am totally awaken to my new favorite medium , I also have the tombows as well.
I like both !
Thank you.. I learned so much things from this video
You can use watercolor paper for the water based markers. They dont eat it as much as bristolboard.
In my experience they eat much more on the watercolor paper when drawing with the pens directly on it and that’s why I chose Bristol board
@@Kattvalk Hii Katt, i hope u answer my ask :)

Damn, I should've watched this before buying those watercolour markers. Now I realize alcohol-based was what I was looking for 🤣
Cool video! Could you colour with the alcohol markers and draw lineart/add details with the water based markers? Sound like it should work, right?
Love this!! Good work with the comparison
Nice thorough explanation! 😊

Thanks for this comparison! Are the water-based market lightfast/archival? I know alcohol-based markers aren't.
This is so interesting and educational! Thank you!
I’ve never used marker but... I’m curious now... 👀
So THAT'S why my line art smudges so much while I'm coloring. I got the wrong type! 😅
Always test the compatibility of your supplies. I made a habit of doing that the moment I get new supplies, and it's such a life saver!
This was very informative, thank you! I was just wondering which markers should I buy for my birthday :) 21y.o. yay!
this video was awesome!
Very nice demo thx for telling it 👍
Thanks a lot for the comparison and tips! Very helpful for a beginner. Only had to watch with x0.75 speed as it went quite fast ))
Great video! Thank you!

With alcohol marker you always have to keep the paper wet in order to blend smoothly
actually you shouldn't use water with alcohol based markers :)

Water based markers, you should use watercolour paper..
Since I wanted to draw with the markers too I thought Bristol board was the best choice, it works great with watercolors too!
