About twenty yrs ago, my friend told me what this song is about as well as she could. She got it very close to the translation provided here, but she said the captain really messed up when he told Sadhbh that he could see by her worn out clothes that she needed a man like himself. My friend thought she was probably offended by this and that Sadhbh and the captain didn't get together.
He did not, he just learned the pronunciation of the language properly, unlike most Gaelscoil and Gaelcholáiste students (sadly) who think it's cooler to speak Irish with English phonetics
