Liams explanation at the start is quite helpful. But yes I do agree that songs can transcend literal meaning

There were many rocks (stony outcrops in the landscape) throughout the countryside. The people worshipped at these secret locations. If they were discovered by the invader, they would be severely punished. They continued to practice their faith worship under pain of discovery and persecution.
I never meant to write all that... but the song is wonderful and this performance is itself nothing short of holy. Moving and beautiful.....

Colette Olney In Tomhaggard in Wexford the Priest was shot dead on Christmas morning in 1653.
In 1999 the Parish held a memorial mass on Christmas morning to "remember" and to mark the new millennium. He intended it to a one off but people requested that it be continued! There is a ballad of Tomhaggard and I did an interview with the PP in 1999. Both on You Tube.
It's powerful to be there at 8 in morning regardless of weather! They use the chalice from 1653🙏🙏

There is a Mass rock in a field two or three kilometres from my childhood home in Co. Wexford. The rock was discovered by British redcoats and rolled into the nearby river during penal times. In 1973, several local people decided to use a crane to rescue it and reinstall it in its original position in the middle of a field, three fields in from the road. Mass is celebrated there very year on the Monday evening nearest the feast of St. James, patron of the parish. I try and attend when I am home. It's a very special and sacred occasion, celebrating Mass outside in the heart of the cosmos and remembering the price our forefathers and mothers paid to live out their faith.

And then the priest hunters, bounty hunters, like the half mad Barry Lowe, Capt Turner, Jon Garzia, Henry Oxenard, Sean na Sagart and the hanged Edward Tyrell. Too few remember them, or their vile pay master, Lord Dawson a fine street in Dublin still named after him. Funny how we honour Dawson, time for a street name change.

The lyrics in both gaeilge and english
    Gaeilge
An raibh tú ar an gcarraig?
Nó an bhfaca tú féin mo ghrá?
Nó an bhfaca tú gile agus finne
    Agus scéimh na mná?
Nó an bhfaca tú an t-úll
Ba chumhra a's ba mhilse bláth?
Nó an bhfaca tú mo vailintín?
Nó a' bhfuil sí dá cloí mar 'táim?
Ó bhí mé ag an gCarraig,
agus chonaic mé mé féin dó ghrá
    Ó chonaic mé gile
    finne agus scéimh na mná
    Ó chonaic mé an t-úll
ba chumhra is ba mhilse bláth
    Agus chonaic mé do Vailintín
agus ní sí á cloí mar 'táim.
    English:
    Were you on the rock?
Or did you yourself see my love?
Or did you see the brightness, the fairness
Or the beauty of the woman?
Or did you see the finest apple
That came from the healthiest flower?
    Did you see my valentine?
Is she being persecuted as they are saying?
    I was on the rock
And I did see your love
And I saw the brightness, the fairness
And the beauty of the woman
And I did see the finest apple
That came from the healthiest flower
    And I saw your valentine
She is being persecuted as they are saying

Fair play to Marketa and Glen too, the Swell Season project and the movie 'One' also contain many soulful and beautiful performances too.

oh yeah, definitely, i know this is sean nós, but when he is just improvising and a little, the way his vocals get kind of barky sounds native american. the rest of the music is pretty irish sounding.
so it definitely reminded me a bit of native american music, even if he wasn't influenced by it.

    TIMELESS
    FIELDS
    (the hedge Masses)
    The Irish had their hedges
    The English had their homes
The French they had their Vendee
    The U.S. roots in loam.
    Way out in mid-west cornfields
Out past the waves of grain
Stand right the schools and churches
That put all else to shame.
    They labor in the pasture
    They labor in the field
    And everyday the Holy Mass
    Where priestly-powers wield
The force to take the whole grain
That swells from roots in loam...
    And generate the Bread of Life;
    The fields of timeless Rome!
