The goal shouldn't be to keep anyone out, but especially auditors. The GOAL should be "Hello to all 1st Amendment Auditors! Come in, check us out & tell us how we are doing" That's what you should be striving for.

Absolutely. Everyone has forgotten how democracy actually works. Everything needs to be transparent so that the people can judge how to respond appropriately, wether that be via voting, protest, petition or whatever. The meaning of democracy needs to be taught in schools in all democratic countries so that all citizens, including public servants, are continually reminded of their responsibilities in a free society.
When I had a store years ago, I wish I had UA-camrs to help promote me. Just if public servants would look at it as, we can look great at out jobs. We can also make our city look good for the world to see. People that have a lot to hide hate a camera.

rewatch 2:20 not only does sean back up out of the office after being told absolutely he takes a step backwards and starts his monologue. I've seen him once set aside the camera (left it rolling and pointed at the desk, but free'd up his hands for the cordial respect that you are claiming isn't being offered, during verbally making a police complaint, and that was entirely appropriate, that allowed the other person to offer this cordial respect, one also has to be postured to receive. Put the camera aside and take a seat like anyone else who's been invited into an office with a desk and chairs would do. There are plenty of ledges and other tables, and other chairs to set a camera down upon. I think this channel does some of the better auditing work and has been rewarded with the viewership it deserves. I think this is an excellent point for how things could be done differently, despite being the high point of the curve. There is also wavering points of view through out the 25 minute encounter, and yes his personal first amendment was touched upon, but the dominate point of view that's made clear by the end of the video is that the goal is for change to happen with in the confines of the visit. I believe one could be left with a genuine expression of concerns, and not expect anything to happen that moment, upon reflection, have the right thing be done... and still be able to hold the government and it's elected or appointed officials accountable for behavior that happened between then, thanks to the documentation done by the auditors. The only reason why someone would want something to happen then and there is for the entertainment value.

video context aside, I was taught to do this when you meet someone. I would also think as a public servant, this is something that absolutely should be done.

The backing up whilst initiating a conversation whilst trying to get the sign back in frame… there is just a better way to initiate a conversation whilst recording in this particular instance, that would allow space and open one’s body language to receive that physical respect that you think would be naturally offered.

and while I may not have been taught to "shake a cameraman's hand", I was certainly taught to shake someone's hand when you meet them. the administrator could've stood up (common courtesy) and invited him in to sit.

@@LAkadianlegally, yes you can discriminate for reasons aside from protected classes, and it happens all the time. Not that it should be done, but it is. You can call it discrimination and it might be discrimination, but you don’t get legal protection unless the discrimination is on the basis of a protected class under you state or federal legislation. And even then there might be some types of discrimination that are legal even if it is on the basis of being a protected class. Don’t confuse morality and legality. It is likely illegal as pre-textual suppression of the first amendment, but not because it discriminates.

@godzilla101188 in my opinion, it is not that it is a protected class, but that the sign inherently is not discriminating against anybody but only showing displeasure and disdain for a certain class. Disdain being a feeling, not exactly a concrete action or blanket prohibition of singling them out. So, on that basis, it may not be a discriminatory sign or prohibition. However, if they, by written directives and/or actions, prohibit the entry of that class or remove them outright blanketed just for being a member of that class, then that might be an undue discrimination, and has a lot of grey areas.

It is reasonable to provide an employee (public servants are also employees with all of the rights that other employees get) with a quiet place to work for both productivity and the confidentiality of others materials, if not their own.

As a public servant who is supposed to serve the public, you can't discriminate against a group of people. Imagine if the sign said everyone welcome except Democrats, everyone welcome except the elderly, everyone welcome except Hispanic people. You can't discriminate against members of the public because of there affiliations. He is an embarrassment and he should NOT be working for the public!
He is using his "authority" to attempt to violate the 1st Amendment, which is a federal felony. He needs to be jailed and charged with the felony he is committing.

If you make this about discrimination on the basis of being an auditor, you will lose every legal argument. It might not be legal, but not on that basis. Look up protected classes in the federal and state legislation.

Pick your flavor of authoritarian oppression - if they prohibit First Amendment this week, do they prohibit MAGA hats next week, or Blacks the following week? This town administrators are clearly not a fan of our Bill of Rights, but are supportive of belligerent signs promoting divisiveness and prejudice. Cortland county civil servants appear to have a authoritarian political ideology, characterized by a centralized autocracy, and forcible suppression of Constitutional protections.

Unfortunately, there are many who are trying to pick fights instead of being polite like LIA is.
It's a strange phenomenon. Sometimes 'the algorithm' points you in the direction of content with certain biases that in no way represent the general consensus but we often start believing that it represents reality. You may have had personal experiences IRL though and it's difficult to discount that.
It's always the bad apples that make people dislike a whole group. It's as disgraceful to call first amendment auditors "undesired people" as doing a blanket statement like ACAB.

It keeps happening because WE the taxpayers end up footing the bill to defend their actions in court. If auditors did like Sean & used some of the settlement funds to educate the tax base, that might get enough people mad & making changes.

As a government employee, he is still beholden to the US Constitution, and blatant discrimination is a violation of the law.
It is most definitely a violation of Federal Law, and likely State Law, and possibly County Ordinance.
Then he has to petition to the federal representative to have him take the sign down. Take it like this.
A bunch of Texas citizens call a California public office and tell them to change their abortion policy.
Or a bunch of California citizens call a Texas public office and tell them to change their abortion policy.

If he really wants change he has to have people from that county calling in. Because even 10 phone calls from actual county residents might be enough pressure to get that sign down. Just going door to door and getting 10 people to call the county legislator.
But 100 or 1000 calls from people who DID NOT elect the county legislator won't do jack because of just that. In the USA you can be the most hated person in the country, but as long as you break no laws and 51% of your voterbase love you. You can stay in office. 300 million people could think you are absolute scum of the Earth, but as long as 100k people in your voting district love you, you are good to go for as long as your career or term limit lasts for.
@LeeeroyJenkins you are ignoring the fact that he DID violate US Law (18 USC 242) and if anyone else was in on it, then there is another violation of the law (18 USC 241). You do not have to petition anyone, you just have to show HOW they are violating the law, after that, if they choose to keep violating it then the lawsuits are on them...
@@mr.funkalicioussplendiferous Well again if it is nothing illegal that is breaking criminal law there is nothing they can do. They can sue all they want but that takes time and even if they win he will just make a modified sign that means the same message in different words. BUT in order for those previous 2 sentences to happen it will mean the residents of the county AGREE with the sign.
An example of this is Citizens of California voting for and even endorsing law makers that are being sued by gun manufacturers for the gun laws they currently have.
And vice versa Citizens of Texas voting for and even endorsing law makers that are being sued by abortion advocates for the abortion laws they currently have.
Both cases have precedent for lawsuits and both cases the voterbase is fine paying for the constant lawsuits if it means they have the legislation they want.
However if the RESIDENTS of the county disagree or don't care about the sign then knocking on their door and asking them to make a quick phone call will probably cause them to remove the sign. Also if the RESIDENTS of the county are informed about a settlement or are informed about lengthy litigations costs (if the county loses) over a small sign then they may start making the phone calls and complaining about the waste of taxpayer funds.
Either way, the elected officials only care about their voterbase. So until their voterbase complains. Whether its tomorrow after 2 hours of door knocking ; 6 months from now if someone sues them and the county settles over the sign ; or two years from now if the county doesn't settle the litigation and loses. It will come down to the voterbase complaining.
That's what I thought.
The segregational mindset and the fact that the Administrator couldn't see how wrong that sign was is shocking. It seems like common sense to know it isn't quite right BEFORE posting that sign, but surely any capable person would realize it after listening to Sean's well-spoken critique, yet this barney didn't even blink. I emailed all.
The signage is directly discriminatory and disgraceful with violation to the 1st amendment and it also dishonors all other elected Administrators doing honest work for the public. What a bad example! Imagine what he disseminates in that position? Can't believe I've only seen this. Revisit alert? If anyone thinks this is bullying, wrong answer.
In London, 60/70/80 years ago ,the signs read, 'NO IRISH, NO BLACKS, NO DOGS'(in that order of hatred.)

Clearly, this guy is being tolerant and accepting, so it's clear the intent of the sign is not meant ot be enforced. it'son a side message board where people in offices routinely stick comical displays. if it was intended to be a real ban on entrance, it would be at the entrance on the door. it's clearly meant to be a joke, thus he is exercising his own first amendment. nothing in the law says you lose your rights when you take public office, especially his right to express himself through jokes. Nope, gov employees are RESTRICTED in their speech and actions. They're required to NOT infringe on Rights...like put up signs that we can't doe protected things. See Prior Restraint a Rights Violation

That's ridiculous - all a sign like that does is create division and anger. Excellent job on calling him out on his ignorance. Imagine if the side said that others weren't welcome like blacks, Muslims, lesbians, etc. Sure, all of those are protected classes of people under civil rights acts, but I'd argue that someone exercising their civil rights automatically shares the same protections, if not more.

I visited the county legislatures Facebook page and asked who was the county administrator going to segregate next "Blacks"? "Jews" ? "Catholics"? I also asked how many other Constitutional Rights is he violating
He saw a couple of videos online of public employees freaking out over 1st amendment auditors filming in public, a constitutionally protected activity and correlates that to THE AUDITOR disrupting business.
