This reaction is from a full Elton John album reaction voted by members on Patreon: www.patreon.com/salvog This will be the last song I share on UA-cam featuring this album. THIS version of this song moved me way more than the live version. Cannot explain why, pure bliss.
Great Reaction, Bro SalvoG! I was about 15 when this album was released, I'm now 62, and this is perhaps the best of all his tunes. He was ON FIRE at this time. If you haven't heard, " Grey Seal" from this album, give it an ear. It's of the same great brilliance! Salute!!
There are so many great tracks. Grey Seal, Saturday Night alright for Fighting, Candle in the Wind, Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and I love The Song has No Title. Just wonderful tracks off one double album, and none to be missed! ❤️
The same with the band Heart. Heart became the Wilson sisters. The Robin Trower band doesn’t get enough credit either. James Dewar (R I P) comes to mind also. He was the singer for Robin Trower. Trower is an amazing guitarist but his music wouldn’t have been the same without James’ singing. After being a Robin Trower fan for over 50 years, I still can’t tell you the drummer’s name.
My older brother used to play this album so much back in the 70s, that he knew the words to every song. I agree that every song on this album is great and it is definitely one of the best " double albums" of all-time!
I cut my young musical teeth on this album. My Aunt had it and I visited her one summer probably 1975 and stayed in the spare room where this album (and other very good ones were) and a record player were. The best musical summer of my life listening to those albums. This was my favorite. Many other great ones for sure in that orange crate of albums ahhhhh the memories!
After all these years I still believe that this was the finest piece of music that Elton has ever produced. I remember when Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road was released, a brilliant album but this imo was the pinacle. Amazing that this album is 50 years old in October this year !!
The first 1min 40 was played purely on an ARP 2500, an analog monophonic synthesizer which was overdubbed many times by the engineer David Hentschel and it wasn't until many years later that this could be recreated on polyphonic synths live rather than a backing track. A very good example is Live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 1995 where the synths are played by Guy Babylon ua-cam.com/video/Xodt5hF57Vg/v-deo.html Sadly Guy passed suddenly in 2009.
I agree but Better off Dead on the Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy album is a close second for me for Elton/Bernie songs that don't get enough credit.
There is something so special for me to watch young people like you experience all of this awesome music for the first time. Yes, it is VERY EMOTIONAL, and I appreciate watching your ability to feel it. Well done Sir.
Imagine how excited people would be back in the 70,s buying this double lp and putting on for the first time . What a classic opener and the whole album absolutely faultless .. A timeless album ….❤️❤️❤️❤️
If I could only listen to one song for the rest of my life hands down this is the one. I can't put into words how much I have loved this song from the very first time I heard it back in 1973 when I was 17 and was obsessed with Elton John and ran out to buy the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album as soon as it came out. An absolute masterpiece!!
Some years back I had to have a kitten put down due to pain he was having. On the way to the vet I called the radio station to request a song for him. As soon as I said Funeral for a Friend I burst into tears. The DJ talked to me the whole time I was driving to make sure I was ok. I don't know if he played the song but I remember his kindness.
Sorry for your loss! You reminded me, shortly after the dog I grew up with died, I was driving and realized I was humming Elton's "Gulliver" -- completely unconsciously until that moment.
I was 13 (50 years ago) when this album came out and I still love it. Bernie Taupin is the best lyricist ever. The Elton John Band will always have a special place in my heart.
You can always tell when a piece of music is the result of the artists being inspired, or not. Elton & company were truly inspired when they created this work of art!
I think this is Eltons and Bernie Taupins finest work and Eltons band was fantastic as always. I find it hard to believe I first listened to this 50 years ago and it still sounds amazing
I feel so grateful to have grown up in the BEST ERA for music ever - I don't think it'll ever be topped. The bands were so deep - experimental and committed to the music.
Sure is one of my fav. Elton John masterpiece ever since it came out ! Very emotional for me, it reminds me of the loss of one of my younger brothers ! Stephane 🙏
In my opinion, his greatest song on his greatest album. Props to Davey Johnstone's phenomenal guitar work. How about those castanets? I've seen them do this live and it's equally great.
You did it again, Salvo...you made my evening! This is a masterpiece by Elton and Bernie - total genius, total magic - and that band...consummate musicians...just fantastic! It deserves every accolade your commenters are giving it. I must have played this vinyl about a thousand times. So pleased you are enjoying every minute of what all of us of a certain age have enjoyed for 50+ years.
This album just grabs you by the throat & doesn’t let go! A double-album of non-stop killer tracks. I used to listen to this album a lot. You can just get lost in it. I totally can relate to getting emotional, this song is overwhelming at times. Great reaction! Keep going on this album, you will not be disappointed.
*FINALLY!!!!!* I've been on you and a few other reactioners to do this song every time they do a Elton tune!!!!! LOL I fully consider this to be Elton and Bernie's masterpiece. There's nothing in his repertoire that even comes close altho Elton has many many damn good songs that's just a statement and testament of how good this song is. Elton's band at this time it among if not the premiere musicians in the rock business and it clear shines in the remarkable song. Between Bernie's captivating lyrics and Elton's band's beautiful soaring musical performance. From it's eerie opening to it's hard driving main body with it's flawless transitions and musicianship that's above and beyond reproach it is a perfect song start to finish. I defy anyone to point out a weak spot or to suggest what could make it better. Ty for this one Elton and TY Salvo for finally getting to it. I so glad you liked it and got the same emotional effect that I got when I first heard it and still get whenever I hear it. ✌Peace✌
I was 11 when my 4-1/2-year-older-than-me sister got this album. It was my introduction to Elton John and got me absolutely hooked. Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding has remained my favorite Elton John ever since! Just an amazing, amazing piece of work (as is the entire album).
Grey Seal and All The Young Girls Love Alice are my two favorites from this album. Got to see him do the entire album, start to finish, two weeks before it was released. Started his tour in Dallas that year. Amazing.
Saw Elton Live 3x....once in the 1970's, 1x in the 1980's, and last year in his farewell tour. I have to say his most recent show was the best of the three. I also understand that Elton wrote most of the music on this album over the course of a single weekend...talk about "channeling."
7 of us went to see him in concert at Earls Court in London in 1976. We were 15 year old school kids at the time, 2 girls, 5 boys, it was the first concert I ever went to. He opened with this…it was truly amazing and will never forget it. 62 years old now but still get that buzz when I hear this.
to quote the Breakup Song by the Greg Kihn band, "they don't write 'em like that anymore". Brings back memories of when I was a little kid listening to this album with my older sisters, mind blowing stuff.
If I am correct, this is the first album I ever bought of Elton John, and it changed my life. Just from this first cut, I was like "What the....?!" This album is a masterpiece!
Heres the answer...good music, as an art form is supposed to evoke an emotion of some sort. Thats usually why we like some songs over others. For me, Gary Moore's Still Got The Blues For You is so hauntingly beautiful that i tear up.
One of the greatest albums ever made! A bona fide masterpiece! :) Then again, Elton John in the 70s was pretty much unstoppable. Virtually every album went to number 1 in the UK ,the US and all over the World. I think he had 7 or 8 number 1 albums in a row in the 70s. I think he remains the most successful Billboard artist of all-time! What an opener though! :)
The most impressive thing about this album is that it was written, composed and recorded fully within about a month's time. Arguably the best double album ever (Steve Wonder's SINKOL is in the discussion as well) and it was all done in a month's time. Today they can't even do all that with a regular album and it won't even come remotely close to this album. They put out albums today in 1 or 2 years that can't even come close to this one.
All due respect, there are a lot of double albums that would make the list. GYBR is certainly on the short list but I would put The Beatles (White Album), Who Quadrophenia, Layla & Other Love Stories on that list. My sleeper double album is Todd Rundgren Something/Anything…Todd is truly a genius
Fantastic song!!! A masterpiece!!! One of my favorite Elton John songs! I was in high school when this song came out. I remember being BLOWN AWAY and making everyone I knew listen to it! Just OUTSTANDING!!!
I was doing lights and sound for a bar cover band back in the 70s and this song was their opening song for their 2nd set. They did I’d so well and it always blew the crowd away . So fun to do the lights to.
I went to final tour concert last year. The man was such a stage presence and proformer. One of the best concerts up there with a Phil Collin's concert
In my opinion Goodbye Yellowbrick Road was Elton John at his peak. Every song is great from beginning to end. Not a filler on this double album. And it starts out great with this song.
@SalvoG I love watching where music takes you! EJ is a musician I've followed since the release of "Yellow Brick Road". His catalogue (with Bernie Taupin) is another rabbit-hole you'll be fascinated with. Now in 2023, Elton is not only performing, but also is very involved in many aspects of the music universe and supports/mentors up and coming artists. Thank you so much for your reaction to a song that has mesmerized me since I was 13 y/o!!!
@SalvoG The last featuring this album? :-) I must have missed something! Please point me in the right direction to any of your other EJ 'Yellow Brick Road Reactions', please?
I would go to the local record store(Tower Records) and buy everything Elton did. New or old he was so much a part of my life from 10 til now and I'm 60. He is an epic musician. ✌️🎼🎶🎸
I remember staring at the opened album cover , memorizing every printed song lyric on the double album set. I still remember all of the words, 40 years later 😁💖
I saw Elton live twice: the first time in 1975 at Dodger stadium. He opened with Your Song and 16 year old me cried, lol. We were on the field (crazy first come first serve, running onto the baseball field), it was phenomenal. I still remember his sequined Dodger outfit! The second time I saw him was in 2000 for his solo piano tour in a much smaller setting. He is an absolutely amazing artist and his blues playing is off the chain. You absolutely need to do a reaction to his song Wasteland, the live version in Tokyo. A fantastic blues song that doesn’t get enough credit.
I played this cut over and over again when I got the album as a teen. That wail toward the end, I was entranced. Elton John was one of the few musicians I loved during that time that I never saw live, though, because I was buying my own tickets from my babysitting money, and his concerts were sooo pricey.
So many great songs in that album. All the young girls love Alice, Your sister can twist but she can Rock and Roll, Saturdays all right for fighting, and so many more.
This is one of my favorite songs by Elton John, you should check out the live performance of this in Central Park. I've seen him 3 times and he puts on an awesome concert!

@@martinmorris5997 Long distance High 5 for your comment! Absolutely correct!!
@@markconnolly312Grey Seal is a good song. I really like the song Harmony too.
One of the perfect examples of brilliant music and sound engineering fom the 70's. So much of this music is BEST listened to with headphones.
Elton's band NEVER got enough credit. Fantastic musicians each.
That band was so tight; absolute killers.
The same with the band Heart. Heart became the Wilson sisters. The Robin Trower band doesn’t get enough credit either. James Dewar (R I P) comes to mind also. He was the singer for Robin Trower. Yes, I couldn't agree more and all of the members of Elton's band should be in the Hall of Fame along with Elton and Bernie, they were that good!
Saw Elton in concert with his original band at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in the early 2000’s. They were FANTASTIC!
Nigel and Dee will always be an example of musical excellence
The rest of the album is just as good as this song. Seriously, one of the best double albums ever. All killer, no filler.
Preach. You ain't wrong.
Agree 100%
My older brother used to play this album so much back in the 70s, that he knew the words to every song. I agree that every song on this album is great and it is definitely one of the best " double albums" of all-time!

This and Harmony and me are my favorite Elton songs.
Elton had such a great band. Nigel, Dee and Davey were excellent musicians and their backround vocals filled in Elton's songs perfectly.
Thanks, my thoughts exactly.
Davey is well-respected in the industry
The entire album is legendary....
On my desert island list.
All killer, no filler.
I was blown away when this first came out when I was in high school. It is on my top ten all-time song list.
It's amazing to watch your face express. You're kind of like an open book, easy to read, your happy reactions are contagious. Keep it up! !!!
I was going to say the same thing. Love your expressions. Keep it up. You're a joy to watch 😊
What a way to kick off an album! Sir Elton is a genius.
So is his lyricist Bernie Taupin.
The genius of Elton, Bernie, and the band
There is something so special for me to watch young people like you experience all of this awesome music for the first time. Yes, it is VERY EMOTIONAL, and I appreciate watching your ability to feel it. Well done Sir.
Elton John's band can definitely jam!
Thx for doing this. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album NEVER gets old. Classic.
Imagine how excited people would be back in the 70,s buying this double lp and putting on for the first time . What a classic opener and the whole album absolutely faultless .. A timeless album ….❤️❤️❤️❤️

Elton is just Gold.
I was 13 (50 years ago) when this album came out and I still love it. Bernie Taupin is the best lyricist ever. The Elton John Band will always have a special place in my heart.
Same!!
And yet, Bernie co-wrote “We Built This City” by Starship…
You can always tell when a piece of music is the result of the artists being inspired, or not. Elton & company were truly inspired when they created this work of art!
I think this is Eltons and Bernie Taupins finest work and Eltons band was fantastic as always. I find it hard to believe I first listened to this 50 years ago and it still sounds amazing
I loved this when it came out. It was so different. The bass in "Love Lies Bleeding" is off the charts good. Just loved Elton John.
I feel so grateful to have grown up in the BEST ERA for music ever - I don't think it'll ever be topped. The bands were so deep - experimental and committed to the music.
Early Elton is Classic
I love this album I bought it as soon as it came out, brilliant, the band are brilliant, 50 years old
Stunning album when it came out for all us oldies...
Sure is one of my fav. Elton John masterpiece ever since it came out ! Very emotional for me, it reminds me of the loss of one of my younger brothers ! Stephane 🙏
Loved Yellow Brick Road Dbl Album!! This song and Candle in the Wind were iconic!! This song was what Elton John envisioned for his own funeral. ❤
In my opinion, his greatest song on his greatest album. Props to Davey Johnstone's phenomenal guitar work. How about those castanets?
I've seen them do this live and it's equally great.
Saw a sickening number of classic bands, and these guys were the best. Nigel's drums and Davey's guitar .. unbelievable.

You don't have to explain. It's just that good.
Elton John is yet another legend 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
His magnum opus.
Davey Johnstone on guitar was seriously underrated
This is a top ten all time epic prog Rock song. Elton could do it all.
I’ve been a fan of Sir Elton from the beginning, this album is a masterpiece and I’m so glad I was able to see him in concert
Elton & his band at the top of their game.

So many songs from this era are pure masterpieces. Great reaction!
“Love Lies Bleeding” is also a type of flower, so read into that what you will.
Great reaction! 👏
Dee Murray’s bass is thundering on this!
I love how you feel music and totally understand what you mean.
He has some Hella good music.Deep dives with Elton,go on and on. I love all the early years best. I am 50 years into these jams now.
Masterpiece studio version love it love you
Grey Seal and All The Young Girls Love Alice are my two favorites from this album. Got to see him do the entire album, start to finish, two weeks before it was released. Started his tour in Dallas that year. Amazing.
Goosebumps right
Probably the best opening to any album ever.
Goodbye yellow brick Road and captain fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy are my 2 favourite albums from Elton John
Saw Elton Live 3x....once in the 1970's, 1x in the 1980's, and last year in his farewell tour. I have to say his most recent show was the best of the three. I also understand that Elton wrote most of the music on this album over the course of a single weekend...talk about "channeling."

GYBR was my 1st LP. A classic among classics! ✌

The music frequencies of this song connected to you. When I heard it in 1973, I felt the same way. Cheers great reaction.
Once upon a time…this is what he opened his shows with
to quote the Breakup Song by the Greg Kihn band, "they don't write 'em like that anymore". Brings back memories of when I was a little kid listening to this album with my older sisters, mind blowing stuff.
One of my favorite albums!!
I wore this song out when I bought this album back when it first came out!!! SO FREAKING AWESOME - THE WHOLE ALBUM!!!
The album grabs you by the throat with this first track and doesn't let go until the end.
If I am correct, this is the first album I ever bought of Elton John, and it changed my life. Just from this first cut, I was like "What the....?!" This album is a masterpiece!
I already saw this on your Patreon but had to watch it again on here. It's definitely one of my favorite Elton songs.
Masterpiece!!! So epic
This is what pure genius sounds like - songwriter, composer, musicians and production.
A masterpiece, so your reaction is understandable.
There are videos of him and ray cooper (percussionist) in Russia. All of those videos are great. Just the two of them. Elton's voice and the songs
Dee Murray did an excellent job on this album. I was in the 6th grade. Played the grooves off of this one. Well, all of his early albums.
My favorite piece of music by Elton John by far,
Heres the answer...good music, as an art form is supposed to evoke an emotion of some sort. Thats usually why we like some songs over others. For me, Gary Moore's Still Got The Blues For You is so hauntingly beautiful that i tear up.
Have a moment. We're all friends here.
Todd is amazing on that one. All Things Must Pass and Out of the Blue are some other amazing double albums.
My all time favorite song
Truly Elton's masterpiece. Every time I hear this I'm blown away.
Would you mind checking out a video I did for this song?
Me too, so I made this video. I hope you like it!
My all time favorite Elton John Song . Party On
Fantastic song!!! A masterpiece!!! One of my favorite Elton John songs! I was in high school when this song came out. I remember being BLOWN AWAY and making everyone I knew listen to it! Just OUTSTANDING!!!
When this album came out this was the song that go the most calls from my parents to turn that down. Genius album
I was doing lights and sound for a bar cover band back in the 70s and this song was their opening song for their 2nd set. They did I’d so well and it always blew the crowd away . So fun to do the lights to.
This was the First Elton John song I ever heard, on a Sony cassette deck in 1974
I went to final tour concert last year. The man was such a stage presence and proformer. One of the best concerts up there with a Phil Collin's concert
In my opinion Goodbye Yellowbrick Road was Elton John at his peak. Every song is great from beginning to end. Not a filler on this double album. And it starts out great with this song.
The early albums like Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water, Honky Chateau and Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy are where to start.
@SalvoG I love watching where music takes you! EJ is a musician I've followed since the release of "Yellow Brick Road". " Your Sister Can't Dance, Saturday Night's Alright, Socal Disease and don't forget Jamaica J/O." But every song is worth a listen.
This was when synthesizers were coming into vogue in mainstream rock music, and I loved them, this being one of my favorites.
I remember staring at the opened album cover , memorizing every printed song lyric on the double album set. I still remember all of the words, 40 years later 😁💖
I saw him in concert and he opened with this. It was incredible.
Elton's Magnum opus and opening track from 1973's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (an FM radio favorite back in the day). :)
I saw Elton live twice: the first time in 1975 at Dodger stadium. He opened with Your Song and 16 year old me cried, lol. EVERY DAY ALL DAY THIS ALBUM WAS PLAYED...LOVED IT...ALL OF IT.
I played this cut over and over again when I got the album as a teen. That wail toward the end, I was entranced. Elton John was one of the few musicians I loved during that time that I never saw live, though, because I was buying my own tickets from my babysitting money, and his concerts were sooo pricey.
My favorite Elton John!
Billy Joel and Elton John used to do tours together. They did them "In the round" with pianos facing one another.
Bought this double Album in Petty Coat Lane, London in 1973 - still own this vinyl Masterpiece.
This was the very first Album I bought when I was 16 years old. Made a huge impression on me and from then on I was a fan.
Got this album for my 12th birthday when it was released . I was ahead of my time. Know every word every chord on this album.
So many great songs in that album. All the young girls love Alice, Your sister can twist but she can Rock and Roll, Saturdays all right for fighting, and so many more.
This was the first album I ever purchased, and still all these years later it's one of my favorites!
Would you mind checking out a video I did for this song?
This is one of my favorite songs by Elton John, you should check out the live performance of this in Central Park. I've seen him 3 times and he puts on an awesome concert!
