@@VastDivide Even though we are used to seeing the pretty boy Chris Hemsworth as the Thor in Marvel movies, but in Norse mythology, Thor is described as a barrel-chested ugly man. So, the God of War: Ragnarok version of Thor is actually a more accurate depiction of what he looked like in Norse mythology to tell u the truth bro lol😂just saying🤷♂️
About casting him as a villain: God of War has always been about switching perspectives on Mythology, the entire Greek pantheon is portrayed as devious and manipulative. We are always shown the worst of the gods and Thor won’t be any different
@@MadeUpNoun not really, only Zeus is ever really devious, just as the human characters in most stories. Gods are flawed but Zeus is just a big ol’ bastard. Plus, in the new God of War, the only God who isn’t devious is Loki, see what they did there?
@@metoo3342 Yea but he obviously wasn’t himself when that happened. When they see the scene again in Hel, Atreus himself can’t believe what he’s seeing
Since Kratos killed his sons, traveled to hell and back, and killed baldur, it is safe to say that kratos is a threat to Midgard and Asgard in Thor’s eyes.
And the fact that Atreus is half Jötunn and one of the few Jötunn's left could be a threat to Asgard as they were seen as a threat worth eradicating at the end of GOW 2018.
Then Thor tries to fight Kratos, but he is too lazy, fat and drunk so Kratos kills Thor as a tutorial boss In upcoming God of War game. 😂 Edit: Make it happen and I buy Playstation just for that.
@@OnlineWithMikko if you think that about his body type, I suggest you get into a fist fight with any power lifter in your city. i would love to see you getting smacked
Also if you’re very muscly it will give you a lot of energy, but if you’re a god you’ll never tire in that regard. So just having pure mass for power is acc pretty sick idea
Gods IRL actually. They exist as beings of power, not humans with power. People confuse what GOW is about, what the main character was and is about. Most have not a clue.
@@aserta The actual meaning or your opinion. In God of War all the gods are very human in their motivations. Kratos is driven by rage and despair in most of the games, and betrayed when he is tricked to slaughter his family. But when he's put in a position of authority like a general of Sparta or the new God of War, he becomes drunk with power. He is lustful, temperamental, prideful and only has a mild soft spot for children that remind him of his first daughter. Regardless of all of that, he won't hesitate to destroy a city or and all of humanity to pursue his own goals. Once he leaves the world of the Greek pantheon in ruins, he hates all the gods including himself. When he moves to the world of the Norse mythology he wants to live the simple life of a human putting his past behind him including his power. It's a struggle of what it means to be a man, a father and a force of chaos.
As a Norwegian, this is the image of Thor I grew up with. Red head and a huge belly. Whoever claims this is disrespectful towards culture and stuff needs to check their sources. Marvel on the other hand is way different from the “cultural” image of Thor. 😅🤣 loves both versions, but Marvel is very different from the original tales and image of the Norse characters, Marvel Thor is American, that’s also why he is pictured differently than Thor in Scandinavian comics. It’s a different purpose and sales point.
He was never accurately depicted as fat from what historians say, only that he had a huge appetite.. the game is going for him letting himself go after all those years of killing
I think the belly should have been a bit more of a square to fit the way I picture Thor, but I do agree that he has always been a big boy. Marvel's Thor is a Calvin Klein model, not a thunder God, lol. Thor is the rough kind of handsome and that includes some fat on top of those big muscles. I still think Peter Madsens Valhalla is close to the perfect depiction of how I see Thor, even if the style is a little cute. That body type is how I see Thor.
From dialogue from Mimir about him being a “Fat gobber” to his overeating as well as drinking that is referenced throughout the game, and given what you said. I think this is as good an actual adaptation can be.
it's also very funny because we see Thor in the secret ending of the 2018 game, and he's not exactly a small guy in that cutscene, and theres screenshots of where people brightened up the scene and he's a big guy, the only real change from 2018 to now is he doesn't have armor on his chest anymore
@@maaax5092 I mean yeah the fact that it's unarmored does draw attention to it because his skin being lighter than his armor provides a lot of contrast, but I feel like that's probably going to be more a product of his character than to draw attention to his weight
To me, this depiction of Thor feels extremely accurate and realistic. He's got that 'Eddie Hall-ish' extreme strongman build, and seems like the kind of guy who could pick someone clean off the floor with one hand. Armor wise, although the armor isn't extremely practical, I feel like that is also extremely thematic. Thor has always been portrayed as foolhardy and bullheaded, so the wide open area in the chest could be a 'I gave you this much vulnerable area yet you can't kill me' kind of thing. He also shouldn't be built like Kratos, as the Norse ideal body is different from the Greek. Greek was all about form, while Norse was all about sheer strength. Just feels like it hit all the points for me
While I agree with you, I wouldn't mind him having more "God-like" physical features, something that just makes him something more than a human with a strongman build. I don't know about what his height will be; if he were to be taller than Kratos with this build, I would gladly accept it.
@The Walsh No joke, I can't stand super hero movies anyway though as they almost always follow the same tired, old formula. I remember watching the Spider Man movie with Toby Mcguire a long time ago after seeing around 4-5 other shitty movies in the same vein and had to literally walk out of the theater by the time it was 2/3rds over.
His appearance makes perfect sense within the context of the game, too. He's framed as a psychopathic, petulant brute that's carved a path of destruction and pain across many of the different realms. You even get to see some of his poor victims, like Thamur. So a guy capable of so many fucked up feats of strength *has* to look that big and imposing. He just needs better-looking armor, like what he showed up in at the end of GOW4.
In Norse Mythology, there are depictions of Thor being rather large. I think his depiction in the Marvel universe has altered people's view on the character. While it's a good performance, it's an inaccurate depiction of Norse Mythology. This one is truer to the source material.
While I have no problem with this depiction of Thor and find it quite refreshing-to say it's truer to Norse mythology because he is large is false in accordance to this channel's words as well as other Norse Mythology historians. The only actual detail they give him in the texts are that his hair and beard are red. This means that GoW's version is definitely more accurate as he has red hair, but that's it; it's nothing about size.
@@navigatingel6104 Well, I can't give you a direct source to the entirety of all Norse Mythology, but there are videos you can search about Thor in NM that depict him in a similar light to how they are depicting him in GOW: Ragnarok.
Just so you know, Thor is portrayed as a serial killer in God of War based on Mimir's stories. He mostly kills giants, and he enjoys it. Giants are portrayed as the "good guys." However, we know this from the giants' perspective. We may see it from the gods' perspective in this sequel.
@@blackbloom8552 I feel that is what makes this series, at least the reboot distinctly interesting. At a time where we like to escape into power fantasies, where we make gods mortal by calling them superheroes, this is a nice antithesis to remind us that idealisation becomes corrupted really fast. It's one thing to dream of having super powers and be the good guy. It's another to face one's own reality and accept that one wouldn't be the good guy when one gets these superpowers because of you aren't the pinnacle of morality in ordinary life, why would you be with superpowers? All that would do is to amplify your best but also your worst behaviour and make it much more extreme. God of war is a good reminder of that and I believe that people don't like that. They want escapism, not facing reality in their fantasies.
Except he doesn't have the chest muscles strongmen have. It was jarring to see this at first imo but I've grown to kinda like it but strongman, while close, is not it.
Anything can work, you could depict him like a grandma and still work. Wasn't Baldur skinny as fuck and still on par with Kratos's strength? I guess people are attempting to use logic in the physique and strength when none got physiques that match. Kratos beaten people way bigger than him before, Hercules was twice his size and to the Titans he was an ant.
@@MrSandman610 did you forget how they both pushed part of a mountain together? He definitely was smacking Kratos around at first and he still has super strength
Regarding the lack of gut armor, my take is that this version of Thor seems to be extremely cocky: so much so that he doesn't protect his gut simply because he doesn't think anyone is strong enough to hurt him.
It’s the same reason as to why kratos doesn’t protect his vitals, probably has healing abilities of the same kind and they’re both cocky because of that. Kratos has wiped out a whole a pantheon so he’s right to be cocky but Thor is just arrogant
@@jcshark7023 I'm willing to bet Kratos will expose his gut as his weakness in their first fight, and then Thor will get away somehow and be embarrassed, then come back later on with actual armor Okay after watching a lot of gow theory videos I'm pretty sure Thor's gonna whoop Kratos' ass in their first fight

His model in the cutscene is fully covered. I dont think this is his usual fighting setup, i imagine we'll encounter him more than once in the game and the image shown here could be of him off his guard and not ready to battle, or he got really drunk and came down to woop kratos ass without thinking to put some armor on first
My initial reaction was: "Oh yeah, the ase are known for drinking and eating a lot, but also, a strongman body isn't all tight protruding muscle." This Thor looks like Eddie Hall. He looks like an actual heavy weight lifter. Also, keep in mind that he's in relaxed stance, not tightening his muscles.
Except Eddie Hall actually has obviously visible muscle and overbearing strength. This Thor literally looks a fat guy who has only lifted potato chips and beer into his mouth his entire life instead of any form of weight. You cannot look at a picture of Eddie Hall and tell me there are any similarities in physique outside of the fact that Eddie has a wide gut. Eddie's pecs are massive, his biceps are defined and peaked, he has rounded shoulders, and you can see his abs on his large core. This Thor has zero pecs, and absolutely zero muscular definition or sign of muscle. People keep comparing him to a power lifter in physique which is entirely false as most power lifters are relatively balanced, but also higher weight power lifters LOOK strong. This Thor just looks like a 'God' of eating competitions. Which is fine. He doesn't have to be jacked to the teeth, but for the love of god stop saying he looks 'strong' like this. It's embarrassingly inaccurate and makes it very obvious you have zero knowledge about human anatomy or any form of competition physique for any kind of weight lifting.
@@Eirud Pretty much my take. I'm fine with this design, he definitely looks menacing, but people need to stop saying he has a strongman look, it's not even close. I'd like him to keep the gut but have his chest and arms pop out more. He doesn't look like Eddie Hall at all as he is.

You are talking about current Eddie hall. The Eddie hall that competed in the strongman looked fat with next to no definition. His stomach was bulging and his arms were puffy. Eddie hall now has more definition but he's also 40 plus pounds lighter than he previously was.
With the amount of mead and ale he drinks,it would be surprising if he was as fit as Hemsworth. I drink a few beers a day and I have a similar belly,so I think it's a pretty accurate representation just based off on a logical perspective.

Thor being an antagonist and a defender of humanity would be in line with his character, as Kratos and boy did start the beginning of Ragnarok. Mimir in the game talks about Kratos being in the norse mythology is a major issue, even though Kratos doesn't particularly want to be involved.

@Butt Whole He got there by boat. In GOW 3 Kratos kills all of the Greek pantheon, and therefore destroys "the world". Its not wether or not Thor looks like “real life Thor”, he’s a god of myth, he’s got no real face or features apart from those mentioned in passing, GOW Thor is what he was described (mostly by Mimir) to be in the previous game, gigantic, brutish, full of anger and wrath (he practically killed Modi, his surviving son and heir after Magni dies to Kratos), he’s in decadence and behaves erratically, his world is dying. People have a strong urge to be offended as often as possible. They are actively searching for ways to get offended because they think it’s their right.
@@TheAcidicMolotov I’m assuming what he meant about people being offended is that people are offended that this god who (probably) belongs to “there culture” is being portrayed as fat. As for the powerful thing the first god of war game in the Norse setting tells us how strong Thor is several time’s, and from what mimir say’s we can tell that he was like this already when doing said feat’s of strength, like killing all the giant’s. But putting aside all culture and lore we get from the game and real life we can guess that he’s strong simply from his build, the two main things that I see when I look at it are someone who has a lot of weight behind every punch (Even more so if he’s using his hammer) and that his build is very similar to strong men (The competitive strong men) the only real difference between this and a strong man is the fact that this Thor has a larger gut, which is probably because he is a fat lazy drunk.
I feel like something overlooked in this is that in the God of War game, Thor's described as a drunkard and is shown to be abusive towards his kids. Kratos kill both Magni and Modi in GoW. You kill one (can't recall which one was first), the other runs to Thor, Thor beats the shit out of him and tells him to go kill Kratos or not bother coming back. Then you kill the second son. This Thor, by default wants Kratos dead, or got sent to fight him by Odin because Kratos is stirring things up WAY too much to be ignored. This isn't "I'm here to protect humanity" Thor, this is "You killed my sons and relatives, you bastard!" Thor, or "I got sent here to kill you, so die already." Thor. Either way, he's probably gonna treat Kratos more like the Jotuun after they swiped Mjolnir than anything else. This game also isn't too kind to the Norse gods. Mostly in the sense that they are portrayed more like the Greek gods. Vain, sadistic, narcissistic, cocky. While this is (probably) done so Kratos will look like a good guy in comparison (now that he's not a rage fueled monster with barely a concept of mercy or restraint). It shows that even if you wanted a "good" interpretation of the gods, you're not likely to find it here just due to their narrative roles. This took less effort to pull of with the greek gods because they're (in simplified terms) assholes with superpowers and egos to match. It's not like the greeks pretended that wasn't the case when they wrote about them.
which kinda sucks because the Norse patheon, for all their short comings were someone of the more greyer and respectable patheons, even if Odin was still a peace of shit, but hey he's no Zeus...
Yeah Also they Interpeted the Persian king as a fat shit I think what most ppl don't get is that this game is not here to represent beautiful heroic gods ...
Funnily enough, the Greek gods were normally quite benevolent. Most of their negative personality traits were exaggerated by later writers with good reasons to make the old gods look bad
With regards to Thor being an antagonist, that doesn't necessarily make him a villain. An antagonist is merely a foil for the protagonist, and God of Wars protagonist is Kratos. Kratos destroyed the world of Greek myth by slaying the gods, and in doing so unleashed chaos and destruction (for example, killing Poseidon caused the Earth's waters to rise and great storms to erupt unchecked). Thor could still fill his role as the protector of humanity and simply view Kratos as a threat.
@@kenetmendoza2157 there are some good guys in myth even though they barley exist, he was saying that thot could fill in the roll of protecter of humanity I was simply saying that that’s less likely to happen
I mean when you’re a guy who solely kills ppl for fun like the giants and he’s not a protector of humanity remember in the game he killed a guy and his wife or sum the ghost who wanted you to lay him to rest Thor is a villain
In Norse myths, Thor is often called Thor the Red because he's a redhead so they got that right. In the Scandinavian comics "Valhalla" Thor is depicted as a burly guy, so maybe some devs have taken inspiration from there.
I honestly really appreciate the unique design, he really strikes me as a blundering burley brute who loves to fight and indulge in feasts (in lore Thor was said to have drank the equivalent of a quarter of the worlds ocean in mead). Maybe that isn't what Thor was originally meant to represent, but this is Santa Monica's vision and their depictions of the Norse gods seem to be quite barbaric.
I agree with you. Thor in god of war is really unique and the only reason people mad about it is because he is not a blonde hair man and he is thick! He should be thick! He was the one who drank half of a sea

I would have liked them to make him both muscular and fat, if that makes any sense, kinda the way a lot of heavyweights tend to look, but yeah I like the idea that while he is this strong badass he kinda doesn’t give a shit about keeping his physique, as evidenced by his insane amounts of gluttony
It's just that we are soo used to see Chris Hemsworth, a six-packed dude with 1000 pounds of manly muscles, that many people can't take this character design from GOW 5
Personally, I can never correlate Chris Hemsworth's Thor build with the actual myths simply because the Marvel universe is obviously different, and mythologies and their Gods can be depicted much differently. I was still slightly disappointed, but it wasn't because I wasn't expecting a Chris Hemsworth build. I was expecting a design similar to this, but somewhat muscular. I think it's mainly the stomach that I thought could've been slightly toned down. But after some time, I started liking the design and I became more appreciative that they went with a bold choice for him.

Man, the internet is so thor over this photo. I think you brought up a lot that I hadn't even considered about Thor's appearance, including the Strongman comparison. Although I understand your wariness of how his character might be affected by the writing of GoW. Deities within that franchise tend to be painted as the villains of the story. Perhaps Thor's place within the narrative will be different, or he might be leading the charge against those he sees to be villains to Asgard? All I know is, I love his hammer and his beard. :D
Given that the franchise has already set up presenting the jotun as victims of genocide, given Thor’s role battling giants, I think it’s safe to assume he’s an antagonist
Well, Kratos (the player character) DID kill two of Thor's brothers in the previous game, I think that if he IS presented as an antagonist there will be a justified reason for his hostilities. Just my two cents, hope it helps!
This Thor looks like a dude that actually sat at the feasting tables of Valhalla in between great battles. Also, if you watch shows about the world's strongest men you'll notice that this Thor has a similar build to them. It's about strength, rather than appearances. Even if he was not misaligned in any way (which i do think he will be), in these games the gods themselves are inherently antagonistic because of their position. Kratos doesn't like the God's because of his own association with being one. Also kratos killed alot of Thor's family in the first game. His antagonism might come from being mad at that fact.

I feel like there’s no point to screaming and crying about this depiction of Thor if you aren’t willing to scream and cry over the fact that they made Baldur a scrawny crackhead rather than a gorgeous, kind hearted boy who nobody wanted to hurt
I didn't mind Baldur. Being the most attractive person in a small group isn't the same as being a supermodel. Everyone did love Baldur in the game, he was angry that he couldn't feel and wanted to die, so he chose the god of war to do it. Maybe he could have asked kindly to start with but eventually he would have had to be an ass, at least towards kratos.
Michael French well Baldur didn’t initially seek out kratos. He was seeking out the last known living giant who at that time would have been fey, but fey already died and baldur came across instead kratos so he assumed kratos was the last living jotunn. He was seeking out the jotnar because they are the general enemies of the gods and i guess he thought they would have had a way to kill him.

I feel what's actually important to this debate is "Does the design fit the portrayal the devs are trying to create?" and I'd argue it does. Marvel Thor does this too. Marvel Thor is supposed to be a shiny paragon hunk because he is supposed to be beautiful and admirable and mythically powerful. This isnt that Thor. GoW Thor is described as a brutal, angry, lout. As Mimir even says "A fat dobber." While I'm totally understanding of the strongman physique vs. hunk physique arguments I keep seeing surrounding this image, I think its beside the point. Even if you give up and say "Yeah, this Thor is just fat." I think it serves the purpose the devs are trying to achieve which is de-mystifying Thor as this hero god. GoW Thor is a fat, abusive, angry drunk. He's a genocidal maniac who given his worlds most powerful weapon used it to kill everyone he could get at and then put himself out of work. It wouldnt surprise me at all to find out that the reason Thor seems to be leaning more toward the obese in his concept art is that he sits on his ass drinking and eating in Asgard because he has nothing to do anymore. He killed everyone he was supposed to or allowed to and now Odin has had him in de facto retirement til Ragnarok.
@@alucardzutain6062 I think the OP is trying to say it rather depends on who you are trying to appeal, and if whether or not it fits the narrative or the over all story. The looks of Thor on marvel is very subjective, personally? Its fine. So as this. So in the end, it depends on who is making and creating the world for that story.
@@alucardzutain6062 I would not say it's a lie. As the video says, there is no written account of what he looks like other than references to his immense appetite. He's a God, so it is possible whatever he eats would not affect his physique. Because there is no reference to his physique, artists portray him as per the ideal male figure of that time. The ideal male figure of our time is the tall, lean six pack sporting one, hence Chris Thor. Also, this is what Thor looks like in Marvel, so deviating from their version would not sit well with the fans.
To be fair, you don’t really need chest armour when you’re too thicc for any blade to cut deep enough. Also regeneration helps too. Baldur, even when mortal, was a twig much weaker than Thor and it took SOOO much to take him down. Kratos too; gets stabbed through his torso and just keeps going. Gods are almost unstoppable.
The devs described their interpretations Thor as a hedonistic one which also fits with Thor in myth. I believe as a hedonistic individual would eat and drink tons. He would sit, laugh and have a rotten good time with people. This I think is one of the best interpretations of Thor not because of any historical significance (Although it helps) but because it’s something new, it’s something different and it will be fun to explore especially as an antagonistic character. Also I like that he’s one of the antagonists. Keep in mind this is a franchise who’s story subtext is that the gods weren’t really people worth worshiping. Just look at God of War I, II, III, and all the additional games. Most of the time the characters we would usually associate as the “Heros” such as Hercules, Theseus and so on were in line with the myths to a degree but twisted the story to frame them as being more toxic than heroic.
Ymir did paint thor in the way you described for sure. Especially the part where you mentioned drinking a lot. Just cause people see thor as a hero type in marvel doesnt meant that he was that way in the mythology. I think thats where people are having a problem with it. It's the ones that have for years seen him in marvel comics and that's skewed their view of him. Then again people see the Disney movie depictions of greek mythology and if you look at the actual mythology it's all kinds of fucked up and not the way its depicted in modern day media
It just make sense he looks like that. if people actually listened to the lore in GOW 2018 surrounding thor and Mimir's stories the way he looks makes total sense.
@@Yuri-dk6kd yes and that’s the point. Maybe I didn’t explain well. when I say “where Hercules is aligned with myth” I mean he did do all his labors that make him look like the hero, but we learn in the game that he’s actually very bitter and jealous of Kratos for becoming the god of war and he didn’t after all he did for the gods of Olympus.
Personally LOVE this depiction, finally a more realistic depiction of this Norse deity. I mean, if you read the sagas and stories and then look and Hemsworth in Marvel - that ain't the guy from the mythos, it's a Vogue/GQ version of it. This guy is supposed to be of nasty character, scruff, and HUGE, which he finally is in this game, and kudos to that!
"A more realistic depiction of this Norse deity!" The whole video telling us that there's really not much depiction on how thor should look like: "Am I a joke to you?"
Why the fuck is anyone even looking to Marvel in the first place? They aren't the standard when it comes to norse mythology just because they joinked a few characters.
actually, in the scene at the end of GoW where they show Faye's prediction of Atreus and Kratos adventure, it shows their names: Atreus is Loki and Kratos is Farbauti. Loki is Farbauti's son.
In true norse myth, they always love to eat and have meals. And I see some people very strong in real life even while being a little fat So I think for me, this is one of the most accurate looks of thor to actual mythology
@johanan J.J Not read anything else about him, but when I was reading the Tvtropes page it said that farbauti.. didn’t really do much outside of being Loki’s father. No, I don’t think the story would have had him come from Sparta after killing all the Greek gods, but they’re taking creative liberties anyway.
There was a sort of grim moral ambiguity of Baldur in God of War. You know him to be bad, but you also know his circumstances and the world in general doesn't seem pleasant, not with Odin around. At the end of the day, he was more or less the bad guy, but they made you think. I would be severely disappointed if Thor didn't at least get that after hyping him and Odin up so much.

How will Boy grow up into a sensible warrior if his dad doesn’t wear sensible armor!
Now, that Thor is a good design. I can really imagine Thor bathing on his glory, by idk- food, women and other things, rather than having him as a muscular man with perfect body and face.
He wouldn't necessarily be perfect to our standards but he was the ideal warrior and man for the Norse people, hence being a God of strength and fertility. It's not at all likely that Norse people valued obesity.
I'm honestly for the gutful Thor I feel like it fits how certain behemoth Icelandic men were portrayed. Kratos stemming from the Greece mythos and having a chiseled body like how Greek statues portrayed physique let's them both keep their very different cultural roots and give them their own unique personality in design. Plus the memes that can come out of these two manly father figures duking it out would be pretty solid.
I wouldve been fine with a gutful thor, but not THAT gut. Check out eddie hall and compare and contrast the images. A strongman could be fat, sure, but you can tell there's muscle underneath it, its not just flab. Thor just looks obese, if it wasn't for the armor and beard, I don't think hed fit the image at all.
There's also the fact that keeping a decent layer of fat on can actually save your life in battle. Gladiators would sometimes intentionally have a bit of a gut so they could lose more blood without dying.
@@timon20061995 I mean, Thor was famous for his love of drink. Vikings and Norsemen in general were known for getting hammered and having tons of feasts.

This is such a great explanation on how to depict a physically strong character. While musculature looks aesthetically pleasing, it's not a direct representation of physical strength. Physical strength requires a lot of mass. And to get that mass, you need to put on a lot of weight. Weight classes in boxing is a good example of this.
You realize fighters look nothing like this right? And even powerlifters don't. They have muscle guts, often a (really obvious) side effect of roiding. This Thor is just fat
@@gabrielmoura419 look at Eddie Hall. He's burly but ripped. You can see his muscle gut is muscle, you can see the outline of his abs. He's also not a hairless smooth belly, because men generally have body hair... that isn't to speak of the rest of his body. Flat yet still flabby manboobs, like sagging fat, just sad. You can see the volume on powerlifters, it's totally different
I think it's Thor's way of insulting his enemies. Give them a big and open target and dare them to strike. He knows they won't so he doesn't care about it.
Like Strong Belwas from the Song of Ice and Fire! He lets his enemies cut him once on his big belly before he kills them so he can use the scars as a tally of his defeated enemies.
Regarding on making thor an antagonist, Kratos and his son atreus/Loki herald ragnarok which of course will end the reign of the aesir. As for being misguided Odin might have manipulated thor influencing him since birth. In the game he is also portrayed as bloodthirsty and merciless, since giants are depicted as helpers of humanity in the game, and thor kills them on sight.
U are right the only one who is evil is actually Odin. If u think about it, he controls every asgardian, every aeisir God that exists and so on. He in this game is portrayed as power hungry and obsessed with control. He wants to control the realms, time etc. So he is therefore obsessed with the prophecy of ragnarok in witch he dies at the hands of giants. Every single story about odin has been told as him trying to change his own fate, witch he can't do of course so he does everything to prevent the great war to happen, witch is already beggining.
“This depiction looks like he could beat the hell out of Kratos” >Beats the hell out of Kratos, kills him, then revives him so he can beat the hell out of him some more.
*Thor put on the wedding dress* "Freya the valkyrie?" *Thor took off the dress* "Thor the Valkryie?" *Thor pick up the hammer* " *GASP* THOR THE GOD OF THUNDER!"
Personally I think Thor will play more to the "enemy of the Jotun" rather than the "friend of man" part of his description to fit the role of antagonis, similar to the way Thor was in the 1st marvel movie. Bloodthirsty for giant's blood and completely ambivalent to the goings on of man. Keep in mind, this is a God of War game, humans haven't mattered since Kratos became deified and transcended his humanity, hell, in the last game you don't even meet any regular people that aren't spirits besides a group of nameless bandits that are immediately turned into draugr after getting dumpstered. What Kratos does have is a son who is half giant, and the last of that bloodline. My money is on Thor's wanting to tie that loose end putting him at odds with our favorite greek chain slinger.
He may still be friend of man, kratos brings destruction everywhere he goes, he kills the gods and it's made decently clear that odin knows of kratos and his old pantheon, after killing all those gods it left greece to suffer, so thor would want to stop kratos, antagonist doesn't always meen evil just against the main character or protagonist, to me atleast personally i feel like he fits the role as the antagonist perfectly
@@psychdoesdegames8582 Mimir tells us very clearly that the Jötunn were very peaceful and mostly wise people while the Aesir just had fun slaughtering them. Odin cursed the valkyiries to insanity which caused ghosts/Helwalkers to appear just because he was pissed at Freya which backs Mimir's claims that the Aesir were assholes and tells us that he does not care for humans either. All of the evidence in the environments also supports this narrative that the Aesir are the baddies. Sure being the antagonist does not mean that they must be evil, but they are pretty damn evil in this story.
To further corroborate the size issue, the Irish god An Dagda-druid of the god, and god of druids- is also known for being rather hefty; especially after eating porridge enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool. Side note, also a thunder maker and working type.
A bit late to the party, I know, but your final question about how GOW may depict Thor's personality got me thinking ... I do believe the direction GOW will take is to make Thor a straight-up antagonist who plays against his primary roll of friend and defender of humanity, but I believe they'll do it in an unexpected way. Throughout the game we're inundated with story after story of how shockingly violent Thor seemingly is, but making him some mustache-twirling (or I guess in this case beard-twirling) villain or a snarling madman wouldn't be a satisfying or even sensible subversion of his supposed loyal and friendly demeanor. I think what they're going to do is make him surprisingly cordial and eloquent. He'll speak calmly and clearly and present himself as unexpectedly professional (The "calm and reasonable person" line in the sequel trailer leads me to believe this). At the same time I think he'll be shown as someone who's shockingly good at putting on an act of being affable and quite charismatic. Basically, he'll be a true clinically defined psychopath; someone who's amazing at pretending like he could be the friend and defender of humanity, but in reality he's cold and empty and perfectly capable of mass slaughter with no remorse. In my opinion, a sophisticated elitist psychopath pretending to be friendly to the "lesser folk" would be the perfect opposite of a warm down-to-earth working Joe who'd move the nine realms to protect the people.
He´ll likely be a selfish and arrogant idiot. Kinda how the MCU Thor who isn´t bright and it´s way too confident and oblivious, but with an evil turn. Like, they´ll do what they did with greek gods too, take the most questionable of stories about them and use them to depict him as he is, but on the bad light no one imagines. Someone that is so praised that started to be the one that praises him the most, believing himself to be deserving of everything and of having the right to put his will over anyone and kill whoever opposes since it´s a mortal sin to be against the "might protector"
Thor in mythology is surprisingly reasonable, but has a tendency towards violence. He’s known for his short fuse, but this is slightly redeemed by him not holding grudges. When he visited giants in the myths, they wanted him to prove his worth by drinking a horn of mead without stopping, lifting a cat and wrestling an old lady. He failed at all and they mocked him relentlessly which pissed him off and he left, afterwards one of the giants admitted that they had used illusions to mask the real nature of things. The horn of mead was actually a literal ocean and he greatly reduced the level, the cat was the world serpent, and the old lady was literally time (or age, I forget) itself, the giants feared him, which is why they wanted him to prove himself in the first place. Thor accepted this and went on his merry way. He’ll probably not be too clever, but clever enough to know his own limitations, and when it comes to combat he’ll probably be a lot more wise to Kratos’ nature than Balder.
GoW has always taken a pessimistic view of gods, playing up their flaws, so Thor is probably going to be a brutish bully who solves every problem with his hammer because why wouldn't you if you were the son of Odin? Who's going to tell you no when you have a hammer shaped nuke on your hip at all times and know you can kill basically anyone who tries?

Interestingly, Prof. Francesca Stavrakopoulou has a new book out, “God: An Anatomy” where she traces all the body parts and functions ascribed to Yahweh over the millennia to track down the polytheist origins of everyone’s favorite eternal unchanging and ineffable divinity. The concept of the Gods having physical form, especially human form, has always invited passionate debate, but that is a distraction typical of our species.
The concept of the divine, incarnated/manifested in form is also the evolutionary process of adaptation to the environment. Our beauty standards are rooted in fitness, which ironically can promote obesity to a certain degree as a positive trait in times of starvation for example. Unless we have a highly co-operative population which denotes selfish behaviour... This process is constantly evolving, quite literally and to abstract the Ideals from the divine is lot attempt to track evolution backwards and see which constants we can find.
yeah, it's kinda funny when you think about it, if you look at the state of thor in-game when it was being eaten, it had pecks and a six-pack on it, so either it was created to be a more physically pleasing depiction of him, or hear me out......after getting the hammer Thor let himself go because the hammer did all the work for him.
Well, Mimir did call him "a fat dober" when meeting Jormungandr the second time, so perhaps the insult was him also stating facts about not only Thor's backstabbing tendencies, but his obesity as well.

Having played the other games, they don't have a record of painting the gods in general in a favorable light. In the previous game, they basically portrayed Odin as a tyrannical egomaniac and the Jotun are victims of his lust for power and control. I think it fits with the themes they're going for though. I see the series as more of a commentary about religion in general, how we idealize these figures to justify our own morality. (Spoiler alert) At this point, Kratos wants nothing to do with the gods, good or bad. They did kill both of Thor's sons in the previous game though, so I imagine Thor could be portrayed as somewhat justified in retribution, but that still puts Kratos in a natural opposition to him.
I don't think GoW is a commentary on anything. I haven't played any of the games (oops) so I don't know if they're actually deep and shit, but I would imagine way back when the first one came out they just wanted to make a bad ass game where you could kick the shit out of the Greek gods. And if they make you beat the shit out of the gods they also want to give you a reason to do it with pleasure, so they portray them as deserving of the butt kicking.
God of war is using all of the events of the first three games more so in the last one to be trying to write a tale of abuse of power and lack responsibility by the gods both Greek and Norse. And what Kratos did in the first couple games was wrong and that he now feels bad about his mistreatment of both random mortals and the killing of most of the gods. (Spoiler alert) this is why he has problems connecting with his son who you find out is also a God (Loki) and the whole point of the last game was Kratos attempt at healing and bonding with his son which works but this is intertwined with The story of Ragnarok and how it starts. Kratos is forced to kill Balder at the end Fig/Fraya swears vengeance on him for killing her son and they go back home to wait the inevitable snow.

Dude, if you heard of some stories from greek poets there are a lot of times where the greek gods were petty as heck, I mean think of Hera punishing all the women Zeus cheated with, or medusa who got assaulted by Poseidon but got cursed by athena. I would argue that GOW was taking a pretty close interpretation of how the gods really are, they're petty and sometimes mean, they don't really care for the lives of mortals and punish people who don't submit to them. In someways those gods might be worse than the people they rule over.
As The Welsh Viking said at the time, this Thor looks like a real strong man who could drag 40 semis a mile, easy. It's honestly perfect. Tho i do agree on the armor issues. That was... a choice.
in actual Norse mythology Thor's hammer is so damn powerful that only Thor or someone as strong as Thor can pick it up there was never a magic curse it was just that powerful
Kratos and Loki are very much apocalypse bringing entities. Thor’s probably defending humanity in a way that throttles their emotions. Or maybe the Devs are doing The Whole “we’re still embarrassed of old kratos, we are gonna be more mature and just badmouth his rage without recognizing his tragedy”
Many Norse gods, Thor very much included (probably one of the worst), couldn't have given a single fuck about humanity. About as much as old Kratos. I doubt that's the deal. Ragnarok is the end of the Gods, not necessarily the world. Does he want to die? Nah.
I don't know why they would be embarrassed by old Kratos, maybe just by his depiction in God of war 3 but even then it's not as if there's no justification for his character and he's just angry shouty brute man.

Regardless of all of that, he won't hesitate to destroy a city or and all of humanity to pursue his own goals. Once he leaves the world of the Greek pantheon in ruins, he hates all the gods including himself.

He looks like he takes naps between push-ups

@@krystof5271 yep but he changed after killing the pantheon he belongs to. God of War is about how gods are just assholes with huge egos, they think they can do whatever they want just because they can. They killed frost giants not because they were evil but because they were legitimate threat to their power. In the original GOW the Greek pantheon manipulated him to do things he didn't like and even forced him to be a god instead of ending his misery.
@@caninecurry5823 I think you missed the fact attractive was not figurative. It was not in any form accurate to Baldur. You did some bad gymnastics to make that try and work.

My only argument is his armor, this is actually way closer to what I imagine Thor as than anything else I've ever seen.
Thor in Mrvel is a Lie. Just Fan service, which is lame.

This is such a great explanation on how to depict a physically strong character. While musculature looks aesthetically pleasing, it's not a direct representation of physical strength. Physical strength requires a lot of mass. And to get that mass, you need to put on a lot of weight. Weight classes in boxing is a good example of this.
This Thor is literally built like someone from those strongman competitions. He doesn't wanna look good with his muscles, he wants to be strong.
Facts
True. I mean look at Tyson fury. Man doesn't have abs but he carries around trees while jogging.

@@hardfandango and it was a challenge
This aged well xd
I love this dipiction of Thor. a true strongman would look something like this but Keltoi is right what truly matters is how the writers handle Thor.

The concept of the Gods having physical form, especially human form, has always invited passionate debate, but that is a distraction typical of our species.
The concept of the divine, incarnated/manifested in form is also the evolutionary process of adaptation to the environment. Unless we have a highly co-operative population which denotes selfish behaviour... Lmao. This is a good and funny hypothesis on why probably he wouldn’t be wearing chest armor on the coming game.
You and The Welsh Viking both covering this is exactly what I hoped for.
Edit: after finishing this video I suddenly have an urge to eat jerky, chop wood, and the like.
Couldn't agree more with the takes here. Just an interesting interpretation of a seldom described character, and thank you for taking note of how he's going to act in the story, instead of just his appearance. It's way more important, and I think for people that are familiar with Thor feel the same way, and this could become a story of righteousness based on perspective, ex: Tony Soprano, a villain that is rooted for because the story is told through him. Thanks for making the video, well done!
as someone that played gow ragnarök about an year after the controversy, this thor is perfect.
YES, this is how you have a reasonable and intelligent discussion about a topic and I agree the depiction is surprising but only from a subversion of expectations point of view.
I mentioned it in a comment but consider Kratos is a threat to the gods and Thor protects them as well.
calm down wise guy
This is hardly a subversion but whatever
The lack of Body hair is the only thing that bothers me about this Thor. It kinda looks weird. He has wild Hair and an unkempt Beard but his Chest looks perfectly waxed.
For all we know he waxes his chest with lightning lmao
I knew there was something off about this
I mean, yeah, what's the point of advancing graphics to the point where you can draw pores perfectly and but completely skip all body hair?
@@matheussanthiago9685 coz render is annoying in those i guess, considering each small hair has to move as well unlike a pore that’s just there.
@@ENXJ Yes fun fact! Thor in mythology was actually a bisexual it dosent show this in the movies that much because its not what the audience are there here to see. The literature even dosent show this although recent sources have proof that i just wasted 2 mins of your life...
(Spoiler alert)
this is why he has problems connecting with his son who you find out is also a God (Loki) and the whole point of the last game was Kratos attempt at healing and bonding with his son which works but this is intertwined with The story of Ragnarok and how it starts. Kratos is forced to kill Balder at the end Fig/Fraya swears vengeance on him for killing her son and they go back home to wait the inevitable snow.
They did my boy Hades wrong
@@Sevren_ everyone gets Hades wrong. In all of modern media, there is not a single okeyish version of him. He's always the villain, a douche or just straight Satan.
That was... a choice.
Not gonna lie. He looks way stronger than Marvels handsome Thor. And he should look strong dosnt he?
he just looks like a lineman thor
@@tamifluboy yeah... a stronger thor
@@beterbeter2584 not
in actual Norse mythology Thor's hammer is so damn powerful that only Thor or someone as strong as Thor can pick it up there was never a magic curse it was just that powerful
@@lesserfool it wasn't specifically Thor, even Thor had to use enchanted gauntlets to hold Mjolnir because of how heavy it is.
Nah.
Well what Kratos did was in many ways not justifiable, BUT it was understandable. I think that’s what makes him a good anti-hero in the originals.
Well to be fair Loki is the cause of and solution to all problems in Norse
I don't know why they would be embarrassed by old Kratos, maybe just by his depiction in God of war 3 but even then it's not as if there's no justification for his character and he's just angry shouty brute man.
Looks like someone who would compete in strongman, fitting.
He looks like some, but most great ones are leaner than that. The one with the most World's Strongest Man wins was completely ripped, although thst is unusual. Most have a good amount of body fat but not to the point of obesity.
@@Evil_Peter their bellies are usually smaller but the armor hiding the shoulders in this pic would hide the muscle of his shoulders, making him appear just fat rather than bulky fat.
I really like this depiction.
I'm not sure if my vision is completely accurate, but when I think of Thor the image that comes to my mind is a drunk murderous bastard... And this design fits perfectly.
When it comes to the armor, it fits the game perfectly, just look at kratos' default armor, he has no chest nor abdomen protection. There's also baldur who's just shirtless and magni who has really light armor.
At the end, I'm sure Santa Monica will take this story to a really interesting direction, which is all that matters.
:)
Thor has red hair and is massively strong. That’s better than literally every other modern depiction of him I’ve ever seen.
I don't mind a strong fat Thor like the mountain actor from GoT. This Thor is just well fat but whatever it is just a video game and people are over reacting. I believe Thor was a tall muscular (like Dwayne the rock) with wild long red hair and a well kept braided beard(common amongst Vikings) with blood red eyes.
@@Thunor93 Bruh this "fat" Thor can rip you in half , look at strongmen
@@СтивънЕмилов apparently you are stupid and can not read, first off that ain't no strong man Thor just a fat Thor, I just mentioned the most famous strongmen being the Actor from game of thrones who plays the mountain, I even stated I don't mind a strongman thor so your reply is worthless and makes you look daft.
@@Thunor93 you literally said that you believed that Thor looked like the rock when in reality this is probably the most accurate Thor you will see , let's put a one of those bodybuilders in a strongman competition , they will get destroyed lol
@@СтивънЕмилов I also stated that people are over reacting to fat Thor as it is just a game character and so what if santa monica took creative liberties with designing Thor, it's a game and not 100% based on mythology just influenced like any other god of war game. Get over yourself kid.
