  • Xenomorphs are dreadfully scary creatures that are based on H R Geiger’s painting Necronom IV. These epic aliens have become one of the most famous pop culture icons of science fiction horror films! After we made a video on Yautjas in which we cleared the air around the various secrets and mysteries about their anatomy, we received quite a few requests to make another such video on Xenomorphs, and Marvelous Videos doesn’t like to disappoint its loyal fans. So here we are with a video curated explicitly for the purpose of understanding the anatomy, culture, origin, gender, and reproductive cycle of the often slimy and always deadly extra-terrestrials called Xenomorphs.
    Credits - The right-hand side of the thumbnail with brain hugger is by Paul Jackson! He is truly a great artist, definitely check out his work - pauljacksonlives.com/
    The left-hand side of the thumbnail with female xenomorph hybrid is by super-talented Miri Sarbu, she has some absolutely great Zbrush stuff on her artstation.

      Can you release a sequel that can involve other universe cross-specie changes? A great example would be Dark Horse xenomorph with other comics like DC comics? Likewise, what could potentially create a truly best of best type of Xenomorph? My combination would be Queen Mother facehugger if a DC comic scientist arch villain, with the use of Lex Luthor. In a truly horror movie result. If he captured Superman using kryptomite and put a Queen Mother egg beside Superman. Imagine if a yellow star was near? Giving all the powers of Superman? The might seem to be the worst of all, but I can exceed that. Instead of needing Kryptonite or a Superman. Drop a Queen Mother egg, beside Doomsday while he was still contained and restrained. Doomsday has all the abilities Superman has, but doesn’t need a yellow star, and like Doomsday, has the unique ability to where anything that “kills” him, he evolves and develops a complete immunity to what killed him before. Anyone have any idea of something that could ever be worse?

    My dad has(had?) A theory that the "predators" hunted the "engineers", so the engineers made them an offer.
    They'd create the ultimate prey (Aliens/Xenomorphs), then seed worlds that the predators could use to hatch Aliens whenever they wanted.
    The engineers then took up a life of peace, like this video said, using the predators own rules of not fighting unarmed opponents.
    Which is why at the start of Prometheus, the one engineer is being made into a sacrifice.
    Obviously this is just a random theory my dad came up with, but I liked it personally.

    the xenomorph life cycle sure does waste alot of biomass...

    • @Silverfirefly1
      @Silverfirefly1 2 роки тому +55

      Speculating...within an established hive there may be a lot of reclamation of biomass, breaking down bodies and used eggs into other products or fertilizing middens. The books describe some fungus being cultivated that protects the hives from infections on their homeworld.
      As an invasive mechanism the expenditure could be taken as an investment, if the advantages are worth it. These various forms always seem to afford the aliens their adaptability, like they'll diverge at these points depending on the circumstances. If the prey population is numerous then waste becomes less of a disadvantage until the hive can establish and drones can reduce waste.
      Aliens always seem to live beyond their means, there's no backup plan to sustain their population once the prey is gone except to die back and wait. To me, it's this ferocity that screams 'weapon', this unwillingness to compromise with its prey or allow for balance that makes it a scary and fascinating concept.

    David didn't created the Xenomorphs, I think he just "replicated" it, the alien ship in the first movie had been on the planet long enough that the engineer on the cockpit sit was fossilized, it had been there probably for thousands of years. So unless he has a time machine, he didn't create them. I'm inclined to believe, the "black goo" is actually some type of Royal jelly the engineers extracted from the original natural Xenomorphs.

    • @katpocalypsemeow4554
      @katpocalypsemeow4554 2 роки тому +60

      I think something similar. The black goo was possibly an early version of the xenomorph bio-weapon. Or perhaps the xenomorph is an alternate version of the weapon meant to be used in different circumstances. There very well could've been records of both weapons aboard the ship and David was just reverse-engineering/recreating the more evolved version of the weapon from the incomplete records on the ship.

      Fossilization requires minerals to replace body material. It's the process of becoming stone, so either Engineers have weird biology, something in his suit was supposed to make him an unsuitable host, the Xenomorph made an egg from his biomass, or it was normal dessication.

      @Jacko Sargs Yes, in AVP Universe. Yautja would captured Queen Xenomorph, and used her eggs as 'hunting seeders' by using human host who respect them.
      Super Predators were also captured Queen Xenomorph, as seen on AVP Evolution Game. However, unlike traditional honorable yautja who killed adult alien, these bad blood super predators using them as slaves.

    • @ozymandiasnullifidian5590
      @ozymandiasnullifidian5590 2 роки тому +1

      @Jacko Sargs Well, they would have to evolve in a really harsh environment, because the development of such creatures would be dependent on immense evolutionary pressure, selective pressure... Predators can never be much stronger than the prey because if that would be the case all prey would be eaten and the predators would die. For example, the creature in the excellent sci-fi film "Life", that allegedly lived on Mars when there was life there... One of the characters said that such a creature (probably the species of that creature) would dominate the planet for hundreds of million years...That would be nonsensical, that creature was virtually indestructible and was growing with every feeding. Such a thing can't evolve by natural means but can be made, I guess in the future that would be possible.

      @Jacko Sargs Well, I was surprised and to some level disappointed after the "Prometheus" when in the next film we found that David was the creator of Xenomorphs. I thought like you that they are either from some planet with intense evolution, there is so much that can be done with that idea and crazy films to be spawned, or that they were created by the Engineers as a biological weapon. All that story with that black goo in those containers confused me...

      @Jacko Sargs I never had a chance to see the comics, but with enough imagination and people, biologists who would take care about the plausibility, it would be a very interesting, very hostile world, something like a much darker version of "Avatar". As you said, some creatures that could compete with xenomorphs, animals that serve as food and for growing new xenomorphs, plants...there are so many things that can be visually very interesting and with today's technology, it is doable.

    I think it's far more likely the engineers found the Aliens and used their DNA adaptation trait to create the Black Goo. That would account for the Space Jockey in the Derelict in Alien having clearly died from a facehugger far earlier than David's existence, long enough ago for it's body to fossilise.
    It's also shown in Aliens: River of Pain that the Derelict had more dead Engineers and a dead Queen on board, so those eggs were likely laid after the crew were killed and in preparation for someone to one day stumble across them.

      You should look into the idea that the liquid isn't a bioweapon. The whole idea that they were planning on killing us makes no sense. David used it as a bioweapon and the spaceship wasn't originally headed towards earth on the navigation until David chose earth.
      There is even a written scrip of dialogue when the alien speaks and the android translates it to the astronauts.
      I think it's film theory or someone who has a video on it. It shows how the movie was really a lot more open and not about what it appears to be. The creator kinda backed out of it in the second due to being afraid of basically changing what everyone thought and instead went with what everyone accepted it to be.

      Everything after the first Alien transformed the scary and unknown being, which was incomprehensible and lovecraftian in nature and whose intentions and physiology wasn´t ambiguous for the most parts, into a giant spacebug and took all the horror from this franchise. Not saying Aliens is no good movie, but it is just no good Alien sequel and every consequent entry became worse and worse. Nowadays Scott himself doesn´t understand what made Alien 1 brilliant as well as scary, which culminated in his atrocious decision to intecrate in humans into the origin of Alien which detroyed the unknown origin of their existence and ultimately took the core of Aliens horror.
      I like to watch Aliens - Prometheus now and then but the quintessential and canonical Alien movie will forever be Alien 1 to me. It´s original concepts were even better in which Ripley was supposed to die and the creature would imitate the voice of Dallas to send a stress signal into space.
      This video is proof, what destroyed the concept of Alien: After the first movie such a video wouldn´t have been possible. That is exactly what made Alien scary: An organism we don´t know anything about it. Fear of the unknown. As soon as we can analyse somthing, it takes the scaryness away.

She already had Newt and to me it seemed that she established a silent agreement between mothers that she wouldnt harm the eggs if she were allowed to leave with her. Then she goes bananas and shoots the eggs anyway, infuriating the queen and setting up the climax of the film. She already knew that the reactor was going to blow, something the queen had no way of knowing, she could have just left. I understand that its a movie and there had to be a big showdown, but her behavior seemed reckless and entirely out of character in that single moment. I have a few notes about your conclusive statements regarding the relationship between the Yautja, Engineers, and Xenomorphs. As well as a few gap fillers about Xenomorph creation:
    It is theorized that the Engineers are responsible for all life in the universe. Given that they had a hand in populated the Earth with life by ingesting the black mutagen (referred to as "Pathogen" in Aliens: Fireteam Elite), it can be hypothesized that they did this on many, if not all life sustaining planets as a sort of large scale science experiment or even just out of a god complex at having mastered biological engineering as a species. Hell, the Engineer buildings, ships and other structures aren't made of raw material, they're made out of genetically modified cells. They literally grow everything they need using their acute control over cell and DNA manipulation. That's why everything down to their own space suits appears organic in nature, despite being as hard or dense as steel. Back to my main point, if Engineers ingested this mutagen, it would break them down on a molecular level and restructure in various and often times random forms. This break down and restructuring of genetic material would result in any planet's first single and multicell organisms, leaving evolution to play out and create new and diverse life on any inhabitable world. Anything from fish, plants, and bacteria all spawned from a single Engineer's seemingly ritual suicide.
    If that is truly the case, then not only are they responsible for the eventual emergence of Humans, they also played a part in the creation of the Yautja and the Xenomorphs.
    Now, the Yautja, also known as the Hish-qu Ten, were a quadrupedal species on Yautja prime before becoming sentient. Another advanced race, known as the Amengi (origins unknown) had come across the planet and set up civilization upon said planet and, being close to what Humans would refer to as dickbag capitalists, took a liking to the ferocious nature of the beasts that the Yautja were and decided that pitting them against one another for sport would be both hilarous, and a source of income. You see the Amengi were a bug-like race of money grubbing assholes (who's design is actually based on the preliminary Predator look before we got the look we know today). Gambling on a planetary scale soon took place as Amengi would take, raise, and breed Yautja to be used in the fighting areas against one another. Like any form of entertainment, they felt the need to spice things up eventually. The vicious quadrupeds were then biologically engineered, as the Amengi sought favorable traits to increase the brutality of their sport. After generations of alterations, the large humanoid creatures we've known as Predators became the dominant combatant in the ring. The entire species was altered to become killing machines, capable of using gladiatorial esque weaponry on one another for the amusement of their insectoid masters. Until one day, one Yautja, known as Kaail, fought back against his oppressors and lead a revolution/slaughter against the alien species. Kaail then became known as the Alpha Predator. Before long, the Yautja had co-opted the Amengi technology and successfully drove them off of Yautja Prime. The fate of said race remains unknown (my money is on the Predators hunting them to extinction). Now with the genetic desire to hunt, and armed with advance technology, the budding species maintained their tribal like nature and sought out to fulfill their bloodlust, seeking trophies for status throughout the galaxy.
    The Engineers had run ins with the Predators on numerous occasions. The Engineers disliked the primitive nature of the species for they had attained sentience and space travel but not through evolution. The creatures were cunning, but not smart. Strong, but without tact. Seeking violence in such a boorish manner that the Engineers could not recognize them as higher life forms like themselves. Someone had bastardized their creation and now both species were in frequent confrontation.
    But the Xenomorphs? Their planet went through hell and as such the evolution triggered by the Engineers millennia ago produced such a violent and organized species that the entire planet, known as Xenomorph Prime or the Hiveworld, was laid waste and left barren by the large black bugs. Like any ecosystem besieged by a conventional invasive species, the planet grew quiet once all life upon it had been used as a host or was covered in hive material. The multitude of Xenomorph variation contained on the planet, rendered inert and in stasis, awaiting any new creatures that dared arrive. These creatures developed sentience, but not language. Intelligence, but no drive. Possessing a shared hive mind meant one thing and one thing only: The Queenmother made the rules. Each individual capable of adapting to new situations and thinking, but held at bay from advancing from anything more than a parasitic organism with an anthill societal structure. Fascinated by this world wide stagnation, the Engineers would dip down to the dark world and collect some samples to study, knowing that the species had imposed an evolutionary dead end upon itself, and looking to rectify similar issues with their future experiments. Seeing the variance in the organisms' structures they concluded that only the Queenmother and the other royal casts were pure in their DNA sequence. Each individual however contained trace amounts of various other lifeforms, now extinct. The hypothesized that this genome that allowed for single generation biological evolutionary changes was key to the stagnation of the species. Where the Engineers were the ultimate life givers due to their manufactured genetic mastery, the Xenomorphs represented the exact opposite end of the spectrum, a species that existed with the sole purpose of ending all other lives in both the physical sense as well as the evolutionary. Its unknown which came first, the Yautja or the Xenomorphs. But the engineers looked upon the Xenos as the antithesis of their hard work. And not in a bad way. They used Xenos as their "what not to look for" guide. And as such they incorporated their likeness into their architecture, a mosaic of the trials and tribulations of their scientific advancement. But the Engineers viewed the Yautja as a critical error, a life form who's only claim to sentience is due to the interference of another advanced races. Now, between the Engineers and the Yautja, mistakes were obviously made. The Xenos were brought out of their isolation for study or for sport. Soon the Yautja would grow their own Queens and seed planets, so that they may hunt and kill entire hives of the most dangerous game for societal standing.
    Much like carcinization, the belief that all Earth organisms will eventually evolve into crabs (no seriously, look into it), it appears that the black mutagen forces those exposed and all life derived from it will eventually end in Xenomorphs. Or at least similar insectoid creatures (possibly explaining the origins of the Amegni). So while Xenos predate mankind and Yautja by millions of years, the effect that the mutagen had on the several species present in Prometheus, caused evolution to skip uncharacteristically fast toward the end of the timeline, where-in the trilobite and the resultant deacon were the first signs of skipping the steps in the evolutionary chain. Even the worms in that movie grew to resemble proto-facehuggers. Skipping ahead to Covenant, David dropping the mutagen on the Engineer planet (not necessarily the homeworld though) lead to drastic changes in the planet's ecosystem. Beyond super mutating the Engineers below to a rapid and violent death, the mutagen also appears to have killed off any other native lifeforms on the planet, if there were any. Besides plant life, nothing could survive such a large mutagenic metamorphosis. Everything would die and decay, enriching the soil and thusly the plants, whos alterations would be slower given the rate of "ingestion". In the 10 years David lived on the planet, the plants grew black fungal sacs that could release a new form of the mutagen, once more mirroring the 2 stage life cycle of the Xenos. The Necromorph would spawn from infected humans similar as much larger and more visceral manifestations of the Xenomorphs. Some will claim however, that David went on to create the first facehuggers and ovamorphs using Elizabeth Shaw's biomaterial. While his actions resulted in said creations, he was using his heightened intellect to try and play god with the materials he had on hand. Using the human scraps from Shaw along with the black mutagen, he devised the most efficient way to make a new lifeform. Which coincidentally, resulted in a similar being to the original design we all know and love, the Protomorph. It all comes back to the mutagen. If the mutagen can take Engineers cells and eventually come up with Xenomorphs, then an AI like David, doing his own little experiment, using the mutagen in tandem with human cells (descendent from Engineers cells) was like taking a second shot before you felt the effects of the first one. The double dosage of evolutionarily kickstarter shot the speices David sought to create almost right to the end of the chain. So David didn't really INVENT the Xenomorphs, throwing decades of lore out the window, he merely came across a more rapid way to force the evolutionary progression instilled by the Engineers into overdrive, resulting in a creature CLOSE to xenomorphs.

    To those arguing how the Prometheus and Covenant films dont line up with the Originals and should not be counted... I take it how I take Star Wars. Different interpretations of the events of the originals. The originals in my mind being 1-3. Aliens Resurrection is way out there and i barely like to count it as part of it. the AvP series is on its own leg and honestly i like the way it worked out the history as it still left it a mystery where they came from. The Prometheus and Covenant is how Ridley Scrott sees the origin of the Xenomorph.
    Alien 1-3
    My personal belief is along the lines that the Engineers created the Xenomorph as a Biological Weapon Creature. It was used on themselves by a faction of their own kind and it ended up wiping themselves out. This led to the Derelict ship in Alien and the discovery by the humans thousands of earth years after the Engineers went extinct.
    AvP
    much like the Alien timeline, but the Predators, Yautja may have used the Xenomorph against the Engineers and wiped them out, and then used the Xeno as a creature to hunt. I like the Wayland corporation origin here as well, and it does introduce the Yutani for Wayland Yutani to become a thing.
    Prometheus and Covenant.
    I feel this is Ridley Scott trying to make an Orgin story thats easier for the General people to get behind, and fulfill the push for an Orgin to the Xeno. As a Stand alone disconnected series it does work for a possibly origin, along the lines of David Recreating the Bioweapon species and further manipulating it to more of what we see it as. The only way they could manage to connect it with the Original series is through Time Travel... or by showing that David did NOT create the species, only added to it and that his creation is seen in other places, while the Original is the one from Alien. And I can see it going on that the 2 separate versions: Original and Davids creations interact and either Fight or Join together. Either way its best to let Prometheus, Covenant and their possible Sequel be its on things as it does not include the Predators. I also dont like the Wayland creation in this one as it does not fit the original company at all.
    Personally I like to think that the AvP and original series mashup is a better lead up to the species and leaves the Xeno as a mystery. And with how some elements of the AvP added into it I feel it leads to the original Aliens directive that the Crew was expendable to get the Xeno for the company... They knew this species was out there and due to all known traces of it was wiped out and useless on earth so they needed a new specimen to work with.

    I really love these videos. And this is my favorite video breakdowns you have made by miles!
    My subjective hypothesis; David stumbled upon convergent evolution with the xenomorphs he created from the black goo. I'm guessing the black goo would have been taken from original xenomorphs then altered by engineers to try make a fast evolving xenomorph species free from the queen mother. Which seems to hold some merit as the neomorph seemed to look to david for guidance. But, with any species spliced by the black goo or alter xenomorph dna, climbs the xeno evolution it probably evolves to a point where it falls under the control of the queen mother. The engineers may have found this out after every research base was destroyed, abandoning their project to find a way control the xenomorph dna. Who knows, the engineers might had been so traumatised by their project failing so many times, they essentially became a race of monks by the time David found them.

    I really like the ending of this video. The simple but effective explanation that perhaps the Engineers harvested the black goo from xenomorphs would clean up the plot holes created by Prometheus and Alien Covenant. And it would explain the reason behind why the black goo causes things to mutate into Xenomorphs because the Xenomorph is the source of the black goo.
    It would be very easy for the Engineers to see that the Xenomorph is the Yautja's biggest enemy/threat and they would seek a way to use this in self defence or even conquest. But they might come to the conclusion that the Xenomorph is too dangerous to use and start killing them to harvest the black goo.
    Perhaps even, the black goo might be Royal Jelly as it seems to provoke a radical and accelerated physical change, a kind of violent change that kills other life forms, but to a Xenomorph would be comparatively tame. Or maybe both, maybe it's Royal Jelly that has been modified by the engineers.

    What if the Engineers got ahold of the royal jelly, and accidentally created their own doom via black liquid.
    Also, part of the physiology you missed: the aliens are physical representations of batteries. This is from the acid blood.
    The blood is another reason explaining why they don't emit heat and why they can hibernate for long periods and are safe from the vacume of space. Also, their diet is silicon

    The only thing I can take away from this video that wasn't utter contradictory shite is the notion that the Engineers used Royal Jelly from the homeworld of the Xenomorphs to develop their mutagenic bioweapon. That makes more sense and allows for David to develop a Xenomorph strain similar but separate from the original series of films while not completely butt-fucking the established canon built up over decades before Prometheus and Ridley decided to wank all over the original films.

    David improved on the Xenomorph in a movie we haven't seen yet. He places a part of himself into the experiments. That's why Xenomorphs become biomech in appearance, and perhaps gain some behavior or intelligent benefits from him, they are definitely more resilient and infections in their modern form within the story. Deacon , Protomorphs, and Covenant Xeno wouldn't stand a change against some of the weapons we see later. Too fleshy. But Covenant Xeno is just human enough to be eerily scary. I saw it as the eggs are the real natural aliens. The engineers took the aliens and turned them into weapons. Humans have done this with animals or using science to make mustard gas. So in the original Alien movie, those eggs were real aliens. In the crappy prequels those were engineer made aliens they took to make as aliens.

  • @JeremyKrullSS
    @JeremyKrullSS 2 роки тому +4

    This is a really well paced informative video. Couple of things though…
    The eggmorphing (from the Alien director’s cut) has nothing to do with the caste of alien being altered. It has to do with an idea originally in which human hosts were mutated into the ovomorph as opposed to be secured as hosts.
    Fifield also wasn’t facehugged. He was exposed to the accelerant liquid. Even after they turned that film into Prometheus instead of an actual Alien prequel, there’s still the unused sequence where it was meant to illustrate Fifield mutating into a being with familiar Xenomorph physiology and body proportions.
    Also when has an alien queen ever been up to 100 feet long? MAYBE the Queen mother (Queen of all queens) but still.
    The Prometheus and Covenant stuff just messes everything up and is more just a demonstration of how truly out of touch with the franchise Ridley Scott had become.
    Remember also that at one point the Xenomorph was shown to molt (regardless of the jelly) into the next caste depending on if it was the lone Xenomorph in the area or not (Specimen 6 for example).
    I hardly ever comment on anything on UA-cam but this is a great video and thought provoking.

    I read that in ALIEN RESURRECTIONS, one of the ideas that i guess didnt make it into the final movie, is that Aliens have a sort of hive genetic memory. This was how the Ripley Clone had some of the original Ripley's memories, and also how the Aliens keep getting smarter with every time they encounter humanity.

  • @ghramsey1681
    @ghramsey1681 2 роки тому +1

    An excellent run down of the alien species. Well done but I have one addendum;
    I've seen it mentioned here and elsewhere that the queen "can operate basic human technology" like lifts
    and the video here shows the scenes from the film Aliens where the queen uses the lift.
    Specifically regarding her "operating the lift' is inaccurate.
    In Aliens, the lifts must have an auto return to the top of their respective shafts upon not being recalled again.
    Ripley pushes a button and the door opens immediately on the one she uses to go to sub-level 3 and when she gets there and exits,
    the door closes and the lift appears to go back up. A somewhat ominous shot of the door closing and leaving her behind is shown
    which adds tension of Ripley being all alone at this point vs a hoard.
    In her escape w/ Newt in arms, Ripley presses the first button and in frustration also hits the button on the 2nd lift too.
    She gets into the first one that arrives, wards off the queen with the final burst of her flamer thrower, and gets away.
    As Ripley and Newt escape though the 2nd lift hits ground and doors open. The queen looks at the lift and off camera it enters.
    No portrayal of the queen actually touching the controls is made. So some sort of auto-return function is what brings the lift to the top
    not the queen actually operating anything.
    That she has the presence of mind to enter the lift though that shows intelligence.
    She knows the lift will take her where her quarry/prey just went.

The acid blood may be a evolutionary defence, but they can't just release it at will, in alien resurrection the caged zenomorphs attack another zenomorph to tear it apart so that its acid blood would destroy the floor. Also in prometheus the facehuggers didn't turn him into a zombie, it was the black goo that mutated/forced evolution.
