Top level football is an extensively choreographed game, I really love plays like this that show that despite the best efforts of coaches football is at its core an extremely chaotic game
Evidently, according to a couple of KU players, KU has practiced that punt every Thursday of every season since Lance Leipold got to KU. This is the first time they used it. It's designed to pin the ball inside the 1, but with the hope that it might bounce off a defender who isn't looking for the punt. It worked beautifully :)
Great play and makes sense. The CB is worried about covering the WR so he's not even noticing it's a punt so even if he looks back to see the ball, he probably knocks it down not realizing that would be a fumble and live ball. Brilliant.
The KU players say they've practiced that play every thursday of every week since Leipold showed up in Lawrence. This is the first time they actually ran the play. The main goal of the play is to pin the ball at the 1, but the secondary hope is that distracted defenders don't see the ball and something chaotic happens. It worked beautifully.
When I first started working at my current job, it was the first time I'd worked closely with a Mormon and his name was Jim. He was pretty cool, he was a baseball fan, liked to listen to classic rock during work, and was a good conversationalist, but he didn't drink anything containing alcohol or caffeine, so nearly every day about an hour after lunch he'd fall asleep in his chair...consistently. Hey Jim, if you read this, have a cup of coffee and wake the F up! :D
BYU wins out, they could climb to 5 (or higher, with a conference championship loss from a team above them). Now they will be lucky to stay at 14 and out of the playoffs. I have not seen a team wacked that hard after a single loss. There is more parity in CFB, but there are some teams that should not be considered worthy.
Number of different factors come into okay thus game. 1- The OC ruined this game with flag football play calls in the blue zone at the end of both halves of the game. 2- Coach Grimes (Kansas OC) coached at BYU twice and was BYU's OC before A Rod took over. He coached against A Rod and Kalani as well when they were at Utah and knows the defense inside and out. He came ready. 3- BYU can't figure out tye clock management deal in crucial times during the game. 4- Kansas is a much better team than their record puts them out to be.
"Coach Grimes (Kansas OC) coached at BYU twice and was BYU's OC before A Rod took over. He coached against A Rod and Kalani as well when they were at Utah and knows the defense inside and out. He came ready." He may have come ready, but that was KU's worst offensive output of the season, so it didn't really work. Grimes has improved greatly in recent weeks, but he called a bad game Saturday night. Neal was gashing BYU up the middle, but he kept trying to run to the outside, which wasn't working. It was pretty obvious the grass was a little slick and the guys were struggling to get traction running to the outside. He should have adjusted and kept running between the tackles and mixing it up with quick throws to the outside, all of which were working. But he kept trying to get cute. I agree though, KU is a much better team than their record puts them out to be. They broke in a new offense and their QB had some rust to knock off. Additionally, their defense was riddled with injuries all over the field the first half of the year. But now Jalon Daniels has knocked off the rust, the new offense is clicking and all the guys are on the same page, and the defense is healed up and healthy(as healthy as they've been all year anyway). This is the team KU was supposed to be, the team that was picked to challenge for the conference title. This KU team would be sitting at 9-1 right now. Right now I'd pick them on a neutral field against anybody in the conference except maybe Colorado. I don't know enough about Colorado. Can't decide how good they are, because they've played the easiest schedule in the Big XII.

You try doing that on a slippery field with a cold slippery ball and see how you do. The other guy only was able to fall on it better cause it lost momentum then.
Don't be decieved, this is a Kansas team that could easily be 7-2 if a few small things went their way. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they win out and get in a bowl game at 6-6. .

There are still a lot of lopsided plays in football when it comes to risk & reward that teams will eventually exploit as more and more analytics come to play. A player on the po unt return team touching the ball making it live is one of the biggest. Eventually, a coach will design a way for specialist punters to literally snipe members of the return team. Take the snap, wait for a gunner-blocker to turn their back and spiral kick at them. The yardage you'd trade in a failed snipe is worth what you'd gain in a successful snipe.
