Ovi is definitely skating better this year. At age 39, Ovechkin is a step quicker. How he does it, I don’t know. BTW, Ovi also made a great defensive play in this game to prevent a Vegas goal.
Most of today's top scorers would probably not be so successfull in the old era where physical strength was much more needed. But for Ovi I would say that he would have scored even more back then. Never was a big fan of him, rather neutral, but always appreciated his skill and his personality.

Ovie just got hurt in a knee-on-knee play with Jack McBain, which looks suspiciously like it was intentional. A down-the-lineup player clipping one of the greatest stars in the game - forcing him onto the disabled list week-to-week - we just can't have incidents like this happening as often as they do. They're not only dangerous to the player targeted, but risk their livelihood as well. Alex Ovechkin is built like a tank, but anyone can have their career ended by a knee injury. Worse yet, Ovechkin is involved in chasing one of the most-prestigious records in NHL history - the career goals mark held by Wayne Gretzky. It is just bad for he game for incidents like this to happen. If McBain's hit is cleared by Player Safety as being accidental, OK - but if it isn't - he ought to be suspended until Ovie gets back on the ice. I personally hope that after he retires, in addition to the Jersey in the rafters and the statue out front, I hope the Caps but a #8 at Ovie's office on the ice going forward :)
@@doubledouble4g379 I'll even go one better and say if Ovechkin wins the Rocket this year, the NHL should rename the trophy after he retires to something like the Rocket-Ovechkin trophy.
as a lifelong oilers fan who was in Northlands Coliseum that night Wayne won his first Stanley Cup i would love to see Ovie break the record. the man is a true beast and a legend in his own right
Wayne Gretzky has been a class act - wishing Ovie well in his quest to break his career goals mark, saying "Records are made to be broken..." Wayne needn't worry - that guy rewrote the record book to such an extent that there's always going to be something in there with his name on it! The next race will be to see if Connor McDavid can get to 2,000 career points and become the only one besides Gretzky to do it.... but that isn't for a few years yet. But that guy is stacking up points at an amazing pace.
I grew up in edmonton and witnessed gretzky do his magic... I'm happy ovi is gonna be the guy to break it... he's amazing.. watched 80 % of Ovi's games
3:06 to be fair to Pietrangelo: Ovi is notorious for using d-men as a screen on rush chances like that; and as Matt Roy (who's right-handed) is coming down on Samsonov's blocker side, he's in a prime position for a backdoor one-timer or tap in. IMHO Pietrangelo made the best decision he could by taking away the pass & forcing Ovi to shoot, giving Sammy good vision to see Ovi's shot coming. The problem is: It's Ovi. He may be notorious for the aforementioned d-man screen, but he's scored plenty of goals without it...
@@jonnmostovoy2406 Thanks! I watched the game live, and even though I'm a Caps fan who wants to see Ovi break the record, when I saw this play happen & Joe B & Locker (the Caps announcers) started (lightly) criticizing Pietrangelo, I was like, "but wait a minute...come on, now...what else was he supposed to do? Roy isn't as big of a scoring threat as Ovi is normally (obviously), but no defenseman is going to play the guy with the puck & leave the other guy wide open like that. Stopping the shooter is on the goalie in that situation..."
It did. I've watched his entire career (lifelong Caps fan since I was 5 wayyyy back in 1989) and he was extremely close with his dad. You could see it last year, he just wasn't in it like he was before. Now he seems to have moved past it and is probably using it to help fuel him this year. He wants that record I think partly for his dad. What better way to honor him then to chase down a record many thought would never be passed.
The past couple seasons it seemed like the only thing that mattered was Ovi’s record chase. It’s amazing to see this season having a really solid team all around and Ovi’s on a tear
Seeing this makes me wish I had been old enough to appreciate The Great One when he was around. Ovi is spectacular to watch, I couldn't imagine seing this magnified.
It's so crazy to me because while I do truly enjoy hockey, it's never been the sport that I follow thoroughly. Still, as a kid, Wayne Gretzky was the one and only athlete that I considered the GOAT, of ALL sports, even as a 10 year old who didn't watch hockey much. Seeing him just a few times completely determined that for me. Ovechkin is the only other player from any sport that I've always thought has reached that pinnacle. He is just almost TOO damn good, and this vid really proves it. Hockey players are the baddest motherf***ers of any sport, and the ones that last into their latter years are even more so, simply, juggernauts to me. Also, great breakdown brother. The cut of your jib is perfect for these vids, and I always appreciate seeing em. Keep it up, and God bless
I love hockey but you need to factor in the reality that most of the world isn't interested. So the pool of talent is small compared to sports like soccer and basketball. The GOAT of all sports definitely isn't Gretzky or Ovi😂
What's sad is Ovi missed his entire rookie season and another half season in his prime due to a lockout. Plus 2 COVID shortened seasons when he was on pace for 55 goals both years. If not for things out his control, we would be talking about Ovechkin going for 1000 goals, not just 895. He could still do it. With his shot and durability, scoring 20-30 goals in his mid 40s as a PP specialist with limited minutes is very realistic but he probably will want to retire before that Edit: not to mention, the Dale Hunter and Adam Oates era, they tried to force him to be a Right Winger and 4th line grinder instead of playing to his strengths. Those seasons probably cost him more goals than Covid did.
McMichael didn't score. He's living up to that 1st round pick status this season. I think with him (McMichael) and the secondary scoring, that's relieving a lot of pressure for Ovi to produce. Produce he has done a month and a half into the season.
The craziest part which you forgot to mention? Ovie is *already* the oldest man to ever win the Rocket Richard trophy, and yet he's back in the race at age 39.
Love your content, can you pin?

Fans this time last year: 'Ovie's so done, he's cooked, he'll never get the record.'
Those same fans during the playoffs: 'Look at him, he's so sluggish, he's not even trying, he should retire.'
Those same fans now: *crickets*
Ya love to see it.
Those people are not fans. They are clowns. Fans of hockey love Ovechkin. Nothing more to it.
@@gmaasry My GUESS is that they're: a) Old school Oilers fans who can't take it that their team has 0 Stanley Cups THIS century and that a 'robotic Russian' is getting close to one of 99s greatest milestones. b) Crosby/Pens fans. c) Fans of other Canadian teams who haven't had anything to cheer about in decades.
I personally hope that after he retires, in addition to the Jersey in the rafters and the statue out front, I hope the Caps but a #8 at Ovie's office on the ice going forward :)
@@doubledouble4g379 Absolutely they need to put a #8 on the left circle on the home side of the arena (or both). Excellent idea.
He went up to Salt Lake the next game and put 2 more goals up. Fun to watch. Sucks we lost but I am glad I saw him this season
Your comment is the only comment about actual hockey in the whole comment section. Good job! ❤
Горжусь что этот парень из моей страны !
The worst NHL team owner once said there will never be a Russian player play for his team. Yup, Harrold Ballard, the man who destroyed the Leafs
Ovi's Father died last summer, it probably affected his play that season.
What better way to honor him then to chase down a record many thought would never be passed.
wild stuff
Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin, this is a world treasure.✌The bald coach is very good at the moment.
💯👌
The past couple seasons it seemed like the only thing that mattered was Ovi’s record chase. It’s amazing to see this season having a really solid team all around and Ovi’s on a tear
Seeing this makes me wish I had been old enough to appreciate The Great One when he was around. Ovi is spectacular to watch, I couldn't imagine seing this magnified.
What a shame, he got injured a few hours ago, more info on that injury pending. But prior to that he packed another 2 goals)
"STOP THAT MAN" was the best part of the game. Still laughing
Biggest difference for him this season is he having a lot of fun again when he scores, he really wants that record and is gonna get it soon.
Playing on a good team helps with that too.
you have the most binge watchable channel lmao
And in tonight's game, he's scored 2 more through 30 minutes. Mindboggling.
Now 15 and praying he's not seriously hurt. Russian Machine Can't Break Now
find it funny both goalies in that game played their former team
What's sad is Ovi missed his entire rookie season and another half season in his prime due to a lockout. Plus 2 COVID shortened seasons when he was on pace for 55 goals both years.
If not for things out his control, we would be talking about Ovechkin going for 1000 goals, not just 895. He could still do it. With his shot and durability, scoring 20-30 goals in his mid 40s as a PP specialist with limited minutes is very realistic but he probably will want to retire before that
Edit: not to mention, the Dale Hunter and Adam Oates era, they tried to force him to be a Right Winger and 4th line grinder instead of playing to his strengths. Those seasons probably cost him more goals than Covid did.
well technically he did play a rookie season just a little alter than he was planning and still got the calder so
Unusual to see him with almost as many assists as goals this season.
McMichael didn't score.
He's living up to that 1st round pick status this season.
I think with him (McMichael) and the secondary scoring, that's relieving a lot of pressure for Ovi to produce.
Produce he has done a month and a half into the season.
Ovechkin has 2 more goals tonight for 15 goals on the season now. It's only halfway through the second period as well. Amazing.
As much as I love Vegas seeing ovechkin have a great season start make me want to cheer me for their team
History in the making the Great 8
Samsonov calling for the Shooter to be taken in the 2 on 1, crazy how much Ovi's shot is feared. D-men are taught to take the pass away in a 2 on 1.
Other guy is a defensive defenseman ... I get what you're saying but Samsonov must have also been sayin cmon !!
@@gmaasry Good point, I didn't even look at who the other guy was.
The craziest part which you forgot to mention? Ovie is *already* the oldest man to ever win the Rocket Richard trophy, and yet he's back in the race at age 39.
Ovi joins a handful of athletes who are performing so well at this age. Very very rare.
Ovechkin already has 2 goals vs Utah in the 2nd period. We may need another video for tomorrow.
Nice "Selke".
In one word, Gr8ness
10 years ago i had a feeling if anyone could break the record it would be ovi
He wants to retire so bad he just said F-it, let's go 🔥🔥
And he just scored his 2nd of the night (so far) in Utah. Still has the better part of 2 periods left in the game. Geez.
“I need Selke”
that’s too funny 😂
Love it!
3:00 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 that was some fire commentary
His teammates give a shit. That helps! He's the best goal scorer ever for sure. Just the forward version of the dominator.
Ovechkin is otherworldly in his skill and toughness. He’s coming off a broken fucking leg and getting right back to business.
Big smile on my face 😃
It would be greate to update the record ! It will be cool for hockey
Awesome! 😃
Even when he beats it he still will be 1300 points behind the great one.
History in the making :)
And 10 hrs after uploading the MF SCORES 2 TONIGHT
I'm the same age as ovi, thanks for reminding me how old i am lol
It's such a shame so many good players across all the teams are either nearing their 40s or are in their 40s.
One thing I wish was covered in this video: How old is Ovechkin? ;p
