This reminds me a lot about novice divers carrying a lot of gear they won’t need, only making themselves more snag prone.
I’m guilty of doing too that when I started diving but as I got more experienced and knowledgeable about what gear is useful, my set up naturally got streamlined and efficient.
The only equipment “overkill” that I can’t let go is carrying three diving knives / tools in different parts of my body.
Absolutely, and seemingly the case for most of us who really dedicate ourselves to a "hobby" or "craft". The more you exercise yourself in those disciplines, the more & more efficiency you gain. It's funny how we all naturally want EVERYthing when we first get in, but whittle it down to the "essentials" when we're seasoned.

Ignored the Magpul type 2 rail covers for a long time but finally tried them. Cost effective, ability to mix and match colors, and doesn’t require any wrench to install/remove
Optic/BUIS, sling, short vertical grip (because I like them and find them efficient), rail covers.
Bipod (QD transferable) on my scoped AR, flashlight 🔦 on my designated home defense AR.

I like the hand grip that splits into a bipod. I like the rail sections more than rail covers because better grip with gloves when snowy or wet. I use sling loops made of dyneema for my carry strap.
When I built my AR, I thought about how it would most likely be used. Determined between 50-75 yards at most and from a set position. I also can't use a red dot because of my eyes. I went with a laser, a flashlight and a bi pod. Dual purposed the bi pod as a bi pod / vertical grip if i have to move. All in the attempt to streamlined since its not the main firearm for my home defense a pistol is but it serves as last line bringing its awesomeness down on all who dares to make a bad decision. My point is that the AR platform is most likely the best, It gives you so many options to fit your needs. From my odd ball to a fully competition shooter

My handguard is an 18" toothpick lol but i only put 3 rail covers on where i grab it..filling every open mlok slot is overkill and unecessary
great content great topic: you mentioned lower capacity magazines ie 10-20 rounders. why is it that lower capacity magazines cost more than higher capacity magazines such as a 30 round magazine??
It’s called “economy of scale”.
Same reason 380acp cost more than 9mm even though the 380’s raw component cost is lower.
I see how folks get out of wack and out of weight with their weapons. One rule I like to follow and I've seen it noted in some of the comments. Optics first! Is it self defense, a varmint gun or for longer range hunting. Some weapons may need a scope or red dot and 45 degree sites. Three of my weapons have a flashlight. All of them are only on as long a rail as need be to make it secure. Whether straight or 45'ed same with the foregrip. BTW, you can lose a little weight if you don't need a full rail over the entire hand guard. Then there's no need for rail ladders... just sayin. Sling contacts are a must. If your handguard, brace or stock doesn't have them then add or get ones that do. That said I have never been able to snatch a quick release off my weapon, but I pay a lot of attention to were it is on my body and I rarely lose contact with both hand. "This is my rifle, there are many others like it. But none quite like this one!" Some of you may know what I mean. I will say I recently purchased a single point bungee style sling with the para clip you mentioned, and I like it! It keeps my 556 -10.5 inch tight to my chest. so when I pull up, I can go to full extension. ( making sure I'm not shouldering my pistol brace... ) Get site on target with the pistol scope or 45 degree sites. But a good adjustable sling is a must. Everything else is just eye candy. Let's just say when you look on the wall, you can defiantly tell my weapon, from my 21 year old sons weapon :o)

Not sure which part that might have been, but nope. The only shots we fire are at Manufacturers to drive improvement/innovation.... I mean, how long is QD going to be king? Isn't there a better way? At least Magpul took some initiative here with those Paraclip style attachments, but that can't be it for our AR15s...
over the years I've established a pretty basic system for accessories. Every gun has to have some sort of optics system before anything obviously, whether irons, an rds, whatever. Afterwards a sling right away, a flashlight if the guns not being used as a range toy, then you look at extra accessories. Figure out what you want the rifle to be configured for before you start equipping it. If you're using it for Night Fighting, a LAM is the first item to get, otherwise you should start with your ergonomics, and where you can you can save weight, as typically a more uncomfortable rifle to hold that's lighter than a heavy but comfortable rifle will still be a bit easier to shoot as it just isn't that heavy so you can really manipulate the rifles movement
Thanks for chiming in here with your experience. I really appreciate you calling out "range toys" and "duty" rifles. It's perfectly OKAY to have both...everyone should... but the choices for every part require a completely different mindset for each platform. (Also 100% on board with ergonomics first!)

Like those PSG1 style pistol grips for ARs. Comfy to hold? hell yes. Absolutely need to spend the money on one? No you can run the stock Magpul A2 and be fine.
Hell, I'm still running the basic mlok Midwest industries handguard that came on AR because it's fine as is. Getting one of the ALG handguards with the rounder profile would obviously boost ergonomics, but at the cost of weight and, well cost.

I always compare the cost to the benefits I get from the part, and its beyond important for me to be able to repair as many parts on my own and as easily as possible. Like I mentioned before, I prefer uncomfortable lightweight rifles, to heavy but ergonomic rifles just for the ability to manipulate the platform easier, so comfort is even less important to me than being able to say, easily swap barrels, or change a firing pin without needing more than at most, a single tool or 2 hex/Allen keys. Really overlooked feature since the AR and Bolt Actions seem to be the default rifles for most people.
Is there a vertical Ford grip that folds over so that the rifle can be laid on a platform to shoot if need be and then if you want to pick it back up and hold it with the forward grip in the vertical position once again

If it's that ladder style, picatinny rail cover you're talking about... that one is the Magpul FDE "Ladder Rail Panel" (MAG013-FDE).👍

C grips are purely just show they’re not better at all. Ppl do them to look like operators and it’s annoying

Weapon light schills. SMH. I hate having to tell people to take that dam weapon light and laser off so we can go hunting. Great for range, ccw, or indoor home defense but not legal to have where animals maybe present. Most states have shining and artificial light laws on firearms. Some states having light on weapon is automatic ticket, loss of hunting rights, and gun confiscation.
