  • Mike demonstrates how to turn a gavel and a sounding block. This is a traditional spindle project that can be turned without a scroll chuck. A turned gavel makes a wonderful commemorative gift for any organization’s outgoing president or a functional gift for any president, auctioneer, or judge wannabee

Lots of variations in design for a gavel. Just sketch out something on a piece of cardboard and cut it out and look at it. Make changes as needed.

That wood seemed to cut really sweetly, Mike; and I could have done with the idea of a tailstock mounted V block long ago.. Thanks. When I did a gavel and block I reckoned they needed a "respectable" fitted carrying case (never actually made),which needed to be compact. That meant a detachable screw in handle (3/4" 6tpi thread), which made rather more of the job. It was an enjoyable project. Bernard.

I thouht about threads but figured it would be a waste of time since it was not in the commision.

Thanks for the project! Your link to articles on gravels seems to be broken. Do you have another link?

Thanks, Jesse. The owner retired and shut down that website. I deleted it.
