Sonoma (and the new iOS) can now look at a picture of a finished dish, and call up recipes to make it! I tried that with a pic of my lunch yesterday (a stir-fry that I just kinda made up) and it came up with four beef and one chicken recipes that were very, very close to what I made. Amazing!
It's a rather mature OS at this point. There are many dozens of tweaks and changes that optimise and make life a little easier. What sort of major changes would you like?
@@leebeeskee Agree, it’s almost perfect. Maybe I could imagine some basic program changes. For example Mail. For many years I’ve been waiting for improvements in work with attachments. It’s almost impossible to work with a huge number of files. Especially if your colleague uses Outlook. In other programs like Spark and Outlook attachments are located in special areas, but here it is just in a body of mail. As a marketer, I can send and re-send 10 images of the new banner, and you can’t imagine what a mess the threat of my colleague's Outlook
@@alex_g087 Oh wow, I finally read a comment from someone who has the same problem as me! I always wondered how people can work with apple mail... well, most probably don't work with it at all and are justing using it for private stuff... but i work in a print media agency and sending lots of attachments all the time and that these are all displayed inside of the mail is just stupid, so you have to use Outlook. Apple should add an option to have them shown inline or as an attachment, in the "special area" how you called it. I'm wondering why these basic things aren't adressed, this should have been fixed years ago. Well, we waited 10 years to have multiple timers on iPhone...
@@alex_g087 You hit on a very good one here. One of my complaints as well in the apple OS ecosystem. My other one is ability to select any email and make a meeting/calendar event easily with the contents of the email in the Notes section of the appointment including attachments. If it can be done I haven't found out how easily at least. I don't want to have to drag and drop when working on a laptop without dual monitors. Just click the option and build the appointment with full details not a link back to the email that will not pass to outlook users.
Widgets aren't exactly new, but that's Apple marketing for you 😉We had them back in 2005 with OSX Tiger, access to small, single-purpose applications that could display information like weather forecasts, stock prices, and more with a simple keystroke or mouse click. It was a part of the Mac OS X operating system until macOS Catalina (version 10.15), when it was officially deprecated and replaced by the Notification Center widgets in 2019. Great video - thanks.
This video is the best I've watched on Sonoma . Tim speaks much more clearly and a little slower than some so this oldie can follow better. I must say I am upset though because the little emoji on my Home Screen has become much smaller and is no longer animated . Wish there was a way to restore it .

I found this extremely useful. Many thanks for taking the time to create the video, and share it with fellow Mac users.
I think you inherited all the Apple information coverage from Rene Ritchie, now that he has moved to Google. You are definitely the best UA-camr covering and how all their apps on the platforms work! Thank you for another informative video.
Thank you very much for calmly & easily explaining things. You are soothing to listen to, & I always learn something new. As avid Apple users, you have helped expand how we use our devices. 😊 Thank you
I ❤your english pronunciation, it makes, to a non natural english speaker, so easy to understand what you are saying 👍🙏. Uk? Anyway, congratulations my friend. New subscriber here. 👍 Thanks for your work 🙏
Thank you. I really appreciate this type of video, as I am not one to go through all the settings to see which does what in a new version, or even which ones are indeed new. This saved me a lot of time. Adding widgets was the one for which I paused the video and updated on the fly. The web app and profiles are interesting and I'll investigate those more soon.
Sonoma is great and all, but what I really want to see a video on is your DualUp monitor in the background! I'm interested to see someone's first-hand experience with it with macOS, I wanted to use one as a third monitor for my Windows setup, but want to see how macOS handles it as well with scaling and whatnot.
Im so happy and excited for the new os update sonoma is such a huge upgrade i luv all the effects and add ons such a beautiful software update i luv widgets so helpful
One small thing nobody is talking about -> open mail app and if you received some file (like *.pdf) and drag it to desktop -> it will have a small letter icon after the name, if you click this icon -> it will open the letter, from where you dragged it
nice channel im glad i subscribed when i did very clear, friendly & professional & informative keep up the good work, ive just subscribed to you newsletter as well
I have watched 8-10 videos about Sonoma introducing, but personally, I think this video is best for me. It is clear and useful, I learned a lot of tips from you , thank you,
Thank You for making this video. I was wondering what , if anything, about sonoma would be worth 'upgrading to'. I can now confidently stay with Monterey for a little while longer.
The thought that Apple developers spent even one nanosecond on having hearts and confetti appear in FaceTime, makes me want to scream. Doesn’t Timmy boy know there are serious user interface issues needing to be addressed? Steve is spinning in his grave.
everyone has been saying that widgets that appear on your phone will work on Mac even if there isn't a Mac app .... what about the fitness/activity app??? it would be soo helpful to see your rings on the Mac desktop
REALLY was hoping that the new Safari profiles would allow us to also configure separate privacy settings per profile but alas, no. Use case: banking sites that use separate billpay services (3rd party) via . Only way to get them to work is to allow cross-site scripting via the privacy settings in safari.
All I want Apple to do is fine tune the way apps run on multiple monitors. I don’t want to use spaces, just have all the apps tool bar, pops ups and save boxes follow the fuc$king app when I move it to another display. Now that would be amazing.
I didn’t check all the other comments, but the new Safari Profiles are something that Chrome has had for a least a year and maybe two years. As I have different Google accounts, I have used the Chrome Profiles since they started. Good to see Safari catching up. I have been trying to cut back on Chrome with all the new tracking that is supposedly not tracking that Google is adding.
Sonoma seems to be heavy and ram consuming to my usage as I have a M1 8GB. Maybe I'll try disabling the wallpaper video. A video showing how to make it lighter would be a good ideia. 😉
I'm looking for a SIRI upgrade. This is a really good video and frankly this looks like an update that will change the way I use my Mac. Wallpapers and widgets . .. do not make me excited by this update - it looks quite cosmetic - maybe I'll feel differently after upgrading ... but I so think the video conferencing option is really cool, I'm intrigued to see how this really works in real-life on Zoom. That said, I use Zoom on my work laptop and hardly at all on my Mac. So another 'use the computer differently' scenario.
CMD+Space is the best part of a Mac. Still not sure I like the widgets on the desktop. I wish I could keep them grayed out all the time. I open apps taking up the whole screen most of the time, so I never see them grayed out. Always in full color.
Never found spotlight search to be a particularly useful feature at all. When I type in a search it gives me options, when alls I want is a web search. Or maybe I'm just using it wrong. But I like all the other new features, and still enjoy the MacBook for my personal use case.
The fact apple gets away with tying basic app updates to os updates and report rs not even calling it out, just baffles me. Literally no one else does this. And it means key security features basically get delayed for sometimes a year while you wait for a full os update.
Why is the first feature that is mentioned (when talking about Sonoma) are the wallpapers. I understand that the new wallpapers are fun. And I know Apple has spent lots of effort to provide them. But how that doesn’t help me on a daily basis when I use my computer?
Thanks, very informative & concise review. None of these updates have any relevance to me (not your fault- your just the messenger 😊). But after 8 years of part-time mac use I still struggle with the files system, which is far less intuitive than Windows (which until I retired recently was my main OS).
Fantastic content! Re Notes to pages - Can you do the reverse I.e Pages to Notes? AND keep the formatting? (Can you also do it on iPadOS?) thanks again, fantastic channel!!
Is there a way to shuffle selected wallpapers/screensavers on Mac & mix with my photos? Love some of the screensavers, but not all, & I want to see my family & dogs also!
The web apps have been a feature for a long time in Chrome and one draw back it has is that we cannot have multiple tabs open in the web apps.. technically they are apps like in phone, you would have to go one after the other.. personally, I open youtube and open all the videos I would like to watch in new tabs and continue.. but can't do that on web apps..
Hi, thanks for the great content. Just curious if you use Safari as your default browser. I use Firefox just because that’s what I’m used to. Is there any advantage to switching? Thanks again.
Just upgraded my Mac Mini M2 to Sonoma last night. I remote into this headless mac. Comparing to Ventura there has been a real degradation in performance. Itäs significantly slower now. I remote from my iMac 27" 5k.
Great video! I just updated to Sonoma and, for some reason, when I open a Finder window or my browser, the window now opens at a smaller size... roughly 75% of my screen size. Is there a way to set a default size in Sonoma so my windows all open at the same size? I used to be able to drag the window to my preferred size and it would stay that way after I opened and closed it, but now it does not. I have the 13" Macbook Air so having the window at the largest possible size is important. Thank you.
Here is what I've noticed so far, as a normal user - when I click on a surface, all windows clear away! It is unintentional every time, and is already driving me insane.

Wallpapers and screensavers looks nice, but to be honest most of other new features are as usefull as single chopstick.
Agree. This could have been dot release.
Unless you have skipped previous updates (like my better half 🤣 )

Give your Mac a couple of days to optimize after the update, it will probably get faster.
