Here too (rural Bavaria). I was a volunteer for some years when I was younger. Moved away then to the big cities for better jobs and opportunities. Now I've been back for a while but didn't rejoin. They have a lot of new equipment I would have to learn how to handle, and physical fitness is another thing. Wish that more young people would volunteer, they are needed.

Exactly but i dont unterstand why they arent allowed to use blue light on their private car for the ride to the station. Or at least a yellow one. Either should be provided to them without paying them. Sometimes i have a honking car behind me with hazardlights on, but if you cant immediately see the Firefighter-Sticker in the windshield its pretty confusing. For some people just annoying because they dont know there's an emergency.

Firefighters in germany are divided into Berufsfeuerwehr (firefighting as their main paid job, usually only in Citys) and Freiwillige Feuerwehr (FFW, voluntairy organized firefighers, which do this while still working normal jobs, usually 5-6 small towns got one they handle together).
the video shows a FFW on a small town right next to the Autobahn and you see everyone arriving to the station by their own car
also: whenever there is a roadblock or similar on the autobahn, it is mandatory leave space between the leftmost and middle road for emergency vehicles. the minimum fine for noncompliance is 200€ and 2 points in the drivers register (9 points and you loose your drivers-licence)

In some parts of bavaria almost every small village has their own small FFW. Though they essentially work together. Each village essentially has different specialized equipment and when something big happens like a burning building, almost all in the vicinity show up. I've seen that once over 15 years ago in the night when a neigbors house / garage caught on fire. It started in the trashcan next to the garage, took over onto the car that was in between the garage and the house and even melted the door of the house.
Overall the firefighters are well organised and usually show up within minutes. Since the volunteers are spread across all the villages, you always have some people around. They usually have some basic equipment at home so they can even join directly. Time is key.

Right, that has nothing to do with forward thinking. By law, you have to form this emergency lane as soon as a traffic jam starts to appear.
It is even said, where to create that lane - in a 2 lane per direction, it is in the middle of the two. With 3 lanes per direction, the lane has to be made between the left and middle lane.
Unfortunatly, a lot of people still do not stick to that law, but dashcams in ambulances and fire cars can help to remind them (with a fine)

This "passage"on the autobahn is called "Rettungsgasse" (rescue lane). As soon as a traffic jam happens, all drivers HAVE TO open this space for emergency vehicles, even if you cant know if an accident actually happened, so we do this all the time just in case. Rule is, one line of cars to the far left, everyone else to the right. So if you have a street with three lanes, one line of cars go as far to the left as they can, the other two lines to the far right.

yes, ALL of them, gaps at normal entries/exits as well as gaps at emergency access roads, and gaps on the Autobahn as well as not using the access roads that are prohibited for all vehicles. such access roads might not be obvious enough to give penalties for not leaving a gap and on slow traffic it probably would be unreasonable to leave gaps of 100+ meters at normal entries/exits, but people easily can (and should) keep larger security distances so that they can react and create a gap when emergency vehicles need it.
And i would welcome harsher penalties for using these prohibited streets that are clearly marked and thus should be treated like not doing the emergency lane itself (instead of only 50€ for cars and 100€ for trucks, and no points at all)

Every driving student learns this behavior; In the event of an accident (and also in traffic jams, if an ambulance might be needed at some point): 1) switch on the hazard warning lights so that following drivers are warned early... 2) reduce speed and make room: the drivers on the fast lane (far left) have to moove to the left, those in the middle lane and right lane have to navigate to the right side of the autobahn (also on mormal streets you have to make room for ambulances, the police and of course firefighters - here you have to moove to the right side). .. 3) stay in the car and don't run around wildly on the road. Violations can result in very high fines and the driver's license can be confiscated for some time...

If you are in a traffic jam, you are required by law to form this "Rettungsgasse" - the lane for emergency vehicles. Funny thing: there are again and again people who ignore it, have forgotten how to respond or behave just plain stupid.
The guys really know what they're doing! Firemen stationed near motorways are trained for this sort of thing.
The driving education in Germany is certainly one of the more thorough ones in the world. You can only learn in dedicated driving schools, the British "L" sign where you are taught by parents does not exist here. There are theoretical sessions in the evenings and practical lessons. Not cheap! But afterwards you are trained properly. And it doesn't get easier: I just had to learn the normal rules. These days they even test you on environmentally friendly driving (low revs, high gears and a bit more) and other things that I did not learn. However, I am lucky do be allowed to drive small trucks (up to 7.5t), for which people all over Europe need an extra course, these days.

There are two reasons why all the drivers have made room for the fire briagde. a) There are some other fire engines already at the site of the accident, or b) because of the accident, there is a huge traffic jam. And when there is such a traffic jam, the cars cannot get out of the way when it is needed, so they already get into that position when they see a traffic jam developing. On top of that, the drivers might all have been following the radio news and know that there is an accient ahead of them, and, in anticipation of the arriving fire brigade and/or police, they make room for them.

In a setup like this it is quite common to finish dressing in the vehicle. They have their own (usually open) lockers with their stuff hung in such a way that they can step into the trousers and shoes, grab their jacket, shirt and helmet and get to the car asap. You're going to be driving for a couple minutes to the accident site in which you can finish putting everything on and away. The less time they spend dressing, the more time someone in the accident may have when time is running low.
For "professional" firefighters (as much as that distinction makes sense with the German system) you'd dress at the beginning of your shift and get dressed in the pants, boots and shirt, then leave your helmet and jacket in your seat in the truck. When the alarm goes it's just sprint to the truck and off you go.

Driving education is quite extensive (and expensive) in germany, you have to take practical driving lessons (~16x 45 min IIRC) in different surroundings (highway, town/country roads, at night) and have theoretical lessons on the rules, signs etc. You then have to pass a theoretical and a practical test. @KxNOxUTA Місяць тому

Usually it can be difficult to hear emergency vehicles on the Autobahn, but the second you notice you move aside. If you see others stop and move aside you follow suit. In this case, the reason why the street was this relatively neatly emptied, is likely due to ppl stopping due to the accident and fire and not being able to pass safely. The smoke can be seen far, thus it was fairly easy for ppl to follow suit and get out of the way while they were waiting for help.
During "regular" car accident, it may take a while before people realise what is going on. The first ppl will be more concerned with providing help and thus others will need time to grasp the situation. Ads this happens, the cars in the back have already started "piling up" and because there are no signs (like a smoke cloud) people will first of all assume there is a traffic jam and construction site. Once they har emergency vehicles though they will scurry to get out of the way. But not everyone is as fast at manoeuvring that situation as ambulances are fast to arrive, thus, the delays.
On Autobahn there is a spare lane noone is supposed to use or stop on, unless they have an accident. To avoid the problem. Big streets with several lanes that are not Autobahn, do not always have that but ppl tend to have enough space to move away. In small town streets, this manoeuvrer is incredibly taxing for everyone involved. ESPECIALLY when ppl are stuck at traffic lights. Because you are in the middle and can not move until your car neighbours move and that comes with a delay.

"but the second you notice you move aside." that would be exactly how not to do it ... you're supposed to already have moved aside and cleared the corridor BEFORE being able to hear or see an approaching emergency vehicle
" it may take a while before people realise what is going on." "will first of all assume there is a traffic jam and construction site. " still means that have to create an emergency corridor anway

There are a lot of volunteer fire departments in Germany, which means that the men and women have other jobs as their main occupation. They do firefighting on the side, and these men and women come to work from a party, shopping or work, for example. If they don't have much time, they sometimes have to change in the emergency vehicle. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL FIREFIGHTERS AND A BIG THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS 👍🫡

Yepp, they are wearing independent air supplies. Right in the beginning the driver requested that equipment. They knew from the call that it was a burning vehicle on the second lane of the A9, even at which kilometer of the Autobahn, but without occupants in the vehicle. They even talked about it during their sit-rep in the drive to the location what they would need to do. Especially as this lane is now definitely unusable for some time until repairs are made. So they have to divert traffic around the location. They were a bit miffed that it was on the second lane.
The request for independent air supply was necessary as you don't know what kind of vehicle is burning, and if the smoke from the conflagration is especially toxic.
The volunteer fire brigades train regularly at their station, usually several times a month. Their level of training is quite high.

It is not simply foresight, but the law and part of training at a normal german driving school. We call it Rettungsgasse (emergency lane). People get very angry at bad drivers bloccking that lane or refusing to move aside as it can cost lives. US drivers are some of the least competent for their superficial and basic driving training. The Autobahn can kill you when you‘re an unexperienced driver. Or you accidently kill someone else on the Autobahn.

The "Rettungsgasse" has to be opened for the firefighters and rescue vehicles, but it's not always the way like it's seen here in this video. Last time, I was in a traffic jam on the motorway, I pulled to the side , but maybe 15 or 20 cars needed to overtake me through that lane.

In case of a traffic jam or an accident on a highway (Autobahn) you are obliged to build a rescue lane. The ones i left lane have to divert to the left and the ones middle and right lane have to divert to the rights. Newer cars with drivers assistance are doing it o their own.

Those are real volunteers and they have a very good day. Usually those spaces are told when you do your driving license. But this video is ver unusual because the main time idiots block the the road or try to using it for themselfs just not to stand in the traffic jam. These poeple safe lifes and are well trained. Usually you start as a kid in the small towns and get trained. In Trainings you get the rules of fire, how to avoid danger for you and your guys. As far as you go you get trained in special operations as cutting a car to get the poeple out. It depends on the town you live in. The space they make is called „Rettungsgasse“ and you can search for how often it fails because humans make human things. It is a pitty.

If you hear the siren, you step aside and make room to the best of your ability. Left lane goes further left, center and right lanes go right. And then you wait until the emergency vehicle has passed. Thats one of the lynchpins they drill into your head in driving school.
I think you can be charged with "unterlassene Hilfeleistung" otherwise which sort of translates into "omission of assistance" (in helping those in need by blocking those that can actually help) but there is always the case that you could be the one in need of help and surely you wouldnt want to have some random jackass obstruct the way when the firefighters come to prevent your home from burning out or when the ambulance rushes you to the hospital or when the police is coming to find that burglar that just left your home.
But at this point I have seen several reactions to this video and everyone seemed in awe of this.
Is this a german thing? If so, how do drivers in other countries treat their emergency vehicles?

3:22 Not everyone does the right thing in this video. This is an illegal exit from the autobahn that should only be used by maintenance or emergency services. Sometimes the police let's drivers use it to leave the autobahn if there is an accident. But since there is no police to secure the scene of the accident, I doubt it.

@@melchiorvonsternberg844 yeah right ... only reason was that they went off the pavement and the Engine was running at the very edge. Absolutely no need for that kind of behaviour.
"only people who live there drive down there anyway, right?" definetly not. There are lots of people doing that idiot move, especially after one guy does it, others will follow, no matter if they're locals or not. Even saw foreign truckers making hairpin turns on the highway to get on a service access path in order to exit the highway and avoid the shut-down northbound lanes.
Would be nice if service access paths and on-ramps are kept clear and with a gap for EVs to cross over into the emergency corridor, but there's no traffic code mandating to do so, and some of them are kind of hidden or don't stand out for whatever reason. Can't really blame them for that

Its especially apalling if they hinder ambulances and that. In this case now its really not much to rescue anymore - the car is toast anyway. All they may achieve is to prevent damage to the road surface. And yes, this is the famous german Autobahn.

To be honest, I think we had a good head start and really a higher standard. Maybe our standard is still higher than the mean, but it's shrinking. You mustn't forget that we had a "hard reset" in terms of civilization because we started from scratch and built up a bombed-out country.
I think this guilt about the Second World War and the restart afterwards has given the majority of people humility and respect for life. In addition, our democracy has been more or less overhauled and is less susceptible to influence, so we have generally achieved a high standard of acceptance and cooperation between state and society. But as I said, this lead is shrinking the longer the Federal Republic exists.
At the latest since Corona, there has also been a social disintegration here and even the most stupid idiots are raising their voices and something like decency and behavior, consideration and respect is declining dramatically, especially towards the state, but also within society.
